			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Web browsing and email have comfortably migrated to mobile handhelds like the iPhone, BlackBerry and Palm (PALM) Pre. But many of these gadgets still cost a lot compared with cellphones that come free with renewed two-year contracts. </p>
<p>This week, I tested a new BlackBerry that costs less than any other BlackBerry did at launch—that is, if you buy it at the right place. Research in Motion&#8217;s (RIMM) BlackBerry Curve 8520 costs just $49 at Wal-Mart (WMT)—or $130 if you buy it at T-Mobile. Both prices are with two-year T-Mobile contracts.</p>

<p>The BlackBerry Curve has been one of the company&#8217;s most popular models. All iterations of the Curve combine a full QWERTY keyboard with a sleeker, more stylish look than bigger BlackBerry models like the Bold. And Curves typically cost less than their larger counterparts. In February, RIM refreshed its Curve brand for the first time in over two years with the 8900. This model was a real upgrade for Curve users, thanks to a brighter screen, faster performance and flatter keys that were easier to press. But six months later, it still costs as much as $199 (after rebate)—a steep asking price considering how some older 8300-series Curves are offered for around $50 with two-year contracts.</p>
<p>This newest $49 Curve 8520 lowers that price barrier. Its monthly T-Mobile service plans are also relatively inexpensive, starting at $55 for voice and data (not including MMS or SMS messaging). </p>
<p>It has two features never before seen on a BlackBerry. First, in place of a trackball or scroll wheel, this Curve uses a trackpad—a mini version of those used for mouse navigation on laptops.  </p>
<p>Second, it has designated physical buttons for playing, pausing and skipping ahead or back within media like videos and music. These rubbery buttons are built into the top edge of the BlackBerry.</p>
<p>I like the look of the Curve 8520—especially how the surface covering its screen extends down to the trackpad and its four surrounding buttons, giving it a smooth facade. It comes in two colors, black and frost (I used the black). Its low price, alone, will be enough to draw customers.  </p>
<p>But something about the way its keyboard and navigational keys worked felt cheap. Letter keys felt light and hollow while the Send, Menu, Escape and End keys around the trackpad clicked as I touched them.</p>
<p>The specifications of this BlackBerry tell the tale more specifically. Its 320&#215;240 pixel screen looks faded next to that of the Curve 8900, which is 480&#215;360. The blinking red indicator light at the top front corner of all BlackBerrys is a barely noticeable dot on this device. </p>
<p>And its camera is only two megapixels, not 3.2 megapixels like on the 8900, and is the first on a BlackBerry not to have a built-in flash. Also, it doesn&#8217;t run on the fast 3G network, though it uses Wi-Fi and automatically connects to trusted networks when in range of them. </p>
<p>First-time smartphone owners may not notice or care about these small details, but veteran BlackBerry users will pick up on them right away.</p>
<p>The Curve 8520 incorporates useful physical features found on previous models like right- and left-side convenience keys that work as handy shortcuts. It comes with a 1-gigabyte microSD memory card so users don&#8217;t have to buy their own before loading this device with photos, music and videos. </p>
<p>A strip of rubber runs around the Curve&#8217;s edge, covering up and smoothing over its convenience keys and volume buttons. This rugged addition isn&#8217;t visible from the front of the BlackBerry and it will probably go a long way in preventing nicks and dings. The word &#8220;Curve&#8221; is imprinted on the back of the BlackBerry, proudly branding this model.</p>
<p>The navigational trackpad is a cinch to use and moves the cursor up, down, right and left with very little effort. To select, one needs only to press in on the trackpad just as with the  trackball. Unlike the trackball, which rolls in place and can get stuck once in a great while, the trackpad doesn&#8217;t have any moving parts.</p>
<p>The physical media keys on the Curve 8520&#8217;s top edge work to instantly start playing media from any screen, like a music video that I watched. If you were to use your BlackBerry as your sole portable media player, these would be more valuable. And their position on the top of the Curve makes them easy to reach if the device is in a pocket or purse. </p>
<p>In my everyday usage scenarios, I usually forgot about these shortcut buttons and just used the trackpad to find and select a track or video for playing.  </p>
<p>BlackBerry&#8217;s App World store for applications that users can load onto the device still only offers 2,000 apps, compared to Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) 65,000. This means that for now, this new Curve can&#8217;t be enhanced with as many outside programs, which is a real downside.  And if you do download a lot of apps, or music or videos or photos, you may have to get a bigger memory card.</p>
<p>The Curve 8520 isn&#8217;t made for BlackBerry fanatics. But it&#8217;s a good entry-level BlackBerry for users who still haven&#8217;t let go of their basic cellphones. At Wal-Mart&#8217;s $49 price, it&#8217;s hard to beat.  </p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>As the saying goes, you never get a second chance to make a first impression. But it never hurts to try. This week, I tested the T-Mobile myTouch 3G with Google (GOOG), which is the company’s second chance at introducing a “Google phone” to the masses.</p>
<p>Google’s first device, called the T-Mobile G1, came out in October and was less than a sensation. The phone had a touch screen and a handy slide-out physical keyboard, but it was bulky and unattractive. It came with just one gigabyte of memory and lacked important features like compatibility with Microsoft Exchange for use with work email. Its app store, called the Android Market, offered only about 50 applications. The G1 launched with surprisingly few accessories.</p>

<p>The $200 (with two-year contract) T-Mobile myTouch 3G (t-mobilemytouch.com) available Aug. 5, has fixed many of these problems. Its new design uses an on-screen keyboard, which gives it a thinner, more stylish build that feels great in the hand. It now comes with four gigabytes of memory, works with Microsoft Exchange and can record and play back video footage. The Android Market has increased its number of apps to about 6,300, and the myTouch will hit stores with accessories like designer shells and docking stations. Its combined voice and data plans are at least $25 less per month than what AT&#038;T’s (T) plans cost for users of Apple’s competing iPhone.</p>
<p>But while using it, I couldn’t help thinking that the myTouch felt less like a new device and more like what the G1 should have been in the first place.</p>
<p>The myTouch, which is built by HTC of Taiwan, runs on an improved version of Google’s operating system, that performs tasks faster has a more streamlined look and supports stereo Bluetooth connections. But it carries on many traits of its predecessor. It still synchronizes over the air with Google account information including email, calendar and contacts. Swiping a finger to the left or right on the myTouch’s home screen will still open other screens, with space for icons representing apps. And its handy window-shade-like Notifications menu can still be pulled down onto the screen at any time to show a list of new messages.</p>
<p>The most dramatic difference on the myTouch is its on-screen keyboard, which may frustrate some people who liked the G1 for its because it had a physical keyboard and a touch screen. Like on Apple’s (AAPL) iPhone, the myTouch keyboard corrects words as you type, recognizing you’ll make more mistakes on it than you would on a physical keyboard. The keyboard suggests words in a horizontal bar that appears above the keyboard and below the text area. You need only type “Washi” and the word “Washington” appears in this bar for you to select. These shortcuts speed up the otherwise frustrating process of on-screen typing.</p>
<p>Unlike on the iPhone, the myTouch keyboard’s keys don’t get larger as your finger hovers over them so as to help you touch the right key. Nor does a word become magnified when you’re trying to place the cursor at a certain spot. The myTouch’s trackball can be used to pinpoint a specific letter but I usually forgot all about the trackball, opting to use the responsive touch screen for navigation.</p>
<p>T-Mobile offers much less expensive monthly plans for the myTouch than AT&#038;T offers for the iPhone. The cheapest voice and data plan from T-Mobile costs $55 compared with AT&#038;T’s $70. Unlimited data and messaging plus minimum voice plans total $65 for T-Mobile and $90 for AT&#038;T. And AT&#038;T’s messaging is currently limited to text, while T-Mobile messaging includes text, picture and video.</p>
<p>On the other hand, T-Mobile offers 3G coverage in far fewer cities than AT&#038;T. The myTouch comes with only a fourth of the built-in memory of the same-priced the 3GS iPhone, and half the memory of the 3G iPhone model, which is costs half the price. And myTouch offers only about a tenth of the apps the iPhone offers, and has a smaller screen.</p>

