			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Most people who aren&#8217;t familiar with Twitter are eager to list the reasons why they don&#8217;t use this social-networking service. It&#8217;s for narcissists. It&#8217;s for teenagers. It&#8217;s for people who have nothing better to do. It&#8217;s a forum for oversharing. While all of these things may be true in some cases, I find Twitter&#8217;s 140-character messaging network to be an incredibly useful tool in my everyday life.</p>
<p>I use Twitter as my personalized news feed by following people who &#8220;tweet&#8221; (write updates) about things that interest me. In one glance I can read White House correspondent Mark Knoller&#8217;s tweets about President Obama&#8217;s activities, a recipe tweeted by Martha Stewart and WSJ.com tweets with links to news stories. </p>

<p>But Twitter works best with a little help from its friends, namely those programs that are designed to make it more customized and useful with minimal work on the user&#8217;s behalf. Here&#8217;s a rundown of just some of these helpers. I&#8217;m focusing only on ones that run on your computer, either in Web browsers or as stand-alone programs. There is also a plethora of Twitter applications that work on mobile devices like the iPhone and BlackBerry, too many to go into here. A few Twitter programs let you lurk and read tweets without a Twitter account, but in most cases these programs require a Twitter user name and password so they can better organize tweets of the people whom you follow.</p>

<p>To get a Twitter account in the first place, you will need to sign up with a user name and password at <a href="http://Twitter.com">Twitter.com</a> and start following people—or subscribing to read someone&#8217;s updates. These may be friends or people you simply find interesting, like journalists whose work you read (my Twitter user name is kabster728). You can see whom one person follows, and then opt also to follow those same people and the people those people follow and so on. Though it&#8217;s possible to lock your account so it&#8217;s private, very few people do so because Twitter encourages open communication throughout the Web.</p>
<p>That said, you can always choose to block someone from following you or stop following someone&#8217;s Twitter feed. You can comment on a tweet by sending the person who wrote it an &#8220;at reply,&#8221; named because the reply starts with the &#8220;@&#8221; sign followed by the user name of the person to whom you are replying. You can also send direct messages to another Twitter user as long as he or she is following you.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">All-Purpose Programs</h5>
<p>TweetDeck and Seesmic are two programs that do a good job of filtering others&#8217; tweets and aiding the process of writing tweets. Both use Adobe Air, a tool that lets the program work in the background while continuously refreshing its content. This increases productivity because the programs can be set to display pop-up notifications whenever certain tweets appear. </p>
<p>TweetDeck (a free download at <a href="http://TweetDeck.com">TweetDeck.com</a>) organizes tweets into columns that you designate, such as a column of all tweets that mention your name, your company&#8217;s name or the word &#8220;Wimbledon.&#8221; It eases the process of writing tweets by building in ways to shorten Web links, post photos or translate a tweet into one of 35 languages. TweetDeck also integrates with Facebook so that one TweetDeck column displays your Facebook friends&#8217; latest status updates.</p>
<p>The most recent version of TweetDeck enables synchronization of accounts with an email and password. This means that you can download TweetDeck on several computers, log into your account and see the same columns and settings on all platforms. The new version also includes fun extras like search within each column and the option to show how many followers a user has by displaying that number below his or her tweets.</p>
<p>Seesmic (a free download at <a href="http://seesmic.com">seesmic.com</a>) is another all-purpose Twitter program. It works much like TweetDeck, but has a few differences. Seesmic also integrates with Facebook, but does so in a more robust way, showing when Facebook friends share photos or Web links and letting you comment on or &#8220;like&#8221; someone&#8217;s status; TweetDeck only shows Facebook status updates.</p>
<p>Seesmic lets you drag photos into a small window for sharing via Twitter. But its overall look isn&#8217;t as visually appealing as TweetDeck&#8217;s and it lacks some of TweetDeck&#8217;s extra features.</p>
<p>Twhirl (<a href="http://twhirl.org">twhirl.org</a>) also runs on Adobe Air, working in the background as you use your computer for other activities. Like the aforementioned programs, it also enables easier tweeting with built-in tools for photo uploading and URL shrinking. Unlike TweetDeck and Seesmic, which focus on Twitter and Facebook, Twhirl enables logging into four types of accounts: Twitter, FriendFeed, Laconi.ca and Identica. But Twhirl shows only one category at a time, like a screen of replies, rather than showing all of these categories at a glance like TweetDeck and Seesmic.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Browser Power</h5>
<p>Some Twitter programs run in browsers, not as stand-alone programs. This saves you from downloading a program on multiple computers because you can simply log into your account on any computer using its Web browser. But these programs won&#8217;t use the helpful pop-up notifications of Adobe Air; instead, you will need to look in your browser to see new information—like opening Twitter.com.</p>
<p>One such browser-based program is HootSuite (<a href="http://HootSuite.com">HootSuite.com</a>), which uses an owl as its mascot. HootSuite&#8217;s unique features include its ability to set tweets to send at a later time or date, giving your followers the illusion that you are tweeting when you&#8217;re actually not, and a built-in statistic-tracker to measure how many people opened a link you posted using its ow.ly URL shortener. Like Twhirl, HootSuite shows only certain categories at a time rather than one overall glance at many categories of tweets.</p>
<p>Twitter.com is getting better, though it&#8217;s still weak compared with these other programs. I&#8217;ve used add-ons in my Firefox browser to enhance Twitter, and one called Power Twitter is like steroids for Twitter.com, adding photo uploading and link shortening right into the Web site. It also makes friends&#8217; tweets richer by displaying details about any Web links that they share. </p>
<h5 class="subhed">No Sign-Up Necessary</h5>
<p>If you&#8217;re just curious about Twitter and want to see what people are talking about without signing up, try sites that are open to everyone. <a href="http://Twitterfall.com">Twitterfall.com</a>, for example, displays tweets about trending Twitter topics and custom search results in a waterfall-like visual with new tweets spilling over the top every half second. <a href="http://TwitterVision.com">TwitterVision.com</a> cleverly displays tweets around the world on a global map as they are posted, showing where the tweets are from, geographically. </p>
<p>Twitter isn&#8217;t limited to Twitter.com, and I wouldn&#8217;t likely use it as much were it not for programs like the ones I&#8217;ve mentioned and others. So give them a try and find out what makes Twitter useful for you. </p>

But many people don&#8217;t know what to do with these Webcams or how to use them for videoconferencing with other people. Some don&#8217;t even realize their computers have these tiny videocameras.</p>

