			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>It can be hard to find just what you want in the 24-hour news cycle that constantly churns content out online.</p>
<p>One way to find the information you want is by setting up computer-generated alerts. These electronic notifications are relatively simple to use and offer a range of helpful services, from a virtual heads-up when your name is mentioned online to messages about a product&#8217;s price suddenly dropping.</p>
<p>For years, I&#8217;ve used Google Alerts as a way of keeping track of myself online. If my name is mentioned in a blog or if this column appears on the Web, such as on the site of a newspaper that syndicates it, a Google Alert sends me an email about it. Google Alerts can work for you to find a variety of things, such as telling you if a video of a favorite band popped up online or that a blogger posted something about last night&#8217;s episode of &#8220;Mad Men.&#8221;</p>
<p>In about a month, <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=goog'>Google</a> will begin delivering these alerts to users via feeds, as well as emails. Google (GOOG) certainly isn&#8217;t alone in the alerts arena, as Yahoo (YHOO), Microsoft (MSFT) and AOL (TWX) are also players. This week I tried two small companies that recently joined the mission to help users find the Web content using alerts.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Pinpointing Searches</h5>
<p>I tried Alerts.com and Yotify.com, and found worthwhile features in both. While Google Alerts does a good job of finding search terms in news, blogs and videos, Alerts.com and Yotify use forms that are a cinch to fill out and let you pinpoint your searches.</p>
<p>Alerts.com offers to notify users via email, SMS text messages or even voice calls to a cellphone or landline. The site organizes your alerts on a personalized Web page and uses a desktop application called Elertz to tell you when an alert has generated results. I liked this site&#8217;s flexibility: It not only gave me different ways to receive notifications, but also enabled a variety of options for time-specific deliveries of alerts.</p>
<p>But Yotify has advantages of its own, including the ability to integrate with FriendFeed and Facebook so friends can offer their recommendations or opinions. It also lets users search for event tickets or items auctioned on eBay (EBAY). And a smart preview panel gives you an idea of the type of results your search will return before you submit the request for an alert.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Viewing Results</h5>
<p>For now, Google Alerts and Yotify will send alert notifications only via email, though all three services will let you view your alert results online. All three are free, but SMS alerts sent to a cellphone via Alerts.com may not be, depending on your plan.</p>
<p>All in all, I found there were certain things each service was good at doing. For example, Alerts.com lets me know college football scores when I want them: only after the final score; at the end of each quarter and after the final score; or at the end of each quarter, after the final score and after each time a team scores points. Yotify gave me detailed options in a Craigslist search for furniture, including showing only listings with photos or just those that included the word &#8220;sofa&#8221; in a title; it will even hunt for a specific price range.</p>
<p>For the person who wants to spend minimal time creating basic alerts, Google Alerts will do the trick. These can be narrowed down to show results that fall into the News, Web, Blogs, Video or Groups categories, or you can perform more-blanketed searches using a Comprehensive category.</p>
<p>Alerts.com offers plenty of simple alerts that require only a bit of scheduling to set up. Each alert appears as a widget that can be expanded, edited or deleted with a simple click, and this page has a clean look with attractive, cohesive graphics.</p>
<p>I didn&#8217;t care much for Elertz, the desktop component of Alerts.com, because once installed, it notified me of new Alerts data using an irksome star that glowed red until I checked my notifications. Elertz didn&#8217;t work properly on my Windows XP machine until Alerts.com fixed a bug.</p>
<p>But Alerts.com&#8217;s price watch and price protection alerts are incredibly useful. Price watch looks to see if an item&#8217;s price drops into a lower price range, at which point users are notified. Price protection watches to see if products you bought are now on sale so you can get a refund. I tried both, and I&#8217;m hoping I&#8217;ll hear soon that a specific pair of Anthropologie boots is on sale.</p>