<p>T-Mobile wants myTouch users to understand apps and download them, starting with the AppPack: a package of eight to 10 apps that T-Mobile will send to myTouch customers via an SMS with a link. Customers can peruse this list of apps and download just the ones they choose. While some people may not appreciate receiving apps suggestions, it could also introduce apps to people who didn’t know how they worked.</p>
<p>The Android Market, where all apps for Google’s phones can be found and purchased,still isn’t as well organized as it should be. It separates games from other applications and organizes them by popularity and date, but doesn’t separate those that are free and those that must be bought. I downloaded several free apps including WordGame, Facebook, Twitter, Sketch-a-Etch and Sherpa. But I was especially irked by the way some of the apps I downloaded kept trying to get me to download additional apps every time I opened them. The Twitter app, which was listed as one of the most popular, displayed prompts to download browsers and RSS readers—even six days after I first used the app. An on-screen message gave me the option to “Ignore Forever,” but this apparently didn’t include prompts to download other programs. Any user would be confused and irritated by these unsolicited messages. Google said that was what the developer chose to do—a major downside to the Android’s open model.</p>
<p>The myTouch’s 3.2-megapixel camera and video camera worked well and started up quickly. An icon labeled Gallery neatly holds still images and videos. And the myTouch has simple ways to upload photos to Picasa or videos to YouTube.</p>
<p>A built-in tool for Google Web searches using voice commands worked remarkably well, even when I tried to trip it up by saying four words at once. It didn’t recognize my last name, but I’ll let it off the hook since it’s spelled differently than it sounds.</p>
<p>The T-Mobile myTouch 3G costs $50 more than the G1, but its extra features are worthwhile. Be ready for a frustrating first-time experience with the on-screen keyboard and try to read user comments in the Android Market to figure out which apps prompt you to download additional programs. </p>
<p>The myTouch is what we expected from Google the first time around. Time will tell if people are ready to give it a second chance.</p>

She compared the techie conversations that were going on around her with people speaking in a different language. And she isn&#8217;t alone.</p>
<p>Though it isn&#8217;t always obvious, the technology industry sees senior citizens as a target demographic &#8212; especially where cellphones are concerned. Mobile phones could act as valuable lifelines in health-related situations and, at the very least, provide an easier way for relatives to keep in touch. Major cellphone carriers offer models that they say are easier for seniors to use thanks to big buttons and large screen fonts. But some companies go a step further. GreatCall Inc., for example, designed its Jitterbug cellphone specifically to appeal to non-techies, including &#8212; but not limited to &#8212; senior citizens. It shirks phone extras like Internet access for simplicity and includes a concierge service that does things like remotely adding numbers to the phone so users don&#8217;t have to do it.</p>

<p>This week, I took a look at a cellphone that was designed specifically for senior citizens: the ClarityLife C900. It&#8217;s the first cellphone from Clarity (<a href="http://www.clarityproducts.com" rel="external">clarityproducts.com</a>), a division of <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=plt'>Plantronics</a> Inc. (PLT) that specializes in telephony (landlines and other products) for people with hearing loss. The cellphone incorporates features that are useful for someone who may be hard of hearing or using a hearing aid.</p>
<p>The C900 is a bulky slider phone with a top half that slides up, revealing a number keypad below; number keys each measure a half-inch square. This might be a deterrent for seniors who want their phone to look hip or slip easily into a pocket. But Clarity says the phone&#8217;s deliberately large size makes it easier to hold and use, and accommodates a roomy 2.5-inch screen.</p>
<p>I found the C900 relatively easy to navigate with sensible on-screen commands, though there were a few times when I couldn&#8217;t back out of a screen and had to close the slider to start over. Friends&#8217; voices sounded loud and full when heard through this cellphone, though it lacks a speakerphone, which my grandparents could use for calling relatives and singing &#8220;Happy Birthday&#8221; together.</p>

