			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Like clockwork, retailers were ready for Microsoft Corp.&#8217;s (MSFT) Windows 7 release last week with new desktops, laptops and netbooks, those inexpensive, smaller laptops that have become popular in the past year. Included in this selection of netbooks are some that improved the poor screen resolutions that have plagued these tiny PCs.</p>

<p>Screen resolution isn&#8217;t the same as the size of the screen itself. Rather, it is related to the number of pixels—or distinct dots—on a display, and an indication of how much material can be seen on the screen without scrolling. A higher-resolution screen allows you to see more of a Web page, spreadsheet or list of emails than a lower-resolution screen, even if both are the same physical size.</p>
<p>Because higher-resolution screens cost more, most netbooks come with low-resolution screens to keep prices down. But poor resolution combined with a small netbook screen results in frustrating visuals, like Web pages that display just a small portion of their contents, forcing you to scroll down or horizontally to see the rest of the page.</p>
<p>This week, I tested two Windows 7 netbooks with unusually high-res screens: Hewlett-Packard Co.&#8217;s (HPQ) HP Mini 311 with an 11.6-inch screen and a resolution of 1,366-by-768 pixels, and Nokia Corp.&#8217;s (NOK) Booklet 3G with a 10.1-inch screen and a resolution of 1,280-by-720-pixels. Both these small computers display the bulk of most Web pages without any scrolling necessary—a big relief on a netbook.</p>
<p>Though high-resolution screens make these netbooks easier on the eyes than others, I still had trouble adjusting to their shrunken features. I liked typing on the HP Mini&#8217;s generous keyboard, which H-P says is 92 percent of full size. But its touchpad buttons felt stiff and uncomfortably located at the edge of the computer. The Nokia Booklet had the opposite problem: Its touchpad and buttons worked fine, but its tiny keys made me feel like I was typing on a kiddie computer.</p>

<p>Nokia is a bit more of a newsmaker here, because when the Booklet 3G (nokiausa.com) comes out in mid-November, it will be the first foray by the Finnish mobile-device company into the laptop space. Best Buy (BBY) began taking advance orders for them this week. It costs $300 if purchased with AT&#038;T Inc.&#8217;s (T) two-year Data Connect plan, which costs $60 a month for five gigabytes of data and allows users to toggle back and forth between two kinds of wireless connections, cellular 3G and Wi-Fi. If purchased without the AT&#038;T plan, the Booklet 3G costs $600—a lot for a netbook—including only Windows 7 Starter, the low-end version of the new OS, and one gigabyte of memory.</p>
<p>The thing most people will notice right away about Nokia&#8217;s netbook is that it seems to take its design cues directly from Apple Inc. (AAPL) Like the MacBook Pro, the Nokia Booklet 3G is made from a single piece of aluminum, and its keyboard is made of black Chiclet-style keys. Its edges are rounded and smooth. I used one with a glossy black lid, but it will also come in shades of ice white or azure blue.</p>
<p>Nokia boasts that this netbook&#8217;s battery will last for 12 hours; after running it through a harsh test with its screen cranked up to the brightest setting, Wi-Fi on, music playing on a continuous loop and all power-saving features turned off, it ran for almost eight hours straight. This means that under normal circumstances, the battery might last for a remarkable 10 hours.</p>
<p>The Booklet 3G that I used differs from Nokia&#8217;s final release version in a few ways: Mine wasn&#8217;t loaded with AT&#038;T&#8217;s Connection Manager software, which enables switching between Wi-Fi and 3G; it lacked the Nokia Social Hub software, which the company says allows users to track social-media feeds and text messages; and the GPS wasn&#8217;t yet connected to the U.S. map data server. My Booklet 3G included Ovi Suite, a Nokia-designed software program to bridge the connection between some Nokia smartphones and the Booklet 3G, like iTunes for the iPhone or BlackBerry&#8217;s Desktop Manager. But the software I had wasn&#8217;t the final version.</p>
<p>Unlike Nokia, H-P is no stranger to netbooks, having released nine of its Mini models in the past year. The HP Mini 311 (hp.com/go/mini) costs $400 when purchased with Windows XP and costs an additional $50 when loaded with Windows 7 Home Premium. The Mini that I tested costs $474 because it also had two gigabytes of memory rather than one gigabyte.</p>
<p>The H-P model is a little bigger all around compared with the Nokia, with an inch-larger screen; it weighs 3.22 pounds compared with 2.76 pounds for the Nokia. Both felt relatively thin and light, and I carried them home together from my office with ease. The HP Mini 311 had H-P&#8217;s subtle Black Swirl pattern on its lid—a faint pattern of silver swirls noticeable only at certain angles. It also comes in White Swirl.</p>
<p>I ran the same battery test on the HP as I did with the Nokia, and it lasted four hours and 15 minutes, giving it roughly six hours of juice under normal circumstances. H-P estimates that the Mini 311&#8217;s battery will last for six hours and 25 minutes.</p>
<p>I didn&#8217;t run into any problems while installing and using several programs on each of these netbooks, including Windows Live Essentials, Mozilla&#8217;s Firefox browser, Picasa 3, TweetDeck, Adobe (ADBE) Reader and iTunes. The HP Mini felt more responsive and, in fact, loaded some programs a little faster, but it had twice the memory.</p>
<p>Both netbooks have slots for memory cards, HDMI ports for connecting to HD screens and three USB ports. And they come with built-in Web cams, a common feature on netbooks.</p>
<p>A cold start on both the Mini 311 and Booklet 3G required roughly the same amount of time: one minute and eight seconds for the H-P, and a minute and 12 seconds for the Nokia. But restarting was a different story. While playing a song in iTunes, running three Web pages in Firefox and using TweetDeck, I selected Restart. The HP Mini 311 took a minute and 20 seconds while the Nokia took nearly two minutes.</p>
<p>Even without the AT&#038;T discount, the Nokia Booklet 3G&#8217;s extra-long battery life and sleek design will be worth the extra money for some people—just beware its tiny keyboard. The HP Mini 311 is a good all-around netbook with a comfortable keyboard for typing. No one will be disappointed by the terrific screen resolutions.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>For the past week, I&#8217;ve been stalking my sister, my boyfriend and my boss. They&#8217;ve also been stalking me, and we still like one another.</p>
<p>All four of us have been using an application that, once downloaded onto a mobile device, uses location-based technology to track its users&#8217; movements. The app then displays the user&#8217;s location on a map for friends to see, so they can know where the person is at all times.</p>
<p>We used <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=goog'>Google</a> Latitude, a new feature in the search giant&#8217;s Google Maps mobile application as of today. People can get this if they upgrade their current version of Google Maps or install Maps for the first time. It works on Google&#8217;s G1, most color BlackBerrys, most Windows Mobile devices and some other smart phones. Google says it will soon work on the iPhone, iPod touch and Sony Ericsson phones.</p>

<p>Google (GOOG) is arriving late to the party where location-based apps like Loopt (<a href="http://Loopt.com" rel="external">Loopt.com</a>) from Loopt Inc. and Where (<a href="http://where.com" rel="external">where.com</a>) from uLocate Communications are already following people on a variety of mobile devices ranging from basic cellphones to iPhones. These apps rely on GPS satellites, Wi-Fi or cellular towers to locate you and your friends, and then use this data to encourage people to find nearby attractions, local information or social networks.</p>
<p>Latitude is an opt-in-only feature, meaning no one can see your location &#8212; or vice versa &#8212; without permission. It uses either GPS satellites or cell-tower and Wi-Fi location technology depending on your mobile device&#8217;s specifications and what&#8217;s most available in certain spots. My trusted testers and I used Google Latitude on three different kinds of BlackBerrys: the Pearl 8130, Curve 8320 and two Curve 8900s. Of these, only the 8900s made use of GPS.</p>

