			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Windows 7, Microsoft Corp.&#8217;s new operating system due out next week, is giving the company a lot to be happy about. By early reports, it&#8217;s fast, easy on the eyes and fixes most of the problems that plagued its predecessor, Vista. But while Microsoft (MSFT) employees are doing the dance of joy, some consumers are confused and scared about the prospect of upgrading their computers to Windows 7.</p>

<p>The upgrade from Windows XP to Windows 7 is particularly daunting because it requires first wiping the computer&#8217;s hard disk to perform what&#8217;s called a &#8220;custom&#8221; or &#8220;clean&#8221; install. This clears out the old operating system—as well as all of your programs, files and settings. To save personal files, XP users must back them up first, typically on an external hard disk, then transfer them back. Programs, however, will be lost altogether, so users must re-install these using their original CDs or installation files, and then also re-install all the program updates they&#8217;ve accumulated over the years.</p>
<p>People upgrading to Windows 7 from Vista may have it easier. In some common cases, they can upgrade to Windows 7 &#8220;in place,&#8221; which means they can save programs, files and settings right where they were. But since Vista was such a dud, many Windows users still use XP.</p>
<p>This week, I tested a program that tries to make the upgrade to Windows 7 just as easy for XP users as it is for some Vista users. I tested Laplink Software Inc.&#8217;s PCmover Windows 7 Upgrade Assistant (<a href="http://bit.ly/JeafI">http://bit.ly/JeafI</a>), a $15 program that saves programs, files and settings on the computer in a place that won&#8217;t be affected by the installation of Windows. This eliminates the hassle of using an external hard disk or re-installing programs. The company uses the analogy of a moving van to load up your computer&#8217;s information, storing it locally until it can be unloaded again on the same PC with a new operating system.</p>
<p>I tested this program using an Acer Aspire One netbook running Windows XP. It took me two hours from start to finish, a three-part process of installing the Upgrade Assistant, installing Windows 7, and then re-installing the PCmover program. I followed instructions and the process of upgrading was really quite easy, showing me the programs and files (photos, videos and documents) I had on my old operating system.</p>
<p>Afterward, I did have to dig around on my computer a little bit to make some adjustments, like fixing Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) iTunes music program so it opened in Windows 7. And I found it a little annoying that, throughout the process, the Upgrade Assistant tried to get me to buy more software programs, like RegistryBooster and DiskImage, by saying the programs would better prepare my old PC for the switch.</p>

<p>The Upgrade Assistant also works with PCs running Vista. Microsoft offers an in-place upgrade option from Vista to 7, but this mainly works for people transferring from an identical version of Vista to an identical version of 7, like Windows Vista 32-bit Home Premium to Windows 7 32-bit Home Premium.</p>
<p>This program won&#8217;t magically fix every upgrade issue you face. If you bought your computer many years ago, it may not be able to run Windows 7 at all, because the hardware may be insufficient. </p>
<p>Another problem is that most netbooks and some laptops don&#8217;t come with built-in disk drives, making it a challenge to install Windows 7, since it comes on a DVD. I had to call around town to find a Radio Shack selling an external DVD disk drive that plugged into my Acer netbook via a USB cord.</p>
<p>Some security software programs, like that from McAfee Inc. (MFE) and Symantec Corp.&#8217;s (SYMC) Norton Antivirus, may not transfer over to Windows 7, though you should be able to manually install them after the migration.</p>
<p>When first installing the Upgrade Assistant, you can choose to do a full migration (files, settings and programs); just move files and settings; move files only; or perform a custom migration. You also can specify which user accounts to include or exclude and you can opt to exclude certain types of files, like temporary files.</p>
<p>After the PCmover program assessed the contents of my PC, it explained that it was packing my content into a &#8220;moving van&#8221;—a file for holding the content—and offered to break the moving van&#8217;s content into smaller parts for people who have storage limitations while transferring.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s a little nerve-wracking to think about transferring your computer&#8217;s entire contents over without being able to see where the files are going. At least on an external hard disk, you feel like the files are stored on something tangible and accessible—even if some step in the migration goes terribly wrong and the laptop never starts again, however unlikely. </p>
<p>After installing Windows 7 and then re-installing the PCmover program, I was finished. The next time I turned on the PC, a program called StartUp immediately started to run. This appeared to show me a list of programs that automatically ran on my old operating system but which PCmover disabled from running automatically on Windows 7. A quick step allowed programs that I selected to automatically run again. </p>

<p>One thing to note as you upgrade from Windows XP is that your PC may not be equipped to deliver the full Windows 7 experience. Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor Beta, Microsoft&#8217;s own tool, analyzes what will and won&#8217;t work properly when the newest version of Windows installs. The Upgrade Advisor warned me that Windows Aero, the name used for some of the gorgeous visuals in Windows 7, wasn&#8217;t capable of working with my netbook&#8217;s graphics adapter. Sure enough, Aero&#8217;s ability to show tiny, pop-up previews of programs that are running in your taskbar as you hover over them didn&#8217;t work. Instead, the names of the files and programs appeared in text-only preview panes.</p>
<p>The downloadable version of the Upgrade Assistant is now $15 for one license to use on one PC—a special pre-release price before Windows 7 is available Oct. 22. After that, the downloadable version will cost $20 from Laplink.com for one license to use on one PC. If you would rather not download this program, it also will be available for purchase in retail stores by the end of October. Of course, you also will have to buy a copy of Windows 7; the version most consumers will want is called Home Premium and it costs $120 as an upgrade.</p>
<p>If you are considering Windows 7 and you are currently using Windows XP on a relatively new PC, a simpler and better-organized migration process is worth the nominal price of Laplink&#8217;s PCmover Windows 7 Upgrade Assistant.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>If your company makes printers but general trends are leaning toward using less paper and moving digital content to e-readers and smartphones, what can you do? Hewlett-Packard&#8217;s solution is to find new ways to get people to print more.</p>
<p>The $399 H-P Photosmart Premium All-in-One with Touch-Smart Web (<a href="http://hp.com/go/touchprinting">hp.com/go/touchprinting</a>) will print, copy, fax and scan like other all-in-ones. But it connects to the Internet using built-in Wi-Fi and displays customized Web applications on its 4.33-inch touch screen. These apps are designed to promote printing in any way possible, including photos from Snapfish, Sudoku puzzles, movie tickets from Fandango, coupons, maps from Google (GOOG) Maps, coloring-book pages and news articles—all without using a computer.</p>

<p>The print apps are part of the new H-P App Studio, H-P&#8217;s (HPQ) answer to the flurry of app stores—Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) App Store, RIM&#8217;s (RIMM) BlackBerry World, Android Marketplace, Palm&#8217;s (PALM) App Catalog and Microsoft&#8217;s (MSFT) Zune Marketplace—that ease the process of downloading onto mobile devices. A &#8220;Get More&#8221; icon on the printer&#8217;s touch screen presents descriptions of available apps. There are currently 15 available for download onto your printer, and more will be added in coming months.</p>