<p>The C900 costs $270 &#8212; a steep price because it&#8217;s &#8220;unlocked,&#8221; or not tied to any one carrier, but according to Clarity&#8217;s research, senior citizens don&#8217;t like to get into long-term contracts like two-year deals. This unlocked model will work on any GSM network, like T-Mobile or AT&#038;T (T), but buyers must take the phone to a carrier&#8217;s store to get it set up and working. The phone also could be added as one of the lines in an existing family plan.</p>
<p>People who would rather save money than avoid contracts can get the ClarityLife for $185 tied into a one-year service deal with T-Mobile. These monthly service prices range from $19 pay-as-you-go (20 cents a minute) to $99 for unlimited calling.</p>
<p>The hearing-related features on this cellphone include a 20-decibel speaker and a way to notify people of incoming calls using simultaneous ringing, vibrating and a flashing green light. All the buttons on the device make loud noises, including those that control volume. The C900 is also hearing-aid-compliant, meaning it won&#8217;t cause static interference when held up to an ear with a hearing aid.</p>
<p>The C900 has a large, red button on its back side that, when enabled and pressed, automatically calls and/or sends text messages to a list of five emergency contacts until it reaches someone. These contacts are notified via an automatic dialing system and must press &#8220;0&#8243; when they answer to accept the emergency call so the system knows that a real person picked up, instead of a voicemail or answering machine. Five postcards with instructions come with this phone, and can be mailed to emergency contacts so they know what to do if they receive an emergency call from the C900 phone. Users could potentially add &#8220;911&#8243; to their list of emergency callers.</p>
<p>Most people will likely use the C900 in its closed slider position, revealing just four buttons at a time. These oversized buttons can scroll through contacts, call friends and end calls. A feature called &#8220;Top 10&#8243; lets users add their 10 most frequently called numbers in the order they prefer, which is a refreshing change from the alphabetical listing that most phones use.</p>
<p>The C900 accepts and sends SMS, or text messages, and comes loaded with nine canned text messages including the ominous, &#8220;I don&#8217;t have much time.&#8221; An extremely loud chime sounds when messages are received or sent.</p>
<p>Other helpful features include a hard button on the phone&#8217;s top edge that opens an alarm-clock function, and a button for an ultra-bright, built-in flashlight. This could come in handy, though it must be held down to stay on.</p>
<p>Clarity says that the C900&#8217;s battery life lasts for three hours of talk time or 150 hours in standby, and that it takes one hour to fully charge after the phone&#8217;s first-time-use four-hour charge. I left my fully charged C900 powered off for a couple weeks and it still had a full charge when I turned it back on again. This could be really helpful for people who forget to charge their phone, but want to grab it to take along on a trip.</p>
<p>A phonebook entry titled &#8220;Customer Care&#8221; comes preprogrammed on all ClarityLife C900s. This number is answered by Clarity&#8217;s customer-service team, people who are trained to consider a caller&#8217;s specific issues, such as hearing or memory loss. The representatives speak slowly, avoid tech jargon, and can use an amplifier to make their voices louder and easier to hear.</p>
<p>The ClarityLife C900 is expensive, but this phone&#8217;s hearing-targeted features will be appreciated by many seniors, as will its oversized buttons and easy-to-hold size and shape.</p>

In the past two months a bunch of my friends, ranging in age from early 20s to late 30s, have asked me about Twitter &#8212; or Tweeter, as one person accidentally called it.</p>
<p>To clear things up, I&#8217;ve put together a basic Twitter guide that explains how to use it, Twitter lingo, privacy options, mobile applications that can be used with the service and problems that it has. Let&#8217;s get started.</p>

The service is surprisingly useful, but leaves room for improvement.</div>
<p><strong>What is it?</strong> In short, Twitter is a free social-networking tool that keeps people connected with one another and with sources of information. Twitter users submit updates about whatever they&#8217;re currently doing, and these updates cannot exceed 140 text-based characters.</p>
<p><strong>Lingo:</strong> Twitter is the name of the service. The term twittering describes the activity of updating a Twitter account. A tweet is an individual Twitter update. Twitterers are people who use the service.</p>
<p><strong>Followers, not Friends:</strong> Social-networking sites like Facebook and MySpace use the term &#8220;friend&#8221; to refer to people who are connected with one another, but Twitterers can simply follow one another&#8217;s messages by finding a person&#8217;s username and selecting a &#8220;Follow&#8221; option. This alerts the person that you&#8217;re following them, and they can reciprocally choose to follow you, or not.</p>
<p><strong>Why use it?</strong> While some people primarily use Twitter to post updates about their activities or comments on the news, I use the service more as a follower, allowing me to see quick snippets of news as it occurs. Most tweets are written by real people, while others, such as updates from news organizations that you&#8217;ve selected, are automatically generated. Many tweets include the addresses of Web sites with relevant articles that tell readers more on a topic.</p>
<p><strong>Where is it?</strong> Twitter works on your Web browser at Twitter.com, where user updates appear in a simple list form as they are submitted. After you&#8217;ve signed up and started following other people, those people&#8217;s updates, or tweets, will appear when you log onto Twitter.com using a username and password.</p>
<p>Twitter also works on mobile phones, where the 140-character limit allows messages to be sent and received via SMS text messaging. Tweets can also be sent and received via email. Users with smartphones like BlackBerrys or iPhones can use one of the many popular mobile applications for accessing Twitter, which offer much richer options than simple SMS does; I&#8217;ll get into these later.</p>
<p><strong>Privacy:</strong> Unlike other social-networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter isn&#8217;t focused on holding and sharing personal information about its members. Indeed, the service operates with a majority (80%, according to the company) of users opting to keep their updates public, that is, follow-able by anyone, without permission. This openness encourages people to follow one another or to see who others are already following, and then follow the same people.</p>
<p>However, users can opt to protect their updates, meaning they must grant permission for others to follow them. If you&#8217;d like to sign up for Twitter, but aren&#8217;t comfortable putting your first and/or last name on the site, you don&#8217;t have to; instead, just tell others your username.</p>
<p><strong>Twitter Page Personalization:</strong> Each user has a Twitter page showing all of his or her updates, or tweets. (Mine is twitter.com/kabster728, and you can follow me.) This page also shows the number of people a user follows, how many people follow her and how many total updates she has posted.</p>
<p>Twitterers can customize their Twitter page by uploading a photo to be used as the background. The icon representing each user can also be personalized, and this is important because it appears beside that person&#8217;s tweets on Twitter.com, where followers recognize and appreciate its familiarity. Some people, including me, use pictures of themselves as their icons, while others use random shots.</p>
<p><strong>Apps/Clients:</strong> Twitter works on any browser, and will also work on a mobile browser. If you have a mobile device like the BlackBerry or iPhone, you can jazz up the experience by downloading a third-party app like TwitterFon, TwitterBerry, Tweetie or Twitteriffic. Twittervision, another mobile app, plots points on maps to show where tweets originated. Desktop clients also abound, including Twhirl and TweetDeck. Twitterfeed will set your blog to automatically post content to Twitter.</p>
<p><strong>@Replies, Direct Messages:</strong> Each tweet that appears in your Twitter feed can be replied to using a shortcut arrow that appears beside the tweet, and these responses to tweets are called @Replies. So if JoeSchmo tweets to say he saw the new James Bond movie and hated it, you can reply to this with a tweet of your own that says, &#8220;@JoeSchmo I still adore Daniel Craig.&#8221; These @Replies appear for everyone to see, and must start with @ plus the username of whomever you&#8217;re responding to.</p>
<p>Direct Messages differ from @Replies because they can be sent only between people who are following one another. These messages aren&#8217;t posted publicly. They appear on your Twitter.com page in a right-side section labeled Direct Messages and will also be sent to your mobile device if you have one registered with Twitter.</p>
<p><strong>Favorites:</strong> If you read a tweet that you really like, you can save it as a favorite by selecting a small star beside the tweet, thus adding it to a Favorites section on your homepage. Anyone can see anyone else&#8217;s Favorites, regardless of whether or not they&#8217;re following one another.</p>
<p><strong>Problems:</strong> Twitter&#8217;s bare-bones approach gets to the point quickly, displaying tweets in a simple, quick-read format. But the site is lacking in many areas. It used to enable searching for people on Twitter, but that capability is currently down. Now, to search for friends on Twitter, you must upload your email contacts from a Web-based mail service. The company says it plans to have people-search working again by the end of the year. Meanwhile, search.twitter.com enables keyword or location searches.</p>
<p>Twitter lacks the ability to sort tweets according to what the user wants. If I just want to see tweets from real people and not those that are automatically generated, I&#8217;m out of luck. Same goes if I want to keep certain friends&#8217; tweets in a prominent place on my homepage; Twitter has no way of doing this.</p>
<p>Twitter users aren&#8217;t notified when someone responds to their tweet with an @Reply. I recently happened to look at @Replies on my Twitter homepage and found three from people who follow me (I don&#8217;t follow them).</p>
<p>If you&#8217;re adding a Web address to a tweet and the characters in the URL take up too much space, Twitter will automatically use TinyURL behind the scenes to shrink your long link into a shorter one when you post your tweet. But this works only if you have enough remaining characters in your tweet to fit the long version of your link. A built-in TinyURL converter on the page would help immensely.</p>
<p>Twitter says it&#8217;s working to make @Replies more effective. It also says it plans to do more with filtering and sorting, so that the Twitter interface is more useful. In the meantime, Twitter does a good job of giving people simplified news about others and the world around them. If you&#8217;re often in a rush, Twitter can be a great resource for fast information.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Smartphones are masters of multitasking. They email, browse the Web, instant message, take pictures, run applications or play videos and music. So it&#8217;s easy to forget how uncomfortable they are to use as phones. Most are rectangular slabs that are awkward to hold against the ear, causing many smartphone users to also carry a basic cellphone just for calls.</p>
<p>At least one smartphone manufacturer is doing something about this. This week, Research In Motion (RIMM) introduced the BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8220, available for $150 with a two-year contract from T-Mobile (DT). This device is the first BlackBerry in a flip phone, or clamshell, form. Like RIM&#8217;s mainstream, candy-bar-shaped BlackBerry Pearl, the Flip uses a SureType keyboard, which has condensed keys and relies on predictive text software.</p>

