			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Finding TV shows online can be a major hassle. If you can remember which network hosts the show, you then must hunt through a maze of listings of several other television shows on that network&#8217;s Web site to find it. The show you want to watch might not even be available since many networks rotate only a handful of recent episodes online at a time. And if you do finally find the correct episode, you may be required to download a special media player to watch it.</p>
<p>Some services make this process a little easier. Hulu holds episodes from 1,200 television shows, but is still missing many. Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) iTunes Store offers over 50,000 episodes, but unlike network sites or Hulu, it requires viewers to pay to download and watch them (though they are commercial-free). Video search engines like Truveo browse the entire Web, returning an often-overwhelming number of results. And while YouTube is the king of Web video, it can too easily return a search result that isn&#8217;t a complete and genuine episode of the show you&#8217;re seeking. </p>

<p>This week, I&#8217;ve been testing <a href="http://www.Clicker.com">Clicker</a>, a free Web site that aims to be the TV Guide for all full episodes available to watch on the Web. It searches over 1,200 sources, so it can index some 400,000 episodes from 7,000 shows. Results include television programs as well as &#8220;Web originals,&#8221; or shows that are native to the Internet and are of broadcast quality. Clicker either plays the video on its site or links you to where this content is shown on another hosting site—like NBC or Hulu. If a show isn&#8217;t available online, Clicker tells you so you don&#8217;t have to keep hunting all over for it. </p>
<p>I like Clicker and found it to be a quick resource for finding all sorts of shows online. In many cases, it directed me to find the episodes I wanted to watch and saved me the hassle of less efficient searching. It also suggested shows I might like and offered a playlist where I could subscribe to receive episodes as they became available or save available videos to watch later. </p>

<p>Clicker makes descriptive pages about each show</p></div>
<p>Though it has a search box, Clicker feels more like a directory than purely a robotic search engine that relies mainly on algorithms. In fact, Clicker created a descriptive page for almost every show, and these pages can be edited or created via user submissions, which Clicker will review before posting them to the site. And because it&#8217;s focused on TV shows or Web originals, it won&#8217;t clutter your results with kids&#8217; birthday parties or cats on skateboards.</p>
<p>The site is still rather new, so it has some kinks to work out—like links to videos that didn&#8217;t actually play if, for example, they were pulled by the network. But these were rare, and for the most part, if a video wasn&#8217;t available, a clear, brief explanation was displayed at the top of the page. Also, if Clicker sends you back out to a network&#8217;s site and that network uses a special player for videos, you&#8217;ll still have to download that player.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Filtering Results</h5>
<p>Clicker&#8217;s program pages contain a description of the show, and a way to filter results by season, airdate or popularity. And the site shows the actual airdate of each video—something that not many other sites do. A column on the right side of each page displays several related shows, like the suggestion of &#8220;Modern Family&#8221; for fans of &#8220;How I Met Your Mother&#8221;; and &#8220;Roswell&#8221; and &#8220;Dead Like Me&#8221; suggested for people who like &#8220;Heroes.&#8221; In December, these recommendations will become even more personalized.</p>
<p>Some of Clicker&#8217;s sources include NBC, Fox, ABC, PBS, the Food Network and Web original content (i.e. &#8220;The Onion&#8221;). It also can search movies and music videos; the movies can be watched free in some cases, or paid for via Amazon&#8217;s (AMZN) Video on Demand or Netflix (NFLX) Instant Streaming. In January, Clicker plans to incorporate shows and movies from iTunes, using Apple&#8217;s pay-and-download method. </p>
<p>Clicker is especially handy when you&#8217;re looking for a show that isn&#8217;t where you think it should be. &#8220;Seinfeld,&#8221; for example, is on TBS rather than NBC, where it originally aired, and only nine episodes are available at once before they rotate out and are replaced by nine more. &#8220;Friends&#8221; is found on <a href="http://www.theWB.com">theWB.com</a>, rather than on NBC&#8217;s site. &#8220;Damages&#8221; isn&#8217;t available on its network site, FX; instead, it can be found at <a href="http://www.Crackle.com">Crackle.com</a>, another video-hosting site. It&#8217;s easy to understand why people settle for missing an episode rather than trying to find a show online. </p>