<p>This week, I tested a new videoconferencing-software program designed to help these people. It&#8217;s made especially for non-techies who simply want to use their Webcams to see someone while they&#8217;re talking to them. These people don&#8217;t want to conference several people into a call. And they especially don&#8217;t want to have to sign up for a confusing, intimidating videoconferencing service.</p>
<p>I used Logitech Vid by downloading it from <a href="http://www.logitech.com/vid">www.logitech.com/vid</a>. This program comes from Logitech Inc. and makes use of technology from SightSpeed, the videoconferencing-software company that Logitech acquired last fall. Vid works with Macs and Windows PCs that have built-in Webcams or those that use Webcams that plug into a computer&#8217;s USB port; it can even work if only one person has a Webcam so the person without one still sees video and hears audio from the other person.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Expiration Date for Some</h5>
<p>If this was a free download for all, Logitech Vid would be a slam dunk for the consumer. But as of now, it is free only for people who use Logitech Webcams or the people they invite, and for people who are registered on SightSpeed or Dell Video Chat, Dell&#8217;s version of the SightSpeed service, regardless of their Webcam brand.</p>
<p>For everyone else, the software expires after 30 days, with no option to pay for continued use. This means Logitech misses out on the growing number of people whose laptops and desktops have built-in Webcams, but who don&#8217;t want to buy a Logitech camera just to use Vid (and shouldn&#8217;t have to). Logitech says it intends to add a payment plan for Vid.</p>
<p>I tested Vid with my parents, who recently bought a netbook for the kitchen but &#8212; before this column &#8212; didn&#8217;t quite know how to use its Webcam. I also tried it with tech-savvy friends who have video-chatted with me on programs like Skype, Apple&#8217;s iChat and Google Chat. Everyone had the same reaction: They liked Logitech Vid&#8217;s refreshingly clean interface and simple setup. My Mom appreciated Vid&#8217;s easy instructions, which are written in plain terms that anyone can understand.</p>
<p>Vid worked while I was video-chatting from one Mac to another; from a Mac to a Windows PC and vice versa; and from one Windows PC to another.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Invitations to Chat</h5>
<p>I ran into trouble one night when Vid invitations that I sent to friends and family didn&#8217;t go through until after several attempts. Logitech says Vid was undergoing some behind-the-scenes server maintenance, which caused the glitches. (People who have trouble sending invitations like I did can alternatively direct friends to Logitech&#8217;s Web site to download the software.) And Vid didn&#8217;t work properly when I tried using it on my company-issued PC, which runs on a corporate network protected by firewalls. Logitech says Vid is targeted for consumer use, and not for sophisticated corporate environments.</p>

<p>People who are used to more advanced videoconferencing programs may find Vid unsatisfying. It doesn&#8217;t let friends instant message or share photos with one another, nor does it pull in buddy lists from outside videoconferencing programs. Vid isn&#8217;t designed to record conversations, host multiparty calls or take still photos during chats. Like other videoconferencing programs, slow Internet connections can occasionally cause video and audio to stutter.</p>
<p>But for simple video chats, Vid was a pleasure to use. If not for its 30-day expiration, I would definitely see myself chatting with my parents through this program on a regular basis. I used it to hold up three colors of dresses for my Mom so she could help me decide whether tea rose, azalea or peppermint was the best shade for my sister&#8217;s wedding (we&#8217;re leaning toward tea rose). My Dad and I had a face-to-face talk about my latest job news, and I saw a New Orleans friend and her dog, Boudreaux, appear on my computer screen almost as if they were in my house.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Smile for the Camera</h5>
<p>Vid users invite others to chat by entering the other person&#8217;s email address. For invitees to accept an invitation, they must download the Vid software, which could be a deterrent for some. Those who do download the software and start their own Vid accounts (by just entering an email and password) appear to the original inviter in a carousel-like display of their contacts&#8217; photographed faces.</p>
<p>These images are taken by the Webcam when someone sets up a Vid account, rather than allowing one to select his or her own photo from elsewhere on the computer. This is one example of Vid&#8217;s nod to simplicity and fewer choices. Likewise, the carousel of friends is organized in left-to-right alphabetical order showing those who are online followed by those offline. A simple status line below each person&#8217;s face identifies them as Unavailable, Available or Busy (already in a videoconference).</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Clicking on a Pic</h5>
<p>I called someone by clicking on their photo. The video-chat screen has four buttons that change its size, hide a small-image view of yourself, pause your video feed or end the conversation.</p>
<p>In a few instances, I heard a steady, high-pitched chirp and so did the person on the call with me. And we occasionally heard the echo of our own voices. Logitech said this sometimes happens when both users have open-air microphones and speakers turned up at the same time. Turning the speakers down usually solves the problem.</p>
<p>By August, all of Logitech&#8217;s standalone Webcams will come loaded with Vid software that starts up when the Webcam is plugged in. Now, the software is only downloadable from the Web.</p>
<p>Logitech Vid isn&#8217;t fancy, but it works well and presents its users with a satisfying experience so they can concentrate on enjoying their conversations. But it is a shame that Logitech doesn&#8217;t offer a payment plan for people who don&#8217;t use Logitech Webcams. If it did, Vid could help many people appreciate the Webcams they might never have otherwise used.</p>

In the past two months a bunch of my friends, ranging in age from early 20s to late 30s, have asked me about Twitter &#8212; or Tweeter, as one person accidentally called it.</p>
<p>To clear things up, I&#8217;ve put together a basic Twitter guide that explains how to use it, Twitter lingo, privacy options, mobile applications that can be used with the service and problems that it has. Let&#8217;s get started.</p>