<p>After using the Pearl Flip for a week, I&#8217;ve found it to be a stylish messaging device that works well as a comfortable phone. I really liked its exterior screen, which is designed to show previews of incoming messages, saving people the trouble of flipping open the device. It runs on T-Mobile&#8217;s slow EDGE network, but has built-in Wi-Fi and the ability to automatically connect to saved, nearby wireless networks.</p>
<p>First-time smartphone buyers will likely find the Pearl Flip to be a good fit. When it flips open, a special hinge drops the top half of the device slightly behind the bottom half, and a handy trackball makes navigation easy. The Flip&#8217;s Web browser enables streaming videos that look sharp on its interior screen, and a microSD card slot supports up to 16 gigabytes of memory.</p>
<p>But current BlackBerry owners who want to switch to a device with a more comfortable phone may have trouble adjusting to the Pearl Flip&#8217;s SureType keyboard &#8212; especially if they&#8217;re used to a device with a full QWERTY keyboard. Though the Pearl Flip&#8217;s keyboard is a generous size and its keys are flat and easy to press, its SureType design assigns two letters to almost every key, which can be frustrating to use when predictive text guesses a different word than that which is intended.</p>

<p>The Pearl Flip supports T-Mobile&#8217;s Unlimited HotSpot Calling, a service that doesn&#8217;t use any minutes on phone calls begun in Wi-Fi zones. Even if a user leaves the Wi-Fi zone in which he or she started a phone conversation, the call passes over to the T-Mobile cellular network without dropping out. This service costs $10 monthly in addition to regular service charges.</p>
<p>When I made calls on the Pearl Flip, friends on the other line noted how crisp and clear our connection sounded. And best of all, the Pearl Flip&#8217;s long, clamshell profile was easy to hold and fit snugly and comfortably between my ear and shoulder when I needed two hands to carry things.</p>
<p>BlackBerry&#8217;s signature red light blinks in this device&#8217;s top corner to indicate new messages. The 1.6-inch exterior screen displays about 25 words (give or take) from newly received emails, instant messages, SMS, MMS, calendar notifications and task reminders. If a message is received from a contact to whom a photo is assigned, that photo also shows up on the external screen to identify the sender. Side buttons let users scroll up or down through these previews.</p>
<p>This display is designed so that the same message being previewed externally will appear on the internal screen as soon as the Pearl Flip is opened. This makes sense because people will want to reply to some emails or read their entire contents after seeing a short preview. But my device didn&#8217;t do this at first; instead, the internal screen seemed completely unrelated to the external screen. I finally got this feature to work after my external screen froze and I rebooted the Pearl Flip. RIM said it hadn&#8217;t seen this behavior before, and wasn&#8217;t sure what had caused it.</p>
<p>The interior screen measures 2.4 inches diagonally and has a resolution of 240&#215;320 pixels, which is a larger, higher resolution screen than most basic cellphones. While using Wi-Fi, I pulled up YouTube.com and watched a video. It played without skipping or stopping while streaming directly from the Web. A higher-resolution video, which was saved to my device, automatically played in horizontal mode so as to take up the entire screen; YouTube videos play vertically, without using the full screen.</p>
<p>Up to 10 email accounts can be set up on the Pearl Flip; I had no problems using Hotmail, .Mac and Gmail accounts. I also signed into AOL Instant Messenger and Google Talk on the Pearl Flip. Along with these messaging programs, ICQ, Windows Live Messenger, Yahoo Messenger and BlackBerry Messenger also come pre-installed and ready to use.</p>
<p>If my Pearl Flip was closed and I remained signed into an instant-messaging client, notifications appeared on the external screen telling me who was sending an IM and what it said. When I opened the device, I was automatically directed to the screen where I could reply to the instant message.</p>
<p>I tested the T-Mobile Unlimited HotSpot Calling feature by starting calls using a Wi-Fi network and then leaving the network&#8217;s range. The calls remained steady without dropping or fading, and if I were a paying customer, I wouldn&#8217;t have been charged minutes for those calls. Calls that start out of Wi-Fi zones and end in Wi-Fi zones do deduct minutes. My Pearl Flip had no trouble automatically moving from the cellular network to a Wi-Fi network.</p>
<p>All T-Mobile Wi-Fi hotspots, such as at airports or in Starbucks (SBUX), automatically work with the Pearl Flip if you&#8217;re registered for the $10 monthly Unlimited Hotspot Calling.</p>
<p>If you&#8217;re considering taking the plunge into the always-connected world of smartphones, or if you want a more comfortable phone in your smartphone and don&#8217;t mind the quirks of SureType, the Pearl Flip 8220 may be the BlackBerry for you.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>It can be hard to find just what you want in the 24-hour news cycle that constantly churns content out online.</p>
<p>One way to find the information you want is by setting up computer-generated alerts. These electronic notifications are relatively simple to use and offer a range of helpful services, from a virtual heads-up when your name is mentioned online to messages about a product&#8217;s price suddenly dropping.</p>
<p>For years, I&#8217;ve used Google Alerts as a way of keeping track of myself online. If my name is mentioned in a blog or if this column appears on the Web, such as on the site of a newspaper that syndicates it, a Google Alert sends me an email about it. Google Alerts can work for you to find a variety of things, such as telling you if a video of a favorite band popped up online or that a blogger posted something about last night&#8217;s episode of &#8220;Mad Men.&#8221;</p>
<p>In about a month, <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=goog'>Google</a> will begin delivering these alerts to users via feeds, as well as emails. Google (GOOG) certainly isn&#8217;t alone in the alerts arena, as Yahoo (YHOO), Microsoft (MSFT) and AOL (TWX) are also players. This week I tried two small companies that recently joined the mission to help users find the Web content using alerts.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Pinpointing Searches</h5>
<p>I tried Alerts.com and Yotify.com, and found worthwhile features in both. While Google Alerts does a good job of finding search terms in news, blogs and videos, Alerts.com and Yotify use forms that are a cinch to fill out and let you pinpoint your searches.</p>