<p>Clicker also comes in handy when you&#8217;re querying something or someone you need to learn about. By typing in a term like &#8220;Thanksgiving travel,&#8221; I get news results from NBC&#8217;s &#8220;Nightly News with Brian Williams,&#8221; the &#8220;CBS Evening News&#8221; and the Associated Press. I also get tips for traveling during this busy time of year from an AOL Travel online video, as well as a 1968 episode of &#8220;The Beverly Hillbillies&#8221; called &#8220;The Thanksgiving Spirit.&#8221; </p>
<p>Clicker isn&#8217;t the site to use if you want to find the hot video clip that everyone is watching. When I searched for &#8220;Whitney Houston&#8221; the morning after the American Music Awards, the most recent video I found was the singer performing on &#8220;Good Morning America&#8221; in September—not the one showing her singing during the awards show the night before. </p>
<p>But the fact that Clicker can find Whitney Houston on &#8220;Good Morning America&#8221; is useful in itself. A search for Warren Buffett&#8217;s most recent appearance on the &#8220;Charlie Rose&#8221; show can be conducted in a similar manner—either by typing his name into the box at the top of the page or by opening the show&#8217;s page and searching within that show for anyone who has appeared as a guest. Performing a search within a show like this anywhere else is nowhere near as easy as on Clicker. </p>
<h5 class="subhed">Playlist of Your Shows</h5>
<p>Clicker can be used as a TiVo (TIVO) of sorts if you create a username on the site or simply sign in using Facebook Connect, which I did. </p>
<p>Users can make playlists where they can add just one episode, all episodes, or new episodes to this list—subscribing to receive all new episodes in the playlist as they become available. I added episodes of &#8220;The Amazing Race&#8221; and &#8220;It&#8217;s Always Sunny in Philadelphia&#8221; to my playlist. This list can be accessed anytime, and it&#8217;s helpful for people who don&#8217;t have enough time to watch a show that they found. In December, email and Facebook notifications will be added to tell users that new episodes are in their playlists.</p>
<p>If you spend a lot of time in front of your computer and find yourself searching all over the Web for the TV shows you&#8217;d like to watch, Clicker will be a huge help. And even if your show isn&#8217;t available, you might find something similar—or better—in Clicker&#8217;s recommendations. </p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>It’s hard to maintain a monogamous relationship with one photo-sharing Web site. You will sign up with a service and use it as your primary online repository for a while. You may even familiarize friends and family with that service so they expect to see your name associated with it in emails. But before long, other sites with flashier features will entice you to start spending time with them while you continue to maintain your accounts on the old site so you don’t lose your digital memories. Can’t they all just get along in one place?  </p>
<p>This week, I tested <a href="http://www.thisMoment.com">thisMoment.com</a>—a content-sharing Web site that doesn’t mind if you use multiple sharing sites. It acknowledges your accounts on other sites and the fact that you have probably loaded a bunch of photos or videos onto those sites. It even recognizes that you likely still want to remain connected to those services. In fact, thisMoment is made better by your relationships with these other sites. And the service also makes it easy to incorporate into your account material created by others—even strangers.</p>

<p>Anyone can use thisMoment.com the old-fashioned way, by uploading personal content and building “moments” (collections of related content) to share with friends. But thanks to thisMoment’s ties to other sharing sites, users may opt to add others’ publicly shared materials like videos, photos and articles to a moment, making it richer and more interesting. This content can come from sources like Flickr, Picasa, YouTube, Facebook—even Life Magazine photos and MTV videos can be interspersed throughout a moment. The Moment Maker tool quickly scans sites for relevant content to add to the moment.</p>
<p>This week, the service introduced an iPhone app for making moments on the go and a Facebook app for creating moments within Facebook. I tried both, in addition to using the thisMoment.com site, and found that resulting moments looked like they took a lot more time and effort to make than they actually did. </p>