<p><strong>What is it?</strong> In short, Twitter is a free social-networking tool that keeps people connected with one another and with sources of information. Twitter users submit updates about whatever they&#8217;re currently doing, and these updates cannot exceed 140 text-based characters.</p>
<p><strong>Lingo:</strong> Twitter is the name of the service. The term twittering describes the activity of updating a Twitter account. A tweet is an individual Twitter update. Twitterers are people who use the service.</p>
<p><strong>Followers, not Friends:</strong> Social-networking sites like Facebook and MySpace use the term &#8220;friend&#8221; to refer to people who are connected with one another, but Twitterers can simply follow one another&#8217;s messages by finding a person&#8217;s username and selecting a &#8220;Follow&#8221; option. This alerts the person that you&#8217;re following them, and they can reciprocally choose to follow you, or not.</p>
<p><strong>Why use it?</strong> While some people primarily use Twitter to post updates about their activities or comments on the news, I use the service more as a follower, allowing me to see quick snippets of news as it occurs. Most tweets are written by real people, while others, such as updates from news organizations that you&#8217;ve selected, are automatically generated. Many tweets include the addresses of Web sites with relevant articles that tell readers more on a topic.</p>
<p><strong>Where is it?</strong> Twitter works on your Web browser at Twitter.com, where user updates appear in a simple list form as they are submitted. After you&#8217;ve signed up and started following other people, those people&#8217;s updates, or tweets, will appear when you log onto Twitter.com using a username and password.</p>
<p>Twitter also works on mobile phones, where the 140-character limit allows messages to be sent and received via SMS text messaging. Tweets can also be sent and received via email. Users with smartphones like BlackBerrys or iPhones can use one of the many popular mobile applications for accessing Twitter, which offer much richer options than simple SMS does; I&#8217;ll get into these later.</p>
<p><strong>Privacy:</strong> Unlike other social-networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter isn&#8217;t focused on holding and sharing personal information about its members. Indeed, the service operates with a majority (80%, according to the company) of users opting to keep their updates public, that is, follow-able by anyone, without permission. This openness encourages people to follow one another or to see who others are already following, and then follow the same people.</p>
<p>However, users can opt to protect their updates, meaning they must grant permission for others to follow them. If you&#8217;d like to sign up for Twitter, but aren&#8217;t comfortable putting your first and/or last name on the site, you don&#8217;t have to; instead, just tell others your username.</p>
<p><strong>Twitter Page Personalization:</strong> Each user has a Twitter page showing all of his or her updates, or tweets. (Mine is twitter.com/kabster728, and you can follow me.) This page also shows the number of people a user follows, how many people follow her and how many total updates she has posted.</p>
<p>Twitterers can customize their Twitter page by uploading a photo to be used as the background. The icon representing each user can also be personalized, and this is important because it appears beside that person&#8217;s tweets on Twitter.com, where followers recognize and appreciate its familiarity. Some people, including me, use pictures of themselves as their icons, while others use random shots.</p>
<p><strong>Apps/Clients:</strong> Twitter works on any browser, and will also work on a mobile browser. If you have a mobile device like the BlackBerry or iPhone, you can jazz up the experience by downloading a third-party app like TwitterFon, TwitterBerry, Tweetie or Twitteriffic. Twittervision, another mobile app, plots points on maps to show where tweets originated. Desktop clients also abound, including Twhirl and TweetDeck. Twitterfeed will set your blog to automatically post content to Twitter.</p>
<p><strong>@Replies, Direct Messages:</strong> Each tweet that appears in your Twitter feed can be replied to using a shortcut arrow that appears beside the tweet, and these responses to tweets are called @Replies. So if JoeSchmo tweets to say he saw the new James Bond movie and hated it, you can reply to this with a tweet of your own that says, &#8220;@JoeSchmo I still adore Daniel Craig.&#8221; These @Replies appear for everyone to see, and must start with @ plus the username of whomever you&#8217;re responding to.</p>
<p>Direct Messages differ from @Replies because they can be sent only between people who are following one another. These messages aren&#8217;t posted publicly. They appear on your Twitter.com page in a right-side section labeled Direct Messages and will also be sent to your mobile device if you have one registered with Twitter.</p>
<p><strong>Favorites:</strong> If you read a tweet that you really like, you can save it as a favorite by selecting a small star beside the tweet, thus adding it to a Favorites section on your homepage. Anyone can see anyone else&#8217;s Favorites, regardless of whether or not they&#8217;re following one another.</p>
<p><strong>Problems:</strong> Twitter&#8217;s bare-bones approach gets to the point quickly, displaying tweets in a simple, quick-read format. But the site is lacking in many areas. It used to enable searching for people on Twitter, but that capability is currently down. Now, to search for friends on Twitter, you must upload your email contacts from a Web-based mail service. The company says it plans to have people-search working again by the end of the year. Meanwhile, search.twitter.com enables keyword or location searches.</p>
<p>Twitter lacks the ability to sort tweets according to what the user wants. If I just want to see tweets from real people and not those that are automatically generated, I&#8217;m out of luck. Same goes if I want to keep certain friends&#8217; tweets in a prominent place on my homepage; Twitter has no way of doing this.</p>
<p>Twitter users aren&#8217;t notified when someone responds to their tweet with an @Reply. I recently happened to look at @Replies on my Twitter homepage and found three from people who follow me (I don&#8217;t follow them).</p>
<p>If you&#8217;re adding a Web address to a tweet and the characters in the URL take up too much space, Twitter will automatically use TinyURL behind the scenes to shrink your long link into a shorter one when you post your tweet. But this works only if you have enough remaining characters in your tweet to fit the long version of your link. A built-in TinyURL converter on the page would help immensely.</p>
<p>Twitter says it&#8217;s working to make @Replies more effective. It also says it plans to do more with filtering and sorting, so that the Twitter interface is more useful. In the meantime, Twitter does a good job of giving people simplified news about others and the world around them. If you&#8217;re often in a rush, Twitter can be a great resource for fast information.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Instant-messaging programs, once the snobby little kids of the online communication world, have had to learn to play well with others.</p>
<p>AOL&#8217;s AIM started out with enough popularity to freely ignore the need to integrate with other programs; now, it can be argued that AIM retains its relevancy by operating with other messaging programs like <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=goog'>Google</a>&#8217;s Gmail chat and <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=aapl'>Apple</a>&#8217;s iChat. Other IM clients paired up with one another to increase usability, like when <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=msft'>Microsoft</a> and <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=yhoo'>Yahoo</a> became interoperable over two years ago.</p>
<p>But nowadays, social-networking offerings &#8212; like leaving messages on Facebook walls and receiving Twitter &#8220;tweets&#8221; from friends &#8212; compete with traditional instant-messaging programs. And advanced technology in mobile devices has helped these chats move from desktops to iPhones and BlackBerrys, where conversations can continue on-the-go, using mobile applications.</p>

