			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The old adage that the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence can be extended to our technology cravings. Even the person holding the shiniest new gadget can&#8217;t help but eye a neighbor who has a different device and wonder, &#8220;What does that do that mine doesn&#8217;t?&#8221;</p>
<p>Thoughts like these are especially prevalent when it comes to the devoted owners of BlackBerrys and iPhones. All too often, the people carrying these smart phones are curious about what one device has that the other lacks. This week, I&#8217;m going to save you the trouble and outline some of the personal usage ups and downs to each device. </p>

<p>Because I regularly use both gadgets and am accustomed to their different features, I have included fresh observations from five people who recently switched from BlackBerrys to iPhones. At my request, these people kept track of their impressions, noting the things they missed on their BlackBerrys along with things they preferred on the iPhones. This column isn&#8217;t meant to promote one device over the other; rather, it is a summary of some people&#8217;s sentiments, combined with my own observations in hopes of enlightening readers. I inevitably left out some differences.</p>
<p>The most outstanding observation from my switch group in favor of the iPhone was an appreciation for its applications, or apps. </p>
<p>They used things like driving directions for the first time because these apps looked and worked better on the iPhone than on the BlackBerry. And they went through a downloading frenzy during which time they found all sorts of apps for the iPhone, such as games, entertainment and those that enhanced business-travel productivity. &#8220;Browsing for games. Probably should leave the office now,&#8221; said one person&#8217;s notes. </p>
<p>Though Research in Motion&#8217;s (RIMM) BlackBerrys also run apps (including some of the same ones as for the iPhone), BlackBerry&#8217;s App World offers only a little better than 2,000 apps. Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) App Store boasts more than 65,000. A shortcut to the App Store ships preloaded on iPhones. BlackBerry App World is preloaded or virtually preloaded by carriers at their discretion, so a shortcut to App World may not be visible.</p>
<p>My switchers were frustrated by the iPhone&#8217;s battery life and complained of running low on battery. One person said, &#8220;I need to charge my iPhone a couple of times throughout the day which can be inconvenient, especially when traveling. With my BlackBerry I just charged it while I slept and it was good to go for the day.&#8221;</p>
<p>Granted, these people were all using the iPhone 3GS and had previously used various models of BlackBerrys that ran on slower networks and had smaller screens—two features that require less battery. Still, worrying about running out of juice is a hassle. One person said his iPhone&#8217;s weak battery was a tribute to the fact that he used it more often and for more things than he did the BlackBerry.</p>
<p>The most obvious difference between iPhones and BlackBerrys are the keyboards. The iPhone uses an on-screen keyboard, while the BlackBerry (except the touch-screen Storm model) uses a tactile QWERTY keyboard. As expected, the switchers had trouble using the iPhone keyboard&#8211;especially for the first few days. But after about a week, most people in the group had adjusted well to the on-screen keys and the iPhone&#8217;s auto-correct feature that fixes mistakes as long as you keep typing rather than stopping to fix an error. One person said, &#8220;I was a skeptic, and didn&#8217;t think the typing would work for me at all, but it actually hasn&#8217;t been too bad.&#8221; </p>
<p>Another said typing can be a real challenge at first, but that this could be overcome with a bit of practice.</p>
<p>Several people said they were still able to use their thumbs for iPhone typing as they did on the BlackBerry, though most preferred turning the screen horizontally to do this with slightly larger keys. Some said that they weren&#8217;t typing quite as fast as with the BlackBerry&#8217;s QWERTY keys but that they weren&#8217;t too far off. </p>
<p>The BlackBerry keyboard&#8217;s static position below its screen means all letters, numbers and symbols must come solely from pressing those keys; this is done by pressing ALT or Shift keys for numbers and symbols. Some switchers noted that pressing a button to change the iPhone&#8217;s on-screen keyboard from letters to capital letters or numbers took a bit longer than on the BlackBerry. </p>