<p>ThisMoment’s secret sauce is in its elegant displays. It takes all sorts of content—text, photos, videos—from various sources and meshes it into a handsome slideshow that flows from one visual to the next. Black backgrounds dramatically frame photos and videos, and captions stand out in brightly colored text. Maps from Google (GOOG) pinpoint exactly where the moment took place and a list names other people who were in the moment.</p>
<p>And when you’re all done creating your moment, thisMoment doesn’t mind sharing your final project with others using still more social-networking tools like Twitter, Facebook and some 45 Web publishing sites—if your privacy settings are set for sharing.</p>
<p>For some people, the idea of integrating other online content into their personal moments could be a turn-off. I wasn’t initially sure I would want someone else’s content mixed in with photos and videos I took, or vice versa. And I still wish thisMoment provided a clearer way of differentiating between someone’s personal content and that which was pulled from the Web. (Currently, small print below each item tells where it came from.) </p>
<p>But there’s so much content online that it makes sense to tap these resources. And users can opt to make moments without external content. </p>

<p>Rather than just slapping photos on to a Web site where people can see them, thisMoment asks its users to check off descriptive words—or enter their own—to explain how the moment made them feel. Though I originally scoffed at these add-your-own emotions, I later grew to like them when I looked back at my moments and those created by other people. They give these online creations a personal touch that isn’t conveyed in other photo-sharing software programs or Web sites. </p>
<p>Another thisMoment differentiator is its sense of time. You can create moments for things that happen in the past, present or future, like an upcoming wedding or birth, and a timeline at the top of the Web site shows where these moments fit in, according to their dates. If you share a moment with someone who is labeled as being in that moment, she can “seize” the moment, adding it to her own timeline. ThisMoment also encourages you to rate your moments on a scale of small to big according to how much they matter to you, though I often forgot to do this, and to label your moments so they can be organized into different categories.</p>
<p>I soon got the hang of how to use thisMoment to supplement my moments when I didn’t have enough content to create something worth sharing. When I attended a folk rock concert at the Embassy of the Czech Republic here in Washington, D.C., I only captured a few so-so photographs and wouldn’t have otherwise shared any visual memories from the evening with friends. But I used the Moment Maker to troll the Web for content related to Czechomor, the band I saw, and found live concert videos, as well as professional photographs, an online biography of the band and a link to where the group’s album was sold on Amazon.com (AMZN). I used this content and one of my own photos, and made a simple moment in a few minutes. (<a href="http://www.thismoment.com/moment/view/31474/czech-embassy-concert">Check out my moment</a>.)  </p>
<p>Likewise, friends of mine recently hosted a murder-mystery dinner, but we were so busy staying in character that we took only one photo of the entire evening. I used that photo of me and my costumed friends as the inspiration for creating a moment filled with photos and videos of murder-mystery dinners from all over. This content came from sites like Photobucket, Picasa, Flickr and YouTube, and I laughed at the number of people who wore stick-on moustaches in these photos.</p>
<p>ThisMoment allows anyone with whom you share a moment to see that moment without signing up for the service. If that person is included in the moment, meaning the creator labeled him or her as a person who participated in the moment, then that person can add his or her own content to the moment—as long as that person signs up as a member of the site. </p>
<p>A variety of privacy options let you restrict who can see your moments—just you, friends, family, people in the moment or everyone. If a moment is set so everyone can see it, they can also use your content in their moments. </p>
<p>You may not always want to use thisMoment to incorporate content from other services and Web sites. But even without outside influences, this service’s stunning visual displays will give your moments a polished look that makes you proud to share. </p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Web video has transformed the way the Internet is used, but finding the exact clip you want can be incredibly hard. And it&#8217;s no wonder, considering that sites like YouTube conduct their hunts by looking at a clip&#8217;s &#8220;contextual metadata&#8221; &#8212; tags, video title and description &#8212; and thus can often be misled by false information. For example, a homemade video about cooking might be inaccurately tagged with a popular search word like &#8220;Obama&#8221; so as to get more traction.</p>