<p>This printer is designed to work with more than just the H-P App Studio. A downloadable tool called the H-P Photo Print Gadget installs on computers running Windows 7 or Vista (not Windows XP) so people can drag and drop photos to it for printing. PlayStation 3 owners can capture and print screen shots as evidence of their game success. And a long-available free app in Apple&#8217;s App Store called H-P iPrint Photo lets iPhone and iPod Touch owners send photos to this and other H-P printers.</p>
<p>The goal of this product is obviously to get people to print more, and in my case, it worked. I used more paper in a week of testing the Photosmart Premium All-in-One than I normally print out in three weeks at my office. The printer quickly churned out dual-sided pages with photos in rich colors.</p>
<p>But the concept of adding apps to a printer while also asking people to become more paper-reliant seems like one step forward, two steps back. I could see this concept working on a thin, stylish printer that could fit neatly on an entryway table, making it a cinch for people to grab maps, movie tickets and coupons on their way out the door. But this is a large, all-in-one machine that takes up some serious space.</p>
<p>And if this all-in-one is truly meant to work without a PC, it should do a better job of letting you interact with pages, like zooming in on a document to preview before printing. In the current document preview screen, the text is too small to read. Likewise, the Google Calendar app printed a nice one-page calendar month view, but I couldn&#8217;t zoom in on the print preview to see specific appointments. This forced me to print the page to see its contents, using more ink and more paper.</p>
<p>Other apps are shamelessly begging users to press Print. A Toys and Crafts app made by H-P itself includes paper dolls with cut-out clothes that can be snipped and folded to stay on the doll&#8217;s form. For the doll&#8217;s face, kids are encouraged to use a photo of themselves that–surprise, surprise—they can print using their all-in-one.</p>
<p><a href="HTTP://Coupons.com">Coupons.com</a> supplies two apps—one for coupons and one for recipes. I browsed through 87 product coupons in my ZIP Code and marked those that I wanted to print using a small check-box on the touch screen. Pressing &#8220;Print&#8221; compiled three coupons on one piece of paper. Recipes from Coupons.com printed with brightly colored photos of the end result; I&#8217;m looking forward to following one for Curried Chicken Salad.</p>
<p>For now, the Google Maps app isn&#8217;t ready for prime time: It prints only maps, not directions. H-P says it&#8217;s planning to add directions but wouldn&#8217;t say when. And a Nickelodeon app couldn&#8217;t load on my printer. Some apps took from 10 to 30 seconds to load—precious time when you&#8217;re running out the door.</p>
<p>One of the smartest apps, Tabbloid, lets people assemble a personalized tabloid-style print-out of news from a variety of sources like Daily Kos for politics and FanHouse for sports. But this assembling must be done on a computer, thus negating this printer&#8217;s no-PC approach. I chose from a list of 10 topics including automotive, celebrity, politics and sports and created a printable Tabbloid that, with one click, was sent wirelessly to the corresponding app on my printer. I printed it out to read during my commute. </p>
<p>I liked using the Photosmart Premium All-in-One&#8217;s generous screen for touch gestures like flicking left-to-right through a carousel of icons that represent apps. An on-screen keyboard appeared when I had to type in passwords for things like my Snapfish account.</p>
<p>H-P says it will introduce other products with TouchSmart Web capability and access to the HP App Studio, and one hopes these products will include low-end printers rather than expensive all-in-ones. The apps on the H-P Photosmart Premium All-in-One with TouchSmart Web are user-friendly, but I&#8217;m not convinced they&#8217;ll incite people to print more things more often.</p>

		<description><![CDATA[Postbox, a program that sorts through your email and detects its contents, is a good option for someone who wants a fast search option built into email, writes Katherine Boehret.]]></description>
			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>For many people, email is the main way they communicate with friends, co-workers and family members. It contains bills, class assignments, trip itineraries, photos and love notes. But as much as it gets used every day, the software that we utilize to read and sort our email isn&#8217;t as clever or time-saving as it could be.</p>
<p>This week I tested Postbox 1.0, a program designed to handle your email in a smart, helpful manner. Starting Wednesday, this program is available at <a href="http://www.postbox-inc.com/">www.Postbox-Inc.com</a>. Postbox sorts through your email and detects its contents so you can see Web links, photos, contacts and other items themselves with one button click—whether Microsoft Word (MSFT) documents, PDFs or spreadsheets—without digging through messages. Since its inbox is constantly being indexed, all search queries return near-instant results.</p>

<p>Postbox&#8217;s founders come from Mozilla Corp., maker of the popular Firefox browser, so Postbox is based on Mozilla technology and its security standards. Email is indexed locally on your computer, so none of it is sent back across the Web to Postbox. It uses Content Tabs (tabs are another feature borrowed from Firefox) to help visually organize folders, messages and content extracted from those messages. It displays the most important elements of each message in a right-side panel. Received emails can even be edited so they aren&#8217;t sitting in your inbox with subject lines like, &#8220;Fw: Re: Re: Sept.&#8221; Instead, you can rewrite the subject to something like &#8220;Flight times.&#8221;</p>
<p>But this program isn&#8217;t free like Gmail, Hotmail or other Web-based email programs, nor does it come preloaded on a computer the way Apple Mail (AAPL) is on every Mac. Users can try Postbox for a free 30-day trial period after which each license costs $40, allowing one person to use their license on multiple computers (i.e. at work, at home, on a laptop). For another $20, a Family Pack option will give up to five family members use of Postbox. An additional $25 buys a Lifetime Upgrades plan that entitles you to receive free of charge any major version of Postbox that&#8217;s released; other nonmajor releases are free upgrades.</p>
<p>I used Postbox on a Mac and a Windows Vista computer, filling it up with thousands of emails from Gmail, Hotmail and .Mac accounts. It didn&#8217;t run properly on my company-issued computer, which is plugged into a network firewall. Postbox says it supports open protocols like IMPAP, POP and SMTP, and that it would work with Microsoft Exchange if Exchange were set to use those open protocols.</p>
<p>For all of Postbox&#8217;s terrific features, it can be hard to suddenly see your email in a different way since most of our email programs haven&#8217;t changed much in years. Outlook, for example, has plenty of hidden features that many people never learn how to use. Postbox seems to know how slow users are to adapt to change and so it reveals many of its features whenever it gets the chance.</p>
<p>For example, Postbox pops up an alert that shows you how to connect this email program to Facebook and Twitter so that you can post status updates or tweets without leaving your email. These connections also let Postbox try to pull one representative photo for each of your email contacts by matching a name in an email with someone&#8217;s Facebook or Twitter name—if you follow the person. It also uses photos assigned to contacts in the Mac OS X address book, which is used by Apple Mail.</p>
<p>Or take a feature in Postbox called Topics. This is a way of auto-organizing messages into different groups after you label them as being part of a certain topic, say &#8220;Mom&#8217;s Birthday.&#8221; All messages in an email conversation are grouped into &#8220;Mom&#8217;s Birthday,&#8221; as are any future responses to the same conversation. Postbox gives you three ways to label an email conversation as being part of a certain topic: from the toolbar, using a Topics button in the message header or by pressing &#8220;T&#8221; from within a message. You can also select a topic as you&#8217;re composing an email, pre-sorting that conversation into a designated topic.</p>
<p>Not everyone will like Topics because, however helpful the feature is, it makes the user do more work when he or she just want to get through a huge pile of unread emails. Labeling each email with a certain topic doesn&#8217;t take long, but it&#8217;s still an extra step. I would like Postbox to create automatic topics for sorting emails. For example, I recently sent and received at least 50 emails related to rescheduling tennis matches. Even though all the messages had the word &#8220;tennis&#8221; in them, not all of them were related to the same email, so they wouldn&#8217;t sort into the topic I created, &#8220;Tennis Make-Up.&#8221; Postbox says it has considered automatic options like these and may try to incorporate something similar in future versions of the product.</p>
<p>If my 30-day trial ran out tomorrow, I&#8217;d miss Postbox&#8217;s Inspector Bar the most. This feature works like a filter, instantly sucking out the most important parts in each email—including messages, attachments, images or links—and displaying them in a blue, right-side panel.</p>
<p>Another useful tool in Postbox is the Compose Sidebar. This also appears as a right-side panel but it shows up when someone is writing an email. This panel can display attachments, images, links or contacts found in all emails so you can simply drag and drop that item into your email as you&#8217;re composing it. This took me a while to get comfortable using because I&#8217;m so used to hunting through emails for things that I need to find. But once it became a habit, I found myself using the Compose Sidebar often.</p>
<p>If you have Postbox running in the background and you get an email, small notifications appear in the bottom left of your screen telling you which email account received the message and who sent it.</p>
<p>In the Content Tabs, which fill up with all attachments, images, links or contacts found in your indexed email, a feature called the Action Bar lets you save, send, or instantly glance at a document. This saves you from opening each email and its attachment, a process that sometimes requires opening a slow-to-open program to see the document. A slider in this Action Bar lets you adjust the size of images from small to large.</p>
<p>Postbox shines a unique light on email and the way we work with it every day. Not all of its features will come naturally for long-time users of the same email program. But for someone who wants a fast search option built into email, Postbox is a winner.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Like many people today, I keep a lot of my important documents and communications in digital form. But I still print out the files and put them on my desk so I can have them in front of me instead of buried in computer subfolders within folders.</p>
<p>This week, I tested BumpTop, a program that displays items in a way that makes programs and files easy to see and open. It does this by turning your digital desktop into a three-dimensional environment that looks like your physical desktop. A few quick gestures neatly stack piles of items or tack important items onto one of four virtual walls. You can even flick your mouse to &#8220;toss&#8221; files to programs or group files into a pile, like stacking all your PDF files together. Special photo frames on the walls show slideshows of photos from PC folders or feeds from photo Web sites like Flickr or Picasa.</p>