<p>Yotify uses the idea of virtual scouts that scour the Web for specific information. Scout findings can be condensed or expanded in one click, and results can be filtered for more specific findings or shared with friends via Facebook or FriendFeed.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Scout Work</h5>
<p>But some scouts took too much work to set up. When I tried to set up a scout for college football scores, I didn&#8217;t see a sports category (Alerts.com had a colorful NCAA icon right on its home page). Instead, I had to choose News, then select ESPN, then NCAAF and finally enter &#8220;Penn State&#8221; in a key word box for my scout. And after all that, the scout offered results only daily or hourly via email.</p>
<p>I would also prefer if I could better organize my scout lists. As it was, all of my results appeared in one list: The NCAA scout was right above the scout that found Obama mentions on Huffington Post, and below that were results for YouTube&#8217;s most-watched videos. Yotify says it will add ways to more neatly arrange data in the next month or so.</p>
<p>On average, Yotify returned more results instantly, such as 10 instant Craigslist sofa results compared with Alerts.com&#8217;s two in the first few hours.</p>
<p>Overall, these sites are worth trying so you can find which alert system works best for you and stop wasting time searching the Web the old-fashioned way.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>It&#8217;s a fact of life and one of the reasons I have a job: digital electronics will eventually break or get replaced. But it&#8217;s hard to know just what to do with the gadgets that get left behind. Some people stuff them in junk drawers. Others want to donate or recycle their old electronics, but worry about compromising private data. And plenty of people want some monetary compensation.</p>

<p>This week I took a look at some options for people who want to get rid of old electronics, one way or another. The good news is that there are a handful of Web sites that make it easy to do this &#8212; and some of them may even pay you for your old products. The bad news is that you&#8217;ll likely receive only a fraction of what you originally paid, especially if you waited a while to get rid of it.</p>
<p>Some sites, like <a href="http://Gazelle.com" rel="external">Gazelle.com</a> and <a href="http://VenJuvo.com" rel="external">VenJuvo.com</a>, offer cash for your items and/or will recycle products. Another site, <a href="http://TechForward.com" rel="external">TechForward.com</a>, lets people pay a fee to &#8220;lock in&#8221; a value for how much the site promises to pay for the product in the future. <a href="http://MyBoneYard.com" rel="external">MyBoneYard.com</a> accepts only laptops, desktop PCs, cellphones and flat-panel monitors, and gives Visa (V) gift cards rather than cash.</p>
<p>I was surprised to receive significantly different value offers from Gazelle and VenJuvo when trying to sell the exact same products on each site. In one instance, VenJuvo offered me $30 more than Gazelle for a digital camera; another time, I got $15 more from Gazelle for an old Apple (AAPL) iPod. It&#8217;s worth the extra step to shop around at more than one of these sites before getting rid of something.</p>
<p>Both ask a few questions about the item, including its condition and whether or not it still has the accessories that originally came with it. Gazelle determines a product&#8217;s value using retail &#8212; think Amazon (AMZN) and eBay (EBAY) &#8212; and wholesale channels; VenJuvo uses similar criteria and also looks at competitors&#8217; prices.</p>
<p>If you worry about someone stealing your digital data, you&#8217;ll likely not feel comfortable dropping something in the mail that&#8217;s chock full of personal information, especially if it no longer powers on to allow the owner to wipe this information.</p>
<p>Both Gazelle and VenJuvo accept at least some types of digital cameras, laptops, MP3 players, GPS devices, camcorders and gaming consoles. Gazelle also accepts cellphones. But they don&#8217;t take everything. Gazelle doesn&#8217;t take LCD TVs and VenJuvo doesn&#8217;t accept satellite radios and portable hard drives or any smartphones or cellphones other than the iPhone; neither accepts desktop PCs.</p>
<p>I took the closest look at newly released Gazelle, owned by Second Rotation Inc., and walked through the simple start-to-finish process of selling a gadget and receiving money from the site. After pulling up the site, people can find their product and its value by choosing from a list of nine categories or by typing some part of the product&#8217;s name into a search box.</p>