<p>This week I tested <a href="http://VideoSurf.com" rel="external">VideoSurf.com</a>, a site that claims to be the first to search videos by &#8220;seeing&#8221; images that appear in these videos. The company says its technology can analyze a clip&#8217;s visual content, as well as its metadata &#8212; especially when searching for people. VideoSurf has analyzed and categorized more than 12 billion visual moments on the Web to understand who the most important characters and scenes are in a video, and it uses this knowledge to sort clips according to relevancy.</p>
<p>Search results on VideoSurf spread out videos in a filmstrip-like format, distinguishing one scene from the next. Users can choose an option to show only faces, which helps if you&#8217;re looking for a specific person in a long video or movie. And when looking at videos from certain sources, you can select a scene from the filmstrip and jump ahead to that scene rather than sit through the entire clip.</p>
<p>When it works, VideoSurf is one of those technologies that make you wonder why someone didn&#8217;t think of it sooner. The site aggregates content from about 60 sources, including YouTube, CNN Video, Hulu, ESPN and Comedy Central, and a sorting tool weeds out unwanted results like the irksome slideshows that are labeled as videos. VideoSurf can find videos on all kinds of subjects, but it really shines when it finds well-known people.</p>
<p>But VideoSurf has some rough edges and doesn&#8217;t always work as it should. In its defense, the site is still in its public beta, or trial, stage, and plans to be full-blown by early next year. Right now, one of its best features, the ability to jump ahead to specific scenes, works with video from only a handful of sources including YouTube, MetaCafe, DailyMotion and Google (GOOG) Video. Videos from Hulu.com confusingly allow jumping ahead only from certain screens.</p>
<p>Additionally, I came across a couple of videos that were no longer available, though they were listed in search results. And a customizable VideoSurf home page for users with accounts on the site saves searches but not specific clips; VideoSurf plans to fix this next week by adding a favorites page where users can store and share favorite videos with others.</p>
<p>Still, I really grew to like VideoSurf&#8217;s clear way of displaying content that would be otherwise buried within videos. Rather than trying to guess a video&#8217;s contents by looking at a single representative image, VideoSurf&#8217;s filmstrip views showed me exactly what I&#8217;d be watching. In many cases, I viewed a video I might not have otherwise watched because its filmstrip showed shots of scenes that looked interesting.</p>
<p>On the left-hand side of the search-results page, VideoSurf users can narrow results according to Content Type, Categories and Video Sources to see just what they&#8217;re looking for &#8212; or, often more important, what they&#8217;re not looking for. Content Type, for example, includes slideshows, Web series, full television episodes and full movies; a search can include only videos in a particular category (say, slideshows) or exclude that category altogether by unmarking the box beside it.</p>
<p>Most search-results pages include tiled still images at the top representing the characters in the videos. By selecting one of these characters, users can refine search results to show only videos with that character. For example, I typed the title of a favorite television show, &#8220;Brothers and Sisters,&#8221; into the search box and saw the names and images of seven actors on the show at the top of the screen. I selected Sally Field and was redirected to results of videos featuring only the mother she plays on the show.</p>
<p>I used VideoSurf to search for Beyonce&#8217;s &#8220;Single Ladies&#8221; music video, and then changed the date parameters to find only videos posted this week. This retrieved a Saturday Night Live skit in which the pop singer spoofs her own video with help from three men in tights &#8212; including Justin Timberlake. While the SNL skit ran, a list of related videos appeared in a column on the right, including clips of J.T.&#8217;s past SNL skits.</p>
<p>Occasionally, annotations appear on videos, but these come from the source &#8212; not VideoSurf. If overlaid text appears on YouTube videos, it can be turned off using an icon in the bottom right of the YouTube screen. Video-sharing sites that use introductory pages such as pre-rolls before each video will still show those pages.</p>
<p>VideoSurf makes it easy to send specific clips of videos to friends. I did so by selecting a Share option and adjusting slide bars to trim the clip to start and end at scenes I preferred. Clips shared with friends via email are sent with the VideoSurf filmstrip, giving others the ability to also know what the video will include so that they, too, can discern whether or not they want to watch it.</p>