Location data can update every several minutes when a user is moving.</div>
<p>Along with their locations, friends can share other information on Latitude by updating a status line or changing their picture, which appears as a tiny representative icon on a map. Changes to one&#8217;s status or picture will be reflected in Google Talk, Google&#8217;s instant-messaging tool, but this doesn&#8217;t integrate with other status-related social-networking programs like Facebook or Twitter, and thus may saddle people with another status entry to update.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s easy to find fault in Latitude since it often spots people inaccurately, including showing my sister in Boston&#8217;s Charles River, rather than in a neighborhood along the river. It&#8217;s worth noting that tracking technology in general, including GPS, can be inaccurate. But even with these inaccuracies, my friends and I liked finding one another on our respective maps and used this geographic information to send location-specific messages to each other: I joked with my boyfriend about not leaving his house on time for a dinner and commended my sister on getting up early for church on Sunday.</p>
<p>Usability issues aside, location-based services like Latitude can be just plain creepy, especially when a Big Brother like Google is tracking your whereabouts. So Google incorporated easy-to-change privacy settings so that locations can be automatically detected, manually entered or completely hidden from other people. Or people can sign out of Latitude altogether.</p>
<p>Likewise, users can adjust the level of geographic information they&#8217;re willing to share with each person. For example, I might want to share with my boyfriend my best available location information, like a specific spot on a street, and share only city-level location information with my boss.</p>
<p>The city-level information would be helpful for my parents, who often wish they had a better idea of when I&#8217;m traveling for work and where I&#8217;ll be. But my parents aren&#8217;t likely to download Google Latitude onto their mobile devices anytime soon. For them, a special Latitude widget in iGoogle &#8212; Google&#8217;s personalized home page feature on a PC &#8212; might be best. This widget is also useful for people who may have Latitude on a mobile device but are sitting at their desks and want to see where their friends are.</p>
<p>As expected, Latitude worked differently between me and the people who live in the same area, compared with how it worked between me and people who live hundreds of miles away, like my sister in Boston. For example, my boyfriend and I are more likely to use our respective locations to plan where we&#8217;ll meet for dinner, while my sister&#8217;s current location is just fun to see. Still, my sister and I know one another&#8217;s neighborhoods well enough to have an idea of where the other was, and we felt a little more plugged in with each other&#8217;s lives when we saw one another on our maps.</p>
<p>People who live in urban settings will likely use Latitude differently than those who live in the suburbs. One of my testers noted that it could be fun using Latitude to see where friends are out in a city on any given night. But because Latitude sometimes pegs people&#8217;s locations as a lot farther away than they are &#8212; one test spotted a friend 1.5 miles away from his real location &#8212; this might be tough data to go on.</p>
<p>After using Latitude for a while, I grew to recognize familiar location mistakes like home or work, and knew where my friends actually were. But it&#8217;s unfortunate that locations aren&#8217;t more accurately marked.</p>
<p>Latitude returned the most precise location results when determining where the two GPS-using BlackBerry Curve 8900s were at any given time, though these spots still weren&#8217;t perfect. If a mobile device doesn&#8217;t have GPS or if GPS simply isn&#8217;t available in the area, cellular towers and Wi-Fi will help a determine location. These alternate methods use less battery than GPS, so they will work instead of GPS when Google Maps isn&#8217;t running in the foreground of a device.</p>
<p>Latitude users can opt to allow their location to automatically update every several minutes while they&#8217;re moving. A Friends List that appears with the map lists people in order of who is moving starting with who moved most recently. Users can send text messages or call friends directly from this list, or find nearby spots like bars or movie theaters by typing into a search box; restaurant information includes ratings and reviews. Directions to and from friends&#8217; locations are also available, and you can plan your route via car, mass transit or walking.</p>
<p>Location-based services like Latitude are great for keeping tabs on friends and could even come in handy in other situations &#8212; such as when parents want to know where their kids are or when elderly relatives want to let someone always know their whereabouts. But I wouldn&#8217;t want to depend on them in an emergency.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>It can be hard to find just what you want in the 24-hour news cycle that constantly churns content out online.</p>
<p>One way to find the information you want is by setting up computer-generated alerts. These electronic notifications are relatively simple to use and offer a range of helpful services, from a virtual heads-up when your name is mentioned online to messages about a product&#8217;s price suddenly dropping.</p>
<p>For years, I&#8217;ve used Google Alerts as a way of keeping track of myself online. If my name is mentioned in a blog or if this column appears on the Web, such as on the site of a newspaper that syndicates it, a Google Alert sends me an email about it. Google Alerts can work for you to find a variety of things, such as telling you if a video of a favorite band popped up online or that a blogger posted something about last night&#8217;s episode of &#8220;Mad Men.&#8221;</p>
<p>In about a month, <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=goog'>Google</a> will begin delivering these alerts to users via feeds, as well as emails. Google (GOOG) certainly isn&#8217;t alone in the alerts arena, as Yahoo (YHOO), Microsoft (MSFT) and AOL (TWX) are also players. This week I tried two small companies that recently joined the mission to help users find the Web content using alerts.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Pinpointing Searches</h5>
<p>I tried Alerts.com and Yotify.com, and found worthwhile features in both. While Google Alerts does a good job of finding search terms in news, blogs and videos, Alerts.com and Yotify use forms that are a cinch to fill out and let you pinpoint your searches.</p>
<p>Alerts.com offers to notify users via email, SMS text messages or even voice calls to a cellphone or landline. The site organizes your alerts on a personalized Web page and uses a desktop application called Elertz to tell you when an alert has generated results. I liked this site&#8217;s flexibility: It not only gave me different ways to receive notifications, but also enabled a variety of options for time-specific deliveries of alerts.</p>
<p>But Yotify has advantages of its own, including the ability to integrate with FriendFeed and Facebook so friends can offer their recommendations or opinions. It also lets users search for event tickets or items auctioned on eBay (EBAY). And a smart preview panel gives you an idea of the type of results your search will return before you submit the request for an alert.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Viewing Results</h5>
<p>For now, Google Alerts and Yotify will send alert notifications only via email, though all three services will let you view your alert results online. All three are free, but SMS alerts sent to a cellphone via Alerts.com may not be, depending on your plan.</p>
<p>All in all, I found there were certain things each service was good at doing. For example, Alerts.com lets me know college football scores when I want them: only after the final score; at the end of each quarter and after the final score; or at the end of each quarter, after the final score and after each time a team scores points. Yotify gave me detailed options in a Craigslist search for furniture, including showing only listings with photos or just those that included the word &#8220;sofa&#8221; in a title; it will even hunt for a specific price range.</p>