<p>I sold Gazelle a first-generation iPod Mini with four gigabytes of memory for which my boss paid $249 in 2004. I answered a few questions about the product: Yes, it still powered on; no, I didn&#8217;t have the original AC adapter, manuals or software installation CD, and it was in &#8220;excellent&#8221; condition, according to my assessment. Gazelle placed its value at $25.</p>
<p>At this step, I opted to add the iPod to my box and check out, but users can also add other items to a box, including electronics for recycling. Gazelle&#8217;s policy is that it pays 100% of shipping costs for any box shipped to the company, so long as there&#8217;s at least one item in the box worth $1. Eighty percent of transactions qualify for a free box; the rest can be sent with printed-out prepaid shipping labels, but you must find packaging.</p>
<p>Gazelle lets users receive payments via a mailed, paper check or using PayPal; money is received either way within five business days. People can also donate their money to one of 23 causes, including the American Red Cross and World Vision. I opted for PayPal, and the $25 amount was deposited shortly after Gazelle received the iPod.</p>
<p>I sent the old iPod to Gazelle in a brightly colored, empty box that arrives at a customer&#8217;s door a few days after he or she sells the device to Gazelle. I secured the old iPod in the box using balled up paper, and sealed it with packing tape. A prepaid shipping label was already stuck to it, and I needed only drop it off at UPS.</p>
<p>If Gazelle receives a product and decides that it isn&#8217;t worth what you said it was &#8212; either more or less &#8212; and you&#8217;d rather not sell, the company will ship the product back, free of charge. But while Gazelle&#8217;s site guarantees users that they&#8217;ll receive their money, and that personal data are safe with the company, no money-back guarantee is offered.</p>
<p>Gazelle hopes to calm nerves by posting detailed instructions on the site about how to wipe a device of all private information. But the company hasn&#8217;t yet done this, and numerous users will remain skeptical even with such instructions.</p>
<p>I also poked around on VenJuvo Inc.&#8217;s Web site of the same name, <a href="http://www.VenJuvo.com" rel="external">www.VenJuvo.com</a>, which is derived from two Greek words meaning &#8220;support, assist and delight sellers,&#8221; according to the company. This site, too, buys products back from people, though it pays via check, PayPal or Kmart (SHLD) gift card. Users fill out similarly simple questionnaires on each product to help assess value. Unlike Gazelle&#8217;s style of mailing boxes to users, VenJuvo gives users only prepaid shipping labels to print out and stick on a box that the customer must supply.</p>
<p>One notable difference between the sites is Gazelle&#8217;s broader range of products. In the case of digital cameras, for example, Gazelle accepts 80 brands while VenJuvo takes only Canon (CAJ), Sony (SNE), Olympus and Kodak (EK). Unlike with Gazelle, if you send VenJuvo a product that isn&#8217;t worth what you said it was, the company won&#8217;t return the product free-of-charge; instead, it will charge you for shipping.</p>
<p>If users choose to receive a gift card, they get a 10% added value. While VenJuvo doesn&#8217;t let people donate a product&#8217;s value to a cause, it will add this feature next week and will include different causes (like Ronald McDonald House and Big Brothers Big Sisters) than those found on Gazelle.</p>
<p>Unlike Gazelle, VenJuvo will always take items for recycling and will pay for the shipping, regardless of whether you traded something in for a value.</p>
<p>A useful resource for general electronics recycling is the Consumer Electronics Association Web site, <a href="http://www.MyGreenElectronics.org" rel="external">www.MyGreenElectronics.org</a>, which locates nearby electronics-recycling centers according to ZIP Code. And almost every computer manufacturer has a recycling program in place; some will even recycle computers that aren&#8217;t their own brand.</p>
<p>One way or another, it&#8217;s time to clean out the old junk drawer. Just be sure to do some comparison shopping if you want money for your old products.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Search, by nature, doesn&#8217;t need to be overly exciting stuff. It usually involves typing a word in a box, pressing enter and reading results to find the best one &#8212; and this style works well for plenty of people, as is evidenced by Google&#8217;s success. But many would like to see search become smarter, more intuitive or even visually stimulating.</p>