<p>BumpTop comes from Toronto-based Bump Technologies Inc. and it has been in a private testing stage for a little over a year. Starting Wednesday, it&#8217;s available for anyone to download at <a href="http://bumptop.com" rel="external">BumpTop.com</a>. It comes in a free or $29 Pro version. In Pro, files you use most often will grow bigger over time and you can flip through a pile&#8217;s contents by rolling the mouse&#8217;s scroll wheel, among other things.</p>
<p>I used BumpTop Pro for over two weeks and tried it on four computers running three different Windows operating systems: XP, Vista, and the prerelease version of Windows 7. BumpTop says it hopes to develop a Mac version in the future. (It should work on Parallels, a program that runs Windows virtually on a Mac, according to Bump Technologies, but not on Fusion, a similar program.)</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Good-Looking Display</h5>
<p>This program is a real looker. When I showed it to friends, they immediately wanted to play with it, dragging pictures to pin on virtual walls and drawing circles around several icons at once to stack them into piles like magic. And when you toss files to certain programs, they perform functions. A Microsoft Word document tossed to the email icon generates an email with the document attached. Photos I tossed to the Facebook icon were posted on the social-networking site. Files can be tossed to a printer, the recycle bin, other piles and, in the Pro version, attached USB drives.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Program Switch</h5>
<p>But as much as I liked BumpTop, I kept coming back to the same conclusion: It was fun while I was using it, but I wasn&#8217;t naturally inclined to leave the program I was using &#8212; like my email program, my browser or TweetDeck &#8212; just to do something on the desktop in a more visually pleasing way. And since the computer&#8217;s desktop has never been as functional as popular programs, it&#8217;s hard to expect people to spend a lot of time there.</p>

<p>Also, while BumpTop introduces a new, attractive user interface to the desktop, its 3-D functionality doesn&#8217;t extend throughout the whole computer, so you find yourself jumping back and forth between different ways of doing things.</p>
<p>BumpTop requires a computer with 3-D graphics and drivers, which older machines won&#8217;t have. Just for kicks I installed BumpTop on my older XP machine, which didn&#8217;t have the necessary requirements, and sure enough, it ran slowly and didn&#8217;t represent programs like Microsoft Outlook (MSFT) and Mozilla&#8217;s Firefox with the correct icons. Specific system requirements for BumpTop, along with a list of what the Pro version has that the free version lacks, can be found at BumpTop.com/download.</p>
<p>BumpTop&#8217;s point of view is like looking down from the ceiling in a room with four walls. It installs with three picture frames on its walls, and these display content from three sources: your computer&#8217;s My Pictures folder, Flickr.com&#8217;s main photo feed and a Flickr feed of photos Bump Technologies chose. You can change the images in settings, or delete the frames altogether.</p>
<p>The picture frames show ever-changing slideshows, and to do this, they only load low-resolution thumbnails of the images they display. This looks good when you&#8217;re quickly glancing at BumpTop, but if you double-click on a frame to zoom in, you&#8217;ll see a blurry photo. Bump Technologies says it plans to improve this where possible. Any photos on BumpTop other than those displayed in frames are visible in high resolution when you zoom in.</p>
<p>BumpTop loads with icons representing Twitter, Facebook and Email pinned to its right wall. And you can add your printer to the wall and toss things to it, printing them immediately.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Wall Clingers</h5>
<p>The small visual details built into BumpTop make it a pleasure to use. Every time you open something, its representative icon hurls toward you in 3-D as if it were thrown. Items that are pinned to a wall flip end over end and playfully cling to the wall surface like a starfish with sticky, suction feet.</p>
<p>Special mouse movements generate on-screen options for organizing your BumpTop. Lassoing multiple images by drawing a line around them with your mouse pulls up a pie menu with options like &#8220;Grow,&#8221; &#8220;Shrink&#8221; and &#8220;Grid.&#8221; A &#8220;Pile by Type&#8221; option can organize all or just some of your desktop icons into piles arranged by similar characteristics, which by itself could be a big help.</p>
<p>Searching for something on your desktop isn&#8217;t a hassle anymore. Any time BumpTop is open, you can start typing and the program will search names of all items in BumpTop for results with the text you&#8217;re typing; those that match your request will glow.</p>
<p>I tried BumpTop on a touch-screen PC running Windows 7 &#8212; the HP TouchSmart PC &#8212; and the feeling of reaching out and tossing things around with my finger was even more enjoyable than using the mouse. As touch-screen PCs become more popular, BumpTop and programs like it will fit in more naturally.</p>
<p>If you miss seeing the photo that was on your regular desktop, an adjustment in Settings lets you use your Windows background on the BumpTop floor. Images can be assigned to each of the four walls; I assigned a photo of the National Mall at night to my back wall and a photo of my favorite lighthouse to my floor.</p>
<p>BumpTop is a pleasure to use and for no cost, the free version is certainly worth a try. If you like what you see and you&#8217;re willing to change the way you use your desktop, the Pro version might be worthwhile. Just be sure your computer has the correct specifications and be ready for blurry close-ups of the picture frames.</p>