<p>My switchers were ecstatic about using the iPhone&#8217;s Safari Web browser. They enthusiastically said searching, browsing and reading were all made much better and more visually pleasing compared with their experiences on the BlackBerry browser. </p>
<p>If you are a BlackBerry user, you know that all received and sent emails are listed on the same screen. The iPhone behaves more like a computer, storing sent emails in a special folder you must back up to open. This takes a little while to get used to.</p>
<p>Some switchers said they wished the iPhone had something like BlackBerry Messenger, the always-on messaging system that works to allow communication between all BlackBerrys. </p>
<p>The iPhone automatically changes its time when you enter a new time zone. BlackBerrys remain set to their home time zone for time stamping all emails with that time&#8211;unless you change the time in settings. </p>
<p>RIM prides itself on being able to run multiple applications at once; the iPhone allows this with its own preloaded programs like Mail and Safari, but not with other apps. </p>
<p>One switcher, for example, was frustrated that Pandora, a radio-like app that plays music according to user likes and dislikes, turned off when he opened Mail to read emails while listening to songs. </p>
<p>The BlackBerry&#8217;s AC adaptor takes up two power outlet spots, while the small, square iPhone plug occupies only one outlet, making it more versatile and able to charge in more locations.</p>
<p>The iPhone only works on one cellular service: AT&#038;T (T). The BlackBerry is available from Verizon (VZ), AT&#038;T, T-Mobile, Sprint (S) and other carriers. My group used T-Mobile before changing to the iPhone&#8217;s AT&#038;T service. </p>
<p>There will always be something on someone else&#8217;s device that looks more appealing than the one in your hand. </p>
<p>But the experience of using apps on the iPhone&#8211;and the huge selection of apps in the App Store&#8211;significantly enhance Apple&#8217;s device. </p>
<p>RIM is continually improving its own store, but it needs to move quickly to keep its loyal users contented. </p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Many people are heading into this year&#8217;s holiday season with tighter budgets, prompting them to be even more selective with their gift buying. One way to make sure you&#8217;re getting the most for your dollar is to search the Web for product reviews. These reviews, usually consisting of ratings systems and comment sections, might give the finicky shopper a helpful glimpse into a real user&#8217;s experience with a product.</p>

<p>But reviews don&#8217;t always identify their authors&#8217; true motives. One item might be reviewed by a satisfied customer who bought the product, or it could be from someone who designed the product and wants to see it succeed. A review could even be from a manufacturer&#8217;s disgruntled employee who wants to see the product fail. Blogs can perpetuate such biased behavior by inviting people to submit reviews without verifying whether or not the members ever used the product.</p>
<p>This week, I tested <a href="http://Buzzillions.com" rel="external">Buzzillions.com</a>, a free Web site owned by San Francisco-based PowerReviews Inc. that mainly posts reviews from people who have verifiably purchased the product they are appraising, according to retailers&#8217; records. It also organizes reviews in specific categories, allowing users to search according to how they categorize themselves.</p>
<p>For example, someone shopping for sheets can label herself a budget, midrange or high-end shopper. A guy looking for a videogame console could call himself a gaming novice, casual gamer, frequent player or hard-core gamer. And someone on the hunt for the right shampoo could call herself a minimalist, beauty conscious or a product junkie. Selecting one of these profile labels whittles reviews down to only those best suited for the personality of the person buying the product &#8212; or perhaps receiving it as a gift.</p>
<p>The secret sauce behind Buzzillions is generated by surveys that over 300 retailers send to consumers. A few weeks after buying a product, consumers receive an email survey with a link to a Buzzillions questionnaire. These surveys ask consumers what they consider to be a product&#8217;s pros, cons and best uses, and its ranking according to the site&#8217;s best-out-of-five star rating system. And, following the Buzzillions formula, it asks these verified buyers to categorize themselves. Both verified users and unverified users, alike, can write reviews for the site, though verified users&#8217; reviews are more heavily considered in the &#8220;Buzzillions Rank&#8221; system.</p>