<p>Alerts.com offers to notify users via email, SMS text messages or even voice calls to a cellphone or landline. The site organizes your alerts on a personalized Web page and uses a desktop application called Elertz to tell you when an alert has generated results. I liked this site&#8217;s flexibility: It not only gave me different ways to receive notifications, but also enabled a variety of options for time-specific deliveries of alerts.</p>
<p>But Yotify has advantages of its own, including the ability to integrate with FriendFeed and Facebook so friends can offer their recommendations or opinions. It also lets users search for event tickets or items auctioned on eBay (EBAY). And a smart preview panel gives you an idea of the type of results your search will return before you submit the request for an alert.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Viewing Results</h5>
<p>For now, Google Alerts and Yotify will send alert notifications only via email, though all three services will let you view your alert results online. All three are free, but SMS alerts sent to a cellphone via Alerts.com may not be, depending on your plan.</p>
<p>All in all, I found there were certain things each service was good at doing. For example, Alerts.com lets me know college football scores when I want them: only after the final score; at the end of each quarter and after the final score; or at the end of each quarter, after the final score and after each time a team scores points. Yotify gave me detailed options in a Craigslist search for furniture, including showing only listings with photos or just those that included the word &#8220;sofa&#8221; in a title; it will even hunt for a specific price range.</p>
<p>For the person who wants to spend minimal time creating basic alerts, Google Alerts will do the trick. These can be narrowed down to show results that fall into the News, Web, Blogs, Video or Groups categories, or you can perform more-blanketed searches using a Comprehensive category.</p>
<p>Alerts.com offers plenty of simple alerts that require only a bit of scheduling to set up. Each alert appears as a widget that can be expanded, edited or deleted with a simple click, and this page has a clean look with attractive, cohesive graphics.</p>
<p>I didn&#8217;t care much for Elertz, the desktop component of Alerts.com, because once installed, it notified me of new Alerts data using an irksome star that glowed red until I checked my notifications. Elertz didn&#8217;t work properly on my Windows XP machine until Alerts.com fixed a bug.</p>
<p>But Alerts.com&#8217;s price watch and price protection alerts are incredibly useful. Price watch looks to see if an item&#8217;s price drops into a lower price range, at which point users are notified. Price protection watches to see if products you bought are now on sale so you can get a refund. I tried both, and I&#8217;m hoping I&#8217;ll hear soon that a specific pair of Anthropologie boots is on sale.</p>
<p>Yotify uses the idea of virtual scouts that scour the Web for specific information. Scout findings can be condensed or expanded in one click, and results can be filtered for more specific findings or shared with friends via Facebook or FriendFeed.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Scout Work</h5>
<p>But some scouts took too much work to set up. When I tried to set up a scout for college football scores, I didn&#8217;t see a sports category (Alerts.com had a colorful NCAA icon right on its home page). Instead, I had to choose News, then select ESPN, then NCAAF and finally enter &#8220;Penn State&#8221; in a key word box for my scout. And after all that, the scout offered results only daily or hourly via email.</p>
<p>I would also prefer if I could better organize my scout lists. As it was, all of my results appeared in one list: The NCAA scout was right above the scout that found Obama mentions on Huffington Post, and below that were results for YouTube&#8217;s most-watched videos. Yotify says it will add ways to more neatly arrange data in the next month or so.</p>
<p>On average, Yotify returned more results instantly, such as 10 instant Craigslist sofa results compared with Alerts.com&#8217;s two in the first few hours.</p>
<p>Overall, these sites are worth trying so you can find which alert system works best for you and stop wasting time searching the Web the old-fashioned way.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>After spending summer vacation shooting the sights, many people face the same chore: labeling and organizing digital photos before forgetting what they are and where they were taken.</p>
<p>Now there&#8217;s a way to upload photos that are already labeled with their exact latitude and longitude using geotagging, the fancy name for labeling data with information on its geographic origin. Photos with &#8220;geotags&#8221; have coordinates embedded invisibly in them. Some programs or online photo services use these tags to generate maps showing just where each photo was taken, or to label or organize the images. Not long ago, this capability was mostly done through manual labeling or with costly equipment.</p>

<p>This week, I tested the $129 Eye-Fi Explore Card (<a href="http://EyeFi.com" rel="external">EyeFi.com</a>), a special two-gigabyte memory card from Eye-Fi Inc. that adds a photo geotagging feature to Eye-Fi&#8217;s original functionality: the automatic wireless uploading of photos, straight from a digital camera to a home computer or photo-sharing service. If all goes well, users can capture and upload what are essentially geographically prelabeled batches of digital photos &#8212; with minimal effort and time.</p>
<p>But after days of testing, I found myself more frustrated as I used this wireless memory card in various places and situations, and found the tagging to be unreliable in one scenario. (Eye-Fi Inc. said my experiences weren&#8217;t typical.) At home in Washington, D.C., and while on a business trip to California, I tried it using a two-year-old Kodak digital camera and two different Vista laptops, though it also works on Macs.</p>
<p>Eye-Fi introduced the Explore Card as a follow-up to the company&#8217;s original wireless memory card, which it introduced last fall. Once set up, the first Eye-Fi card initiated the transferring of photos to a computer or Web site whenever the digital camera was turned on and as long as it was near a pre-associated wireless network.</p>
<p>Through a partnership with Skyhook Wireless, the Explore card can automatically label photos with their latitude and longitude using data from the Skyhook&#8217;s Wi-Fi positioning system. As long as a photo is captured within the Skyhook coverage area, which the company says covers 70% of North America, and the geotagging is enabled, each photo will be coded with data identifying where it was captured.</p>