<p>This week I tested three free programs that seem to acknowledge the fading star of isolated instant messaging, as we once knew it. Meebo, Adium and Digsby work by consolidating numerous messaging accounts into one combined program. Some of these include social-networking integration or even built-in email notifications, turning the service into a one-stop shop for online communication. The result can save people from choosing one IM system over another.</p>
<p>All three of these programs are straightforward and work without much effort or instruction. They require users to enter the user names and passwords to log onto each IM account, which may make some people uncomfortable, even though each site explains its privacy policy. Of the three, Digsby offers to integrate with the greatest number of programs all at once, including instant messaging, email and social-networking accounts. It also lets people handle email by deleting or sorting it directly in the IM window, which neither of the other programs does.</p>
<p>But Digsby isn&#8217;t yet usable on Macs or Linux, and Adium (the second-best offering) is available only on Macs. When used with the correct operating system, these programs perform as promised, easing communication overall and saving people the hassle of logging into various accounts &#8212; or missing out on chats with friends because of not signing into certain programs.</p>
<p>Meebo, <a href="http://www.meebo.com" rel="external">www.meebo.com</a>, is the only one of these three products that is completely Web-based. It works on all major browsers, including Internet Explorer, Firefox and Safari, and doesn&#8217;t require any installation &#8212; a plus for those who would like to be using instant messaging in the office but aren&#8217;t able to install software on corporate computers. It can log users into one of six messaging programs simultaneously, including Yahoo, Microsoft, AIM, Google, ICQ and Jabber.</p>
<p>I signed onto three instant-messaging accounts at once on Meebo by entering the username and password for each and selecting one overall &#8220;Sign In&#8221; button, which logged me into each program simultaneously and displayed all of my contacts in one condensed panel. Meebo can be configured to automatically launch within Firefox if a Firefox extension is downloaded.</p>
<p>Meebo.com is also usable on the iPhone and iPod Touch, allowing people to log into multiple accounts simultaneously from their mobile device. As of now, neither Adium nor Digsby has an application that allows it to work with the iPhone or iPod Touch.</p>
<p>Digsby, <a href="http://www.digsby.com" rel="external">www.digsby.com</a>, was a cinch to set up on my laptop, which was running Windows Vista. It walked me through the steps of adding accounts from instant-messaging programs, email accounts such as Gmail and Hotmail, and social-networking sites such as Facebook, MySpace and Twitter. Digsby works with IM and emails accounts from AOL/AIM, Yahoo, Microsoft and Google. Jabber, ICQ and Facebook chats also work with Digsby, along with IMAP and POP email accounts.</p>
<p>Once added, all of these accounts are represented in one clean panel. These consolidated communication programs saved me many extra clicks on my computer over a weekend, and I easily chatted with friends while checking messages. New emails received in my Gmail account were visible in a preview panel that popped up when I moved my cursor over the email account name. Right within this email preview panel, I could delete or archive each message; I was also able to mark a message as read or report it as spam. I performed all of these email tasks without opening my Gmail account in a browser or email client. Shortcuts in this preview panel labeled Open, Compose and Inbox sent me to my browser to perform these more-involved tasks.</p>
<p>This in-line functionality also applies to other email accounts, according to Digsby. But though I could see a tally of newly received Hotmail messages in my Digsby preview panel, these messages weren&#8217;t as interactive as those received in my Gmail inbox.</p>
<p>Digsby also tracks Twitter alerts and timelines, as well as Facebook newsfeeds and alerts &#8212; including posting notifications in your Digsby panel whenever someone &#8220;friends&#8221; you on Facebook.</p>
<p>Adium, <a href="http://www.adiumx.com" rel="external">www.adiumx.com</a>, wins points for cuteness. The downloaded program is represented by a goofy, green duck, which plops itself in the Mac operating system dock and closes its eyes when not in use. When new messages are received via Adium, this duck flaps its wings until you open the message. The Adium user interface incorporates sleek visuals, such as status windows that gracefully float above user names whenever a cursor moves over these names.</p>
<p>Adium works with AIM, ICQ, .Mac, Jabber, Google Talk, Windows Live Messenger and Yahoo Messenger. Adium supports new email notifications for some accounts, but doesn&#8217;t enable reading or sending email within the program. Instead, it offered to open my account via the browser or using Microsoft Entourage on the Mac. Social networking is limited to MySpace IM on Adium, though the next version will support Facebook Chat.</p>
<p>Adium organizes multiple conversations using tabs stacked at the bottom of a chat window. Icons line the top of each chat window, such as a file icon for transferring files and a lock that switches a conversation to be encrypted and off-the-record. Any conversation that isn&#8217;t designated encrypted is automatically stored in a table of Adium transcripts, which can be sorted by To, From or Date. Transcripts can be sorted using rough timelines like &#8220;within the past two weeks&#8221; or &#8220;since yesterday.&#8221;</p>
<p>I saved myself time and mouse clicks by using these three consolidation programs, though I preferred Digsby in the end because of its intuitive email integration. These programs will help to take down the instant-messaging barriers that have become turn-offs over the past couple years, and may better integrate IM with the social networks and mobile devices that are on the rise.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Nintendo&#8217;s Wii made its mark as the fun system that got gamers and non-gamers alike off their couches to play tennis and golf with motion-sensing controllers. On Monday, the company will introduce an accessory that encourages users to take exercising with the Wii even more seriously: Wii Fit and the Wii Balance Board.</p>

<p>For the past eight days, I&#8217;ve been stretching, crunching, yoga-posing and even running using this $90 package from Nintendo (NTDOY.PK). Wii Fit is the title of the disc that comes with the Wii Balance Board, a sturdy platform on which you perform your routines. The two are used together for various types of yoga, strength training, aerobics and balance games, which involve the Wii game system&#8217;s &#8220;Miis&#8221; &#8212; on-screen representations of yourself &#8212; that interact with trainers and other virtual characters. Sensors in the Balance Board detect a user&#8217;s weight, body mass index, balancing skills and positioning during activities, and the Wii Fit program keeps track of this information, providing tips on technique or weight loss. Wii Fit and the Balance Board must be used with the original Wii system, which costs $250.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve grown fond of using Wii Fit and the Balance Board because it holds me accountable for my weight and balance skills. I learned fitness and health tips from a small, animated image of the Balance Board that jumped around on-screen &#8212; such as the fact that people who cross their legs while sitting are more likely to have back problems. And after a few days of using the system, I could feel a difference in my muscles.</p>
<p>For those used to 30-to-40-minute workout sessions, the Wii Fit programs may seem lightweight, since activities last for only about three to five minutes each. To unlock longer activities or additional strength-training repetitions, you must first do them a handful of times in their short versions, which can be frustrating. Nintendo says this is designed so that average users don&#8217;t feel intimidated, but I felt like some of the activities ended just as I was getting into them. Almost all activities involve actually standing on or touching the board.</p>
<p>Motivation is a key element in the Wii Fit programs. An on-screen graph tracked my progress, and I &#8220;stamped&#8221; each calendar day to show that I had exercised. Each minute of activity added a point to my Fit Bank, and enough points unlocked new activities; Wii Fit includes over 40 altogether. On-screen instructors demonstrated and joined me during yoga and strength-training exercises, congratulating me when I held my balance or noting that I stopped mid-exercise.</p>
<p>A daily body test measured my weight and body mass index against those from previous days and challenged me to two short balance tests, which changed daily. After, I was told my Wii Fit Age, a number reached using my actual age, BMI and performance on the balance tests. On good days this number was a couple of years below my real age, but it drifted upward when I was given harder tests, sometimes reaching 13 years older than my actual age.</p>

