			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>If you&#8217;re like me, you like to make the most out of what little free time you have. One way of finding ideas for activities without wasting precious minutes is by searching online. But sometimes the process of browsing the Web can suck you in and waste more time than it saves. </p>
<p>This week, I tested a tool called Goby (pronounced go-be), <a href="http://www.goby.com">www.goby.com</a>, which works as an activity search engine to help you find things to do. It tries to be simple enough so that you can get some ideas and start doing the things you want to do rather than wasting hours in front of the computer. </p>

<p>Goby uses three boxes—What, Where and When—with drop-down menus to find results for your query. It crawls the Web searching what it considers high quality information from 500 sources and employs a part-human, part-machine review process to ensure first-rate results. Goby searches through over 200 categories, including live music, art exhibits, outdoor festivals, spas, bed-and-breakfasts and restaurants.</p>
<p>Using Goby was an emotional roller coaster. With very little effort I found things in Washington, D.C., that I&#8217;ve never heard of in the seven-plus years I&#8217;ve lived here, including tea with Martha Washington and a stuffed Civil War hero horse on display at the Smithsonian. But I also found inaccurate Goby results like an activity in Washington state rather than Washington, D.C., or photos that were supposed to represent a tennis center but instead showed a celebrity&#8217;s child with the same name. And sometimes the same results were listed four times in a row.</p>
<p>Goby&#8217;s results took a serious nose dive when I looked outside the city in my hometown of Allentown, Pa. I searched for all performing arts and theater near Allentown, an area that I know first-hand has plenty to offer in the way of music, theater and dance. Goby returned two results—one for the Nutcracker in December and another for a Shakespeare play that was put on last July. A quick check of my hometown newspaper&#8217;s Web site showed hundreds of performances to attend in the coming months.</p>

<p>Goby.com has been available to the public for only a few weeks and it is still working out some kinks. The more people use it, the more accurate its results will become—or at least that&#8217;s what its founders hope will happen. When Goby&#8217;s search results are accurate, they include the kinds of thing locals would want to see or do in their own hometown, and that&#8217;s no small feat. But people won&#8217;t have a lot of patience for some of the erroneous results that now show up in Goby. Also, this activity search engine currently lacks features like the ability to build and save itineraries, make one-click ticket purchases or book reservations.</p>
<p>Though Goby&#8217;s query boxes ask users to enter What, Where and When, the When is always an optional specification, and people can enter either What or Where if they only know one of these factors. General suggestions of categories also are made in Goby&#8217;s drop-down menus. The What box opens five categories: things to do, food and drink, events, places to stay and, right now, fall fun; many of these open several, more-specified subcategories. For example, I started a search and followed a four-part trail: things to do, outdoor recreation, horseback riding and horseback riding trails—all within the same drop-down menu. </p>
<p>If you know what you want to do but not where you want to do it, the drop-down arrow in the Where box opens an interactive map of the U.S. Users can pan around the entire country, zooming in on specific areas or small towns. I even zoomed in on Minot, N.D. (population 35,000) and found out about an event taking place at the Northwest Arts Center on Nov. 2. </p>
<p>This map comes in handy if you know the general geographic area where you would like to spend time, but don&#8217;t know the area&#8217;s name. </p>
<p>Lists of query results are deliberately designed to show more than just Web links, like what Google (GOOG) often displays. Suggested activities are displayed in a numbered list on the left side of the screen, and a map with corresponding numbers is displayed on the right, moving along with your cursor as you scroll on the page. A blue flashlight tool on the map can be dragged anywhere to pinpoint exactly where you want to find activities, and after you drop the flashlight on a spot, the left-hand list dynamically changes to correspond with that map view.</p>
<p>A &#8220;More Info&#8221; tab shows vital information for each query result like a description, time, address and Web site for the activity. If you are looking at lodging, you can adjust a price scale to limit or expand results for rooms that cost a certain amount per night. Lists of results can be sorted according to category: Art events can be sorted by relevance, distance, date or name; bed-and-breakfasts also can be sorted by price. </p>
<p>Photos representing these activities are pulled in from source sites like bedandbreakfast.com as well as from Google and Flickr. While these images can provide a quick glimpse of something while saving users from navigating to another Web page, some of the results weren&#8217;t accurate. For example, when I searched for tennis in Washington, D.C., a tennis program that I didn&#8217;t know about called &#8220;Tennis at Shiloh&#8221; was listed in results. But four out of six photos showed images of Shiloh, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie&#8217;s child of the same name. I called the organization to confirm that it is indeed a real program, but without calling, I would have seen the photos, doubted the quality of the place and looked for another spot to play tennis.</p>
<p>A &#8220;What&#8217;s Nearby&#8221; function is designed to help people expand their activity searches. It takes the address of a selected activity and suggests other things nearby like places to go for dinner or where to listen to live music. </p>
<p>Unfortunately, Goby doesn&#8217;t let you build an itinerary. So if you find a few possible activities for a weekend trip to Williamsburg, Va., and then use &#8220;What&#8217;s Nearby&#8221; to find a pub for lunch, a restaurant for dinner and a bed-and-breakfast for the night, you can&#8217;t save all of these findings using Goby. The company says it plans to incorporate these features in the near future.</p>
<p>Goby would be incredibly helpful if it had a mobile app. This Sunday when I was across town from my house and had an unexpected block of free time, I could have used Goby to find a nearby art exhibit or a spot for apple picking. Goby says it is working on an iPhone app, which it expects to release later this year. </p>
<p>If you get lucky with Goby, you&#8217;ll find activities that let you do as its name says: Go, be and enjoy your surrounding area. But the site&#8217;s results need to be much more accurate for me to start relying on it full time.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Windows 7, Microsoft Corp.&#8217;s new operating system due out next week, is giving the company a lot to be happy about. By early reports, it&#8217;s fast, easy on the eyes and fixes most of the problems that plagued its predecessor, Vista. But while Microsoft (MSFT) employees are doing the dance of joy, some consumers are confused and scared about the prospect of upgrading their computers to Windows 7.</p>

<p>The upgrade from Windows XP to Windows 7 is particularly daunting because it requires first wiping the computer&#8217;s hard disk to perform what&#8217;s called a &#8220;custom&#8221; or &#8220;clean&#8221; install. This clears out the old operating system—as well as all of your programs, files and settings. To save personal files, XP users must back them up first, typically on an external hard disk, then transfer them back. Programs, however, will be lost altogether, so users must re-install these using their original CDs or installation files, and then also re-install all the program updates they&#8217;ve accumulated over the years.</p>
<p>People upgrading to Windows 7 from Vista may have it easier. In some common cases, they can upgrade to Windows 7 &#8220;in place,&#8221; which means they can save programs, files and settings right where they were. But since Vista was such a dud, many Windows users still use XP.</p>
<p>This week, I tested a program that tries to make the upgrade to Windows 7 just as easy for XP users as it is for some Vista users. I tested Laplink Software Inc.&#8217;s PCmover Windows 7 Upgrade Assistant (<a href="http://bit.ly/JeafI">http://bit.ly/JeafI</a>), a $15 program that saves programs, files and settings on the computer in a place that won&#8217;t be affected by the installation of Windows. This eliminates the hassle of using an external hard disk or re-installing programs. The company uses the analogy of a moving van to load up your computer&#8217;s information, storing it locally until it can be unloaded again on the same PC with a new operating system.</p>
<p>I tested this program using an Acer Aspire One netbook running Windows XP. It took me two hours from start to finish, a three-part process of installing the Upgrade Assistant, installing Windows 7, and then re-installing the PCmover program. I followed instructions and the process of upgrading was really quite easy, showing me the programs and files (photos, videos and documents) I had on my old operating system.</p>
<p>Afterward, I did have to dig around on my computer a little bit to make some adjustments, like fixing Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) iTunes music program so it opened in Windows 7. And I found it a little annoying that, throughout the process, the Upgrade Assistant tried to get me to buy more software programs, like RegistryBooster and DiskImage, by saying the programs would better prepare my old PC for the switch.</p>