<p>For the person who wants to spend minimal time creating basic alerts, Google Alerts will do the trick. These can be narrowed down to show results that fall into the News, Web, Blogs, Video or Groups categories, or you can perform more-blanketed searches using a Comprehensive category.</p>
<p>Alerts.com offers plenty of simple alerts that require only a bit of scheduling to set up. Each alert appears as a widget that can be expanded, edited or deleted with a simple click, and this page has a clean look with attractive, cohesive graphics.</p>
<p>I didn&#8217;t care much for Elertz, the desktop component of Alerts.com, because once installed, it notified me of new Alerts data using an irksome star that glowed red until I checked my notifications. Elertz didn&#8217;t work properly on my Windows XP machine until Alerts.com fixed a bug.</p>
<p>But Alerts.com&#8217;s price watch and price protection alerts are incredibly useful. Price watch looks to see if an item&#8217;s price drops into a lower price range, at which point users are notified. Price protection watches to see if products you bought are now on sale so you can get a refund. I tried both, and I&#8217;m hoping I&#8217;ll hear soon that a specific pair of Anthropologie boots is on sale.</p>
<p>Yotify uses the idea of virtual scouts that scour the Web for specific information. Scout findings can be condensed or expanded in one click, and results can be filtered for more specific findings or shared with friends via Facebook or FriendFeed.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Scout Work</h5>
<p>But some scouts took too much work to set up. When I tried to set up a scout for college football scores, I didn&#8217;t see a sports category (Alerts.com had a colorful NCAA icon right on its home page). Instead, I had to choose News, then select ESPN, then NCAAF and finally enter &#8220;Penn State&#8221; in a key word box for my scout. And after all that, the scout offered results only daily or hourly via email.</p>
<p>I would also prefer if I could better organize my scout lists. As it was, all of my results appeared in one list: The NCAA scout was right above the scout that found Obama mentions on Huffington Post, and below that were results for YouTube&#8217;s most-watched videos. Yotify says it will add ways to more neatly arrange data in the next month or so.</p>
<p>On average, Yotify returned more results instantly, such as 10 instant Craigslist sofa results compared with Alerts.com&#8217;s two in the first few hours.</p>
<p>Overall, these sites are worth trying so you can find which alert system works best for you and stop wasting time searching the Web the old-fashioned way.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Basic cellphones, unlike larger BlackBerrys or iPhones, are still favored by plenty of users who would rather carry a small device that feels more comfortable to hold to the ear. But the phones&#8217; size involves a trade-off: cramped keypads and clumsy software that can make these phones a pain to use for anything other than calls.</p>
<p>As technology continues to shrink, more features are being packed into these small mobile devices, making navigation and ease-of-use more important. This week, I tested the Motorola ROKR E8, which costs $199 with a two-year T-Mobile service agreement and makes a real attempt to be more user-friendly. The device, which comes out on July 7, isn&#8217;t much bigger than a typical cellphone but its standout feature is its keyboard, which dynamically changes to accommodate whatever you&#8217;re doing at the time, revealing only buttons that would be of use to that particular function.</p>

<p>The surface of the ROKR E8 has no physical keys at all. In its off or resting state, in fact, it&#8217;s just a black surface with rows of tiny, unlabeled bumps. But this surface is actually divided into two: The top half works like a typical cellphone display while the bottom half projects virtual keys onto its surface and uses the rows of bumps to give these keys a physical presence.</p>
<p>When making a call or sending a text message, the ROKR&#8217;s surface displays a regular phone keypad. But as soon as a music shortcut button is pressed, the surface morphs into five buttons for music navigation: play/pause, seek forward, seek backward, shuffle and repeat. Pressing another shortcut button to start the ROKR&#8217;s camera mode shows four buttons for zooming in or out, switching to playback mode or changing to video. Motorola (MOT) calls this its ModeShift technology. Though the lower half of the ROKR can be considered a touch device, objects can&#8217;t be manipulated with gestures like pinching or dragging as with the Apple (AAPL) iPhone&#8217;s multitouch screen.</p>
<p>Overall, I found that the ROKR E8&#8217;s dynamic keyboard gave me a real advantage in figuring out how to use the multi-functionality of the phone. Its changing keyboard eliminated a lot of guesswork and time that I may have spent hunting through menus for a command. And true to its name, the ROKR (pronounced &#8220;rocker&#8221;) is focused on its music phone functionality with an FM radio, a neatly organized music menu and a speaker that has convincingly simulated surround-sound effects.</p>
<p>But this ROKR didn&#8217;t always jam out in perfect pitch. A touch-sensitive semicircle in the center is meant to make scrolling through long lists easier &#8212; much like Apple Inc.&#8217;s iPod wheel. But because this tool on the ROKR isn&#8217;t a full circle, scrolling felt unsatisfying. You also can&#8217;t buy songs with the ROKR, or even mark songs for purchasing later on a PC.</p>
<p>And while the morphing buttons look futuristic and hip, I experienced a few instances when the phone was slow to react after I touched a button, as when I touched the seek forward button while listening to music or when I chose to open an MMS message I sent to a friend.</p>
<p>Twenty-two tiny bumps dot half of the ROKR&#8217;s surface, and the surface below each bump vibrates when it&#8217;s touched to provide sensory feedback. Nothing is ever physically pressed down, though the vibration response leads you to think otherwise.</p>
<p>A smart switch on the side can be held down to turn it on or off, or switched into the upward position to lock the device, preventing accidental calls or battery drain.</p>
<p>The ROKR E8 runs on T-Mobile&#8217;s (DT) GPRS/EDGE connection, which felt sluggish at times. And not even the dynamic keyboard on this device could help make email or instant messaging easier.</p>
<p>It has a two-megapixel still camera with an 8x digital zoom that can change into video-camera mode in one step. Two gigabytes of memory are built into the ROKR, and more memory can be added via a microSD card slot, which is hidden beneath a back panel. A one-gigabyte microSD card comes with the ROKR. Without this card, the internal memory will hold about 1,500 songs.</p>
<p>With help from a USB cord and Windows (MSFT) Media Player 11, I transferred over 200 MP3s onto my ROKR. Album art that transferred with my songs appeared on-screen as songs played, and the speaker gave off a powerful sound. Built-in stereo Bluetooth can send tunes to Bluetooth-enabled stereo speakers, and it took me just a few seconds to pair my ROKR with Motorola&#8217;s EQ5 speakers.</p>
<p>A preloaded program by Shazam lets users hold the ROKR up to any speaker playing a song, and in 30 seconds, identifies the track title, artist, and album art. I held the ROKR up to my alarm clock radio and it worked perfectly. But once these songs are recognized, the track data can&#8217;t be used to buy the song or even to transfer a request to buy that song to a PC for buying online at another time.</p>
<p>The ROKR&#8217;s FM radio will work only if its included stereo headset is plugged in because the headset has the radio antenna. But once the headset is plugged in, the radio will play via the ROKR&#8217;s speaker.</p>
<p>The ROKR E8 has an audio technology called Crystal Talk, which Motorola says allows your phone to perform better in loud environments. Even if the person on the other end of your phone is in a noisy place, the company says Crystal Talk will raise the volume to improve the call. I tested this by speaking to someone on the ROKR while turning a hairdryer on beside the phone. I then used a regular Razr cellphone. The person on the other end said that the ROKR sounded slightly, but noticeably, better.</p>