<p>More than one person can use the system and profiles can be password protected. Friends can use the Balance Board under someone else&#8217;s profile; the system notices weight changes and confirms that it&#8217;s alright to continue.</p>
<p>The Balance Board measures roughly the size of a step used in step aerobics classes, and uses the same technology that gauges the weight of airplanes. These sensors expand and contract when someone stands on the board, measuring weight, and where and how that weight is shifting on the board. This works out of the box with four included AA batteries. Its power button can be nudged on with a foot, turning off automatically after five minutes of non-use.</p>
<p>I started with basic yoga, attempting the half-moon pose. I opted for a male instructor who told me that this position helped improve posture and digestion. He briefly demonstrated the position, and we got started on the actual session, which lasted two minutes. A large, on-screen circle that expanded and contracted illustrated when I should inhale and exhale as I held positions. I tried the Warrior, Tree and Sun Salutation positions throughout the week.</p>
<p>In the strength-training section of the program, I liked the Single-Leg Stretch exercise, which involved standing on the Balance Board on one leg and holding the other leg off the ground, bent up toward my chest. I slowly extended this bent leg out and in, while moving my arms and trying to maintain my center of balance. This exercise started at six repetitions, but increased to 10 reps as I improved; 20 reps are the maximum.</p>
<p>I tried the Torso Twists and Rowing Squats, but had a lot of trouble with Push Ups and Side Planks (modified push-ups), because I&#8217;m not good at push-ups. To my surprise, my trainer didn&#8217;t notice when I couldn&#8217;t finish the session. I got my best score on that exercise, clearly a flaw in the system.</p>
<p>During yoga and strength-training exercises, an on-screen red dot marked where my center of balance was detected, and I was encouraged to try to keep that dot within a highlighted area. After the exercise, a diagram showed where my weight had shifted, and I earned better rankings when I distributed weight evenly.</p>
<p>Aerobics were more fun, including hula hooping. I rotated my hips and I leaned forward so that my on-screen cartoon self could catch hoops thrown over my head by other characters. The Balance Board tracked the number of times I rotated my waist around in a circle. One aerobics activity that didn&#8217;t use the board was Basic Run, which requires users to put the Wii remote in a pocket or hold it while running in place for time intervals measuring three, five or 10 minutes depending on the pace. This mode is designed so users can either watch other runners on-screen or tune into television while running as Wii Fit tracks your progress. An aerobics activity called Basic Step was like Dance Dance Revolution: on-screen footprints showed where and how to step next &#8212; on and off the board.</p>
<p>Balance Games were fun &#8212; but hard. I tried a bunch, including Soccer Heading (where you pretend you&#8217;re the goalie), Ski Slalom and Tightrope Walk, and was surprised by the sensitivity of the Balance Board. But the more I played, the better I became at controlling my balance.</p>
<p>I brought the Wii and Balance Board with me to my parents&#8217; house last weekend, but most people will do best to keep this board in one place since it weighs 10 pounds.</p>
<p>When I stepped onto the Balance Board at my parents&#8217; house in a room with wall-to-wall carpeting, the system thought I had lost 13.4 pounds since the day before. I stepped off and tried this measurement again a few minutes later, but was told I lost another 4.6 pounds. However, when I returned to my own home with the board on an area rug on hardwood flooring, the system showed I &#8220;gained&#8221; 16.1 pounds. My weight at my own house was on the mark.</p>
<p>Some of my relatives jokingly saw this instant weight loss as a reason to buy a Balance Board, but this made me question the system&#8217;s accuracy.</p>
<p>Nintendo solved the mystery: The carpeting in my parents&#8217; house, which I mistakenly thought was similar to the area rug in my house, must have been touching the bottom of the board, therefore transferring my weight onto the carpet and away from the board. Four circular &#8220;feet&#8221; come with the Balance Board to elevate it, solving the problem.</p>
<p>When the Wii Fit system thought I lost or gained a lot of weight in one day, it was concerned and offered tips for healthier fitness. In the case of the supposed weight gain, I was asked to think about why I might have gained weight, then had to select an answer from a list of reasons why, including Late Dinners, Night Snacking and Not Exercising. The system gave health tips related to the reasons.</p>
<p>Users&#8217; outside exercise can be accounted for in the system. I added the time I spend playing tennis each week and this information plugged into a graph to illustrate fitness activity over time.</p>
<p>The idea of having a virtual trainer and a way to set weight-loss goals while tracking progress could be truly valuable for people in need of motivation without the expense and/or hassle of going to a gym. If you&#8217;re looking for a fun way to get in shape, the Balance Board will do the trick. Like the Wii, its activities encourage all sorts of people to use it, marking yet another smart move from Nintendo.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>When it comes to booking travel reservations online, numerous companies are itching to help. But many travelers prefer to use the same site each time because they know what to expect and because that site holds their user-account information.</p>
<p>This week, I tested two free Web sites that don&#8217;t try to steal users away from their trusted travel Web sites. Instead, these sites attempt to make your already booked reservations more useful and accessible.</p>
<p>I tested two such sites: TripIt Inc.&#8217;s <a href="http://www.TripIt.com" rel="external">www.TripIt.com</a>, which acts as a virtual assistant to generate schedules using your reservations; and Groopvine (<a href="http://Groopvine.Groople.com" rel="external">http://Groopvine.Groople.com</a>), a feature offered by Groople, Englewood, Colo., that brings social networking to group travel plans. Both travel aids became available in September, though Groopvine has been released only in its beta, or testing, stage.</p>
<p>As someone who makes travel arrangements for about 10 work-related or personal trips every month, I paid close attention to the simplicity and usefulness of these sites. TripIt&#8217;s straightforward approach makes it addictive: When I forwarded travel confirmation emails to plans@tripit.com, the information in each reservation was automatically assessed, compiled and organized into a schedule, which was emailed to me in seconds.</p>
<p>Groople (a mashing of the words &#8220;Groups&#8221; and &#8220;People&#8221;) started four years ago as a site that helped big groups book hotels, flights and other travel arrangements. Groople&#8217;s new Groopvine tool offers group booking, but it focuses on working as an online forum where trips can be discussed among those in the traveling group. Photos, polls, videos and Web feeds can be added to each group&#8217;s trip page, prompting everyone to participate in the trip planning &#8212; or at least get excited about it.</p>
<p>I found a few hiccups on both sites. TripIt duplicates plans on a schedule if you accidentally forward a confirmation email more than once, and it works with most but not all reservations. Groopvine&#8217;s trip pages are rough around the edges in some places, obscuring key features and making certain flight and hotel ideas impossible to share with the group. But each site is helpful in its own way.</p>
<p>TripIt is a refreshing switch from the Web sites that force people to create usernames and passwords before doing anything. I started using TripIt by forwarding an Expedia email reservation to plans@tripit.com. Less than a minute later, I received an email from TripIt that included a link to my itinerary of flights, local weather forecasts for the duration of my vacation and maps related to where I was going. This email also included an assigned account ID (the email address from which I forwarded the reservation) and a password that I easily changed from within the account&#8217;s Web settings.</p>
<p>Along with this first test from Expedia, I forwarded a variety of other reservations to TripIt including bookings for a hotel in Atlanta, a rental car in Washington, D.C., and a round-trip Amtrak train from D.C. to Wilmington. I forwarded the reservations from various email addresses (as long as they were listed in my account), and each reservation was added to the right itinerary according to date.</p>
<p>TripIt can also accept forwarded restaurant reservations made on OpenTable or TopTable and will sort these into the itinerary.</p>
<p>This Web site&#8217;s idea of asking users to do very little to get a fully organized schedule works well, though everything can be edited. I unknowingly forwarded the same car rental to plans@tripit.com twice and two car reservations appeared on my itinerary, making me think I booked two cars until I saw the confirmation number repeated and deleted one. Attractive pre-loaded icons or your own photos can be added to the top of each schedule, as well as other plans for while you&#8217;re traveling, including images and Web links.</p>
<p>A feature called TripIt To Me lets you retrieve anything loaded into TripIt by simply emailing a command to the site, such as &#8220;Get Flight Tomorrow.&#8221; This worked well on my BlackBerry.</p>
<p>I started using Groopvine by signing up and creating a trip page for an annual vacation. I walked through steps to create my page, which I titled and set to a certain color scheme. I chose pink hues and added various sections to my page for displaying polls (to get votes from invited travelers), photos, videos, RSS feeds (for news related to the trip destination, for instance), weather, group discussions and useful Web sites.</p>
<p>I invited a group of friends to join my trip, and everyone accessed the trip page without needing to first become a member of Groopvine. Instead, usernames and passwords are automatically created for return sign-ins. In a few short steps, I made one poll asking friends where they thought we should go and another to ask them how many days they preferred to spend on vacation.</p>
<p>My fellow travelers and I added photos to the page that showed up in handsome Web 2.0 fashion, popping out from the screen in a box overlaid on the page at the click of a button. But I was disappointed that more of the site didn&#8217;t take advantage of this technology, which saves users from jumping to new Web pages. While browsing hotels and flights &#8212; two important parts of travel arrangements &#8212; I was directed to sites away from my personalized trip page.</p>
<p>Users can share hotel suggestions with the group by selecting up to five at once and asking others which they prefer, including details like room rates and amenities. When starting a trip, you must choose from a list to tell Groopvine what the trip is for (i.e. class reunion, sports team travel, family vacations, etc.). From that information, Groopvine suggests certain hotels depending on your group. A school trip, for example, would automatically return results with hotels rather than motels because motels don&#8217;t keep kids as contained and safe.</p>
<p>But in a search for Arizona hotels, I couldn&#8217;t share any of my choices with the group without first booking rooms. Groople says 70% of its hotels are shareable before booking, so I guess I picked the wrong city. I looked at flights and fares from various airlines, but (again) couldn&#8217;t share my findings with the group unless I booked a trip first or knew specific details about flight options. Groople says sharing flight information before booking &#8212; as is done with hotels &#8212; isn&#8217;t possible yet, though the company is working on finding a way to do it.</p>
<p>I&#8217;d prefer to share flight options with my group as I came across them. But it&#8217;s understandable that flights are difficult to share because fares change so often and various seats and fares are offered to members with different airline statuses. Another challenge with airlines is that only six reservations can be booked online at a time. Groople Agents, reachable by phone, can assist with challenges like these at no charge.</p>
<p>On March 11, Groople plans improvements for Groopvine, including fixing the hotels so that all of them are searchable and sharable. A new opt-in feature will automatically notify each traveler via email of changes on the trip site.</p>
<p>If you wish you had a personal assistant to arrange your travel reservations into a neat itinerary, TripIt does a great job and requires minimal effort and time. Its itineraries look polished, combining reservations into one neat list per trip that can be retrieved at any time. Groople&#8217;s Groopvine will encourage groups to get excited about their coming trip, whether they booked it through another favorite travel Web site or through Groopvine, itself. Hopefully, the impending fixes due in March will make this site&#8217;s pages more user-friendly.</p>