<p>The &#8220;Buzzillions Rank&#8221; shows a product&#8217;s standing in its particular category, based on an algorithm applied to the survey data. This formulated ranking is based on three things: a product&#8217;s star rating; the number of reviews it receives; and the reliability of its reviewers.</p>
<p>Though Buzzillions can&#8217;t prevent a person from posting multiple reviews on a product, it does search the site for duplicate content and users can notify the site if they doubt a review&#8217;s authenticity. This could trigger an investigation by the site that may involve tracking the Internet address of a reviewer, the times and frequency that a person posted reviews or even calling the person in question.</p>
<p>Buzzillions is particularly helpful when it comes to certain categories of reviews. The Electronics category, for example, is so populous that it must be divided into 17 subcategories with numerous smaller groups in each subcategory. This category can also be searched by brand.</p>
<p>But Buzzillions has its flaws. Not all products can be sorted with personality labels. And I found that some items were miscategorized. A &#8220;GPS&#8221; category included receivers, car navigation systems and wristwatches, but when I tried to narrow these products by selecting the &#8220;Automotive GPS&#8221; category, individual GPS data loggers and receivers still appeared instead of car-only devices like those from Garmin (GRMN) and TomTom. Buzzillions said it would correct this error, but products placed in the wrong categories could be highly confusing for someone unfamiliar with a product. Other categories, such as Shoes and Clothing, left me disappointed by the low number of represented brands and subcategories (i.e. shoes didn&#8217;t separate heels or flats from the pack).</p>
<p>Nothing is sold on Buzzillions.com itself, though the site does link to partner stores. But some product pages listed only one online store where the item could be bought. Buzzillions plans to fix this problem by listing about five to 10 online retailers per product.</p>
<p>People can use the site in two ways: as members, by signing up with an email and password and entering descriptions to create profiles of themselves and what types of products they like; or as unregistered visitors to the site. I tried both methods and found the member recommendations practical because they pointed out products I may not have found as quickly using searches. As a member, you instantly see a list of suggested products according to your profile as well as receive gift suggestions via email. And even using the site without becoming a member worked well, never making me feel like the best bits were only offered to registered members.</p>
<p>I really liked Buzzillions&#8217;&nbsp;&#8221;Review Snapshot,&#8221; a small at-a-glance box that lists pros, cons and best uses for a product. This snapshot also shows a product&#8217;s Buzzillions Rank, as well as its star ranking compared with the category&#8217;s star-ranking average. I saved a lot of time by skimming these concise snapshots rather than opening every review.</p>
<p>Buzzillions recently created a mobile version of its site, mobile.buzzillions.com, which runs on the iPhone&#8217;s Web browser and can be used for quick looks at reviews and top-10 lists. The company has plans to release an actual iPhone app that should be available soon via Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) App Store.</p>
<p>The more I used Buzzillions, the more I grew to depend on the site&#8217;s signature Buzzillions Rank, which is clearly listed on a big, bright-green badge. The top 10 products in each category are distinctly labeled, with the No. 1 item in a category getting a special ribbon. And this ranking held true to its formula and showed a product&#8217;s real standing: I often saw an item with a higher star-rating average receive a lower Buzzillions Rank because they had far fewer reviews compared with products with a higher Buzzillions Rank.</p>
<p>Another helpful stat that Buzzillions displays prominently with each review is the date that it was reviewed. I looked at a pair of tennis sneakers with a top-10 Buzzillions Rank, but some of that pair&#8217;s reviews were labeled with dates that were too old to be relevant for me. Electronics fans, of course, would care even more about these dates.</p>