Amid all this excitement, it&#8217;s worth taking time to consider how to transfer content from the old Windows PC to a shiny new Mac.</p>
<p>Apple (AAPL) has promoted this PC-to-Mac switching concept heavily over recent years &#8212; particularly with its &#8220;I&#8217;m a Mac&#8221; commercials, which bluntly compare the Windows and Mac operating systems. Windows Vista has been a source of consternation all its own, and some people have opted for the Mac rather than risking problems with a Vista PC. Apple recently reported that about 50% of the people buying Macs in the Apple stores are new to the Mac.</p>

<p>If you buy a new Mac from the Apple store, staffers there (&#8221;Geniuses,&#8221; as they call themselves) will transfer your files over to the new machine free. This process takes place in the store, though Apple says it generally isn&#8217;t a &#8220;while you wait&#8221; task. If you buy a Mac elsewhere, such as online or at Best Buy (BBY), Apple stores charge $50 for this transfer.</p>
<p>But some people aren&#8217;t comfortable with the idea of handing a computer filled with their personal files over to a stranger. If this is the case for you, some other viable options include copying your old PC&#8217;s data onto a portable hard drive or onto discs that are compatible with the new computer. If several home computers are networked, files can be transferred onto a drive accessible by all the machines.</p>
<p>This week, I tried yet another method, copying data from a Windows machine over to a new MacBook using a special transfer cable from <a href="http://www.belkin.com/">Belkin International Inc.</a> The aptly named Switch-to-Mac Cable plugs into USB ports on two computers. It came out a month ago and is available for $50 at places like Best Buy and Apple stores. Like other transferring methods, it moves only files and not programs or applications, such as Microsoft Word (MSFT). (Windows applications can run on a Mac using programs like Boot Camp, Fusion or Parallels.)</p>

<p>I tested the Belkin Switch-to-Mac Cable by transferring data to a new Apple MacBook from my two-year-old Lenovo ThinkPad X60, which runs Vista. (Most people will transfer from an older PC that doesn&#8217;t run Vista.)</p>
<p>After installing the software included and connecting the transfer cable to both the Mac and Windows PC, short, on-screen prompts walked me through the steps for copying data from one computer to the other. On one instructional screen, I checked boxes to indicate what I wanted to transfer, including documents, pictures, music, videos, Internet Explorer bookmarks, desktop wallpaper and desktop files. Here, I could also opt to transfer a custom folder as well as personal information from Outlook like email, contacts and calendar.</p>
<p>I liked Belkin&#8217;s simple approach, including unintimidating software and a straightforward cable with a glowing, white indicator. But the files didn&#8217;t all properly transfer from my Windows laptop to my Mac. Most notably, the software prompted me to move files on my desktop, but the cable moved only five of the 23 selected files stored there.</p>
<p>Also, I use Mozilla&#8217;s Firefox as my default browser, but Belkin doesn&#8217;t move Firefox bookmarks to the Mac. Still, my Internet Explorer bookmarks moved over into Safari, Apple&#8217;s browser. Belkin explained that it left out Firefox transfers, instead focusing on programs like Safari that come installed on Macs. Even without a cable, Firefox itself will export bookmarks to be moved to the Mac in just a few simple steps.</p>
<p>I had no problems transferring everything else, and things like photos and music moved to the Mac appeared there in logical places. For example, photos stored in the &#8220;My Pictures&#8221; folder on my Windows PC automatically moved over to iPhoto on the Mac and retained their original folder labels in iPhoto.</p>
<p>In most cases, newly transferred files were clearly labeled on the Mac in folders marked &#8220;Windows PC.&#8221; After my initial transfer, I used the cable for additional transfers, and the data moved in those follow-ups were labeled &#8220;Windows PC-2&#8243; and so on. When my email, contacts and calendar transferred from my Windows Live Mail desktop client, I wasn&#8217;t sure where this data had moved within Apple Mail because I didn&#8217;t see a &#8220;Windows PC&#8221; folder. A Belkin representative explained that files transferred to Apple Mail are stored in an &#8220;Import&#8221; folder.</p>
<p>If your transfer doesn&#8217;t work perfectly the first time, try moving stray files into a folder that transferred successfully in a previous attempt. I did this with some of my desktop files when they didn&#8217;t move over and it worked, albeit with an extra step.</p>
<p>Over the phone, I walked through numerous troubleshooting scenarios with Belkin to figure out why my desktop files didn&#8217;t transfer over to the new Mac, but nothing helped. Belkin said it hadn&#8217;t seen my desktop transfer problem in its tests.</p>
<p>I was frustrated to find that Belkin doesn&#8217;t offer much in the way of detailed instructions for users, such as a FAQs Web site or troubleshooting steps for common hiccups. Its simplicity is an asset, but when performing an important task like transferring data, I&#8217;d rather have the option of knowing more than less. Belkin says it plans to add more help for users in the future.</p>
<p>As its name indicates, the Belkin Switch-to-Mac Cable isn&#8217;t designed to transfer data from one Mac to another, nor from one Windows PC to another. Nor will it transfer data from a Mac to a Windows PC. Additionally, all hidden directories and system directories are ignored, as are all files with the following extensions: .exe, .com, .dll, .scr, .ini, .db, .lnk.</p>
<p>Not tested was a competing product from Detto Technologies, the $50 Move2Mac, which comes in two versions: One enables transfers from older PCs without USB ports, the other enables transfers from PCs with USB ports that are running Windows 98, Millennium, 2000 or XP &#8212; but not Vista, which the Belkin enables.</p>
<p>If you&#8217;re moving away from a Windows PC, Belkin&#8217;s Switch-to-Mac Cable is one tool that can make this transition easier.</p>

And with good reason: Many people will be staring at beautiful high-definition TV sets. (According to the Consumer Electronics Association, 47% of U.S. households had HDTVs as of July, a percentage that&#8217;s likely to increase as the date for analog-to-digital conversion approaches.) But if <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=ek'>Eastman Kodak</a> (EK) has its way, many people will be gathered round the TV this holiday season, gazing at family memories in full HD splendor.</p>