<p>The Upgrade Assistant also works with PCs running Vista. Microsoft offers an in-place upgrade option from Vista to 7, but this mainly works for people transferring from an identical version of Vista to an identical version of 7, like Windows Vista 32-bit Home Premium to Windows 7 32-bit Home Premium.</p>
<p>This program won&#8217;t magically fix every upgrade issue you face. If you bought your computer many years ago, it may not be able to run Windows 7 at all, because the hardware may be insufficient. </p>
<p>Another problem is that most netbooks and some laptops don&#8217;t come with built-in disk drives, making it a challenge to install Windows 7, since it comes on a DVD. I had to call around town to find a Radio Shack selling an external DVD disk drive that plugged into my Acer netbook via a USB cord.</p>
<p>Some security software programs, like that from McAfee Inc. (MFE) and Symantec Corp.&#8217;s (SYMC) Norton Antivirus, may not transfer over to Windows 7, though you should be able to manually install them after the migration.</p>
<p>When first installing the Upgrade Assistant, you can choose to do a full migration (files, settings and programs); just move files and settings; move files only; or perform a custom migration. You also can specify which user accounts to include or exclude and you can opt to exclude certain types of files, like temporary files.</p>
<p>After the PCmover program assessed the contents of my PC, it explained that it was packing my content into a &#8220;moving van&#8221;—a file for holding the content—and offered to break the moving van&#8217;s content into smaller parts for people who have storage limitations while transferring.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s a little nerve-wracking to think about transferring your computer&#8217;s entire contents over without being able to see where the files are going. At least on an external hard disk, you feel like the files are stored on something tangible and accessible—even if some step in the migration goes terribly wrong and the laptop never starts again, however unlikely. </p>
<p>After installing Windows 7 and then re-installing the PCmover program, I was finished. The next time I turned on the PC, a program called StartUp immediately started to run. This appeared to show me a list of programs that automatically ran on my old operating system but which PCmover disabled from running automatically on Windows 7. A quick step allowed programs that I selected to automatically run again. </p>

<p>One thing to note as you upgrade from Windows XP is that your PC may not be equipped to deliver the full Windows 7 experience. Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor Beta, Microsoft&#8217;s own tool, analyzes what will and won&#8217;t work properly when the newest version of Windows installs. The Upgrade Advisor warned me that Windows Aero, the name used for some of the gorgeous visuals in Windows 7, wasn&#8217;t capable of working with my netbook&#8217;s graphics adapter. Sure enough, Aero&#8217;s ability to show tiny, pop-up previews of programs that are running in your taskbar as you hover over them didn&#8217;t work. Instead, the names of the files and programs appeared in text-only preview panes.</p>
<p>The downloadable version of the Upgrade Assistant is now $15 for one license to use on one PC—a special pre-release price before Windows 7 is available Oct. 22. After that, the downloadable version will cost $20 from Laplink.com for one license to use on one PC. If you would rather not download this program, it also will be available for purchase in retail stores by the end of October. Of course, you also will have to buy a copy of Windows 7; the version most consumers will want is called Home Premium and it costs $120 as an upgrade.</p>
<p>If you are considering Windows 7 and you are currently using Windows XP on a relatively new PC, a simpler and better-organized migration process is worth the nominal price of Laplink&#8217;s PCmover Windows 7 Upgrade Assistant.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>At a glance, the most obvious physical improvements on today&#8217;s digital cameras compared with those bought five years ago are slimmer size and larger LCD viewing screens. Other than that, they don&#8217;t look a whole lot different. </p>
<p>But this week, I tested two physical features that I&#8217;ve never seen on digital cameras. </p>

<p>I used the $430 Nikon Coolpix S1000pj (<a href="http://nikonusa.com">nikonusa.com</a>), which has a mini projector built right into the camera itself. This extra characteristic lets you take pictures and, by pressing a button on the camera, project them onto any nearby surface, in old-school slideshow style. The projected image can measure up to 40 inches, growing or shrinking as you walk away from or toward the surface onto which the images are projected.</p>
<p>I also tried the $350 Samsung DualView TL225, which had two LCD viewing screens—including one on the front side. This front screen lets the subjects of the photograph see how they look as the photo is being captured, raising the concept of instant gratification to a new level. The outward-facing LCD can also display a smiley face or cartoon animations to encourage children to smile. It also can be used to display a timer&#8217;s countdown clock so you know exactly when the photo will be taken.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Technical Advances</h5>
<p>These two compact cameras also feature less obvious technical advances that aren&#8217;t quite as eye-catching as a built-in projector or dual LCD screens. </p>
<p>Each camera can capture photographs with over 12-megapixel resolutions, and the Nikon and Samsung have 5x and 4.6x wide-angle zoom lenses, respectively. </p>
<p>Both cameras have built-in automatic scene-detecting capability, meaning they can analyze a scene to determine which shooting mode would work best. And they allow the user to edit images directly on the camera like brightening an image or rotating a photo.</p>
<p>The Nikon sticks to one traditional 2.7-inch LCD screen with separate buttons that control functions like menu, timer, deleting and playback. And, like many digicams, it accepts a SecureDigital (SD) memory card.</p>

<p>In somewhat unusual fashion, the Samsung requires a tiny microSD memory card. The viewing screen on the back of the Samsung is a generous 3.5-inch touch LCD that covers close to an entire side of the camera; the front-side LCD is 1.5 inches.</p>
<p>I focused my testing on the unique physical features of each camera: the Nikon&#8217;s built-in projector and the Samsung&#8217;s two LCD screens. I tried them out over the course of a week and used them in real-life situations including at a birthday party and at the Army 10-Miler, an annual run in Washington, D.C. </p>
<p>When the Nikon&#8217;s projector isn&#8217;t in use, it functions like a regular camera—albeit an expensive one at $430. Nikon says this price is largely due to the cost of its built-in projector. Until now, most people who wanted portable, mini projectors bought them as standalone products; for example, the Pico Pocket Projector from Optoma Technology Inc. is listed for $230 online at Best Buy (BBY).</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Subway Show</h5>
<p>I took the Nikon Coolpix S1000pj along to the Army 10-Miler, capturing photos of runners as they ran near the National Mall. Later on, while I waited with hundreds of people to get on the D.C. Metro subway system, a friend and I looked through photos from the day by projecting the camera&#8217;s images onto a concrete wall.</p>
<p>At first, passersby thought the slideshow images were put there by the race organizers, and they commented about how neat it was that the race images already were posted for everyone to see.</p>
<p>The D.C. Metro was an ideal spot to use the Nikon&#8217;s projector because of its low light and white concrete walls. Outdoors, the projected images weren&#8217;t quite as easy to see. </p>
<p>I also used the projector in a house and in my office, setting it on a table and turning off the lights for the best view. A tiny remote comes with the camera if you want to sit back and give your friends and family a slideshow. Videos taken with the camera also will play in video format.</p>
<p>To start the projector, I pressed a button on the top ledge of the camera, which immediately covered the lens and turned on the projector&#8217;s bright light. A slider button adjusts focus. The image size can be as small as five inches and as large as 40 inches, and it will project from about six feet away. Nikon says the camera&#8217;s projector will work for an hour before its battery runs out.</p>