<p>On a chilly day, most folks find it tough to open the front door to retrieve the newspaper &#8212; much less climb a 15,000-foot mountain. But plenty of people court danger by rappelling down canyons and camping in remote woodlands. This week, I tested a device that will give thrill seekers a little extra insurance: It lets the folks back home track their progress, and learn when they&#8217;re OK or when they&#8217;re in trouble.</p>
<p>When activated, the $170 SPOT Satellite Messenger from SPOT Inc., the Milpitas, Calif., unit of <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=GSAT'>Globalstar</a> Inc., emits a signal to GPS satellites, which notify SPOT&#8217;s messaging service. The service then sends a message to friends, family or emergency rescue teams about your current status. Because it uses GPS technology, the SPOT will work even when you&#8217;re far from cellphone signal range and anywhere in the world.</p>
<p>I tested SPOT in my Washington, D.C., neighborhood (city parks still count as outdoorsy) and on a trip across the California desert and mountains on the way to a conference &#8212; though I was scaling mountains in an air-conditioned SUV rather than in a rock-climbing harness.</p>

<p>In my tests, SPOT worked without a problem. Notifications from the device were delivered to my friends via email and text message and included my current latitude and longitude. The service also sent along canned messages that I set up in advance on the company&#8217;s Web site at <a href="http://www.findmespot.com" rel="external">www.findmespot.com</a> and hyperlinks to Google Maps that showed my location.</p>
<p>SPOT charges a $100 annual service fee, which includes an unlimited number of messages that can be sent out from your device using three buttons: OK/Check, Help and 911. An additional $50 per year tracking service called SPOTcasting follows and marks your exact location every 10 minutes for 24 hours each time it&#8217;s initiated.</p>
<p>This simple and straightforward device could really help in a dangerous situation. And the company takes its job seriously: A steely message on the SPOT packaging reads, &#8220;Opening this box is the first step in making sure you don&#8217;t come home in one.&#8221; But SPOT could also save the day in less-adventurous situations, such as when your car dies and you&#8217;re out of cellphone range.</p>
<p>However, SPOT isn&#8217;t perfect. While its three message-sending buttons make it easy to use, they also limit the types of messages it can send. There&#8217;s no keyboard, so messages must be brief and set up in advance on the Web site. And the device only sends messages and can&#8217;t receive them. Your friends and family have no way of getting back in touch with you on SPOT should you send a Help message from beyond cellphone range.</p>
<p>SPOT is a bright orange device with roughly the same surface measurement as a BlackBerry, though it&#8217;s considerably thicker. Its durable casing makes it waterproof and floatable, along with working in extremes like -40 degrees Fahrenheit and up to 21,000 feet above sea level. It runs on two AA lithium batteries, which last for different amounts of time according to the type of message being sent.</p>
<p>Setting up SPOT took only a few minutes on the Web site. A default or personalized message can be set up to go out with OK/Check and Help notifications, and email addresses and cellphone numbers (for SMS text messages) can be entered online as the destinations for these messages. Every message includes the user&#8217;s current location in terms of latitude and longitude, along with a hyperlink to access that location via Google Maps.</p>