<p>All told, Buzzillions does a good job of balancing reviews and culling the most-appropriate reviews for certain people based on personality traits. It currently has more than 3.6 million reviews, but will most likely continue to grow as more people use and rely on it, making it an even more valuable tool for shoppers.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Smartphones are masters of multitasking. They email, browse the Web, instant message, take pictures, run applications or play videos and music. So it&#8217;s easy to forget how uncomfortable they are to use as phones. Most are rectangular slabs that are awkward to hold against the ear, causing many smartphone users to also carry a basic cellphone just for calls.</p>
<p>At least one smartphone manufacturer is doing something about this. This week, Research In Motion (RIMM) introduced the BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8220, available for $150 with a two-year contract from T-Mobile (DT). This device is the first BlackBerry in a flip phone, or clamshell, form. Like RIM&#8217;s mainstream, candy-bar-shaped BlackBerry Pearl, the Flip uses a SureType keyboard, which has condensed keys and relies on predictive text software.</p>

<p>After using the Pearl Flip for a week, I&#8217;ve found it to be a stylish messaging device that works well as a comfortable phone. I really liked its exterior screen, which is designed to show previews of incoming messages, saving people the trouble of flipping open the device. It runs on T-Mobile&#8217;s slow EDGE network, but has built-in Wi-Fi and the ability to automatically connect to saved, nearby wireless networks.</p>
<p>First-time smartphone buyers will likely find the Pearl Flip to be a good fit. When it flips open, a special hinge drops the top half of the device slightly behind the bottom half, and a handy trackball makes navigation easy. The Flip&#8217;s Web browser enables streaming videos that look sharp on its interior screen, and a microSD card slot supports up to 16 gigabytes of memory.</p>
<p>But current BlackBerry owners who want to switch to a device with a more comfortable phone may have trouble adjusting to the Pearl Flip&#8217;s SureType keyboard &#8212; especially if they&#8217;re used to a device with a full QWERTY keyboard. Though the Pearl Flip&#8217;s keyboard is a generous size and its keys are flat and easy to press, its SureType design assigns two letters to almost every key, which can be frustrating to use when predictive text guesses a different word than that which is intended.</p>

<p>The Pearl Flip supports T-Mobile&#8217;s Unlimited HotSpot Calling, a service that doesn&#8217;t use any minutes on phone calls begun in Wi-Fi zones. Even if a user leaves the Wi-Fi zone in which he or she started a phone conversation, the call passes over to the T-Mobile cellular network without dropping out. This service costs $10 monthly in addition to regular service charges.</p>
<p>When I made calls on the Pearl Flip, friends on the other line noted how crisp and clear our connection sounded. And best of all, the Pearl Flip&#8217;s long, clamshell profile was easy to hold and fit snugly and comfortably between my ear and shoulder when I needed two hands to carry things.</p>
<p>BlackBerry&#8217;s signature red light blinks in this device&#8217;s top corner to indicate new messages. The 1.6-inch exterior screen displays about 25 words (give or take) from newly received emails, instant messages, SMS, MMS, calendar notifications and task reminders. If a message is received from a contact to whom a photo is assigned, that photo also shows up on the external screen to identify the sender. Side buttons let users scroll up or down through these previews.</p>
<p>This display is designed so that the same message being previewed externally will appear on the internal screen as soon as the Pearl Flip is opened. This makes sense because people will want to reply to some emails or read their entire contents after seeing a short preview. But my device didn&#8217;t do this at first; instead, the internal screen seemed completely unrelated to the external screen. I finally got this feature to work after my external screen froze and I rebooted the Pearl Flip. RIM said it hadn&#8217;t seen this behavior before, and wasn&#8217;t sure what had caused it.</p>
<p>The interior screen measures 2.4 inches diagonally and has a resolution of 240&#215;320 pixels, which is a larger, higher resolution screen than most basic cellphones. While using Wi-Fi, I pulled up YouTube.com and watched a video. It played without skipping or stopping while streaming directly from the Web. A higher-resolution video, which was saved to my device, automatically played in horizontal mode so as to take up the entire screen; YouTube videos play vertically, without using the full screen.</p>