<h5 class="subhed">Surprise, Surprise</h5>
<p>The $350 Samsung DualView TL225 is black with an accent color that comes in purple or orange. Its front-side LCD screen isn&#8217;t visible when the camera is turned off, making for a surprising experience when you take pictures of friends who can suddenly see themselves. </p>
<p>A similar but slightly lower-quality and less-expensive version of this camera is available in the $300 Samsung DualView TL220. This camera&#8217;s back LCD screen is a half-inch smaller than the TL225&#8217;s and not nearly as bright. Other notable differences include the TL220&#8217;s plastic casing compared with the TL225&#8217;s aluminum.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Clowns in Action</h5>
<p>This front LCD performs various functions in addition to showing people what they look like. A scene called Children puts animated cartoon clowns on the outer LCD in hopes of making a child smile for the camera. Another setting puts a large, yellow smiley face on this LCD when the shutter button is pressed down halfway. And when the camera&#8217;s timer is set, the outer display counts down, showing &#8220;3, 2, 1&#8243; until the image is captured. </p>
<p>I used this Samsung camera with two LCD screens to take pictures of friends who were all surprised and delighted when they saw themselves on the camera before the photo was taken. At a birthday party, the clown animations made even a group of people in their 20s laugh. </p>
<h5 class="subhed">Some Downsides</h5>
<p>The downside to this display screen is that it&#8217;s to the left of the camera&#8217;s lens, so if you&#8217;re taking a close-up shot of someone, they will appear in the photo like they&#8217;re glancing away slightly. </p>
<p>Another negative of this display is that it blacks out a split second before the photo is taken, so as long as you can hold the pose you saw of yourself on the screen, you&#8217;ll look fine. </p>
<p>It&#8217;s too early to know whether the innovations in these cameras will catch on, or be viewed over time as expensive gimmicks. </p>
<p>If these features become more common, hopefully the prices will come down and more consumers will be able to enjoy them.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Web browsing and email have comfortably migrated to mobile handhelds like the iPhone, BlackBerry and Palm (PALM) Pre. But many of these gadgets still cost a lot compared with cellphones that come free with renewed two-year contracts. </p>
<p>This week, I tested a new BlackBerry that costs less than any other BlackBerry did at launch—that is, if you buy it at the right place. Research in Motion&#8217;s (RIMM) BlackBerry Curve 8520 costs just $49 at Wal-Mart (WMT)—or $130 if you buy it at T-Mobile. Both prices are with two-year T-Mobile contracts.</p>

<p>The BlackBerry Curve has been one of the company&#8217;s most popular models. All iterations of the Curve combine a full QWERTY keyboard with a sleeker, more stylish look than bigger BlackBerry models like the Bold. And Curves typically cost less than their larger counterparts. In February, RIM refreshed its Curve brand for the first time in over two years with the 8900. This model was a real upgrade for Curve users, thanks to a brighter screen, faster performance and flatter keys that were easier to press. But six months later, it still costs as much as $199 (after rebate)—a steep asking price considering how some older 8300-series Curves are offered for around $50 with two-year contracts.</p>
<p>This newest $49 Curve 8520 lowers that price barrier. Its monthly T-Mobile service plans are also relatively inexpensive, starting at $55 for voice and data (not including MMS or SMS messaging). </p>
<p>It has two features never before seen on a BlackBerry. First, in place of a trackball or scroll wheel, this Curve uses a trackpad—a mini version of those used for mouse navigation on laptops.  </p>
<p>Second, it has designated physical buttons for playing, pausing and skipping ahead or back within media like videos and music. These rubbery buttons are built into the top edge of the BlackBerry.</p>
<p>I like the look of the Curve 8520—especially how the surface covering its screen extends down to the trackpad and its four surrounding buttons, giving it a smooth facade. It comes in two colors, black and frost (I used the black). Its low price, alone, will be enough to draw customers.  </p>
<p>But something about the way its keyboard and navigational keys worked felt cheap. Letter keys felt light and hollow while the Send, Menu, Escape and End keys around the trackpad clicked as I touched them.</p>
<p>The specifications of this BlackBerry tell the tale more specifically. Its 320&#215;240 pixel screen looks faded next to that of the Curve 8900, which is 480&#215;360. The blinking red indicator light at the top front corner of all BlackBerrys is a barely noticeable dot on this device. </p>
<p>And its camera is only two megapixels, not 3.2 megapixels like on the 8900, and is the first on a BlackBerry not to have a built-in flash. Also, it doesn&#8217;t run on the fast 3G network, though it uses Wi-Fi and automatically connects to trusted networks when in range of them. </p>
<p>First-time smartphone owners may not notice or care about these small details, but veteran BlackBerry users will pick up on them right away.</p>
<p>The Curve 8520 incorporates useful physical features found on previous models like right- and left-side convenience keys that work as handy shortcuts. It comes with a 1-gigabyte microSD memory card so users don&#8217;t have to buy their own before loading this device with photos, music and videos. </p>
<p>A strip of rubber runs around the Curve&#8217;s edge, covering up and smoothing over its convenience keys and volume buttons. This rugged addition isn&#8217;t visible from the front of the BlackBerry and it will probably go a long way in preventing nicks and dings. The word &#8220;Curve&#8221; is imprinted on the back of the BlackBerry, proudly branding this model.</p>
<p>The navigational trackpad is a cinch to use and moves the cursor up, down, right and left with very little effort. To select, one needs only to press in on the trackpad just as with the  trackball. Unlike the trackball, which rolls in place and can get stuck once in a great while, the trackpad doesn&#8217;t have any moving parts.</p>
<p>The physical media keys on the Curve 8520&#8217;s top edge work to instantly start playing media from any screen, like a music video that I watched. If you were to use your BlackBerry as your sole portable media player, these would be more valuable. And their position on the top of the Curve makes them easy to reach if the device is in a pocket or purse. </p>
<p>In my everyday usage scenarios, I usually forgot about these shortcut buttons and just used the trackpad to find and select a track or video for playing.  </p>
<p>BlackBerry&#8217;s App World store for applications that users can load onto the device still only offers 2,000 apps, compared to Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) 65,000. This means that for now, this new Curve can&#8217;t be enhanced with as many outside programs, which is a real downside.  And if you do download a lot of apps, or music or videos or photos, you may have to get a bigger memory card.</p>
<p>The Curve 8520 isn&#8217;t made for BlackBerry fanatics. But it&#8217;s a good entry-level BlackBerry for users who still haven&#8217;t let go of their basic cellphones. At Wal-Mart&#8217;s $49 price, it&#8217;s hard to beat.  </p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Last winter, I spent a good hour shopping online for the perfect black leather boots. I used tabbed browsing to open at least 25 Web pages, comparing each pair&#8217;s cost, heel height, zipper, leather and toe style. I emailed a friend with links to a few sites so I could get her opinion. And when I finally decided on the right pair, I dug through my email inbox to find a coupon code for 20% off.</p>
<p>This week I tested a solution that might have made my quest for boots a little simpler. Snipi, which became available as a free download from <a href="http://Snipi.com">Snipi.com</a> on Monday, helps you organize your online-shopping results by gathering, or &#8220;snipping,&#8221; product information from Web pages and saving the information to lists.</p>
<p>These lists are stored on your personalized Snipi page, where you can access them later. Snipi also can save photos and videos to lists. And it has a coordinating iPhone app that shows up-to-date versions of the lists created on the computer, so you can have them with you on the go.</p>