<p>This week I tested the Kodak Theatre HD Player, the photo-centric company&#8217;s attempt to snag valuable real estate in the living room. This small, black box pulls photos and videos from computers around the house and displays them on an HDTV. It also enables the sending and receiving of photos via Kodak Gallery, and connects to Web-based photos stored on Flickr, Facebook, Picasa, .Mac and others. Podcasts, Internet Radio and updates from news feeds, weather forecasts and stock quotes are also accessible using the HD Player. And it has a terrifically simple motion-sensing remote that works like using a mouse on a TV screen.</p>
<p>But the HD Player isn&#8217;t all smiles. Its $299 price doesn&#8217;t include any built-in storage for keeping content directly on the device. It currently has no way of accessing HD movies or television shows, nor will it work with Macs. In comparison, Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) $229 Apple TV has 40 gigabytes of storage, can access HD television shows and movies via the iTunes Store, and works with Macs and Windows PCs. This is important because as budgets tighten in the current economy, gadgets have to prove their value and versatility more than ever.</p>
<p>After using the Kodak Theatre HD Player with Windows XP and Vista machines over the past week, I can conclude that this device&#8217;s interface shines in its simplicity and is a lot of fun to use. Kodak teamed with Hillcrest Labs to make the player&#8217;s motion-sensitive remote and corresponding software, which includes satisfying extra features like images that automatically magnify when the remote control&#8217;s cursor points at them and icons that make chirping sounds when selected. The remote itself is shaped to rest comfortably in a hand and has three simple buttons and a scroll wheel.</p>
<p>Quick-access memory-card slots for six types of memory cards appear on the box&#8217;s front, and two USB ports can connect to digital cameras or USB storage devices.</p>
<p>Currently, the player&#8217;s software works directly with Flickr, RadioTime (8,750 radio stations) and FrameChannel, which grants access to various &#8220;channels&#8221; like Facebook, .Mac, Picasa, People.com news and National Geographic. Kodak says it will incorporate YouTube access in January; I got a sneak peek at the interface for this and it looks well-organized.</p>
<p>Yet the HD Player&#8217;s smart combination of software and remote left me wishing it did a bit more. Photo sharing is enabled only via Kodak Gallery, so you can&#8217;t use another Web-based account to share photos directly from your TV. Likewise, a blue light on the box slowly blinks only when new Picture Mail (a message containing shared photos) is received on a Kodak Gallery account, not when new photos are added on other sources such as Flickr Photostreams or Facebook pages.</p>
<p>The Home screen of the HD Player shows four categories: Pictures &#038; Videos, Kodak Gallery, Music and Entertainment. Subcategories are where you might guess they would be, for example podcasts are listed under Entertainment. And a tiny Home icon appears in the top right corner of every screen so you can always get Home with one click. The Pictures &#038; Videos category holds photos and videos from a currently selected Windows PC.</p>
<p>An unlimited number of Windows PCs can wirelessly pair with the player as long as they have special Kodak software installed on them. But only one PC&#8217;s content can be accessed at a time. I toggled between two paired computers without a problem, but would&#8217;ve preferred accessing music and photos from both sources simultaneously.</p>
<p>The HD Player&#8217;s motion-sensing pointer remote works much like a Wii remote control. Wherever you move it, a tiny leaf-shaped cursor appears on-screen. A Hide button on the remote will hide the cursor while you watch slideshows. The remote&#8217;s Back button is helpful; when pressed, it backs you out of one screen using visual effects that make the screen shrink into the TV as if you were moving backward.</p>
<p>A play button appears on the first photo in a folder so users can select this icon to quickly start slideshows. Whenever the HD Player receives new Kodak Gallery Picture Mail, or a slideshow is created on a connected PC, yellow alert circles appear on the screen to notify users and a number in the middle of these yellow circles indicates how many new items are available for viewing.</p>
<p>Some content on my PCs took a little while to be recognized by the HD Player, including podcasts that I subscribe to on iTunes. When they did show up, both audio and video podcasts played without issue and on-screen playback buttons made them easy to control.</p>
<p>The HD Player uses your photos to create automatically generated slideshows, called Picture Chronicles, once a week. These Picture Chronicles use up to 50 photos from the same time of year in all of your folders, for instance grouping all Thanksgiving photos together from the past five years.</p>
<p>Kodak has plans to make its player Mac-compatible in the future and also hopes to add other partnerships with new types of content following its YouTube announcement early next year.</p>
<p>The Kodak Theatre HD Player does its job well, bringing photos and videos that might otherwise live only on your PC to your big screen HDTV. For the holidays, this device could be a real plus. But Kodak has some work to do to make this a more useful Web-connected tool.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>After spending summer vacation shooting the sights, many people face the same chore: labeling and organizing digital photos before forgetting what they are and where they were taken.</p>
<p>Now there&#8217;s a way to upload photos that are already labeled with their exact latitude and longitude using geotagging, the fancy name for labeling data with information on its geographic origin. Photos with &#8220;geotags&#8221; have coordinates embedded invisibly in them. Some programs or online photo services use these tags to generate maps showing just where each photo was taken, or to label or organize the images. Not long ago, this capability was mostly done through manual labeling or with costly equipment.</p>

<p>This week, I tested the $129 Eye-Fi Explore Card (<a href="http://EyeFi.com" rel="external">EyeFi.com</a>), a special two-gigabyte memory card from Eye-Fi Inc. that adds a photo geotagging feature to Eye-Fi&#8217;s original functionality: the automatic wireless uploading of photos, straight from a digital camera to a home computer or photo-sharing service. If all goes well, users can capture and upload what are essentially geographically prelabeled batches of digital photos &#8212; with minimal effort and time.</p>
<p>But after days of testing, I found myself more frustrated as I used this wireless memory card in various places and situations, and found the tagging to be unreliable in one scenario. (Eye-Fi Inc. said my experiences weren&#8217;t typical.) At home in Washington, D.C., and while on a business trip to California, I tried it using a two-year-old Kodak digital camera and two different Vista laptops, though it also works on Macs.</p>
<p>Eye-Fi introduced the Explore Card as a follow-up to the company&#8217;s original wireless memory card, which it introduced last fall. Once set up, the first Eye-Fi card initiated the transferring of photos to a computer or Web site whenever the digital camera was turned on and as long as it was near a pre-associated wireless network.</p>
<p>Through a partnership with Skyhook Wireless, the Explore card can automatically label photos with their latitude and longitude using data from the Skyhook&#8217;s Wi-Fi positioning system. As long as a photo is captured within the Skyhook coverage area, which the company says covers 70% of North America, and the geotagging is enabled, each photo will be coded with data identifying where it was captured.</p>