<p>Up to 10 email accounts can be set up on the Pearl Flip; I had no problems using Hotmail, .Mac and Gmail accounts. I also signed into AOL Instant Messenger and Google Talk on the Pearl Flip. Along with these messaging programs, ICQ, Windows Live Messenger, Yahoo Messenger and BlackBerry Messenger also come pre-installed and ready to use.</p>
<p>If my Pearl Flip was closed and I remained signed into an instant-messaging client, notifications appeared on the external screen telling me who was sending an IM and what it said. When I opened the device, I was automatically directed to the screen where I could reply to the instant message.</p>
<p>I tested the T-Mobile Unlimited HotSpot Calling feature by starting calls using a Wi-Fi network and then leaving the network&#8217;s range. The calls remained steady without dropping or fading, and if I were a paying customer, I wouldn&#8217;t have been charged minutes for those calls. Calls that start out of Wi-Fi zones and end in Wi-Fi zones do deduct minutes. My Pearl Flip had no trouble automatically moving from the cellular network to a Wi-Fi network.</p>
<p>All T-Mobile Wi-Fi hotspots, such as at airports or in Starbucks (SBUX), automatically work with the Pearl Flip if you&#8217;re registered for the $10 monthly Unlimited Hotspot Calling.</p>
<p>If you&#8217;re considering taking the plunge into the always-connected world of smartphones, or if you want a more comfortable phone in your smartphone and don&#8217;t mind the quirks of SureType, the Pearl Flip 8220 may be the BlackBerry for you.</p>

If so, your mobile email device is never far and you&#8217;ve found yourself wondering how other people can leave unread emails sitting in their inboxes all day. On the other hand, those seemingly unplugged people are likely puzzled by BlackBerry addicts, wondering what could possibly be so urgent that they need to know about it the second it happens.</p>
<p>This week, I tested Peek, a device that might bridge the gap between these two camps. It&#8217;s made for those who don&#8217;t intend to become consumed with mobile email, and don&#8217;t need a combination phone, Internet, digital camera and email gadget. Yet from time to time, these people wish they had a better way to check emails without going home and turning on their computers.</p>

<p>Since I fit the constantly-checking-email description, I enlisted the help of someone who falls squarely into the category that Peek is targeting: my mother. Mom is constantly on the go, working on one project or another, and she doesn&#8217;t have time to consistently check her email. On more than one occasion, I&#8217;ve had to call her to talk about emails I sent that she didn&#8217;t yet read.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Stylish and Simple</h5>
<p>Peek is a stylishly thin device that, to a mobile email novice, could pass for a BlackBerry. It receives and sends email, period. Peek doesn&#8217;t have a Web browser, phone or built-in digital camera. It&#8217;s sold for $100 at Target and GetPeek.com, and costs $20 monthly for contract-free service. Most email accounts work with this gadget, including Hotmail, Yahoo, Gmail and AOL, and up to three accounts can be set to work on each device.</p>
<p>Peek Inc., a New York company that was started by former Virgin Mobile USA (VM) employees, mailed a Peek to my mom in Pennsylvania, and she has been using it for about a week with positive results.</p>
<p>I, too, tested a Peek, but I was more interested in my mom&#8217;s feedback since, prior to this test, she hadn&#8217;t used a mobile email device and I use two different ones &#8212; regularly. Overall, I&#8217;d suggest waiting until November to buy a Peek due to a handful of improvements that the company plans to add by then.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Winning Over a Novice</h5>
<p>My mom got the hang of Peek almost instantly and found it both helpful and relatively easy to use. She liked its full keyboard and the way most of its keys lit up and were familiarly placed like those on a computer keyboard &#8212; a feature I take for granted on my BlackBerry. Its price and stylish, thin look appealed to her, too. She tested an Aqua Blue Peek &#8212; though the device also comes in Black Cherry and Charcoal Gray. I knew Mom was catching on when she casually sent a message from her Peek late one night using the subject line, &#8220;What&#8217;s Up?&#8221;</p>