<p>Motorola&#8217;s ROKR E8 is a head-turning phone with many built-in advances that give it a smarter interface. One might wonder what other ModeShift functions the company will integrate into its devices in the future, such as a full QWERTY keyboard. The overall idea of a dynamic keyboard is a step ahead for small devices. It forces the phone to work more intuitively and improves navigation while looking stylishly sleek at the same time.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>My Dad will be proud to read that I&#8217;ve spent much of the past week studying my finances and figuring out my budget. But I&#8217;m willing to bet (figuratively since betting isn&#8217;t in my new budget) he&#8217;ll be surprised to learn that I did this in no time using a Web-based program that didn&#8217;t cost me a dime.</p>
<p>This week, I tested a free Web site called <a href="http://Mint.com" rel="external">Mint.com</a> that serves as a Web home base for account information from credit cards, credit unions and bank accounts. The site securely and automatically logs into those accounts, fetches the latest data and presents the information in easy-to-read and useful ways.</p>

<p>Mint hopes to help users get a better handle on where their money is going, how much is in each account, and what can be done to budget that money more efficiently. It sends automatic alerts about account data or when you exceed your budget. It can even translate a bank&#8217;s often odd rendering of merchants&#8217; names into plain-English versions of your financial transactions.</p>
<p>Starting May 6, the site will let users add investments, such as individual retirement accounts and 401(k) plans, to their accounts, though Mint isn&#8217;t designed for serious investors. Today, readers can get sneak peak access to this Investments feature via <a href="http://www.mint.com/wsj" rel="external">www.mint.com/wsj</a>. In June, Mint will add auto loans, student loans and mortgages.</p>
<p>Mint won&#8217;t work offline because it&#8217;s completely Web-based, and can&#8217;t be used to pay bills or move any money around, meaning people will still need to visit separate sites for bill payments and money transfers.</p>
<p>Talk of money-related software programs often brings to mind the old reliables: <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=intu'>Intuit</a> Inc.&#8217;s (INTU) Quicken and <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=msft'>Microsoft</a> (MSFT) Money. But some of these programs can cost close to $100 and require intense bookkeeping. Stripped-down versions of these products are available, but these still include fees. <a href="http://Geezeo.com" rel="external">Geezeo.com</a> is a Web service that&#8217;s more comparable to Mint.com, but it incorporates social-networking tools like introducing users with like interests.</p>
<p>Mint was created for 20-somethings like me who want to pay more attention to their finances but aren&#8217;t interested in taking hours each week to do so. This Web site worked ideally for me, and its clean interface integrates Web 2.0 features in a way that makes it a pleasure to use. I think it will appeal to a broad range of people who want to feel more in control of their money, but don&#8217;t want to spend a lot of time updating their information.</p>
<p>I set up my information on Mint in minutes, not hours, and used it to track five accounts. In seconds, Mint used data from my accounts to automatically generate colorful pie charts that illustrated where my money was spent &#8212; and most expenses were accurately labeled. I was pleased to find my local bank in a list of Mint-supported companies. And the site even encouraged me to look at my 401(k)&#8217;s progress online for the first time in a while because I didn&#8217;t need to dig into an out-of-the-way, unfamiliar Web site.</p>
<p>Security is important for a site like Mint.com, so it teamed up with online banking-service provider Yodlee to make secure connections to banks. This involves using encryption that the company claims is the same as what banks use. Mint also says that because it requires nothing more than an email address, password and ZIP Code from each person, registration is anonymous. And the company claims that it never sees or stores password information, nor does it ever see account numbers.</p>
<p>When setting up an account, Mint acknowledges nicknames for companies, like Amex for American Express (AXP), making it easy to find specific banks and credit-card companies. If you&#8217;d like to sign up on Mint, but don&#8217;t already have online accounts set up, Mint will give step-by-step directions on how to do this &#8212; whether via a company&#8217;s site or by phone.</p>
<p>The site suggests alternative companies that will save you more money than those you&#8217;re currently using. Some, but not all, of these companies are sponsors of the site. After entering my savings-account information, I learned about a high-yield savings account that would potentially allow me to earn hundreds more in interest each year. Some of these suggested alternatives were familiar, while others &#8212; like Bank of the Internet USA &#8212; weren&#8217;t.</p>
<p>I found Mint&#8217;s automatic alerts to be especially helpful. Each alert can be personalized to notify you via email or an SMS message on your mobile phone when something happens in an account. Account summaries, for example, can be sent via email and text message every Friday, the first of every month or never. Alerts can be adjusted to tell people that their credit-card bill is due within a certain number of days; if a pre-set budget is exceeded; or if a bank charges extra fees.</p>
<p>Mint&#8217;s new Investments section showed me details about two investments. A handy graph showed the status of my account earnings and compared them with the Dow Jones Industrial Average, Nasdaq and the S&amp;P 500. Individual stocks can be added into your account, though I could see only the balance of a trust holding one of my stocks.</p>
<p>In the Trends section, I learned what my most frequent expenditures were, as well as the total amount of money spent per month, which was interesting to see since I don&#8217;t usually add up all of my expenses. Trends can show you how your spending stacks up with everyone else &#8212; that is, people in the U.S. who use Mint. My account showed I ate at a Chipotle (CMG) chain restaurant once in February and once in April, spending the exact amount each time. (I like their barbacoa fajita burrito.) But I spent about $4 to $5 less than the average Chipotle customer.</p>
<p>If certain expenses are mislabeled, they can easily be renamed and reassigned to different categories. Pie charts and graphs can be altered with one mouse click to become more or less specific, and budgets can be set after looking at spending history on an easy-to-understand bar graph.</p>
<p>Digital conveniences like online bill payments and Web transactions can lead to people putting less thought into their finances. But the value of knowing specifically where money is and how it is spent is a tool that will likely encourage better financial planning and habits. I only wish Mint had a way to incorporate online bill payments so I could do all of my financial work in one place on this site. Otherwise, Mint is a real boon to people who want to tell their dads that they&#8217;re on top of their finances &#8212; and mean it.</p>

<p>On a chilly day, most folks find it tough to open the front door to retrieve the newspaper &#8212; much less climb a 15,000-foot mountain. But plenty of people court danger by rappelling down canyons and camping in remote woodlands. This week, I tested a device that will give thrill seekers a little extra insurance: It lets the folks back home track their progress, and learn when they&#8217;re OK or when they&#8217;re in trouble.</p>
<p>When activated, the $170 SPOT Satellite Messenger from SPOT Inc., the Milpitas, Calif., unit of <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=GSAT'>Globalstar</a> Inc., emits a signal to GPS satellites, which notify SPOT&#8217;s messaging service. The service then sends a message to friends, family or emergency rescue teams about your current status. Because it uses GPS technology, the SPOT will work even when you&#8217;re far from cellphone signal range and anywhere in the world.</p>