<p>The Explore Card turned otherwise normal photo-sharing sites into mini maps showing where I had traveled while on a business trip in Silicon Valley. I set my account up to work with Flickr, Kodak Gallery, Snapfish, Shutterfly and Picasa Web Albums, though only one will work at a time. Flickr, Picasa Web Albums and Smugmug make use of geotagged photos by tagging shots with their location data, such as &#8220;Downtown Palo Alto, California.&#8221; I used Flickr and Picasa Web Albums to instantaneously generate a map showing where I was when I took photos.</p>
<p>On Flickr, each image was represented by a pink dot associated with one of several photos displayed in a horizontal bar below the map. This map can be searched for specific tags (photo labels) or locations and can be narrowed to show images from everyone who uses Flickr, just your own photostream, or only photos from friends or contacts. My searches returned results in seconds, finding shots that were geotagged with &#8220;Palo Alto&#8221; and tagged by me as containing flowers. I enjoyed looking at other Flickr users&#8217; photos when I searched everyone&#8217;s images, specifically in cities where I recognized landmarks.</p>
<p>Picasa Web Albums showed each geotagged image on a map by placing tiny versions of each photo on the map. In certain cases, when I had multiple photos taken at the same spot, photos appeared with lines drawn from them to a spot, much like spokes of a wheel. I also looked at my Picasa photos on maps in Google Earth; a quick link to the program is conveniently found at the top of the Picasa Web Albums screen.</p>
<p>Another key feature of the Explore Card is its hotspot connectivity. The card is capable of working in any Wayport location, which includes McDonald&#8217;s (MCD) restaurants and certain airports and hotels. Though using Wayport locations normally requires sign-ins and/or payment via a computer screen, the Explore Card works as soon as the camera is turned on in these locations. This service is free for the first year, but after that, it costs $19 annually to continue.</p>
<p>Finally, the Explore Card notifies users via SMS or email messages when photos have either started or finished uploading; or if these uploads are interrupted, which happened to me a few times. This is useful in Wayport wireless zones, where the camera has no real way of signaling when an upload is finished or when a computer isn&#8217;t handy.</p>
<p>In a hotel with a flaky Wi-Fi network, the Explore Card was crippled, though I blame the hotel for this inconvenience. But even when I traveled to a local McDonald&#8217;s, where Eye-Fi&#8217;s maker has a deal for free Wi-Fi for its cards, the Eye-Fi stuttered and couldn&#8217;t consistently upload photos. When I plugged the card directly into my laptops, the results weren&#8217;t much better.</p>
<p>If you aren&#8217;t within Wi-Fi range while taking a photo, it won&#8217;t be geotagged. I ran into this issue in one instance: On California&#8217;s highway 101, I took a handful of photos, but when I checked my Eye-Fi account later, none of these photos was automatically geotagged.</p>
<p>Some people worry about privacy settings when it comes to uploading geotagged photos directly to a sharing Web site. Settings within the Eye-Fi Manager make it easy to adjust permissions to determine who can see your photos within each of about 25 sharing sites.</p>
<p>Users can opt to share photos only to a home computer through their own Wi-Fi network, and a special card is designed for just that: the $79 Eye-Fi Home. This is meant to serve as a shortcut for transfers.</p>
<p>The original Eye-Fi, which costs $99, was a useful tool as a wireless memory card, but I didn&#8217;t have as much luck with the more expensive Eye-Fi Explore. Still, when it did work, I found geotagging to be a great way of automatically labeling and organizing my photos. Instead of just being neatly stored in a folder on your computer, geotagged images are given a spark of life and relevancy when plotted out on a map.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>It&#8217;s still too hard to share personal videos with friends and family in a truly satisfying manner. Huge video files take a long time to upload and download. And, even when you share clips via online streaming services that eliminate tedious downloads, you don&#8217;t get the fun experience of watching your videos together with others.</p>
<p>This week I tested SeeToo, a free service that lets you share videos in the same time that it takes to open and watch them on your own computer. Even better, you get to watch the video along with the people with whom you&#8217;re sharing it and type comments to each other in real time.</p>
<p>SeeToo works when one user selects a video to share with other people, who get an emailed hyperlink to SeeToo&#8217;s Web site, <a href="http://seetoo.com" rel="external">seetoo.com</a>. After opening the link, these people join a SeeToo session during which everyone can watch the same video at the same time.</p>

<p>While the video is playing for the group, each viewer can pause, rewind and fast-forward the video. A space below the playback screen allows friends to send instant messages to one another during the session. There aren&#8217;t any limits to the size or type of video file that is shared, and other types of media &#8212; including music and photos &#8212; can also be shared on SeeToo without size restrictions.</p>
<p>SeeToo sounds too good to be true, and in many of my tests, it was. The service became available to the public in January in its beta, or test, stage. But I&#8217;ve used many other products in beta that were in better shape than SeeToo. And there is one major catch: Once a video-sharing session is over, the participants, other than the person sharing, can no longer access the video.</p>
<p>People who are invited to watch videos on the service can do so using any popular Web browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox or Safari) on Windows (MSFT) computers and Macs (AAPL). But the person actually supplying the video and initiating the sharing session can use only a Windows PC. The initiator also must download a browser plug-in, which seems old-fashioned in the world of Web-based applications. And sharing sessions time out after 15 minutes of inactivity on the initiator&#8217;s side, after which point the email link doesn&#8217;t work.</p>
<p>I was able to successfully initiate a SeeToo session using Firefox and Internet Explorer on an older Windows XP computer but had trouble with two computers running Windows Vista: Neither worked with SeeToo using Internet Explorer and only one worked using Firefox. SeeToo says this is due in part to Microsoft&#8217;s new Service Pack 1 for Vista, and the company claims it will have this problem fixed by today. I also had trouble with the sound.</p>
<p>The concept behind SeeToo is also somewhat limiting. Some people may not be able to watch a video exactly when someone else wants to watch it. Some might rather watch videos alone than with others. And typing out back-and-forth chats while videos are playing could be somewhat of a distraction from watching the video.</p>
<p>I tested SeeToo by sharing video with family and friends and watching video they shared. My sister and I got a kick out of watching video footage from a wedding I attended in October. I shot the video using an inexpensive, low-resolution Flip Video camera and the footage looked pretty good. But SeeToo&#8217;s site shares video on a rather small screen, and we both wished it were larger.</p>
<p>We sent instant messages to one another in a small space below the screen, making comments about the guests&#8217; dance moves and the DJ&#8217;s choice of music. I used on-screen tools to pause the video when the camera passed by a friend whom I wanted my sister to see. To take a second look, she selected her screen&#8217;s Take Control button and rewound the footage to see my friend.</p>
<p>For the first two seconds of a video, users can see a small image in the top right corner of their screen that displays what the other people are seeing. SeeToo explained that this is a way of confirming one person is indeed seeing the same screen as another person.</p>
<p>I originally invited three people to watch the video with me. One friend I invited was at work, where his computer restricts him from watching videos. When he got home that night, the email hyperlink didn&#8217;t work &#8212; nor did it explain that the session had expired. Instead, it crashed his Firefox browser. I also invited my boss to watch the video with me, but he only saw my invitation two hours later when the session was over.</p>
<p>I didn&#8217;t even try to invite my parents to see the video because neither of them sit in front of a computer all day long and they wouldn&#8217;t have received my invitation in time to see the video.</p>
<p>In some ways, it was probably better that the other people I invited to watch the video weren&#8217;t able to see it, because the instant-message chat screen currently labels everyone as &#8220;buddy,&#8221; without distinguishing one person from another. SeeToo hopes to change this in future versions of the service by offering users a chance to register, thus receiving a specific nickname for chatting purposes. As of now, no one who uses SeeToo needs to enter any personal information such as a name or email address, which is a plus. SeeToo is also ad-free as of now, but the company plans to monetize parts of the service sometime this summer.</p>
<p>I also shared music and photos with friends using SeeToo, but this feature isn&#8217;t obvious; the site is primarily focused on sharing videos. Music playlists can&#8217;t currently be shared with friends, nor can photo slideshows be shared. Instead, individual songs or photos must be selected and shared within a session, one at a time.</p>
<p>SeeToo has high hopes of adding many features in the future, probably by June. Those features include a full-size, higher-resolution viewing screen for sharing and watching videos; a fully Web-based, download-free version of SeeToo; photo slideshows; using names to distinguish viewers; and sharing sessions that don&#8217;t time out. In addition, it hopes to let Mac users initiate sharing sessions. The site aims to be out of its testing stage by September.</p>
<p>Right now, SeeToo can come in handy if you know someone else is at a computer and ready to watch a video. The invited guest never downloads anything and neither party needs to register to use SeeToo. But its screen is a bit on the small side, and the service needs to become more versatile before it can be seen as a reliable sharing site.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>As more and more people switch from desktop PCs to laptops, one very handy piece of technology can easily get lost in transition: the mouse.</p>
<p>But several companies now sell wireless mice designed especially for laptop users for whom the laptop touch pad just won&#8217;t do. These mice are small, sleek, colorful gadgets that more fashion-conscious computer users can happily show off in an airport, in a coffee shop or on campus.</p>