The Snipi Toolbar collects and displays the user&#8217;s online research.</div>
<p>To do all this, you use the Snipi Toolbar, a horizontal window that pops up within your browser so you never have to navigate away from the site where you&#8217;re shopping. If you see an item you like, simply drag and drop an image of it into the toolbar, where details about the item &#8212; including its title, price and image &#8212; are automatically filled in. If the item was previously snipped by another Snipi user, a description box will be filled with whatever that person wrote or pasted in from the product page; you can fill in the box yourself, too.</p>
<p>Snipi has a partnership with Shopzilla Inc., so the Snipi Toolbar also has comparison shopping built in: It displays links to Web sites where your snipped product, or products like it, can be found at lower prices.</p>
<p>One of the big drawbacks to Snipi is that it currently works only as a browser plug-in with Mozilla&#8217;s Firefox, not Microsoft&#8217;s (MSFT) Internet Explorer or Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) Safari. Snipi says it plans to introduce versions of its toolbar &#8212; though less functional ones &#8212; for IE and Safari by early to mid-June. Even so, downloading and installing a browser plug-in isn&#8217;t yet a routine thing for most people. And often, people who use plug-ins forget to keep them up-to-date.</p>
<p>Another downside to Snipi is that its comparison-pricing feature failed with apparel. The feature only really worked when used with &#8220;hard goods&#8221; like electronics, which are sold at retailers that participate in price-comparison networks. Yet Snipi still makes pricing suggestions for clothing and shoes, however irrelevant. For example, when I snipped a $150 Banana Republic dress, a link to $16 eye shadow sold at <a href="http://Sephora.com">Sephora.com</a> appeared in the Price Compare column. To reduce confusion, Snipi shouldn&#8217;t make such suggestions for apparel.</p>
<p>A handy feature built into the Snipi Toolbar lets you immediately share items via email or post them on Facebook, Twitter or Wordpress blogs. This would have been useful while I was shopping online for boots because I could have more quickly shared my finds with friends, rather than copying and pasting URLs into emails.</p>
<p>While browsing on <a href="http://BestBuy.com">BestBuy.com</a> (BBY), I found a Sony (SNE) Cybershot DSC-W220 with 12 megapixels and a 4x zoom lens for $199. Selecting a small icon in the Firefox browser&#8217;s bottom right corner, I opened the Snipi Toolbar and created a &#8220;Digicams&#8221; list, including the Sony. Snipi suggested alternative prices for this camera, including $159 for the same thing on <a href="http://Amazon.com">Amazon.com</a> (AMZN).</p>
<p>I got an early start on bathing-suit shopping by browsing Web sites for J. Crew, Victoria&#8217;s Secret and Macy&#8217;s. As expected, the price-comparison suggestions didn&#8217;t make sense. For one $58 Victoria&#8217;s Secret bathing suit, Snipi suggested a list of alternatives, including a $170 Kohler shower door, $203 Giorgio Armani glasses and an $82 corded telephone. I assure you that the bathing suit looked nothing like any of those items.</p>
<p>Confusing alternatives aside, I liked using the Snipi Toolbar as a place to gather my online research. It displayed images of items neatly lined up in a row, and when I selected an item, the description appeared. Someone like my sister, who is planning a wedding, might enjoy using the Snipi Toolbar for saving photos of various locations in a list she could call &#8220;Wedding Venues.&#8221; She could then share the entire list with me in one step. Or she could go visit some of the places and bring an iPhone with the Snipi app to see her list.</p>

<p>I tried the iPhone app, and it was a cinch to tap My Lists to see the online research I&#8217;d gathered. Here, as on the browser toolbar, visuals make it easy to glance through many products.</p>
<p>The toolbar can save various lists that you name and categorize into Shop, Photos or Videos, and these can be kept private, shared with friends or made public. Public lists are seen by all other users on <a href="http://Snipi.com">Snipi.com</a>, which is also a social-networking site. I wouldn&#8217;t use it as such, because I already rely on other social-networking outlets, but some people might.</p>
<p>Snipi, which uses a guessing algorithm to fill in details like a product&#8217;s price, says its toolbar will improve as more people use it. If you do a lot of research or online shopping or you simply want an online tool for saving images and videos from the Web, Snipi will work well for you. Its price-comparison suggestions need some improvement, but I felt more organized after using the Snipi Toolbar for a week&#8217;s worth of browsing.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Dipping a toe into the real-estate market these days can feel a lot like taking your car to the mechanic: If you don&#8217;t know what you&#8217;re doing and don&#8217;t trust the professional you hired, you may feel like someone is taking advantage of you. Thankfully, the Web&#8217;s ability to demystify intimidating topics has brought what was once considered insider real-estate knowledge to the masses.</p>
<p>This week, I tested <a href="http://Trulia.com" rel="external">Trulia.com</a>, a real-estate site that&#8217;s geared toward helping people who are ready to buy. Trulia combines a simple approach to real estate that anyone can grasp, with enough market stats to excite number-crunching types. It also offers a community where regular users can ask 200,000 real-estate professionals questions without fear of being hounded by agents because their emails are hidden.</p>

<p>Trulia has been around since 2005, but started out as a site that only posted local real-estate listings in California and New York. After expanding to the national market in 2006, it added other features like pricing heat maps (color-coded to indicate prices in an area), comparable listings, an online community and automatically generated newsfeeds about specific properties and areas. Last summer, Trulia went mobile with a free iPhone app that uses GPS to find nearby open houses.</p>
<p>Starting Wednesday, Trulia will offer CompareIt, a tool that lets users choose five properties for sale to directly compare with one another. Before now, Trulia just generated a list of comparable properties that sold or are for sale at the bottom of a listing.</p>
<p>I only used Trulia for a week, and I&#8217;m not a typical buyer since I was just looking &#8212; for now. But I got a lot out of the site, especially by browsing maps of neighborhoods that I know well (I&#8217;m picky about my preferred location) and asking questions of the Trulia community. Its iPhone app listed nearby open houses according to my search criteria and also worked on my iPod touch as long as I was in a Wi-Fi zone.</p>
<p>Another big plus to Trulia is Newsfeed, a list that shows up on the home page with content that&#8217;s automatically generated and personalized according to your past search locations. It is updated every day and spits out stats like the number of price reductions, open houses and new listings in an area. It shows an area&#8217;s average listing price, median sales price, number of foreclosures and average price per square foot, among other things. These data are a boon for people who don&#8217;t have the time or inclination to look this stuff up, and it aggregates the data into one intelligible, quick snapshot.</p>
<p>I found some flaws in Trulia, like the way it accidentally listed a property that was sold five months earlier. Trulia said it relies on partners for accurate listings, and those partners get their data from Multiple Listing Services or local brokers and agents, therefore Trulia&#8217;s data are only as good as its partners&#8217;. (At least one other real-estate site also accidentally listed the already-sold condo for sale.) Another problem occurred when I tried to use the CompareIt chart on Washington, D.C., properties; Trulia said the tool doesn&#8217;t work for D.C. due to a bug that it hopes to fix. Finally, properties saved on the iPhone app won&#8217;t transfer to your Trulia Web site account. The company says it hopes to fix the iPhone issue.</p>