<p>This week, I tested two applications that turn searching into feasts for the eyes. Instead of showing search results in lines of text, these results are visually based. One, called SpaceTime, displays search results in three-dimensional views that make images look as if they are flying onto the screen. The other, an actual search engine called Searchme, spreads image results out in fan-like patterns. Both SpaceTime and Searchme encourage people to search by choosing what looks visually familiar or accurate, rather than trying to discern what the text in a link might mean.</p>
<p>The idea of improved search isn&#8217;t a new one. Many have tried, ranging from Ask.com&#8217;s media-rich result pages to Mahalo.com&#8217;s human-powered search engine. But Google&#8217;s (GOOG) simplicity and experience have made it hard to beat, and competitors know the importance of relevant and reliable results. Rather than comparing these sites with the big G, I looked at them as add-ons that could be especially useful for certain searches.</p>
<p>Searchme, a search engine built from the ground up, is technically in private beta &#8212; meaning that it is still a work in progress and users must be invited to use it. The company gave me access to the site and created a link so that readers of this column could also use it: <a href="http://www.searchme.com/wsj" rel="external">www.searchme.com/wsj</a>. This Web-based tool works on Windows and Mac operating systems and in any major browser, and it tries to improve search by asking users to choose a category for their search terms.</p>
<p>For instance, when I typed &#8220;US Open&#8221; in the Searchme box, categories appeared to the right, including Tennis, Squash, Gambling &amp; Casinos and Golf. Since I was looking for the tennis-related grand slam, I chose the Tennis category and saved myself some typing. The more I used Searchme, the more I came to rely on these categories for faster, more-refined results.</p>

<p>Searchme&#8217;s visual search works by displaying snapshots of Web sites, each of which has the search term highlighted on its page. These pages fan out from the center to look like Cover Flow in <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=AAPL'>Apple</a> Inc.&#8217;s (AAPL) iTunes, visually sorting images like album covers in a jukebox so they can be flipped through until the best Web page is found.</p>
<p>By moving a cursor along a horizontal scroll bar below these pages, I skimmed through 10 to 15 Web sites in a matter of seconds, quickly weeding out unwanted sites. But these pages don&#8217;t allow interaction like scrolling down or playing of embedded videos. A button below these images reveals a list-view where text and links relating to the images are listed, but I kept this option hidden more often than not.</p>
<p>Though Searchme&#8217;s categories are helpful and I liked using visual searching, I did notice many more results, overall, while performing searches through Google and Yahoo (YHOO). A Google search for the Regency Hotel in New York City returned accurate links to the hotel&#8217;s Web site &#8212; and a map. Searchme&#8217;s first result was a defunct Web page for the Regency, and the younger search engine doesn&#8217;t yet have maps, news or stock quotes like Google.</p>
<p>Settings can be adjusted for Searchme, including one option to filter out adult content and another to open up new windows whenever a Web page is selected, so as not to lose the current page.</p>
<p>SpaceTime (<a href="http://www.spacetime.com" rel="external">www.spacetime.com</a>) differs from Searchme in that it doesn&#8217;t try to be its own search engine. Instead, it is a browser that works with established search engines and Web sites. It isn&#8217;t Web-based, like Searchme, and must be downloaded to a Windows (MSFT) PC (it doesn&#8217;t yet work on Macs). The intense 3-D graphics of this program work best on a computer with at least one gigabyte of system memory and 256 megabytes of dedicated video memory.</p>
<p>At first glance, SpaceTime appears to be a normal browser. It has the usual URL line where specific Web sites can be entered and a search box at the top right that can be set to search Google, Google Images, Yahoo, Yahoo Images, eBay (EBAY), Flickr, YouTube, RSS feeds or Amazon (AMZN).</p>
<p>But using this search box starts the fun of the product. Search results appear as images lined up on the screen, floating through space and descending into the distance in a 3-D visualization akin to that of Windows Vista&#8217;s Flip 3D. SpaceTime&#8217;s dark background gives it a dramatic edge, and each object is reflected in an artistic, glass-like surface. Results can be tweaked, turned, magnified and moved within this 3-D space.</p>