<p>The OK/Check button can be used most casually by owners of this gadget, as it merely serves to assure others that you&#8217;re fine. A good example might be two people on a three-month sailing trip who use this button as a means of checking in with family every Sunday night.</p>
<p>If OK/Check is held down for five seconds, it initiates the SPOTcasting tracking service (provided you&#8217;ve signed up for it) and locates your device every 10 minutes for a 24-hour period. These tracked points show up on SPOT&#8217;s Web site and are displayed as numbered points on Google Maps.</p>
<p>SPOT worked for me while driving through a regional park with a campsite, where cellphone range was faint, and up into boulder-crusted mountains. Just minutes after pressing Help or OK/Check or initiating tracking, friends received word of my location via emails and text messages.</p>
<p>You can&#8217;t set SPOT to track a trip for longer than 24 hours or at different intervals, such as every hour for a week. And the only way for others to view your tracked points is if they sign in using your online account&#8217;s username and password.</p>
<p>The Help button is used in more urgent situations and uses messages such as &#8220;Urgent help needed. Pick me up at campsite.&#8221; (The default for Help is &#8220;This is a HELP message. Please send for help ASAP.&#8221;) But preset messages shouldn&#8217;t be made too specific during the online setup because they can&#8217;t be changed from the device later.</p>
<p>The 911 and Help automatic notifications will always override less urgent messages like OK/Check or SPOTcasting. In the case of the 911 and Help buttons, one can be pressed after the other and the messages for both will still go out at the same time. The 911 button will send a message every five minutes until power runs out (the company says this will last for up to seven days) or until the message is canceled; Help sends a message every five minutes for an hour or until canceled.</p>
<p>The 911 button is more serious. When pressed, SPOT Inc. automatically notifies a certified 911 company called the GEOS International Emergency Response Center, which contacts your specified emergency contacts first to see if they know anything about your situation before dispatching a rescue squad using your coordinates.</p>
<p>If you can adjust to SPOT&#8217;s three-button approach, the device could be helpful for you or someone you know during outdoor adventures. Many people will buy SPOT simply for its 911 button, as an insurance policy on fluky cellphone service.</p>

<p>These digital creations save forgetful friends who don&#8217;t think far enough in advance to buy and send snail-mail cards. However, even the hippest e-cards, such as customizable cartoons from political parody site JibJab.com, are no match for paper cards with thoughtfully penned sentiments.</p>

<p>Rather than fight the ever-popular, old-school cards, the digital world is trying to improve the way people buy and send those cards. This week I tested a Web site called <a href="http://www.jackcards.com" rel="external">www.jackcards.com</a>, which sends email reminders a month before important dates and offers to ship paper cards one, two, or four weeks before an event. The cards can arrive pre-stamped and pre-addressed, so you need only add your own hand-written message before dropping them in the mail.</p>
<p>Jack Cards LLC of Boston based its business after the notion that an imaginary correspondence butler named &#8220;Jack&#8221; could take care of you, making you look like the friend/spouse/relative/boss of the year. Its cards range from $1.50 to $6 each, plus the cost of a stamp if you opt to get the card pre-stamped; U.S. shipping is free throughout December.</p>
<p>My primary skepticism about Jack Cards was its content: Did it offer enough variety to justify buying cards without seeing them? Would its cards be funny enough to send my uncle into a fit of laughter? And would they be like the tear-jerkers best friends see in stores and buy for one another for no reason?</p>
<p>Jack Cards prides itself on unique offerings that can&#8217;t be found in the local drugstore, and I found that its cards fit the bill for many occasions. It&#8217;s worth noting the cards looked even better in person, created by about 40 designers who left me both scratching my head over some of their humor and cooing over their beautiful designs. But the functionality of the site needs to improve, especially in the way it helps users search through cards; too often, results were hit and miss. And it doesn&#8217;t incorporate enough rich Web 2.0 features, which could improve navigation on the site and be a real boon for looking at cards (imagine an inset animation of a card opening and revealing its message inside).</p>

<p>Predictably, Hallmark Cards Inc. isn&#8217;t sitting idly by as a start-up tries to steals its thunder. Its Web site, <a href="http://Hallmark.com" rel="external">Hallmark.com</a>, sells paper cards in addition to e-cards and it, too, can remind you of coming events. Its way of personalizing cards is to send them directly to recipients with a message typed inside &#8212; a method that isn&#8217;t as personal. Like Jack Cards, Hallmark offers to mail cards to buyers to send out but doesn&#8217;t pre-stamp or pre-address anything.</p>
<p>Hallmark also differs from Jack Cards in the shipping department. A $2.99 birthday card from Hallmark.com cost $2.95 to be shipped to me &#8212; and wouldn&#8217;t arrive at my door for five business days. The free shipping offer from Jack Cards will end in January, but the company normally charges 99 cents for two- to three-day shipping; this flat fee applies to a package filled with any number of cards.</p>
<p>Without signing in, anyone can browse through the more than 1,000 cards on JackCards.com. Those interested in joining the site can do so for free after entering a name, password, email and birthday. Members are asked to enter a list of the &#8220;Fast Five&#8221; &#8212; people with whom they most often correspond, such as parents, siblings, best friends or close colleagues.</p>
<p>Each of the Fast Five is set up with a name, address and list of events that correspond to the person; I listed my parents with their anniversary, Mother&#8217;s Day or Father&#8217;s Day, birthdays and Christmas. I was a little stunned to find an event titled &#8220;Will You Marry Me?&#8221; but I suppose Jack Cards thought of everything.</p>
<p>The site could stand to be better organized. The page filled with data on each of my Fast Five seemed jumbled, and jumping from one contact to another wasn&#8217;t as easy as it should be. Hyperlinks beside the events I entered for these people directed me to a general browsing page for cards instead of to a page specifically related to an event. These extra steps gave the page a clumsy feel.</p>