<p>My mom suggested a few improvements, and I agreed with all of them. The Peek can vibrate, chime and glow blue when new emails are received, but none of these indicators are particularly noticeable. For example, the chime sounds only once and neither my mom nor I could always hear it &#8212; even at its loudest setting &#8212; especially if it was in a purse. A blue indicator light on the Peek glows once every 10 seconds for 10 minutes after an email is received, but goes idle after that.</p>
<p>The font used on the Peek&#8217;s screen could stand to be a little bigger. My mom found words typed in all capital letters were easier and faster to read than the regular font, but she thought most people wouldn&#8217;t have too much trouble while using their glasses.</p>
<p>Peek Inc. says that by November, it will have added a louder chime, a constantly blinking indicator light and a larger font to the device. Also in November, people who purchase 12 months of service at once will get an extra month free.</p>
<p>Compared with my BlackBerry Curve, the Peek was thinner but I found its buttons and side scroll wheel a bit stiff. And Mom and I both found that the oft-used Space bar key was too tough to press down.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">One Inbox, Three Accounts</h5>
<p>The Peek&#8217;s straightforward system uses one inbox view (in which up to three email accounts are combined), one menu and a side scroll wheel for selecting commands. And though my mom didn&#8217;t seem to mind, the device&#8217;s overall navigation system came off as a bit clumsy to me. For example, rather than selecting an email to read it, I had to select an email, and then choose &#8220;Open Email&#8221; from a menu list. On most other devices, this can be done with one step.</p>
<p>But some BlackBerry tricks are built into the Peek, such as touching &#8220;T&#8221; to automatically go to the top of an email or inbox; &#8220;B&#8221; to go to the bottom; or &#8220;N&#8221; to move to the next email without navigating back to the inbox list. Likewise, the space bar serves as a built-in Page Down button. And holding a letter down will capitalize it.</p>
<p>Photo attachments can be easily opened on the Peek, though attached documents from programs like Word and Excel won&#8217;t open up.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Synching Contacts</h5>
<p>A simple step lets users synchronize their email account&#8217;s contact list with the Peek. My mom did this with an AOL account, and I did it with Hotmail, Gmail and .Mac accounts. Peek devices automatically check for email every two to five minutes, or if users can&#8217;t wait two minutes, they can initiate a Send/Receive manually and see an up-to-date queue of emails.</p>
<p>Peeks each have eight megabytes of usable memory, which can hold about 5,000 emails. Once a device reaches capacity, an on-screen prompt asks permission to delete the 500 oldest emails. Peek Inc. says a full battery charge will last about five days if a device handles around 10 to 15 emails a day; power users who send and receive 200 to 300 emails a day will get about two days of use from a full charge.</p>
<p>When asked, my mom concluded that she would probably buy a Peek, but said she still wasn&#8217;t sure that she had an urgent need to see email all that often. She also noted that Peek could become a Pandora&#8217;s box of sorts for people who, as they use it more often, might want to get more out of it &#8212; such as Google searches or other Web browsing.</p>
<p>Peek serves a purpose: It gives those who don&#8217;t belong to the &#8220;I-check-my-email-constantly&#8221; club a way to &#8220;peek&#8221; in on their emails and not feel so unplugged from friends and family. That alone, is reason enough to buy my mom one of these devices.</p>

<p>The single best feature in <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=aapl'>Apple</a>&#8217;s second-generation iPhone 3G isn&#8217;t the increased speed or the GPS location-finding feature. It is something called the &#8220;App Store,&#8221; a clever distribution mechanism for third-party programs that can run on the iPhone and on its close cousin, the iPod Touch. And you don&#8217;t even need a new iPhone to get the App Store. It is also part of a free software upgrade for older iPhones and a $10 upgrade for the Touch.</p>

<p>In just the first 10 days since the new iPhone and the App Store launched on July 11, more than 900 programs &#8212; applications, or &#8220;apps,&#8221; in tech jargon &#8212; have been introduced by numerous developers. Over 90% cost less than $10 or are free.</p>