<p>The Explore Card turned otherwise normal photo-sharing sites into mini maps showing where I had traveled while on a business trip in Silicon Valley. I set my account up to work with Flickr, Kodak Gallery, Snapfish, Shutterfly and Picasa Web Albums, though only one will work at a time. Flickr, Picasa Web Albums and Smugmug make use of geotagged photos by tagging shots with their location data, such as &#8220;Downtown Palo Alto, California.&#8221; I used Flickr and Picasa Web Albums to instantaneously generate a map showing where I was when I took photos.</p>
<p>On Flickr, each image was represented by a pink dot associated with one of several photos displayed in a horizontal bar below the map. This map can be searched for specific tags (photo labels) or locations and can be narrowed to show images from everyone who uses Flickr, just your own photostream, or only photos from friends or contacts. My searches returned results in seconds, finding shots that were geotagged with &#8220;Palo Alto&#8221; and tagged by me as containing flowers. I enjoyed looking at other Flickr users&#8217; photos when I searched everyone&#8217;s images, specifically in cities where I recognized landmarks.</p>
<p>Picasa Web Albums showed each geotagged image on a map by placing tiny versions of each photo on the map. In certain cases, when I had multiple photos taken at the same spot, photos appeared with lines drawn from them to a spot, much like spokes of a wheel. I also looked at my Picasa photos on maps in Google Earth; a quick link to the program is conveniently found at the top of the Picasa Web Albums screen.</p>
<p>Another key feature of the Explore Card is its hotspot connectivity. The card is capable of working in any Wayport location, which includes McDonald&#8217;s (MCD) restaurants and certain airports and hotels. Though using Wayport locations normally requires sign-ins and/or payment via a computer screen, the Explore Card works as soon as the camera is turned on in these locations. This service is free for the first year, but after that, it costs $19 annually to continue.</p>
<p>Finally, the Explore Card notifies users via SMS or email messages when photos have either started or finished uploading; or if these uploads are interrupted, which happened to me a few times. This is useful in Wayport wireless zones, where the camera has no real way of signaling when an upload is finished or when a computer isn&#8217;t handy.</p>
<p>In a hotel with a flaky Wi-Fi network, the Explore Card was crippled, though I blame the hotel for this inconvenience. But even when I traveled to a local McDonald&#8217;s, where Eye-Fi&#8217;s maker has a deal for free Wi-Fi for its cards, the Eye-Fi stuttered and couldn&#8217;t consistently upload photos. When I plugged the card directly into my laptops, the results weren&#8217;t much better.</p>
<p>If you aren&#8217;t within Wi-Fi range while taking a photo, it won&#8217;t be geotagged. I ran into this issue in one instance: On California&#8217;s highway 101, I took a handful of photos, but when I checked my Eye-Fi account later, none of these photos was automatically geotagged.</p>
<p>Some people worry about privacy settings when it comes to uploading geotagged photos directly to a sharing Web site. Settings within the Eye-Fi Manager make it easy to adjust permissions to determine who can see your photos within each of about 25 sharing sites.</p>
<p>Users can opt to share photos only to a home computer through their own Wi-Fi network, and a special card is designed for just that: the $79 Eye-Fi Home. This is meant to serve as a shortcut for transfers.</p>
<p>The original Eye-Fi, which costs $99, was a useful tool as a wireless memory card, but I didn&#8217;t have as much luck with the more expensive Eye-Fi Explore. Still, when it did work, I found geotagging to be a great way of automatically labeling and organizing my photos. Instead of just being neatly stored in a folder on your computer, geotagged images are given a spark of life and relevancy when plotted out on a map.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>My Dad will be proud to read that I&#8217;ve spent much of the past week studying my finances and figuring out my budget. But I&#8217;m willing to bet (figuratively since betting isn&#8217;t in my new budget) he&#8217;ll be surprised to learn that I did this in no time using a Web-based program that didn&#8217;t cost me a dime.</p>
<p>This week, I tested a free Web site called <a href="http://Mint.com" rel="external">Mint.com</a> that serves as a Web home base for account information from credit cards, credit unions and bank accounts. The site securely and automatically logs into those accounts, fetches the latest data and presents the information in easy-to-read and useful ways.</p>

<p>Mint hopes to help users get a better handle on where their money is going, how much is in each account, and what can be done to budget that money more efficiently. It sends automatic alerts about account data or when you exceed your budget. It can even translate a bank&#8217;s often odd rendering of merchants&#8217; names into plain-English versions of your financial transactions.</p>
<p>Starting May 6, the site will let users add investments, such as individual retirement accounts and 401(k) plans, to their accounts, though Mint isn&#8217;t designed for serious investors. Today, readers can get sneak peak access to this Investments feature via <a href="http://www.mint.com/wsj" rel="external">www.mint.com/wsj</a>. In June, Mint will add auto loans, student loans and mortgages.</p>
<p>Mint won&#8217;t work offline because it&#8217;s completely Web-based, and can&#8217;t be used to pay bills or move any money around, meaning people will still need to visit separate sites for bill payments and money transfers.</p>
<p>Talk of money-related software programs often brings to mind the old reliables: <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=intu'>Intuit</a> Inc.&#8217;s (INTU) Quicken and <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=msft'>Microsoft</a> (MSFT) Money. But some of these programs can cost close to $100 and require intense bookkeeping. Stripped-down versions of these products are available, but these still include fees. <a href="http://Geezeo.com" rel="external">Geezeo.com</a> is a Web service that&#8217;s more comparable to Mint.com, but it incorporates social-networking tools like introducing users with like interests.</p>
<p>Mint was created for 20-somethings like me who want to pay more attention to their finances but aren&#8217;t interested in taking hours each week to do so. This Web site worked ideally for me, and its clean interface integrates Web 2.0 features in a way that makes it a pleasure to use. I think it will appeal to a broad range of people who want to feel more in control of their money, but don&#8217;t want to spend a lot of time updating their information.</p>
<p>I set up my information on Mint in minutes, not hours, and used it to track five accounts. In seconds, Mint used data from my accounts to automatically generate colorful pie charts that illustrated where my money was spent &#8212; and most expenses were accurately labeled. I was pleased to find my local bank in a list of Mint-supported companies. And the site even encouraged me to look at my 401(k)&#8217;s progress online for the first time in a while because I didn&#8217;t need to dig into an out-of-the-way, unfamiliar Web site.</p>
<p>Security is important for a site like Mint.com, so it teamed up with online banking-service provider Yodlee to make secure connections to banks. This involves using encryption that the company claims is the same as what banks use. Mint also says that because it requires nothing more than an email address, password and ZIP Code from each person, registration is anonymous. And the company claims that it never sees or stores password information, nor does it ever see account numbers.</p>
<p>When setting up an account, Mint acknowledges nicknames for companies, like Amex for American Express (AXP), making it easy to find specific banks and credit-card companies. If you&#8217;d like to sign up on Mint, but don&#8217;t already have online accounts set up, Mint will give step-by-step directions on how to do this &#8212; whether via a company&#8217;s site or by phone.</p>
<p>The site suggests alternative companies that will save you more money than those you&#8217;re currently using. Some, but not all, of these companies are sponsors of the site. After entering my savings-account information, I learned about a high-yield savings account that would potentially allow me to earn hundreds more in interest each year. Some of these suggested alternatives were familiar, while others &#8212; like Bank of the Internet USA &#8212; weren&#8217;t.</p>
<p>I found Mint&#8217;s automatic alerts to be especially helpful. Each alert can be personalized to notify you via email or an SMS message on your mobile phone when something happens in an account. Account summaries, for example, can be sent via email and text message every Friday, the first of every month or never. Alerts can be adjusted to tell people that their credit-card bill is due within a certain number of days; if a pre-set budget is exceeded; or if a bank charges extra fees.</p>
<p>Mint&#8217;s new Investments section showed me details about two investments. A handy graph showed the status of my account earnings and compared them with the Dow Jones Industrial Average, Nasdaq and the S&amp;P 500. Individual stocks can be added into your account, though I could see only the balance of a trust holding one of my stocks.</p>
<p>In the Trends section, I learned what my most frequent expenditures were, as well as the total amount of money spent per month, which was interesting to see since I don&#8217;t usually add up all of my expenses. Trends can show you how your spending stacks up with everyone else &#8212; that is, people in the U.S. who use Mint. My account showed I ate at a Chipotle (CMG) chain restaurant once in February and once in April, spending the exact amount each time. (I like their barbacoa fajita burrito.) But I spent about $4 to $5 less than the average Chipotle customer.</p>
<p>If certain expenses are mislabeled, they can easily be renamed and reassigned to different categories. Pie charts and graphs can be altered with one mouse click to become more or less specific, and budgets can be set after looking at spending history on an easy-to-understand bar graph.</p>
<p>Digital conveniences like online bill payments and Web transactions can lead to people putting less thought into their finances. But the value of knowing specifically where money is and how it is spent is a tool that will likely encourage better financial planning and habits. I only wish Mint had a way to incorporate online bill payments so I could do all of my financial work in one place on this site. Otherwise, Mint is a real boon to people who want to tell their dads that they&#8217;re on top of their finances &#8212; and mean it.</p>