<p>Drop-down search toolbars let you choose the occasion, style of card (Humor, Just For Kids, Romantic etc.), recipient and designer. Each card&#8217;s front and inside messages, size and paper color are identified as you move your cursor over them.</p>
<p>I was stunned by some of the Mother-specific birthday cards. None of the cards said &#8220;Happy Birthday, Mom,&#8221; which was a problem because without that, the cards all seemed ambiguous. A card in this search said, &#8220;You are going to cherish this birthday card years from now. Cuz who knows if I&#8217;ll remember your birthday again. Happy Birthday.&#8221; I can&#8217;t think of anyone who would give such a card to a mother. The company continues to improve its searching to be more accurate.</p>
<p>But Jack Cards did introduce me to some clever and original material that I never would&#8217;ve seen in my CVS. Beautifully colorful cards made by Masha D&#8217;yans caught my eye immediately and looked more like watercolor paintings than cards.</p>
<p>I bought a good variety of about 25 cards and had them sent to me, some stamped and pre-labeled with my return address and the recipient&#8217;s address typed in attractive script, others without any stamp or label. Square cards cost more to mail (58 cents compared with 41 cents), but Jack Cards will give you the appropriate stamp. The weight and quality of the cards, along with their artistic attributes, made them feel more special than something that has been picked up from a shelf and opened by a hundred passersby. Many cards were individually packaged in plastic wrappers to stay clean en route.</p>
<p>If Jack Cards can continue to work on its site&#8217;s navigation and search functions, I think its system would be welcomed by many people looking for good-quality, well-designed cards that catch the eye. It saves users the hassle of last-minute trips to the card store, and still lets greeting cards keep their personal touch, which is what makes them such a permanent fixture in our lives.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>No matter how perfectly shot or emotionally meaningful your digital photos may be, if they aren&#8217;t uploaded to your computer or to a Web site, no one else will ever see them as they languish in your camera. This problem has plagued the digital-photo industry for years, though the cameras themselves have improved.</p>
<p>Most users know how to upload photos, but don&#8217;t want to hassle with USB cords and slow upload speeds when transferring images onto a computer or photo-sharing site. Camera docks and memory-card readers built into PCs have attempted to alleviate these transferring problems, but these so-called shortcuts still require a certain amount of dedication to the process.</p>
<p>In the past couple of years, a handful of companies have gone a step farther by introducing Wi-Fi enabled digital cameras, notably <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=7731.TO'>Nikon</a> Inc. and <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=ek'>Eastman Kodak</a> Co. But this capability works only in certain cameras and even then requires users to walk through a number of steps to send the photos through a service created by the company instead of sending them to a computer or Web site.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Little Effort Needed</h5>
<p>This week, I tested a refreshingly simple gadget that solves this problem and does what most technology products don&#8217;t: It works in existing devices and requires next to no effort. The $100 Eye-Fi Card by Eye-Fi Inc. (<a href="http://www.eye.fi" rel="external">www.eye.fi</a>) is a two-gigabyte SecureDigital memory card with a built-in wireless chip. It slips into any camera with an SD-card slot, and whenever the camera is turned on, looks for a familiar Wi-Fi network and uploads your photos to your Mac or PC and one of 17 photo-sharing sites. After a quick, one-time setup, the user does nothing more than turning on the digital camera.</p>
<p>I thought this thing was too good to be true and set out to find its flaws. But after using it with two digital cameras (one brand new and the other over three years old), three different computers (each with different operating systems) and five photo-sharing sites, I&#8217;m convinced that the Eye-Fi is a terrific little tool. It works quickly and is a no-brainer to get going. The only people who won&#8217;t like it are those who enjoy razzing their lazy friends for forgetting to share digital photos.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Minor Inconveniences</h5>
<p>The Eye-Fi&#8217;s flaws are minor enough to dismiss. For one thing, it doesn&#8217;t work on Wi-Fi networks that use log-in pages like those in Starbucks; instead, it&#8217;s meant to work on home networks or other &#8220;open&#8221; networks. Secondly, there&#8217;s no way to know when Eye-Fi finishes transferring photos unless you check your computer. Finally, your digital camera must stay on for the duration of the wireless transfer, which slightly taxes battery power, and slower networks and/or transferring numerous higher-resolution photos will require a bit more juice. Likewise, Eye-Fi looks for Wi-Fi networks whenever the camera is on, though the company says this only uses a minimal amount of the camera&#8217;s battery power.</p>
<p>The Eye-Fi Card comes in a small, colorful box that reminded me of a pop-up book: Pull one side and a quick-start guide appears on the right while the left swings out a piece holding the Eye-Fi card reader and SD card. This reader is only needed for the initial setup on each computer, which only took a few minutes per system.</p>
<p>I tried my Eye-Fi first on a Windows XP machine, plugging the card reader and card into a USB port. The software setup walks users through clear, quick steps like testing the computer&#8217;s firewall to be sure it can work through it and asking which folder should be designated to receive wirelessly transferred images. Here, I also typed in my account information for sharing images on Kodak Gallery; later I added Shutterfly, Snapfish, Picasa and Flickr. Other online destinations included blogs like Vox and TypePad, along with social-networking giant Facebook. The last step instructed me to insert the Eye-Fi SD card into my camera to snap the first test photo of myself, making sure it was working properly.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Managing Your Photos</h5>
<p>Transferred photos are all reflected in the Eye-Fi Manager, a Web-based, password-protected site that tells which images were uploaded to photo-sharing sites and the computer. Users can opt to only upload from the Eye-Fi to one or the other or both, but only one photo-sharing site and one Mac or PC can be selected at a time. Account information for any of the 17 sharing sites can be saved within Eye-Fi, making it a cinch to switch where you want to send photos.</p>
<p>Around the office, within my registered Wi-Fi network, I took photos that showed up seconds later on my computer screen. At home, I entered my password-protected network&#8217;s information one time and watched as captured photos transferred wirelessly from my camera to either my Mac or Windows Vista laptop.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Quick Transfers</h5>
<p>On average, it took about 40 seconds to upload each image to a Web site and about 40 seconds more after that for a photo to transfer onto my hard drive. I got home from a friend&#8217;s cocktail party and set my camera on a table with its power on. Ten minutes later, I turned on my computer to check the transfer and 12 photos from the party were uploaded to my Kodak Gallery account and my iMac&#8217;s hard drive.</p>
<p>Images upload in JPEG formats using their original, full resolutions. Some sharing sites change the formats for photos, but this varies between sites and isn&#8217;t related to Eye-Fi.</p>
<p>Eye-Fi won&#8217;t do absolutely everything for you, so for certain photo-sharing sites, you&#8217;ll still need to log on to send out emails for sharing albums with friends. But double clicking on any of the images in the Eye-Fi Manager takes you directly to wherever that image lives &#8212; whether on Picasa, Flickr, or your own hard drive.</p>
<p>I swapped the Eye-Fi SD card from one camera, an older Konica-Minolta Dimage X50 that still works well, to a new Kodak EasyShare V1253, which ironically has built-in photo emailing capability that isn&#8217;t nearly as easy to use as Eye-Fi. The Eye-Fi didn&#8217;t miss a beat and operated the same way in both cameras.</p>
<p>The Eye-Fi Card is as simple as it sounds and works with most cameras that use SD cards (for a complete list of compatible cameras, see <a href="http://support.eye.fi/compatibility/" rel="external">http://support.eye.fi/compatibility/</a>). If someone you know is constantly taking pictures that are never seen again by anyone else and they use a Wi-Fi network, Eye-Fi will serve as a carefree solution that takes the aggravation out of transferring photos to share with others.</p>