<p>When I performed normal Google or Yahoo searches, the returned results appeared as images of each Web site on which the searched term appeared. When I searched for images on Google, Yahoo or Flickr, the results came back in image-only fashion &#8212; not images embedded in Web sites &#8212; that looked stunning lined up in 3-D. Searches of eBay are especially useful on SpaceTime because each item up for bid zooms onto the screen as its own object along with its current price, number of bids and remaining auction time. YouTube searches return videos lined up in SpaceTime&#8217;s 3-D environment.</p>
<p>With all of these images flying in and out of the screen, things can get a little overwhelming. One pile of search results is called a stack, and each stack is automatically saved in a dock at the bottom of the screen, labeled with a thumbnail image of where you last left off. Searches can be saved and snapshots of screens can be captured and saved in the dock.</p>
<p>To return results as fast as possible, SearchTime says it will pull up just 10 at a time for image, product and video searches, or five pages at once for content-heavy sites. But in my tests, using two different Vista computers with 2GB of RAM each, I usually never saw more than five results at a time. The next five or 10 images can be retrieved by choosing a &#8220;Next Set&#8221; button at the bottom of the screen.</p>
<p>On-screen Web sites and objects are interactive, meaning that I could scroll down within a Web page or play a YouTube video within the SpaceTime screen. A clever magnifying glass pops up on the screen to pinpoint the original search term on each page.</p>
<p>SpaceTime allowed me to rapidly flip through tens or even hundreds of images and Web sites in a very short time, but it wasn&#8217;t perfect. Some search results took a while to load, only displaying the first object while the other lined-up objects appeared as empty frames because they were still loading. YouTube seemed sluggish and wasn&#8217;t as easy to navigate as some other searches, and Flickr was especially slow to load in a few of my tests.</p>
<p>SpaceTime is working on a Web-based version that won&#8217;t rely so heavily on each user&#8217;s PC specs, and Searchme is still in its testing phase, working to return more relevant results. But for now, these two sites turn search into a different, much more visually stimulating experience. After using these programs for a little while, I started to search differently &#8212; moving through results faster and clicking on fewer links that returned unwanted results. Though I&#8217;ll still rely on Google for basic searches, visual search can save time and turn searching into a fun process.</p>

<p>Two of the biggest phenomena in pop culture have been the &#8220;American Idol&#8221; TV show and the plethora of Web sites that depend on user-generated content, such as eBay, Craigslist.org and YouTube.com. People love to try out for &#8220;Idol,&#8221; and to vote for those who make it. And they love to submit entries to Web sites.</p>
<p>So, what if you could combine those two forms and create performance contests on the Web instead of on TV? That way, anyone could enter, or vote, or even create a contest, without the need for a TV network, judges or any other barriers.</p>
<p>This week, we had a fun time testing a Web site that does just that. The free site, called Bix.com, officially launched today. It hosts contests that include &#8220;American Idol&#8221;-style stuff like singing, but can range beyond that into comedy, photography, art, lip-synching or even writing.</p>

<p>The Bix strategy is rather simple: You can either create a contest yourself or participate in an existing contest, and Bix members can vote for you using a thumbs-up or thumbs-down icon. All you need to view entries and vote is a computer connected to the Web. To enter the singing or comedy contests, only a Web camera and microphone are required &#8212; devices that are increasingly being built into new computers.</p>
<p>We fooled around with the Bix.com Web site, creating contests of our own, joining existing contests, voting for participants and easily emailing links for certain entertaining entries to our friends. Each process &#8212; signing up, creating a contest, entering a contest &#8212; only takes a minute. This means you can pay full attention to the site&#8217;s entertainment factor, and we think this will make users really enjoy using it.</p>
<p>Currently, the Bix Web site is ad-free, depending for revenue solely on corporate-sponsored contests, which run alongside contests users can start at no charge. These contests are created when a company pays Bix to use its site to host a competition, and the contest winner gets a cash prize paid by the sponsor &#8212; not Bix. (Normal contests needn&#8217;t carry a prize, and most don&#8217;t.) Bix says it will seek alternative revenue sources, including advertisements on its site and user-generated ringtones &#8212; yes, this could mean hearing yourself sing when your cellphone rings.</p>