<p>Even more noteworthy: iPhone and Touch users have downloaded 25 million copies of these programs, ranging from silly sound effects to challenging games; from news readers to restaurant locators; from social-networking programs to business applications.</p>
<p>We have been furiously downloading and trying out scores of these programs, using a new iPhone 3G, an original iPhone and an iPod Touch, and in general, we are very impressed. We found the process of choosing and downloading apps to be easy and quick, and most of the programs to be useful or entertaining. The vast majority are nicely designed, with great graphics and effective, simple user interfaces.</p>
<p>The easy availability of so many programs written by developers beyond Apple (AAPL) itself makes the iPhone a true computing platform, like a pocket-sized Windows or Macintosh PC. With so many programs already available, and many more in the pipeline, iPhone and Touch owners can have a device with fresh, different capabilities every day.</p>
<p>But the process isn&#8217;t perfect. For one thing, it is controlled by Apple, which can theoretically bar a program from distribution or take its time making one available.</p>
<p>There are also some glitches. If you download a lot of apps in a short period, it can slow the phone&#8217;s next synchronization with iTunes to a crawl, while iTunes tries to back up all the new programs, each of which can contain numerous hidden files. And there&#8217;s a bug in the new iPhone operating system that causes apps to crash, and can even force the iPhone or Touch to reboot, if you use a large number of the new apps in quick succession. Apple says it is working on fixing the latter problem.</p>
<p>Also, Apple&#8217;s claim of over 900 programs is somewhat misleading, because more than 100 of those are individual books you can read on the phone.</p>
<p>Apple&#8217;s baby isn&#8217;t the first smart phone that has attracted developers. Thousands of third-party programs already exist for Nokia (NOK) phones, BlackBerrys, and phones running the Palm (PALM) and Windows Mobile operating systems. But, compared with the graphically rich, snappy iPhone apps &#8212; many of which fetch data from the Internet at high speed &#8212; the typical program on these older platforms looks positively primitive.</p>

<p>The App Store can be accessed either from the device itself or from Apple&#8217;s iTunes software on a Windows or Mac computer, which then transfers the app to the iPhone or Touch. The programs cover a wide range.</p>
<p>Some fill in obvious holes in Apple&#8217;s original complement of iPhone software, things the iPhone has lacked that other phones have. These include AOL (TWX) Instant Messenger, a variety of task and to-do lists, sophisticated note takers and a voice dialer. There are numerous versions of popular board, card and word games, like solitaire, mahjong, Scrabble and Sudoku. There are also eye-popping iPhone versions of popular video games, some controlled by the phone&#8217;s motion detectors, which allow you to move cars and characters by just tilting the phone.</p>
<p>Numerous programs let you perform Internet functions without using the Web browser on the iPhone or iPod Touch. These include news readers, Internet radio players, sports-information apps, and programs that let you blog or use Google (GOOG) or Facebook or MySpace.</p>
<p>There are business programs from Oracle (ORCL), <a href="http://Salesforce.com" rel="external">Salesforce.com</a> and Bloomberg. And there&#8217;s a clutch of Bible programs.</p>
<p>Some are simply goofy, like a virtual Star Wars-like lightsaber, a rotary-phone dialer and a virtual &#8220;stapler.&#8221; And several programs turn the phone into a flashlight for emergencies.</p>
<p>There are way too many interesting apps to review here, but these are some we liked, in no particular order.</p>

<p><strong>AIM</strong>: free</p>
<p>This version of AOL&#8217;s popular instant-messaging program does a competent job with text chat, though it can&#8217;t yet do video or audio chats, or transfer files. Because Apple isn&#8217;t allowing third-party programs to run constantly in the background, you can&#8217;t receive new messages in AIM while doing other things. This will supposedly be fixed by new Apple technology due later this year.</p>
<p><strong>AOL Radio</strong>: free</p>
<p>While the iPhone and Touch contain full, terrific iPod capabilities, they don&#8217;t come with Internet radio players like this one. It can stream music and talk from a wide variety of online sources, including the Internet versions of broadcast radio stations.</p>