<p>I tested SPOT in my Washington, D.C., neighborhood (city parks still count as outdoorsy) and on a trip across the California desert and mountains on the way to a conference &#8212; though I was scaling mountains in an air-conditioned SUV rather than in a rock-climbing harness.</p>

<p>In my tests, SPOT worked without a problem. Notifications from the device were delivered to my friends via email and text message and included my current latitude and longitude. The service also sent along canned messages that I set up in advance on the company&#8217;s Web site at <a href="http://www.findmespot.com" rel="external">www.findmespot.com</a> and hyperlinks to Google Maps that showed my location.</p>
<p>SPOT charges a $100 annual service fee, which includes an unlimited number of messages that can be sent out from your device using three buttons: OK/Check, Help and 911. An additional $50 per year tracking service called SPOTcasting follows and marks your exact location every 10 minutes for 24 hours each time it&#8217;s initiated.</p>
<p>This simple and straightforward device could really help in a dangerous situation. And the company takes its job seriously: A steely message on the SPOT packaging reads, &#8220;Opening this box is the first step in making sure you don&#8217;t come home in one.&#8221; But SPOT could also save the day in less-adventurous situations, such as when your car dies and you&#8217;re out of cellphone range.</p>
<p>However, SPOT isn&#8217;t perfect. While its three message-sending buttons make it easy to use, they also limit the types of messages it can send. There&#8217;s no keyboard, so messages must be brief and set up in advance on the Web site. And the device only sends messages and can&#8217;t receive them. Your friends and family have no way of getting back in touch with you on SPOT should you send a Help message from beyond cellphone range.</p>
<p>SPOT is a bright orange device with roughly the same surface measurement as a BlackBerry, though it&#8217;s considerably thicker. Its durable casing makes it waterproof and floatable, along with working in extremes like -40 degrees Fahrenheit and up to 21,000 feet above sea level. It runs on two AA lithium batteries, which last for different amounts of time according to the type of message being sent.</p>
<p>Setting up SPOT took only a few minutes on the Web site. A default or personalized message can be set up to go out with OK/Check and Help notifications, and email addresses and cellphone numbers (for SMS text messages) can be entered online as the destinations for these messages. Every message includes the user&#8217;s current location in terms of latitude and longitude, along with a hyperlink to access that location via Google Maps.</p>

<p>The OK/Check button can be used most casually by owners of this gadget, as it merely serves to assure others that you&#8217;re fine. A good example might be two people on a three-month sailing trip who use this button as a means of checking in with family every Sunday night.</p>
<p>If OK/Check is held down for five seconds, it initiates the SPOTcasting tracking service (provided you&#8217;ve signed up for it) and locates your device every 10 minutes for a 24-hour period. These tracked points show up on SPOT&#8217;s Web site and are displayed as numbered points on Google Maps.</p>
<p>SPOT worked for me while driving through a regional park with a campsite, where cellphone range was faint, and up into boulder-crusted mountains. Just minutes after pressing Help or OK/Check or initiating tracking, friends received word of my location via emails and text messages.</p>
<p>You can&#8217;t set SPOT to track a trip for longer than 24 hours or at different intervals, such as every hour for a week. And the only way for others to view your tracked points is if they sign in using your online account&#8217;s username and password.</p>
<p>The Help button is used in more urgent situations and uses messages such as &#8220;Urgent help needed. Pick me up at campsite.&#8221; (The default for Help is &#8220;This is a HELP message. Please send for help ASAP.&#8221;) But preset messages shouldn&#8217;t be made too specific during the online setup because they can&#8217;t be changed from the device later.</p>
<p>The 911 and Help automatic notifications will always override less urgent messages like OK/Check or SPOTcasting. In the case of the 911 and Help buttons, one can be pressed after the other and the messages for both will still go out at the same time. The 911 button will send a message every five minutes until power runs out (the company says this will last for up to seven days) or until the message is canceled; Help sends a message every five minutes for an hour or until canceled.</p>
<p>The 911 button is more serious. When pressed, SPOT Inc. automatically notifies a certified 911 company called the GEOS International Emergency Response Center, which contacts your specified emergency contacts first to see if they know anything about your situation before dispatching a rescue squad using your coordinates.</p>
<p>If you can adjust to SPOT&#8217;s three-button approach, the device could be helpful for you or someone you know during outdoor adventures. Many people will buy SPOT simply for its 911 button, as an insurance policy on fluky cellphone service.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Next month Apple Inc. will officially unlock its famed iPhone, allowing outsiders to create software programs for this gadget and the similar iPod touch. But last week the company gave its own software developers another shot before handing over the keys, announcing updates for both the iPhone and iPod touch. These updates outfit each device with a handful of new features, enable more customization and nudge the iPod touch a little closer to the iPhone.</p>
<p>Owners of the $399 iPhone can get a free update, but those with the $299 (8 gigabyte) or $399 (16 gigabyte) iPod touch must pay $20 for their update because Apple tracks revenues differently for iPhones compared with its iPods.</p>

<p>This week, I&#8217;ve been using an iPhone and iPod touch with these updates, and I must say that both devices are much more useful and fun with these improvements. Web clips, or browser bookmarks that take the form of icons on the home screen, give these gadgets a new sense of instant gratification because they direct users to specific Web pages seconds after the device turns on. These little icons can be labeled and moved around, letting you group favorite Web sites on one screen, games on another screen, saved Web research on a third screen and so on.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Getting Synched</h5>
<p>Both devices can be updated by synching with iTunes; the iPhone does so automatically and the iPod touch updates only if the owner buys this upgrade through the iTunes Store. New iPod touches include the updated software free.</p>
<p>New to both devices is a redesigned Maps application that, at the touch of a button, displays a user&#8217;s current location in an on-screen map &#8212; without using Global Positioning Systems. Other non-GPS devices currently do this, but they depend solely on cellphone towers to determine your spot. The iPhone uses both cellphone towers and nearby Wi-Fi hot spots to find your location; the touch uses only the Wi-Fi method.</p>
<p>The iPod touch also now has the same stellar Mail program that is found in the iPhone, a real plus for owners who have been curious about mobile email but weren&#8217;t necessarily ready to plunge into a BlackBerry or iPhone, or don&#8217;t want to pay for a monthly data plan.</p>
<p>Both devices can store numerous Web clips on up to nine different home screens, each of which has room for 16 icons. A handful of permanent applications appear by default on the main home screen, but these can be shuffled around. Along with Maps and Mail, applications for Stocks, Weather and Notes were also added to the iPod touch.</p>
<p>Multi-touch technology only improves these new features. For example, home screens are easily navigated by flicking a finger horizontally to get from one to the next. Holding a finger on any Web clip causes all of them to jiggle like tiny pieces of digital Jell-O, waiting for you to either delete or drag them around wherever you would like them to stay. Pressing the Home key cements the icons in place.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Trouble Finding Home</h5>