<p>This week I tested three entry-level mobile mice designed for laptops, from Logitech (LOGI), <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=msft'>Microsoft</a> (MSFT) and <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=FO'>Kensington Computer Products Group</a>. These $30 mice include a USB receiver that plugs into a laptop, allowing the mouse to work wirelessly. When not in use, this receiver fits snugly beneath the mouse, turning its power off to save battery as it snaps into place. These mice are also somewhat smaller than regular mice so they can easily slip into a laptop bag.</p>
<p>Mobile mice are now more stylish than the traditional desktop mice, and like laptops and digital cameras, come in various shapes and colors. The mice I tested are available in pink, white, red, blue, orange and gray. Next week, the Microsoft mouse I used will be available in shades of pomegranate, aloe, dragon fruit (dark pink) and milk chocolate; a khaki-colored shade called cr&egrave;me br&ucirc;l&eacute;e will follow in June.</p>
<p>I tried Logitech&#8217;s $30 V220 Cordless Optical Mouse in black, Microsoft&#8217;s $30 Wireless Notebook Optical Mouse 3000 in aloe, and Kensington&#8217;s $35 Ci75m Wireless Notebook Mouse in orange. To gain some perspective on high-end mobile mice, I also looked at two pricier options from Logitech: the $50 V470 Cordless Laser Mouse with Bluetooth (instead of a USB receiver) and the $70 VX Nano Cordless Laser Mouse.</p>
<p>My vote for a favorite low-end mobile mouse had me struggling between portability and comfort. But overall, I found that the Logitech V220 offered the best combination of small size and usability. The Microsoft mouse was also comfortable to use, but its slightly bulkier size made it less portable, and it didn&#8217;t feel as sturdy as the Logitech. While the Kensington was the flattest and most portable, it wasn&#8217;t as comfortable to use as the Logitech or Microsoft mice.</p>
<p>To conserve battery, all three of these mice go into low-power mode after 10 minutes of nonuse, but none of them turns off completely. Battery indicators light up when juice is running low. According to company estimates, the Microsoft mouse has a battery life of over six months and the Logitech mouse has a battery life of up to six months. The Kensington mouse&#8217;s battery life was estimated to be three months. I didn&#8217;t use any of them long enough to prove the company claims.</p>
<p>These mice are compatible with Macs and PCs, and are plug-and-play &#8212; meaning you don&#8217;t need to install any additional software to make them work. I used each on laptops running Mac OS X and Windows Vista without any problems. The Microsoft and Logitech mice also can work with their own special software programs, but the extra features, such as reassigning a mouse button to open an application, aren&#8217;t really necessary for the average user.</p>
<p>The $30 Logitech V220 fit comfortably in my hand, with rubber grips on its sides and a generously sized, smooth-gliding rubber scroll wheel that made it easy to use. This scroll wheel can be nudged to the left or right for horizontal scrolling, a feature found on most of Logitech&#8217;s mice.</p>
<p>Unlike the Microsoft and Kensington mice, which show flashing red sensor lights, the Logitech uses an invisible optic sensor. This sounds cool, but because the mouse doesn&#8217;t use any lights, it can be left on accidentally. I did this a few times before remembering to stow the USB receiver in the mouse to automatically turn off its power.</p>
<p>Of the three, the Logitech mouse was the only one with a manual on/off switch &#8212; so you can turn it off without snapping the USB receiver into place in the mouse. This could save frequent travelers from having to detach the USB receiver every time they want to turn off the mouse, and could let people keep the receiver plugged into the laptop.</p>
<p>Kensington&#8217;s $35 Ci75m was the flattest mouse by far, making it a cinch to slip it into the outside pocket of my already full laptop bag on a train trip to New York. And this mouse has a bonus feature: It can work wirelessly or with a USB wire, which wraps up inside the mouse and serves as a backup in case the mouse runs out of battery. I tested this by removing the batteries and using only the USB wire, and it worked like a charm.</p>
<p>I also liked the way the Kensington USB receiver disappeared into the body of the mouse, while the Microsoft and Logitech receivers protruded a bit when stowed, adding to the thickness of the mouse when tucked into a laptop pocket.</p>
<p>But though this bright orange mouse received approving feedback from passersby, it wasn&#8217;t all that comfortable to use after a while. Its flatness saved room in my bag, but didn&#8217;t give my hand much support. It also felt flimsier than the Logitech, and its small wheel wasn&#8217;t as satisfying to use.</p>
<p>I received early test units of Microsoft&#8217;s $30 Wireless Notebook Optical Mouse 3000 in aloe, pomegranate and milk chocolate.</p>
<p>This mouse has rubber sides for a better grip, like the Logitech, and an arched shape for comfort. Its wheel is slightly smaller than Logitech&#8217;s, though its overall size was bigger and more like that of a regular mouse &#8212; not one designed specifically for mobile use. But even though the Microsoft mouse was larger, it didn&#8217;t feel as solid as Logitech&#8217;s; rather, it felt more like the thin Kensington. Its right and left buttons felt less stable, and its wheel didn&#8217;t roll as smoothly.</p>
<p>I did like Microsoft&#8217;s nod to new colors, and the aloe &#8212; a cool hue of green &#8212; was my favorite.</p>
<p>For people who don&#8217;t mind spending a little extra money on a mouse, the $50 V470 Cordless Laser uses Bluetooth, eliminating the need for a USB receiver altogether. It took only a couple seconds to pair this mouse to a MacBook with built-in Bluetooth, and it worked smoothly. A manual on/off switch on this mouse&#8217;s underside can help to conserve battery.</p>
<p>The $70 Logitech VX Nano Cordless Laser is sleek with shiny black accents and a silver-edged wheel. The &#8220;Nano&#8221; in this mouse&#8217;s name refers to its ultra tiny USB receiver, which sticks out only about a quarter of an inch when plugged in, so it can be left in a laptop at all times for ease-of-use. If needed, this receiver can be hidden away in the cavity of the mouse, under a snap-on lid. I used the VX Nano to glide around Web pages and Word documents with buttery smoothness.</p>
<p id="CHART">No matter what mouse you choose to use with your laptop, most will be considerably more comfortable than touch pads and trackpoints, especially while working on long, mouse-intensive projects. But of the three lower-end mobile mice, the Logitech V220 Cordless Optical Mouse delivers the best combination of comfort and transportability.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Search, by nature, doesn&#8217;t need to be overly exciting stuff. It usually involves typing a word in a box, pressing enter and reading results to find the best one &#8212; and this style works well for plenty of people, as is evidenced by Google&#8217;s success. But many would like to see search become smarter, more intuitive or even visually stimulating.</p>