<p>Clips can be shared on social-networking sites like del.icio.us, MySpace and Facebook, though VideoSurf&#8217;s helpful filmstrip didn&#8217;t show up on these sites like it did in emails.</p>
<p>I also tested an add-on for the Mozilla Firefox browser called Greasemonkey that works with VideoSurf. When installed, this displays VideoSurf&#8217;s helpful filmstrip beneath search results from Google Video, YouTube, Yahoo (YHOO) or CBS.com (CBS). Once installed, filmstrips illustrating important scenes appear along with the normal text results for videos, and some of the filmstrips enable jumping ahead to specific scenes. This somewhat techie Greasemonkey extension can save people the extra step of making a separate visit to VideoSurf.com to watch a specific clip.</p>
<p>VideoSurf uses smart technology that can save people the aggravation of watching videos that aren&#8217;t what they appear to be. Since so much Web content now includes videos, a visual search tool that can better assess videos like VideoSurf is a good idea. When this site improves its now-flaky ability to jump ahead to specific scenes in videos, it will be even more valuable.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Wouldn&#8217;t it be great if, after attending an event &#8212; like a wedding &#8212; at which friends and family took digital photos and videos, everyone could contribute to the same online album? It would be even better if everyone could access the album through a simple email invitation instead of having to create yet another log-in profile.</p>
<p>The once-frustrating process of sharing digital photos and videos has noticeably improved over the past year, thanks to seamless Web-based programs that work like desktop applications. But many of these sites give all the power to whoever created the album, leaving invited guests to simply look at photos or add comments.</p>

<p>This week I tested shwup (<a href="http://www.shwup.com" rel="external">www.shwup.com</a>), a free Web-based application that&#8217;s available starting Wednesday from muvee Technologies and works as described above with only a few pitfalls. The concept is simple: Anyone who signs up for a shwup account can create an album filled with digital photos and videos, and this album can be shared with anyone else via email whether they have a shwup account or not. Recipients of these email invitations can click on an embedded link to view and add content to the album. Or users can completely skip visiting the site and instantly upload content by replying to the email invitation with attached photos and videos.</p>
<p>Muvee Technologies is best known for selling software that automatically creates short movies, or muvees, by blending digital videos and photos with music and transitions. Muvee&#8217;s namesake technology is a part of the free shwup site; a few muvees are automatically generated in each of the albums and everyone who is invited to the album can create muvees using its content. But shwup&#8217;s main focus is making sharing easier for everyone. It differs from most of the company&#8217;s software programs in that it&#8217;s free and completely Web-based.</p>
<p>A shwup album takes just a few minutes to set up and even less time to share. It works on Microsoft&#8217;s (MSFT) Internet Explorer and Mozilla&#8217;s Firefox 2.0 and 3.0 browsers but won&#8217;t work on Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) Safari until the fall. Shwup is available Wednesday but is still technically in its beta, or testing, phase, and I ran into a few kinks. I had trouble getting its useful reply-to-email uploading capability to work when two friends and I tried to upload content to my album using attachments in email replies. My friends had to visit the site to upload content. Muvee couldn&#8217;t figure out what went wrong when I asked the company about it.</p>
<p>I did, however, add content to someone else&#8217;s album using the reply-to-email method, uploading a digital photo in seconds. And in another instance I received a shwup email invitation on my BlackBerry and replied to it with an attached photo, which &#8212; in seconds &#8212; sent that photo from my BlackBerry to the specified shwup album.</p>

<p>A glaring omission from shwup is the ability to view photos in full-screen view, a feature that most photo-sharing programs offer in slideshow mode. A friend of mine said he would use shwup over other photo-sharing Web sites that require user names and passwords if only it had full-screen photos. Muvee recognizes this as one of shwup&#8217;s biggest issues and says it will add this feature in August.</p>