<p>But these updates left room for improvement. Maps had trouble on both my iPod touch and iPhone when I asked it to find me in my home in Washington, D.C., and in my office near the White House &#8212; the former test circled a 30-block radius while the latter marked me four blocks away. Tests in other locations worked well, and clever &#8220;Drop Pin&#8221; tools helped me mark and label specific places. But I wouldn&#8217;t rely on this feature if I was completely lost and hoping the iPhone or iPod would tell me where I was.</p>
<p>And though I was excited to have email on my iPod touch, this device lacks a speaker and vibrating capabilities, so it can&#8217;t chime or buzz to signal newly received email. Because of this, the touch wouldn&#8217;t work for me as a serious, everyday tool like the BlackBerry and iPhone.</p>
<p>The free update for the iPhone lets you text message multiple people simultaneously, something the most basic cellphones have been doing for years. But individual responses to these mass texts can&#8217;t be seen in the same thread of conversation as that which you started; instead, they generate new text message threads.</p>
<p>On the iPhone and iPod touch, the Maps application now shows hybrid views that combine satellite maps with labeled street names, which are helpful.</p>
<p>The iPod touch is a testament to what can be done on a mobile device without a cellphone carrier&#8217;s help. By tapping into Wi-Fi hot spots, which are almost everywhere, I easily checked email, stocks and weather. I had a little more trouble using the Maps application with Wi-Fi because I was more often checking my location while on-the-go in a car or walking.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Collecting Web Clips</h5>
<p>I had fun populating the many screens of my iPod touch and iPhone with new Web clips. These are easily added by hitting a &#8220;+&#8221; symbol at the bottom of any Web page, naming the Web clip and watching it appear on a home screen, often with a colorful accompanying icon like that for AllThingsD.com.</p>
<p>Snapshots of a Web page can be captured and saved in a Web clip by zooming in on a certain section of a page and saving that specific view. This proved helpful when I needed to quickly glance at the Georgetown basketball schedule a few times in one day.</p>
<p>Web applications can be found at <a href="http://www.apple.com/webapps" rel="external">www.apple.com/webapps</a>. A game called Ditto involves repeating a pattern on blue, yellow, red and green squares using the touch screen &#8212; a digital version of the Simon handheld game. Memory, the old card game, is updated with animated animals on cards. FlyTunes lets users listen to customizable channels from Internet radio, while an app called Floort presents an opinionated topic and asks people to vote on whether they agree or disagree. Even simple Web apps were useful, such as one that turns the screen into a virtual ruler with inches on one side and centimeters on the other.</p>
<p>But it&#8217;s good to keep in mind that these are Web applications, and are useless without the Web and/or an AT&amp;T connection.</p>
<p>All in all, Apple&#8217;s software updates for the iPhone and iPod touch are exciting, especially because they make home screens much more useful and individualistic. These tiny devices continue to become truly mobile computers.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The cellphones that so many of us carry around in our pockets every day are packed with functionality. They can be used for Web browsing, watching TV, purchasing digital music, gaming, Bluetooth synching, capturing photos and videos, instant messaging and GPS navigation. Oh, and they also make phone calls.</p>
<p>It seems that this last attribute &#8212; the ability to make and receive calls on a cellphone &#8212; is overlooked and underestimated by many manufacturers. But believe it or not, there are plenty of people out there who simply want to use their cellphones for calls, period.</p>
<p>These individuals range from college students who frequently damage or lose their phones to wary, first-time buyers to senior citizens whose kids or grandchildren insist they use a cellphone. About a year ago, GreatCall Inc. introduced its Jitterbug cellphones, which were aimed squarely at the senior set with large keys, a free operator service and the phone&#8217;s own number prominently displayed on a sticker.</p>
<p>It seems that GreatCall was on to something. Verizon Wireless recently followed the company&#8217;s lead by introducing its straightforward, no frills Coupe, a cellphone that offers many of the helpful traits found on Jitterbug phones, like large screen fonts, but without a lot of extras. Verizon simultaneously unveiled two calling plans designed specifically for seniors, and was followed a month later by AT&amp;T and its own monthly plan for those 65 and over. AT&amp;T also has an uncomplicated phone of its own in the works for 2008.</p>
<p>This week I tested Verizon&#8217;s $40 (with a two-year contract) Coupe (<a href="http://www.verizonwireless.com" rel="external">www.verizonwireless.com</a>) against GreatCall&#8217;s $147 Jitterbug Dial (<a href="http://www.jitterbug.com" rel="external">www.jitterbug.com</a>) to see how the two stacked up. I found the Jitterbug more comfortable to use for longer phone calls because of its cushiony earpiece, which blocks out external sound and helps the phone rest easier between your shoulder and ear during conversations. And Jitterbug&#8217;s mantra of simplicity will appeal to cellphone newcomers.</p>
<p>But for those who have been using cellphones and are familiar with the way they work, Jitterbug&#8217;s nonconformist features &#8212; like Yes and No buttons in place of Send and End and the use of a dial tone whenever the clamshell-shaped phone is opened &#8212; can come across as too basic, to the point that they&#8217;re confusing. One example: many standard cellphones redial the last number called when the Send button is pressed twice, but redialing on the Jitterbug requires navigating through five screens to redial the last number.</p>
<p>The Coupe is the smaller of the two and blends in with other cellphones. It includes a few of the extra functions found in normal mobile phones, like an alarm clock, calculator and the capability to send and receive text messages; perhaps most people who buy the Coupe won&#8217;t use it for texting, but it&#8217;s nice to have the built-in option. (The Jitterbug doesn&#8217;t have any of these features.) Right now, this cellphone only comes in shiny black with a blue border around its outside display screen. An included charging cradle adds a touch of convenience.</p>
<p>The Coupe also has some fun features that give it a more personal touch, including a choice of 24 ringtones and 10 wallpaper designs for the main screen&#8217;s background. After seeing low-grade camera lenses on nearly every digital device that I&#8217;ve picked up recently, the Coupe looked a little naked without one.</p>
<p>Three red buttons labeled I, C and E (for In Case of Emergency) are positioned just below the phone&#8217;s screen and can be assigned names and numbers to work as shortcuts to those most often called. A specially marked &#8220;911&#8243; button on the phone&#8217;s keypad is designated specifically for emergencies, though this must be held down to use and, even then, asks if the caller definitely intended to call 911.</p>
<p>A speaker button is also clearly labeled on the Coupe&#8217;s keypad, and pronounced volume adjustment keys line the phone&#8217;s side. On-screen fonts appear larger than those found on regular cellphones.</p>
<p>Verizon&#8217;s well-known network is sure to be a draw for potential buyers, especially because any plan used with the Coupe includes free calls to other Verizon Wireless users. Though any of this carrier&#8217;s plans work with this basic phone, the Nationwide 65 Plus plan made its debut with the Coupe in hopes of appealing to those ages 65 and up. A single-line plan allows 200 anytime minutes and 500 night and weekend minutes for $30 monthly; the two-line plan offers roughly double the minutes (to be shared) for double the price. These plans aren&#8217;t exclusively usable with the Coupe.</p>