<p>One of Trulia&#8217;s competitors is <a href="http://Zillow.com" rel="external">Zillow.com</a>, which displays its own price estimates for all houses in the U.S. (for sale or not) to give people an idea of the real-estate value in an area. The two sites are similar in some ways: Both show heat maps, display data about nearby schools, have mortgage calculators and use online communities to answer questions. But Zillow doesn&#8217;t offer a stat-packed Newsfeed or an iPhone app like Trulia.</p>
<p>After browsing through Trulia, I found a variety of properties that suited my target price range and location preferences. One place had lots of big windows and a renovated kitchen, according to the photos and information listed on its detailed Trulia Web page. A shortcut on the page made it easy for me to share this place with three friends to see what they thought. I even posed a question to the Trulia community about the property: Does this unit have a private entrance, or does it share an entrance with the five other units in the building?</p>
<p>Ironically, this was the property that was already sold, as I found out when a real-estate agent responded to my question. It took him just 15 minutes (Trulia says this is within five minutes of the average response time) to post a response saying that he was familiar with the listing and that the place sold five months earlier. Trulia has since updated this property&#8217;s status.</p>
<p>Other questions that I asked of the community were answered within 20 minutes. In one instance, I asked a general question about the best time of year to buy in Washington, D.C., and three real-estate agents responded almost immediately; two were from my area and offered their advice &#8212; and their services &#8212; but one from Florida chimed in simply to offer some encouragement. Each responder was clearly identified with a name, classification (i.e. real-estate pro) and photo. Within a couple hours, four more people responded.</p>
<p>These questions and answers are shared with everyone on Trulia, and I clicked on a thumbs-up icon to vote for the answer I found most helpful.</p>
<p>Email alerts can be set up through Trulia so you&#8217;re notified if a property you like dips below a certain price, or if there are new blog posts about certain categories like financing, crime or environmentally friendly properties.</p>
<p>The CompareIt tool worked to see how properties (excluding those in D.C.) stacked up against one another, up to five at a time. These charts arm people with more statistics and (likely) more negotiating power.</p>
<p>The real-estate world can be intimidating, now more than ever. Though sites like Trulia won&#8217;t solve this problem completely, they could make the weighty decision of buying a house a little bit easier.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>When Pure Digital Technologies Inc. introduced its Flip point-and-shoot camcorder a year ago, it dramatically simplified video recording. The Flip measured the size of a small digital still camera, cost less than $150 and its videos could be emailed in one quick process. Consumers gobbled up the tiny, nonintimidating device.</p>
<p>But to the style-conscious set, the Flip looked like a clunky Fisher-Price toy &#8212; especially when compared with a sleek, new iPod or more-sophisticated digital cameras &#8212; and was too thick to comfortably slip into a pocket. Last fall, Pure Digital introduced an enhanced version: the Flip Video Ultra, but its biggest aesthetic difference was new orange, pink and green colors.</p>

<p>Today, the company will begin sales of its $180 Flip Video Mino (pronounced &#8220;minnow&#8221;), the hippest offering yet from Pure Digital. This 60-minute Flip includes many firsts for the company: rechargeable batteries; touch-sensitive buttons rather than old-school, push-down buttons; and a thinner build that measures 40% smaller, overall. The Flip Mino is also the first one in the family to enable publishing to MySpace (NWS); prior software limited Web-site sharing to YouTube (GOOG) and AOL (TWX) Video.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve been using a glossy, black Flip Mino (it also comes in white) for the past two weeks and it looks much cooler than older models. Its newly positioned USB adapter pops up from the top of the camera like something from a Swiss Army Knife. The Mino offers features such as the ability to lock the delete button, so no one accidentally deletes your videos, and mute all camera sounds, so as to record silently during quiet moments like wedding ceremonies or speeches.</p>
<p>I brought it along with me almost everywhere I went because of its small size and light weight, even fitting it into a thin clutch purse with a cellphone and BlackBerry (RIMM). I used the Mino in various situations ranging from bright, scenic outdoor settings to indoors while eating dinner in a candle-lit restaurant. Overall, I was pleased with the sound and picture quality of the Mino, and I found its built-in software, which automatically starts when the camera plugs into your Mac (AAPL) or Windows (MSFT) PC, to be a pleasure to use.</p>

<p>It took just a few minutes to trim excess footage from my videos before saving them to my computer or sharing them with friends and family. Another way to share videos from the Flip Mino is via Pure Digital&#8217;s server, which sends emails with embedded video links, saving upload and download time on both ends. Though I didn&#8217;t publish any of my videos on a public Web site, AOL, MySpace and YouTube were just one step away.</p>
<p>The Flip Mino&#8217;s touch buttons, while stylish, were difficult to use at first. I missed the tactile feel of physical buttons as I tried to hold this small video camera and press the zoom buttons using just one hand. The new, touch-sensitive buttons weren&#8217;t as satisfying and stable to use, and I pressed them accidentally more than a few times. For instance, the Zoom Out button is directly below Record, making it easy to mistakenly touch it. After about a week of using the Mino, I grew more accustomed to using these new touch buttons, but it shouldn&#8217;t take so long to make the adjustment.</p>
<p>Just looking at the Flip Mino&#8217;s fresh new exterior makes it hard not to think about the things that this redesigned camcorder is still lacking, like a larger viewing screen (the Mino screen is 1.5 inches, no larger than that of the Flip Ultra), high definition video and wireless sharing capability. These features would likely raise the price and/or tax the battery, and many users of the Flip flock to it for its low price and simplicity. Still, Pure Digital says that it will offer HD video and a larger screen on a product within a year, and is looking into features that might include wireless transferring.</p>
<p>I grew fond of the Mino&#8217;s rechargeable battery. Whenever I plugged this gadget into my computer to transfer videos, my Mino charged up via USB without me having to think about it. A full charge lasts four hours and recharging a dead battery takes about three hours.</p>
<p>Pure Digital says that the sound quality and lighting are improved in this model. Like previous models, this Flip records in 640&#215;480 pixels at 30 frames per second.</p>

<p>The Mino didn&#8217;t have a problem with lighting in most situations; indeed it did a nice job of capturing images of my family sitting around a table in a restaurant with little more than candlelight to brighten the picture. It doesn&#8217;t use a flash or a built-in light, but instead uses automatic sensors to adjust to various levels of light.</p>
<p>This svelte camcorder seemed to handle noise more evenly than I remembered in prior Flip models. It didn&#8217;t make my voice sound unbearably louder than everyone else&#8217;s, even though I was closest to the camera&#8217;s microphone, yet it managed to detect voices across the room. I did have some trouble on a windy day: While recording a quick video of a golf course in San Diego, wind audibly muffled my voice during a few moments in the video.</p>
<p>Along with the delete-lock and sounds-off settings, this Mino has a few other tricks up its sleeve. Each of the touch-sensitive buttons is designed to glow only when usable, so as to better help people who might not know which buttons to press while using this camcorder. For example, only the zoom buttons glow while recording since the other buttons (volume, play/pause and delete) can&#8217;t function in this setting.</p>
<p>Shortcuts built into each button provide more functions: Holding the play/pause button down will set the playback mode to play all videos on the Mino; holding the seek ahead or seek back buttons while watching a video will fast-forward by seconds within that video; pressing the record button as the camera starts up opens up the settings menu.</p>
<p>In conjunction with the Flip Mino&#8217;s introduction Wednesday, prices of the former Flip Ultra model will drop to $150 for the 60-minute model. The Flip Ultra 30-minute model will be phased out, as will the Flip Classic, which will cost $130 for a 60-minute unit.</p>
<p>Though the Flip Mino&#8217;s touch-sensitive buttons look great, they aren&#8217;t as functional as they needed to be. But if you really want a sleek, hip-looking gadget, you&#8217;ll learn to adjust to these new buttons. No matter which Flip you choose, Pure Digital&#8217;s software changes the way people capture and share videos, and that&#8217;s a great thing.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>A few weeks ago, I received a dreaded phone call at 8:30 a.m. telling me he wasn&#8217;t going to make it. The &#8220;he&#8221; in this case was my car, and the bearer of bad news was my mechanic. My 1994 Saab bit the dust when its timing belt broke, and after discussions about the cost of the repair versus the value of the car, I accepted the fact that I&#8217;d need to start looking at buying another vehicle.</p>