<p>Some contestants were truly talented, while others definitely should keep their day jobs. The types of contests revealed some of the creativity that Bix is tapping, including a beauty contest for &#8220;Cutest Pet,&#8221; a photography contest for &#8220;Funniest Sign&#8221; and a comedy contest for the funniest 60-second act. Anyone can view the Bix contest entries, but only Bix users can vote or add comments about an entry.</p>

<p>Bix provides the tools for lip-synching and karaoke competitions: music and lyrics for about 2,100 songs are loaded on the site and can appear on-screen, karaoke-style, while you sing along. A built-in application automatically opens to record audio and/or video using Mac or Windows operating systems and their browsers &#8212; Mozilla FireFox, Internet Explorer and Safari.</p>
<p>We signed up easily by entering only our email address, a Bix user name and a password. The site offers simple options to enter or create a contest. If you choose to enter a contest a list is opened, revealing all existing contests (past contests also can be accessed). These were organized in a smart email-like format with a preview screen below so as to display thumbnail images of the entries for a selected contest.</p>
<p>Walt found and entered a photography contest called &#8220;Cars!&#8221; that was filled with 13 different images by simply choosing an Enter Contest option, uploading a photo of his favorite car, and adding a title and description of his photo. In a second, his image appeared alongside the others in the contest, where anyone could see it and other users could vote or comment on it. Now, images on the Bix Web site can&#8217;t be enlarged by selecting them, but Bix hopes to improve this.</p>
<p>Voting can be done by selecting an up or down thumb image near the contest&#8217;s description, and positive results are shown after you vote (each user is limited to one vote). Here, you can see the user names of those who vote positively for your entry. Your user profile, on another page, will show you a tally of the negative votes for contests that you&#8217;ve entered, but not the names of the users who gave you negative votes. We can understand that Bix wouldn&#8217;t want to reveal the negative voters by name so as to keep the peace on its site.</p>
<p>Katie also entered a contest called Lip-sync Idol, lip-synching to Celine Dion&#8217;s passionate song &#8220;I Drove All Night&#8221; using an iMac G5 with an Apple iSight camera on top. The software program within Bix automatically turned the iSight on and Katie could see the words and an image of her video recording as she went. She was able to play it back or rerecord it afterward before submitting it to Bix for the contest.</p>
<p>The problem with Web cameras is that even expert lip-synchers might look bad because of audio transmitting faster than visual movement. This happened at a few spots in Katie&#8217;s recording and in that of other users in the contest, making their lip movements look a beat behind the audio.</p>
<p>Creating our own contest was uncomplicated, too. We chose from a list of formats that included lip-synch, karaoke, dance, a cappella, comedy, art, photography, beauty, writing and other. Next, we chose whether to keep our contest private, by entering a limited list of email addresses, or to open it to the public. We then gave our contest a title (Scenic Photography) and a brief description before setting the start and end dates.</p>
<p>At any time, you can select your user name from the top right corner of the Bix.com site to see information about your profile, the contests you&#8217;ve entered and the contests you&#8217;ve started. You can also remove an entry when you don&#8217;t want it online anymore. Another option allows you to export your entry to your MySpace page or other Web site, so everyone can see your talent &#8212; not just those voting on Bix.com.</p>
<p>For now, winning a contest started by a regular user &#8212; not a corporation &#8212; just means earning satisfaction. But users who have created some contests already are giving away prizes of their own. Bix just announced a karaoke contest of its own with a $50,000 cash prize.</p>
<p>If you think you&#8217;re talented, or if you get a laugh just looking at those who think they are, you&#8217;ll enjoy Bix.com. It&#8217;s easy to get the hang of, and it has a lot of potential to expand. We think people of all ages with enjoy this user-friendly Web site.</p>