<p>On a chilly day, most folks find it tough to open the front door to retrieve the newspaper &#8212; much less climb a 15,000-foot mountain. But plenty of people court danger by rappelling down canyons and camping in remote woodlands. This week, I tested a device that will give thrill seekers a little extra insurance: It lets the folks back home track their progress, and learn when they&#8217;re OK or when they&#8217;re in trouble.</p>
<p>When activated, the $170 SPOT Satellite Messenger from SPOT Inc., the Milpitas, Calif., unit of <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=GSAT'>Globalstar</a> Inc., emits a signal to GPS satellites, which notify SPOT&#8217;s messaging service. The service then sends a message to friends, family or emergency rescue teams about your current status. Because it uses GPS technology, the SPOT will work even when you&#8217;re far from cellphone signal range and anywhere in the world.</p>
<p>I tested SPOT in my Washington, D.C., neighborhood (city parks still count as outdoorsy) and on a trip across the California desert and mountains on the way to a conference &#8212; though I was scaling mountains in an air-conditioned SUV rather than in a rock-climbing harness.</p>

<p>In my tests, SPOT worked without a problem. Notifications from the device were delivered to my friends via email and text message and included my current latitude and longitude. The service also sent along canned messages that I set up in advance on the company&#8217;s Web site at <a href="http://www.findmespot.com" rel="external">www.findmespot.com</a> and hyperlinks to Google Maps that showed my location.</p>
<p>SPOT charges a $100 annual service fee, which includes an unlimited number of messages that can be sent out from your device using three buttons: OK/Check, Help and 911. An additional $50 per year tracking service called SPOTcasting follows and marks your exact location every 10 minutes for 24 hours each time it&#8217;s initiated.</p>
<p>This simple and straightforward device could really help in a dangerous situation. And the company takes its job seriously: A steely message on the SPOT packaging reads, &#8220;Opening this box is the first step in making sure you don&#8217;t come home in one.&#8221; But SPOT could also save the day in less-adventurous situations, such as when your car dies and you&#8217;re out of cellphone range.</p>
<p>However, SPOT isn&#8217;t perfect. While its three message-sending buttons make it easy to use, they also limit the types of messages it can send. There&#8217;s no keyboard, so messages must be brief and set up in advance on the Web site. And the device only sends messages and can&#8217;t receive them. Your friends and family have no way of getting back in touch with you on SPOT should you send a Help message from beyond cellphone range.</p>
<p>SPOT is a bright orange device with roughly the same surface measurement as a BlackBerry, though it&#8217;s considerably thicker. Its durable casing makes it waterproof and floatable, along with working in extremes like -40 degrees Fahrenheit and up to 21,000 feet above sea level. It runs on two AA lithium batteries, which last for different amounts of time according to the type of message being sent.</p>
<p>Setting up SPOT took only a few minutes on the Web site. A default or personalized message can be set up to go out with OK/Check and Help notifications, and email addresses and cellphone numbers (for SMS text messages) can be entered online as the destinations for these messages. Every message includes the user&#8217;s current location in terms of latitude and longitude, along with a hyperlink to access that location via Google Maps.</p>