<p><strong>Evernote</strong>: free</p>
<p>This is an elegant note-taker that has been on computers for a while. You can jot down text notes, store photos or dictate audio memos. And it synchronizes with your Evernote account on Windows or Mac PCs or the Web.</p>
<p><strong>Instapaper</strong>: free</p>
<p>A handy way to store Web pages on your iPhone or Touch for reading when you&#8217;re offline. While on your computer, an Instapaper button added to the Web browser can snag Web pages for your personal Instapaper database. Then, when your iPhone or iPod Touch is online, it synchronizes with the Web-based Instapaper database. Later, when you&#8217;re offline, the pages are still there on the device, ready to read.</p>
<p><strong>Travelocity TravelTools</strong>: free</p>
<p>You can use this to check flight schedules, gate assignments and security waiting times. While you can&#8217;t book flights through this app, there&#8217;s a button that automatically calls Travelocity&#8217;s toll-free booking line.</p>
<p><strong>More Cowbell!</strong>: free</p>
<p>This is inspired by the Christopher Walken/Will Ferrell Saturday Night Live skit, which made the lowly cowbell a cult musical instrument. Whenever you tap the on-screen cowbell, it makes the recognizable, hollow sound heard in songs like &#8220;Down on the Corner,&#8221; by Creedence Clearwater Revival. <p>Touch Tarot is a digital tarot-card reading that takes place on your iPod Touch or iPhone, instead of at a table inside an incense-scented tent at the county fair. Phrasing above each card tells its general category, and below each card is a brief explanation of its meaning. For example, we turned over the Wheel of Fortune card in one card reading, and it said, &#8220;Advancement for good or ill. The unexpected may occur. Good fortune.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>iWant</strong>: free</p>
<p>The iWant app displays 12 black-and-white icons on your device&#8217;s screen, each representing a different category of something you might be looking for &#8212; including restaurants, bars, caf&eacute;s, hotels, drugstores, banks, car rentals and movies, among others. The device identifies your location, and each category can be tweaked to search by distance or highest rankings from Yelp, a user-written rating service.</p>
<p><strong>Urbanspoon</strong>: free</p>
<p>Urbanspoon resembles a slot machine: From left to right, columns show the location, cuisine and cost of nearby restaurants. Instead of pulling a lever to start the slot machine, you simply shake your iPhone or iPod Touch whenever you want to find a restaurant. When it stops, you see the name of a restaurant near you and its classification in each category. (You can also specify what location, cuisine or cost you&#8217;re looking for.)</p>
<p><strong>Air Hockey</strong>: $0.99</p>
<p>Air hockey works like the game you used to play in your best friend&#8217;s basement. You play against the computer, using a fingertip to push red or blue mallets that move a puck around the screen-turned-table and trying to sneak the puck past your computer opponent to score a goal.</p>
<p><strong>MotionX Poker</strong>: $4.99</p>

<p>This is an addictive poker game, played with realistic, beautifully rendered dice instead of cards. The cool thing is that you roll the dice by simply shaking the iPhone or iPod Touch; convincing sound effects accompany each roll of the dice.</p>
<p><strong>MLB.com At Bat</strong>: $4.99</p>
<p>There are lots of cellphone apps and services that can give you live updates on baseball games. What&#8217;s special about this one is that it adds video clips of key plays that you can view while the games are still in progress, using the full power of the gorgeous screen and video player on the iPhone and the Touch.</p>
<p><strong>Crash Bandicoot Nitro Kart 3D</strong>: $9.99</p>
<p>This is a rollicking, fun iPhone and iPod Touch rendition of the classic video racing game, where you control your car by tilting the phone. The graphics are good, and the game-play is responsive.</p>
<p><strong>Truphone</strong>: free</p>
<p>This is the first app for the iPhone that allows you to make cheap phone calls over the Internet instead of using the built-in cellphone capability, which can be much costlier, especially for international calls. In our tests, we had some trouble at first, but after we removed and re-installed the program, it worked fine. Calls to 40 countries are six cents a minute to landlines and 30 cents a minute to cellphones. The iPod Touch lacks a microphone, so this app works only on the iPhone.</p>