<p>GreatCall&#8217;s Jitterbug comes in two $147 models: the Dial, with a numeric keypad and the OneTouch, with just three large buttons labeled Operator, Tow and 911. I&#8217;ve tested both in the past, but this time around I looked at the Dial because it&#8217;s most comparable to Verizon&#8217;s Coupe.</p>
<p>The Jitterbug Dial phone comes in black or white, and its buttons and all of its on-screen lettering appear considerably larger than the Verizon Coupe&#8217;s. Its number keys glow bright white and are encircled by yellow borders, while the Coupe&#8217;s digital keypad is black with glowing blue numbers &#8212; colors that aren&#8217;t as distinctive. Unlike the Coupe, Jitterbug doesn&#8217;t come with a charging cradle, though GreatCall has plans for adding cradles in 2008.</p>
<p>A free operator service can be reached from Jitterbug phones by pressing &#8220;0.&#8221; This operator greets users by name, places calls on the user&#8217;s phone (saving you the trouble of dialing) and can add numbers to a phone&#8217;s contact list if a user doesn&#8217;t want to or can&#8217;t do this.</p>
<p>The Jitterbug can be pre-programmed with names and numbers; I ordered mine with five pre-programmed numbers, a luxury that nervous new cellphone owners might find worthwhile. Things get difficult when you try to enter your contacts. Even though each number key has three or four letters assigned to its key as on all phones, adding a contact involves using Jitterbug&#8217;s clumsy system of choosing one letter at a time from the screen. You&#8217;re better off using the free operator service for this.</p>
<p>Jitterbug phones let users store only 50 contact names and numbers, while Verizon&#8217;s Coupe will store 500. Many first-time cellphone owners will be content with 50, but, again, options are good.</p>
<p>The Jitterbug and Coupe each have small screens on their outer shells that display the time, date and phone numbers of incoming calls. But the Coupe displays its remaining battery power both on this outer screen and inside on its main screen, while the Jitterbug only flashes battery status on the screen if the battery reaches a certain low level, or if you navigate to a special &#8220;Phone Info&#8221; screen.</p>

<p>Behind the scenes, GreatCall&#8217;s Jitterbug phones run using networks set up by other carriers; I never had any trouble dialing out or receiving calls. A variety of calling plans can be used with Jitterbug phones ranging from $10 monthly for pay-as-you-go at 35 cents a minute to $80 monthly for 800 minutes. Add-on packages of minutes and sharing plans are also available.</p>
<p>If you&#8217;re familiar with cellphones, the Jitterbug will be a confusing step back for you, even though its free operator service and comfortable earpiece are pluses. Some people will prefer the Jitterbug&#8217;s larger fonts and number keys to the Verizon Coupe&#8217;s smaller, more stylish build. Still, the Coupe is a good option for people who have at least some familiarity with technology and cellphones. Each in its own way does a good job of sticking to the basic task of handling phone calls.</p>

They enable effortless directory assistance, mobile Web access and the ever-important luxury of calling someone in the next room so you don&#8217;t need to get up. But this laziness can be reversed in an instant: Just misplace your cellphone at home, hear it ring and note how quickly you move &#8212; running, climbing stairs or flipping couch cushions &#8212; to find the phone before a caller hangs up.</p>
<p>VTech Communications wants to put an end to this mad phone dash with its new $150 Expandable Cordless Phone System with Bluetooth, the LS5145. This device synchronizes with your cellphone and redirects incoming cell calls to ring wherever the VTech phones are placed in the house. It works with your landline and up to two Bluetooth-linked cellphones, and can be expanded using additional handsets that cost $80 each.</p>

<p>The concept of a cellphone extender isn&#8217;t new, but not many of them have caught on. Another popular add-on to cellphones at home is the repeater, which focuses on boosting a phone&#8217;s signal in a place with poor coverage. The VTech 5145 could work as a repeater, assuming you put it and the finicky cellphone in a place with good coverage. But if your entire house has lousy cell coverage, it won&#8217;t work as a repeater.</p>
<p><a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=t'>AT&amp;T</a> licenses its corded and cordless phones through VTech, which sells a less-expensive product similar to the 5145 called the AT&amp;T EP5632. It costs $100 and has the same basic functions as the 5145, but is clunky and much less stylish. Its additional handhelds cost $60 each.</p>
<p>This week, I put my feet up and tried the VTech 5145 and one of its accessory handsets, the LS5105. These phones are stylishly thin and have bright color display screens, which can be set to one of 27 still color wallpaper images or four animated designs. It took me only a minute to pair cellphones with the system using Bluetooth, a wireless technology that connects devices that are within about 30 feet of one another. And the VTech&#8217;s primary function &#8212; extending the cellphone throughout a house to make it more convenient to answer &#8212; worked well, ringing much louder than my cellphone.</p>
<p>But the 5145 didn&#8217;t display the numerous names and numbers stored on my cellphone&#8217;s contact list. Unless I wanted to painstakingly enter the data into the VTech, incoming calls were only identified with phone numbers, so I rarely knew who was calling. And I could only call the handful of numbers that I know by heart.</p>
<p>Bluetooth technology isn&#8217;t incapable of transmitting data: My BlackBerry Curve even tried to transfer its contacts to the 5145, but couldn&#8217;t. VTech chose to use headset Bluetooth synchronization on the 5145 rather than hands-free synchronization. Hands-free is the same technology used in most Bluetooth-equipped cars; it provides more access to the Bluetooth device, such as phone-book integration.</p>
<p>I also missed other features on my cellphone when it wasn&#8217;t by my side, such as text messaging and voice mail. Incoming text messages were sent to my cellphone unbeknownst to me since I wasn&#8217;t near it, and when I didn&#8217;t answer incoming calls through the VTech, I had no way of knowing if the caller left a voice mail on my cellphone.</p>
<p>The 5145 includes a base station and primary phone; the 5105 additional handset includes a small stand just big enough to hold it upright. I set up the base station near where I drop my work bag after coming home each night. After the initial pairing during setup, phones automatically link to the VTech, meaning I never had to take my cellphone out of my bag.</p>
<p>I paired the 5145 with two phones at once: a Motorola Razr using Verizon and a BlackBerry Curve with AT&amp;T service. I also tested pairing a third phone with the system, the HTC Pocket PC 6800 from Sprint, though only two cellphones can be paired simultaneously. Just one of the Bluetooth phones can be used at a time, in addition to the landline. As long as the two paired phones stayed within about 30 feet of the base station, they automatically started routing calls through the VTech.</p>
<p>Call waiting worked like using my actual cellphone, except I pressed different buttons on the 5145 to &#8220;swap&#8221; calls. If you&#8217;re chatting on a landline call, you can answer an incoming cellphone call by placing the landline call on hold. If each line &#8212; landline and cellular &#8212; has call waiting, a total of four callers could potentially be linked to the VTech system at once.</p>
<p>In my house, we gave up our landline years ago, so I tested the system using only cellphones. I saved myself a few trips racing up and down the stairs to find where I had left my cellphone, instead placing the base station on one floor and the additional handset on the other. Using cordless phones for the first time in years reminded me of the issues that accompany this system. The line became fuzzy when I moved too far away from a phone&#8217;s base station, though VTech says a connection can stay clear for up to about 900 feet.</p>
<p>I almost forgot that cordless phones can&#8217;t be taken out of the house. While on a phone call, I had to stop myself from heading out the front door and continuing my chat as I walked to the corner store. Cellular calls that are in progress on VTech handsets can be continued on the cell by adjusting a setting on the cellphone, or by walking far enough away from the base station to receive a cellphone prompt to disconnect from the system.</p>