<p>The OK/Check button can be used most casually by owners of this gadget, as it merely serves to assure others that you&#8217;re fine. A good example might be two people on a three-month sailing trip who use this button as a means of checking in with family every Sunday night.</p>
<p>If OK/Check is held down for five seconds, it initiates the SPOTcasting tracking service (provided you&#8217;ve signed up for it) and locates your device every 10 minutes for a 24-hour period. These tracked points show up on SPOT&#8217;s Web site and are displayed as numbered points on Google Maps.</p>
<p>SPOT worked for me while driving through a regional park with a campsite, where cellphone range was faint, and up into boulder-crusted mountains. Just minutes after pressing Help or OK/Check or initiating tracking, friends received word of my location via emails and text messages.</p>
<p>You can&#8217;t set SPOT to track a trip for longer than 24 hours or at different intervals, such as every hour for a week. And the only way for others to view your tracked points is if they sign in using your online account&#8217;s username and password.</p>
<p>The Help button is used in more urgent situations and uses messages such as &#8220;Urgent help needed. Pick me up at campsite.&#8221; (The default for Help is &#8220;This is a HELP message. Please send for help ASAP.&#8221;) But preset messages shouldn&#8217;t be made too specific during the online setup because they can&#8217;t be changed from the device later.</p>
<p>The 911 and Help automatic notifications will always override less urgent messages like OK/Check or SPOTcasting. In the case of the 911 and Help buttons, one can be pressed after the other and the messages for both will still go out at the same time. The 911 button will send a message every five minutes until power runs out (the company says this will last for up to seven days) or until the message is canceled; Help sends a message every five minutes for an hour or until canceled.</p>
<p>The 911 button is more serious. When pressed, SPOT Inc. automatically notifies a certified 911 company called the GEOS International Emergency Response Center, which contacts your specified emergency contacts first to see if they know anything about your situation before dispatching a rescue squad using your coordinates.</p>
<p>If you can adjust to SPOT&#8217;s three-button approach, the device could be helpful for you or someone you know during outdoor adventures. Many people will buy SPOT simply for its 911 button, as an insurance policy on fluky cellphone service.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>It&#8217;s hard to remember a day when drivers set off on road trips with just a few hand-written directions and the map in the glove compartment for backup. Today, a stop at the computer is for many people almost as essential as a stop at the gas station. With a few keystrokes, anyone can print a list of turn-by-turn instructions from a Web site.</p>
<p>But what about when you need directions and you&#8217;re unable to get to a computer? The same companies that you look to for directions on your home PC are eager to help out on your cellphone, including Google, Yahoo and MapQuest. But while the mobile versions of these services are improving, the user interface of a cellphone isn&#8217;t ideal for inputting addresses and extracting directions. Even smart phones with larger screens and full keyboards can be hampered by slow Internet speeds.</p>
<p>This week I tried a service that cuts the time it takes to get directions from a cellphone. It&#8217;s called Dial DIR-ECT-IONS, and it works as it sounds: You dial the word &#8220;directions&#8221; into a cellphone (347-328-4667) and speak the address, name of business chain or event to which you need directions. Step-by-step directions are instantly sent to your phone via SMS, or text message.</p>
<p>This isn&#8217;t a substitute for phones that have GPS and can give real-time directions, and it may not be ideal for those who need visual cues, like turn-by-turn maps, but it is very convenient on the go and works on any basic cellphone.</p>
<p>The service, from a determined start-up called Dial Directions Inc., is free &#8212; except for the cost of receiving text messages on your phone. After the first 30 days of use, a one-line advertisement will start appearing at the bottom of the last text message sent per set of directions (some take multiple text messages to include all of the steps).</p>
<p>In many instances, I found using Dial Directions to be helpful and efficient, a welcome change from squinting to see miniature maps on cellphone screens. It&#8217;s smart enough to ask you if you know how to get to the highway, thus saving you from reading directions you already know. I tried the service with a few different cities &#8212; you don&#8217;t have to be in the city to use it because GPS isn&#8217;t involved &#8212; and valued the instant gratification of returned results with so little effort.</p>
<p>Dial Directions is still a work in progress. The service prides itself on superb voice-detection technology, but in one instance, it interpreted &#8220;New York City&#8221; as &#8220;Newark, N.J.,&#8221; and didn&#8217;t stop to check the accuracy of this, forcing me to hang up to restart. And the two other aspects of the service, finding business chains and events, need just a little more time to include a better variety of businesses.</p>
<p>The service was launched in July, but this week marks its expansion to nine metropolitan areas, including New York City, Washington, D.C., Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego and Sacramento, Calif. The service still isn&#8217;t in major cities like Boston and Philadelphia, but these cities and others will be included within the next month, in the company&#8217;s attempt to take the service nationwide.</p>
<p>Dial Directions also plans to add landmarks in the next month. I tried asking for directions to the White House and Yankee Stadium without any luck. General terms will also be better integrated into the service. I tried saying &#8220;movies&#8221; but Dial Directions thought I was saying &#8220;Mervin&#8217;s&#8221; one time and &#8220;Arby&#8217;s&#8221; the next. Just 40 terms, including &#8220;hotel&#8221; and &#8220;gas station,&#8221; are usable right now.</p>
<p>I called Dial Directions from a Motorola Razr cellphone, a Research In Motion BlackBerry Curve and an Apple iPhone. All worked well. Since SMS messages are limited to about 160 characters, regardless of your phone, none of the directions came through in just one message; most directions required from two to five text messages. Symbols help to shorten the messages, like using &#8220;L @ Maryland Ave. SW&#8221; to tell a user to turn left at Maryland Avenue Southwest.</p>
<p>To receive these directions, you must first tell the service what you&#8217;re looking for. The female voice representing Dial Directions is friendly and doesn&#8217;t sound stiff and robotic. She offers to give instructions on how to use the service if you don&#8217;t know how. After telling her what you&#8217;re looking for, she asks what city you&#8217;re in and where you&#8217;re trying to go.</p>
<p>I tried a variety of addresses and intersections; the system suggests not saying &#8220;Street&#8221; or &#8220;Avenue.&#8221; In certain instances when a highway was involved, I was asked if I knew how to get on the highway, and if I did, that extra text wasn&#8217;t included in my directions. Once I confirmed what I was looking for, the voice said directions would be on the way in a couple of text messages. Each time, they appeared on my phone almost instantly.</p>
<p>In the case of business chains or general terms like &#8220;hotel,&#8221; the voice told me first of the closest one it knew, asking me to confirm whether or not it had found the right place. If I said no, it suggested four more that were the next closest. This worked well in most cases, including searches for McDonald&#8217;s, Bloomingdale&#8217;s, Starbucks and pizza. However, in a hunt for the closest Dunkin&#8217; Donuts, it couldn&#8217;t find four stores that were located a mile from my office in downtown D.C.; instead, it thought the closest one was in Arlington, Va.</p>
<p>The company pledges that this and other faults will be improved over the next month as its database is improved and as more users report issues that can be corrected.</p>
<p>Directions to local events can be retrieved as long as the event is posted on <a href="http://DialDirections.com" rel="external">DialDirections.com</a>. Then anyone can just say the name of the event (like &#8220;DC Shorts Film Festival&#8221;) to receive directions to that event. But this feature, too, isn&#8217;t what it should be right now. On my way to a Washington Nationals game, I couldn&#8217;t get the service to recognize the name of my event, which was frustrating.</p>
<p>If the company can correct some of its hit-or-miss aspects, this free service could be a big help, especially for people who don&#8217;t own smart phones. But even if you do own a smart phone, it&#8217;s faster than typing in data and waiting for a Web browser to retrieve the directions. If this service can improve its ability to find nearby businesses, this alone could be really useful.</p>
<p>When it knows about more locations, Dial Directions will be a great service. As it stands now, it&#8217;s helpful for directions from one address to another in certain areas. Sometimes, the most straightforward solutions really do work best.</p>