<p>I headed online to start researching (I was looking for a used car) but was overwhelmed by an avalanche of information. Everyone seemed to have something to say about cars, whether in blogs, community forums, editorial reviews, Kelley Blue Book values, Carfax reports or local dealer sites. As I discussed my findings with friends and family, more people than not were surprised to hear about the variety of research and price comparisons available online.</p>
<p>This week&#8217;s column is an overview of sites that may help you or someone you know browse for a new or used car on the Web. I used sites ranging from trusted resources like <a href="http://ConsumerReports.org" rel="external">ConsumerReports.org</a> to search engine tools like Yahoo Autos. This column can&#8217;t possibly mention every car-searching resource on the Web; rather, it&#8217;s just a taste of what&#8217;s available.</p>
<p><a href="http://Edmunds.com" rel="external">Edmunds.com</a> and ConsumerReports.org both feature informative data on a number of new and used vehicles. Edmunds is a free site specifically geared toward cars, including an online magazine for enthusiasts called Inside Line and a Web forum for discussions about automobiles called CarSpace. I used various tools on Edmunds.com, including one that estimates the true cost to own a specific car over time. I especially enjoyed reading an article titled &#8220;Confessions of a Car Salesman,&#8221; which proved uncanny in predicting a range of tricks and techniques the salespeople used when I first visited a car dealership.</p>
<p>Edmunds offers a four-step pricing system, which includes getting quotes from dealers, and a payment calculator, which estimates monthly payments. Edmunds teams up with <a href="http://AutoTrader.com" rel="external">AutoTrader.com</a> to help perform searches for certified pre-owned or used cars online.</p>
<p>Consumer Reports covers products as well as cars but keeps much of its most useful data behind a Web-site subscription, which costs $26 annually or $5.95 monthly (magazine subscribers can pay a discounted price of $19 a year). You need this subscription to access CR&#8217;s respected ratings and certain sections of its Web forums. These ratings were helpful to me, as they assessed numerous aspects of specific car models, including trouble spots by year, performance, safety and fuel economy.</p>
<p>CR also offers valuable lists such as &#8220;All Recommended Cars,&#8221; &#8220;Best and Worst Used Cars&#8221; and &#8220;Reliable Used Cars by Price.&#8221; A car-buying calculator is an asset to this site that helps you decide whether it would be smarter to buy or lease a vehicle.</p>
<p>Google, Yahoo and AOL all present special search-results pages when you search for a specific car for sale, using drop-down menus and various ways to sort results. Google Base for automobiles, found by selecting &#8220;Vehicles&#8221; from <a href="http://www.google.com/base" rel="external">www.google.com/base</a>, is a list of data submitted to Google. Drop-down menus help broaden or narrow results by sorting the data according to certain attributes, such as make or price. Vehicle-search results can be viewed in one of three formats: List View, Table View or Map View &#8212; an illustration of each car&#8217;s location in relationship to a Zip Code. I found Table View most useful because it organized data in smart, spreadsheet-like displays so I could quickly skim through columns listing price, color, amenities and mileage.</p>

<p>But not all car searches within Google Base returned the same drop-down-menu options for sorting. In a few instances, I couldn&#8217;t sort my search results by model year. Google Base does show the date on which each car was listed.</p>
<p>Yahoo Autos, found at <a href="http://www.autos.yahoo.com" rel="external">www.autos.yahoo.com</a>, teamed up with <a href="http://Cars.com" rel="external">Cars.com</a> to offer richer content, including a Car Finder feature that helps people narrow down what type of new car they might like according to price, driving style and fuel (type and economy). Yahoo even tries to answer car questions with its Yahoo Answers Q&amp;A tool, which lets people submit questions. I found user reviews on this site, as well as expert reviews provided by <a href="http://NewCarTestDrive.com" rel="external">NewCarTestDrive.com</a>, an auto-review site.</p>
<p>The used-car section in Yahoo Autos reminded me of Google with its drop-down menus and results that displayed in list or map views. List view shows plenty of information in one glance, including an image of the car for sale and the number of additional available photos. From this list, users can link directly to view or order Carfax reports or email the dealer, saving time wasted on excess mouse clicks and browsing.</p>
<p>AOL Autos, found at <a href="http://autos.aol.com" rel="external">http://autos.aol.com</a>, does a nice job of integrating Web 2.0 features such as pop-up menus that appear within a page rather than in an entirely new Web page. Vehicle-search results are found by entering a few criteria for a new or used car, and used-car results can be further narrowed by adding or subtracting desired specifics listed on the far left of the screen. Some specs include model type, engine, year or extras like heated seats or a sunroof.</p>
<p>This site can also condense numerous used-car listings into one graph that illustrates car prices in relationship to mileage or year. Selecting any point on the graph reveals a short description of a vehicle&#8217;s location, price and mileage. For new cars, AOL Autos offers lengthy expert reviews from NewCarTestDrive.com, as well as user reviews.</p>
<p>Both Yahoo Autos and AOL Autos walk users through steps to get price quotes from dealers for new cars.</p>
<p><a href="http://Carfax.com" rel="external">Carfax.com</a> provides car-history reports using vehicle-identification numbers, or VINs. For a $30 fee, used-car buyers can use Carfax.com for 30 days. This report shows a vehicle&#8217;s history such as if it was a rental or not, how many different owners it had, how long each owner possessed the vehicle and where it came from. Tips pop up within these reports, including one that warned me about &#8220;curbstoning,&#8221; a term that describes an individual without a dealer&#8217;s license looking to sell a number of cars by posing as a private seller.</p>
<p>As can be expected, many newspaper Web sites offer automobile sections that display digitized classified ads, so be sure to check your local paper&#8217;s Web site.</p>
<p>At the end of the day, test-driving a car will be a true test as to whether or not you like it &#8212; no matter how much research you&#8217;ve done online. But knowing your stuff before you visit a dealership can save money and time.</p>

<p>Last year, when <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=msft'>Microsoft</a> Corp. introduced its Zune music player to take on Apple&#8217;s iPod juggernaut, the software giant struck out. While the Zune had a good user interface and a larger screen than the iPod, it was bigger and boxier, with clumsier controls, weaker battery life and more complex software. Its companion online music store had a much smaller catalog, a more complicated purchase process and no videos for sale. And the Zune&#8217;s most innovative feature, built-in Wi-Fi networking, was nearly useless and added little value to the players, which sold so poorly that Apple barely noticed.</p>

<p>But Microsoft is nothing if not persistent, and this week, the company is back with a second, improved round of Zunes. The chunky, older 30-gigabyte model remains in the lineup, but it&#8217;s joined by a slimmed-down full-size Zune that holds 80 gigabytes, and by a much smaller model that holds four or eight gigabytes. Prices range from $150 to $250. The 80-gigabyte Zune is available only in black, and the others come in red, green, black and pink.</p>
<p>We&#8217;ve been testing these new Zunes and find them to be notably better than last year&#8217;s entry. They are smaller, lighter and more attractive, and they include three big improvements. First is a new controller, called a Zune Pad, that combines buttons with a touch pad for scrolling. Second is a completely overhauled, simpler PC-software program and online store, the Zune Marketplace. Third is expanded usability of the built-in Wi-Fi, which allows you to synchronize your Zune and your PC without plugging in a cable and makes sharing songs between Zunes &#8212; its only function last year &#8212; slightly better.</p>