<p>I made calls from the handsets by first choosing which of the paired cellphones to use. My calls were received by friends and family just as if I was calling on my cellphone, though a couple of people told me that the connection didn&#8217;t sound quite as good.</p>
<p>Each handset is equipped with a speakerphone, and missed calls are noted on the color screen and in a call log, along with the date and time. A built-in intercom system lets handsets communicate with the other or the base station. Users can choose from one of 23 ringtone-like melodies; I chose a steel drum tune for one handset.</p>
<p>If you&#8217;re looking for an easier way to answer your cellphone whenever and wherever it rings, VTech&#8217;s system might be a good solution for you. But if you rely on your cellphone&#8217;s address book to identify callers and aren&#8217;t up for inputting these data again, it might be worth waiting for a Bluetooth cordless phone system that will automatically copy data from your cellphone.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>A number of my friends, ranging in age from mid-20s to early 30s, are in no rush to abandon their basic cellphones for smart phones like BlackBerrys or Treos. It&#8217;s not for lack of technological skill; these people are constantly text messaging and emailing, and spend a huge amount of time online every day. But they&#8217;d rather not carry a large, geeky-looking device. Nor do they want to pay a lot for this device and its monthly plan. Some of them even assume that smart phones work only with corporate email accounts.</p>

<p>The two companies most often associated with corporate-issued devices, <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=rimm'>Research In Motion</a> Ltd. and <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=palm'>Palm</a> Inc. are anxious to convert people like my friends. This week I tested Palm&#8217;s new attempt: the Centro (<a href="http://www.palm.com/centro" rel="external">www.palm.com/centro</a>). It looks like a hip, miniature version of the more expensive Palm Treo, with most of the same functions and only costs $99 after rebates and a two-year contract. The Centro comes in onyx and ruby, though the latter won&#8217;t be sold until next month.</p>
<p>Overall, I liked the Centro. It has plenty of pluses, including a touch screen, easy email set-up for personal accounts like Gmail and Hotmail, built-in instant messaging for three programs, a camera for still shots or video and expandable memory. It&#8217;s available now and runs on Sprint&#8217;s fast 3G network, costing at least $15 monthly for data on top of your voice plan. Like the Treo, it has a tiny stylus for detailed screen selecting and an on/off ringer switch.</p>
<p>RIM should be credited with introducing one of the first hip, mini smart phones to the demographic of 25-to-30-year-olds without smart phones. About a year ago, it brought out the $200 BlackBerry Pearl 8100, which is narrower than traditional BlackBerrys and is easy to mistake for a stylish cellphone. It uses a condensed keyboard with two letters per key that works using auto-correcting SureType technology, and has a glowing trackball for navigation.</p>
<p>For Palm&#8217;s Centro to compete with the Pearl, it, too, needed to be thinner left to right. But instead of doubling up letters per key and using SureType like the Pearl, the Centro has a shrunken version of Palm&#8217;s full keyboard; letter keys are squeezed so close together that large-fingered users will likely have trouble. I found the Pearl&#8217;s keyboard easier to use because its keys are flatter and larger compared with the Centro keys, which caused me to mistype messages. But the Centro&#8217;s tiny keyboard could be a real step up for people who still use their cellphone&#8217;s numbered keypad to type text messages.</p>
<p>The Centro&#8217;s touch screen saves time and makes navigation easier. The BlackBerry Pearl doesn&#8217;t have a touch screen, forcing users to do a lot of scrolling with the navigational trackball.</p>
<p>A success with the Centro would be much needed good news for Palm, which hasn&#8217;t had an easy go of it lately. While RIM has been cranking out more stylish BlackBerrys, Palm&#8217;s solid Treo hasn&#8217;t changed all that drastically in the past couple of years. Even loyal Treo users are starting to complain about Palm&#8217;s old operating system crashing. Of course, the popularity of <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=aapl'>Apple</a> Inc.&#8217;s iPhone only rubs salt in the wounds of this once unstoppable company.</p>
<p>RIM will bring out a new Pearl, the 8130, next month to step up its game. This Pearl will be the same physically, but will have some internal changes, including the ability to work on the CDMA network, built-in GPS and upgraded software.</p>
<p>I tested a stylish ruby Centro and also got my hands on an early version of the BlackBerry Pearl 8130 from Verizon Wireless. Lined up side by side, the Palm Centro looks like a chubby version of the Pearl. The Pearl looks and feels sleeker and sharper than the Centro, due in part to the Centro&#8217;s rounded edges and tiny, bubble-shaped keys.</p>
<p>The Pearl is just a hair smaller in all directions &#8212; width, height and depth. The Centro is almost a full ounce heavier than the Pearl, but each weighs only 4.2 and 3.4 ounces, respectively. The Centro&#8217;s 320&#215;320 resolution screen looks brighter than the Pearl&#8217;s 240&#215;260 screen.</p>
<p>I focused on the Centro, setting up two personal email accounts on it in just a few minutes. I started out typing very slowly on the keyboard, which has keys made of a slightly sticky material. The more familiar I became with it, the faster I could go, but I&#8217;m still not completely comfortable using the keyboard.</p>
<p>I quickly navigated through the Centro&#8217;s menus using Palm&#8217;s familiar operating system. The touch screen saved me from arrowing around to select an icon or menu; I just tapped the screen using my finger or the stylus. First-time smart-phone users will appreciate this aspect.</p>
<p>I made calls on the Centro, pressing the phone shortcut key to get started. The keyboard&#8217;s number keys work just as they do on a Treo, but I preferred using the larger virtual buttons on the touch screen. The Centro felt like a normal cellphone in my hand and against my ear, especially compared with the clunky, rectangular Treos and BlackBerrys. The tiny Centro fit into the smallest purse I own.</p>
<p>An icon on the home screen marked &#8220;IM&#8221; linked me directly into a screen where I could log in to and use three instant-messaging programs simultaneously: AOL&#8217;s AIM, Yahoo Messenger and Windows Live Messenger. I jumped between IM sessions using the left and right navigation key buttons. But a faster way to do this was just by touching the screen to select a program. I also tapped the screen to select names of friends before IMing them. Again, the touch screen saved time and took out the guesswork of which key to press to navigate.</p>
<p>I played preloaded music on the Centro and BlackBerry Pearl; both have built-in speakers that sound remarkably good for such little devices.</p>
<p>Battery life on the Centro is estimated at 3.5 hours of talk time and up to 12.5 days of standby time. The Pearl 8130&#8217;s talk time is expected to fetch 3.8 hours before quitting, but its standby battery is expected to last only nine days. I didn&#8217;t perform rigorous battery tests, but found that my BlackBerry Pearl needed to be charged before my Palm Centro after a weekend of using them for roughly the same amount of time.</p>
<p>The BlackBerry Pearl 8130 comes with only RIM&#8217;s BlackBerry Messenger program. Both the Pearl and Centro have 64 megabytes of internal memory and the ability to expand that using microSD cards.</p>
<p>If you&#8217;re considering the leap from a cellphone to a smart phone but don&#8217;t want the bigger, geekier look of one of these helpful devices, the Palm Centro is a good option. Its keyboard will take some getting used to, but its touch screen will win you over by providing a simpler way to navigate &#8212; especially for smart-phone novices.</p>