<p>This week, I tested two applications that turn searching into feasts for the eyes. Instead of showing search results in lines of text, these results are visually based. One, called SpaceTime, displays search results in three-dimensional views that make images look as if they are flying onto the screen. The other, an actual search engine called Searchme, spreads image results out in fan-like patterns. Both SpaceTime and Searchme encourage people to search by choosing what looks visually familiar or accurate, rather than trying to discern what the text in a link might mean.</p>
<p>The idea of improved search isn&#8217;t a new one. Many have tried, ranging from Ask.com&#8217;s media-rich result pages to Mahalo.com&#8217;s human-powered search engine. But Google&#8217;s (GOOG) simplicity and experience have made it hard to beat, and competitors know the importance of relevant and reliable results. Rather than comparing these sites with the big G, I looked at them as add-ons that could be especially useful for certain searches.</p>
<p>Searchme, a search engine built from the ground up, is technically in private beta &#8212; meaning that it is still a work in progress and users must be invited to use it. The company gave me access to the site and created a link so that readers of this column could also use it: <a href="http://www.searchme.com/wsj" rel="external">www.searchme.com/wsj</a>. This Web-based tool works on Windows and Mac operating systems and in any major browser, and it tries to improve search by asking users to choose a category for their search terms.</p>
<p>For instance, when I typed &#8220;US Open&#8221; in the Searchme box, categories appeared to the right, including Tennis, Squash, Gambling &amp; Casinos and Golf. Since I was looking for the tennis-related grand slam, I chose the Tennis category and saved myself some typing. The more I used Searchme, the more I came to rely on these categories for faster, more-refined results.</p>

<p>Searchme&#8217;s visual search works by displaying snapshots of Web sites, each of which has the search term highlighted on its page. These pages fan out from the center to look like Cover Flow in <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=AAPL'>Apple</a> Inc.&#8217;s (AAPL) iTunes, visually sorting images like album covers in a jukebox so they can be flipped through until the best Web page is found.</p>
<p>By moving a cursor along a horizontal scroll bar below these pages, I skimmed through 10 to 15 Web sites in a matter of seconds, quickly weeding out unwanted sites. But these pages don&#8217;t allow interaction like scrolling down or playing of embedded videos. A button below these images reveals a list-view where text and links relating to the images are listed, but I kept this option hidden more often than not.</p>
<p>Though Searchme&#8217;s categories are helpful and I liked using visual searching, I did notice many more results, overall, while performing searches through Google and Yahoo (YHOO). A Google search for the Regency Hotel in New York City returned accurate links to the hotel&#8217;s Web site &#8212; and a map. Searchme&#8217;s first result was a defunct Web page for the Regency, and the younger search engine doesn&#8217;t yet have maps, news or stock quotes like Google.</p>
<p>Settings can be adjusted for Searchme, including one option to filter out adult content and another to open up new windows whenever a Web page is selected, so as not to lose the current page.</p>
<p>SpaceTime (<a href="http://www.spacetime.com" rel="external">www.spacetime.com</a>) differs from Searchme in that it doesn&#8217;t try to be its own search engine. Instead, it is a browser that works with established search engines and Web sites. It isn&#8217;t Web-based, like Searchme, and must be downloaded to a Windows (MSFT) PC (it doesn&#8217;t yet work on Macs). The intense 3-D graphics of this program work best on a computer with at least one gigabyte of system memory and 256 megabytes of dedicated video memory.</p>
<p>At first glance, SpaceTime appears to be a normal browser. It has the usual URL line where specific Web sites can be entered and a search box at the top right that can be set to search Google, Google Images, Yahoo, Yahoo Images, eBay (EBAY), Flickr, YouTube, RSS feeds or Amazon (AMZN).</p>
<p>But using this search box starts the fun of the product. Search results appear as images lined up on the screen, floating through space and descending into the distance in a 3-D visualization akin to that of Windows Vista&#8217;s Flip 3D. SpaceTime&#8217;s dark background gives it a dramatic edge, and each object is reflected in an artistic, glass-like surface. Results can be tweaked, turned, magnified and moved within this 3-D space.</p>
<p>When I performed normal Google or Yahoo searches, the returned results appeared as images of each Web site on which the searched term appeared. When I searched for images on Google, Yahoo or Flickr, the results came back in image-only fashion &#8212; not images embedded in Web sites &#8212; that looked stunning lined up in 3-D. Searches of eBay are especially useful on SpaceTime because each item up for bid zooms onto the screen as its own object along with its current price, number of bids and remaining auction time. YouTube searches return videos lined up in SpaceTime&#8217;s 3-D environment.</p>
<p>With all of these images flying in and out of the screen, things can get a little overwhelming. One pile of search results is called a stack, and each stack is automatically saved in a dock at the bottom of the screen, labeled with a thumbnail image of where you last left off. Searches can be saved and snapshots of screens can be captured and saved in the dock.</p>
<p>To return results as fast as possible, SearchTime says it will pull up just 10 at a time for image, product and video searches, or five pages at once for content-heavy sites. But in my tests, using two different Vista computers with 2GB of RAM each, I usually never saw more than five results at a time. The next five or 10 images can be retrieved by choosing a &#8220;Next Set&#8221; button at the bottom of the screen.</p>
<p>On-screen Web sites and objects are interactive, meaning that I could scroll down within a Web page or play a YouTube video within the SpaceTime screen. A clever magnifying glass pops up on the screen to pinpoint the original search term on each page.</p>
<p>SpaceTime allowed me to rapidly flip through tens or even hundreds of images and Web sites in a very short time, but it wasn&#8217;t perfect. Some search results took a while to load, only displaying the first object while the other lined-up objects appeared as empty frames because they were still loading. YouTube seemed sluggish and wasn&#8217;t as easy to navigate as some other searches, and Flickr was especially slow to load in a few of my tests.</p>
<p>SpaceTime is working on a Web-based version that won&#8217;t rely so heavily on each user&#8217;s PC specs, and Searchme is still in its testing phase, working to return more relevant results. But for now, these two sites turn search into a different, much more visually stimulating experience. After using these programs for a little while, I started to search differently &#8212; moving through results faster and clicking on fewer links that returned unwanted results. Though I&#8217;ll still rely on Google for basic searches, visual search can save time and turn searching into a fun process.</p>