<p>Unfortunately for Microsoft, Apple hasn&#8217;t been standing still, either. It now has its own large-screen, wireless model, the iPod Touch, with a radical &#8220;multi-touch&#8221; interface like the iPhone&#8217;s. The screen on the Touch is larger than the one on the bigger Zunes and is much sharper. Its Wi-Fi allows you to browse the Web, watch YouTube videos and even buy music without a PC &#8212; none of which is possible on a Zune &#8212; though the Touch is $50 more and holds much less content than the new full-size Zune.</p>
<p>Microsoft&#8217;s new Zunes are directly aimed at the iPod Classic, Apple&#8217;s full-size, high-capacity model, and the iPod nano, its compact version. But, here again, Apple has been on the move. The 80-gigabyte Classic, which costs the same as the 80-gigabyte Zune, is slimmer than the Zune and has a flashy new interface, if a smaller screen. And the eight-gigabyte nano, which costs the same as the eight-gigabyte Zune, now plays videos and is much smaller &#8212; yet has a larger screen. Neither of these iPods includes Wi-Fi.</p>
<p>In addition, Apple has spiffed up its iTunes software, adding various features, including the addictive Cover Flow, which allows you to flip through all your albums with just a flick of the mouse. Cover Flow also shows up on the nano, the Classic and the Touch. Even the new Zune PC software has no interface as compelling.</p>
<p>And Apple still trounces Microsoft in the selection of media it sells. The iTunes store offers more than six million songs, about double what the Zune Marketplace offers, and dwarfs Microsoft&#8217;s selection of Podcasts and music videos, as well. Plus, Zune Marketplace still doesn&#8217;t sell any TV shows, movies or audiobooks, while iTunes does.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Radio Feature</h5>
<p>Overall, we still don&#8217;t think the Zune line beats the iPods and iTunes. However, one of the Zunes, the full-size Zune 80, could give the iPod some competition, especially among new digital-player buyers who aren&#8217;t invested in the iTunes ecosystem. For the same price, it offers a significantly larger screen (albeit with the same resolution), wireless syncing and sharing, and a built-in FM radio &#8212; an existing Zune feature that the iPod lacks.</p>
<p>We tested the $249.99 80-gigabyte Zune 80 against Apple&#8217;s iPod Classic with the same capacity and price and then did the same for the $199.99 eight-gigabyte Zune 8 compared with the iPod nano equivalent.</p>
<p>We didn&#8217;t get a chance to test the battery life on the new Zune models or that of the iPod Classic and nano. But Microsoft concedes that unless you turn off Wi-Fi &#8212; one of the Zune&#8217;s key advantages &#8212; its claimed battery life is lower than Apple&#8217;s claims. Microsoft estimates as many as 19 and 24 hours of music playback with Wi-Fi on for the eight- and 80-gigabyte, respectfully. Apple claims as many as 24 hours and 30 hours, respectively, on the competitive models, which lack Wi-Fi. In the past, Apple has generally understated its battery claims, while last year, Microsoft overstated its claims.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Easier Navigating</h5>
<p>On both Zunes, the front hosts just three buttons: the Zune Pad, a back button and a Play/Pause button. Its menus are divided into Music, Videos, Pictures, Social, Radio, Podcasts and Settings; navigating through this menu list and hundreds of songs is made easier with the Zune Pad&#8217;s touch functions. To zip through a list, we flicked a finger up or down. The top, bottom, right and left sides each work as individual buttons, as does the center of the Zune Pad.</p>
<p>The user interface is mainly unchanged from last year and still works very well, requiring an economical number of steps for each action.</p>
<p>Zune&#8217;s black, red and green colors are fine, but rather masculine &#8212; the latter reminded us of camouflage. But the pink was a glaring shade more appropriate for My Little Pony; it looks like an afterthought.</p>
<p>We initiated wireless syncs with the Zune software program, plugging the player into our PC the first time but leaving it disconnected each time after that. Wireless syncing took a little longer than with a cord and must be initiated by the user from within the player&#8217;s settings. One frustration: Presumably to save battery life, the Zune disconnects from the network periodically and then must reconnect the next time you want to use the Wi-Fi. Also, the Zune can&#8217;t wirelessly sync if you&#8217;re at a public hot spot that requires you to log in or pay.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Intelligent Syncing</h5>
<p>This year&#8217;s Zunes also introduce a concept Microsoft intends to build on: intelligent, or automated, syncing. If you have your Zune set to sync only some of your music, not all, and drag an artist&#8217;s name onto the Zune icon in the PC software, the software will thereafter automatically sync every song you add to the PC from that artist. Microsoft believes many people would welcome such automation.</p>

<p>The Zune&#8217;s FM radio is well-designed and easy to use. Using the Zune Pad to flick left or right along the station grid, our Zunes detected numerous static-free stations, and we marked certain stations as presets by holding down the center button. Each radio&#8217;s digital data appeared on-screen, including the artist and song title.</p>
<p>We shared songs between our Zunes, beaming tracks from the 80-gigabyte to the eight-gigabyte and vice versa. A wirelessly shared song can be played by the recipient three times whenever they choose. Microsoft has removed the three-day time limit that applied last year. A minute of playing time, or half the duration of a song (whatever comes first) constitutes one play. At first, it took our Zunes a couple tries to recognize one another, even though they were both set to share music. And we noted that invitations to accept shared music don&#8217;t include any information about the music, so you could get stuck downloading an annoying tune or one you already own.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Photo Finish</h5>
<p>Photos and videos looked great on the Zunes &#8212; about as good as they do on the comparable iPod nanos and better than on the iPod Classic because that iPod model&#8217;s screen is much smaller than its Zune counterpart&#8217;s. However, album art, which is often lower-resolution than normal photos, looked grainier on the big Zune than on the big iPod. And none of the Zunes came close to the stunning photo and video quality offered on the iPod Touch and the iPhone.</p>
<p>We didn&#8217;t get to test Zune&#8217;s a la carte point system for buying and downloading tracks because it wasn&#8217;t up and running yet. Neither were music-video downloads. We each had Zune Pass accounts, which work like subscriptions. If the Zune account stops, all content acquired during the user&#8217;s subscription is lost.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Album Focus</h5>
<p>Navigating through Zune&#8217;s software can be a tad confusing. Four categories at the top left of your PC&#8217;s screen are meant to help: Collection, Device, Marketplace and Social. Collection shows your downloaded or owned content and focuses a bit too much on albums, which are becoming less significant with the ever-growing popularity of digital music. One example of this is the Collection&#8217;s default center panel shows album art sorted by date added.</p>
<p>Zune Marketplace&#8217;s artist pages really shine. Upon selecting a band or artist, a rich, full-screen background image of that group or person appears on the page with lists of songs floating atop the image. Various still photos of each artist are included; we found 10 for Mary Chapin Carpenter and 15 for Nelly Furtado.</p>

<p>After listening to a Yo-Yo Ma album in her music collection, Katie wanted to download additional performances of the famous cellist from the Zune Marketplace online store. But, unlike iTunes, Zune&#8217;s software program doesn&#8217;t offer a way to link directly from your Collection to Marketplace for buying more of a certain artist or another song from an album you already own.</p>
<p>Another navigational hiccup in Zune&#8217;s Marketplace is its inability to bookmark searches. If, after searching in Zune&#8217;s online store to buy and download more Yo-Yo Ma, Katie looked in her Collection to see which piece she played last or liked most, then returned to the online store, her Marketplace store search would be lost and she&#8217;d need to start over. The iTunes store bookmarks your place during searches, allowing you to navigate through any other part of iTunes before returning to the idle search.</p>
<p>Zune tries to compensate for this glitch by identifying songs in the online store that you already own &#8212; either bought through Zune Marketplace or from other sources &#8212; with an &#8220;In Collection&#8221; label so you don&#8217;t accidentally buy content you already own. Likewise, if a song in your Collection is already synched to be on the player, a tiny Zune icon appears beside that song title.</p>
<p>Unlike iTunes, Zune software can&#8217;t create smart playlists. And it only offers two views, Browse and List, versus three in iTunes: Cover Flow, lists, and lists with album art.</p>
<p>Microsoft has greatly improved the Zune hardware and software this time. But it seems to be competing with Apple&#8217;s last efforts, not its newest ones.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>With help from the Web and a little extra cash, almost everything becomes more convenient. Groceries are delivered directly to homes using services like Peapod, rental cars are available in easier-to-reach locations using Zipcar and movie tickets are bought in advance through Fandango.</p>
<p>But how much is too much when it comes to shelling out a little more for convenience, and are you really getting what you pay for? This week, I tested what could be thought of as the ultimate convenience: a box that plugs into your television and Internet connection, letting you download movies whenever you want to watch them. The box costs $399 and doesn&#8217;t include the price of movies, which must be rented or purchased for fees as high as $4 or $20 each, respectively.</p>
<p>This box, called Vudu, comes from a Silicon Valley company of the same name (<a href="http://www.vudu.com" rel="external">www.vudu.com</a>). Vudu&#8217;s biggest strengths are its easy setup, good picture quality and simple user interface, easily navigated using a scroll-wheel remote control.</p>

<p>If the director yelled &#8220;Cut!&#8221; right here, Vudu would be a box-office smash. But actually using this device is just one problem after another. For starters, though Vudu says it has relationships with the major Hollywood studios, many of the 5,000 titles it offers don&#8217;t seem to be popular by mainstream standards. Lots of them are old or obscure. For instance, you won&#8217;t find any of the &#8220;Pirates of the Caribbean&#8221; movies, but how about a 1984 sci-fi/fantasy movie called &#8220;The Ice Pirates,&#8221; instead?</p>
<p>If you do find a movie that you&#8217;d like to watch, you must have a bandwidth speed of at least two megabits per second to download it instantly; millions of broadband homes have slower connections than that. Vudu offers to measure your bandwidth on its home page before you buy it. I tested Vudu for a week on a typical home-type DSL line, and my connection only clocks about 1.5 Mbps, so it took me about 45 minutes to download each movie.</p>
<p>While Vudu&#8217;s $399 price tag might take some getting used to, its fees for buying or renting each movie could be harder to swallow after a month&#8217;s worth of use: as much as $80 if you bought one top-tier movie a week. Worse, you have to pay in advance. Rather than charging your credit card on a pay-as-you-go basis, Vudu customers must choose a $20, $50 or $100 amount at setup from which movie fees are deducted. When your account hits $0, the amount selected at setup is charged and the debit process begins again.</p>
<p>On top of all this, Vudu relies on a peer-to-peer network system for faster downloading. So, essentially, this company is using your bandwidth to help it save money it would have otherwise spent on its own servers and bandwidth.</p>
<p>I set up Vudu in a snap, plugging it into three things: a wall outlet, the back of a high-definition Sony Bravia television and an Ethernet cord. Wireless connections won&#8217;t work with Vudu without a special &#8220;bridge&#8221; or a power-line adapter. Once Vudu turned on, a friendly voice guided me through setting it up, and I got started in minutes.</p>
<p>Vudu&#8217;s home screen is broken down into five menus: Find Movies, New Releases, My Movies, My Wish List and Info &amp; Settings. I used the tiny remote, which fits perfectly in a hand, and rolled through menus using its scroll wheel. This wheel can be pressed down to select something, saving me from glancing down at the buttons. Also, Vudu uses an RF (radio frequency) antenna so you don&#8217;t have to point the remote at it.</p>
<p>In Find Movies, I looked through 18 genres, including biography, romance, family and historical. A sorting feature can filter movies by release date, MPAA rating, critics&#8217; rating, studio, availability to rent and availability to own. An on-screen alphabet can be used to type in names of actors, directors or movie titles; the scroll wheel speeds up this process.</p>
<p>Parental controls, which are only accessible with a special code, can be set to block a child from buying or renting movies with certain ratings.</p>
<p>Vudu likes to think of itself as the instant-gratification alternative to running to the video store. But not many people I know still go to Blockbuster for a DVD; instead, they use mail-delivery services like Netflix. Compared with the 85,000 titles offered by Netflix, the selection at Vudu is pretty slim. A more similar comparison might be Amazon&#8217;s Unbox for TiVo, which has slightly less than 5,000 movies.</p>
<p>Though I couldn&#8217;t find numerous titles, I did discover plenty of movies I&#8217;d never heard of. A search for last year&#8217;s &#8220;Casino Royale&#8221; returned Robert DeNiro&#8217;s &#8220;Casino&#8221; from 1995, as well as two Asian films, &#8220;Casino Tycoon&#8221; and &#8220;Casino Tycoon II.&#8221; Since I never saw Helen Mirren&#8217;s &#8220;The Queen,&#8221; I tried to find her Oscar-winning performance on Vudu. But the closest I came to royalty were &#8220;Barbarella: Queen of the Galaxy,&#8221; an alternative name for the cheesy 1968 Jane Fonda sci-fi flick, and &#8220;Prom Queen,&#8221; which fell under the Gay and Lesbian category. I tried to laugh this off by watching Steve Carell&#8217;s &#8220;Evan Almighty.&#8221; But typing &#8220;E-V-A&#8230;&#8221; into a title search only returned &#8220;Deliver Us From Eva,&#8221; an R-rated 2003 comedy starring LL Cool J.</p>
<p>I searched and found the same three titles on Netflix, though Amazon Unbox only had &#8220;Evan Almighty.&#8221;</p>
<p>I downloaded two romantic comedies: &#8220;Music and Lyrics,&#8221; starring Hugh Grant, a $4 rental, and a Diane Keaton movie called &#8220;Because I Said So,&#8221; which I bought for $20. I also rented &#8220;Zodiac,&#8221; a suspense movie starring Jake Gyllenhaal, for $4. Movies that you own never expire, but rented flicks must be watched within 30 days and expire 24 hours after you start watching.</p>
<p>In the case of each movie, the original estimates for time to download were daunting; two started out by estimating &#8220;Available in a few hours&#8221; and one movie&#8217;s estimate read &#8220;Available in a few days.&#8221; But all three finished downloading in about 45 to 50 minutes. Only one movie can download at a time.</p>
<p>While watching movies, the remote&#8217;s scroll wheel can be used to fast forward or rewind scenes. Scrolling faster moves you farther ahead or back (the fastest jump moves you 30 minutes); the slowest scroll moves you ahead or back five seconds.</p>
<p>Vudu might cast a spell on users who don&#8217;t mind its poor selection and high-bandwidth requirement to deliver instant downloads. But for me, the convenience of Vudu is no convenience at all. As is, its lackluster selection, high prices and slow downloads make it more of a letdown than anything else.</p>