<p>I uploaded over 60 high-resolution digital photos into my first shwup album, noting that the only limitation on files is that no individual file can be larger than 100 megabytes. These images can come from your computer, Flickr, Facebook or any Web site. Out of curiosity, I plugged www.cnn.com into the Web site entry box and shwup automatically grabbed images from the site that were available for me to use. I checked two of the images and they were added to my album in seconds.</p>
<p>Shwup automatically made and added three muvees to my album, using my photos put to music it chooses with dramatically timed transitions. These short clips looked really well-done, and were labeled as &#8220;sample muvees&#8221; so as not to be confused with my content. I followed a few simple steps to create a muvee of my own for the album by dragging photos into a tray, choosing from seven different layout styles and a handful of stock music licensed by shwup.</p>
<p>An option lets you upload your own music to play with your muvee, which I did. Seconds later, my homemade muvee played with transitions that were perfectly timed to the beats of a Fountains of Wayne song. After filling an album with digital photos, videos and muvees that I made, I invited friends to my album using emails generated from shwup.com. Within each album, a clear list of whoever was invited to the album can be seen on the top right side of the page. If someone hasn&#8217;t shared content yet, he or she can be &#8220;poked&#8221; by anyone invited to the album, sending them yet another email invitation.</p>
<p>Everyone invited to an album receives notifications from shwup whenever someone contributed content to the album and everyone can change the layout of the album to one of three settings: Grid, Simple or Mosaic. Moving my cursor over an album&#8217;s images showed data about each file including who contributed the photo or video, when it was captured and how many comments it had received in the album. (Comments are readable after clicking on an image to see a bigger version of it.)</p>
<p>Digital videos are labeled with small Play icons to distinguish them from digital still images. But a friend who uploaded a video to my album pointed out that the still image representing his video was a gray square rather than a still of the first scene as it did with the other videos &#8212; perhaps because this is where the camera was focused at the start of the video. Without an image to illustrate what the video was, it wasn&#8217;t as appealing as the other videos and images. Muvee explained that the ability to select a still image to represent a video was available in its pay software, but not yet in shwup, though the company plans to add this to shwup in the future.</p>
<p>Another hitch: If you invite someone to your album and then add something to the album you&#8217;d rather they not see, you can&#8217;t un-invite the person. Muvee says it plans to add the ability to un-invite members in July. Individual contributors have the ability to delete or &#8220;unshare&#8221; the content that they added to an album, while album creators can unshare and delete all pictures or entire albums. Album creators also are given the authority to merge albums.</p>
<p>Along with shwup, muvee also announces a new version of its downloadable pay software Wednesday: muvee Reveal. This $100 software has much more detailed features that specifically tweak your videos to become extra personalized.</p>
<p>When it works, shwup serves as a neat, artistic way to share photos quickly. Friends and family will be relieved that it doesn&#8217;t require any forgettable usernames and passwords, and the email-uploading tool will make anyone who knows how to attach something to an email feel like he or she can contribute to a photo-sharing Web site without a second thought. After shwup adds its full-screen photo-viewing option and clears up the glitches of its email-uploading feature, I&#8217;ll be using shwup for many group events to come.</p>

		<description><![CDATA[It's not always easy to learn from the information you find online, and how-to videos can be a big help--especially when they're well-made and discoverable using sites featuring instructional clips.]]></description>
			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>If there&#8217;s a skill or process you want to learn or know more about, chances are there&#8217;s an online video for it. These days you can find a video that will teach you to cook, survive college, build your own headphones or even become a better kisser.</p>
<p>This week, I took a look at just a few Web sites that make finding these videos easy, including Howcast Media Inc.&#8217;s <a href="http://Howcast.com" rel="external">Howcast.com</a>, <a href="http://WonderHowTo.com" rel="external">WonderHowTo.com</a> from WonderHowTo Inc. and eHow Inc.&#8217;s <a href="http://eHow.com" rel="external">eHow.com</a>. Howcast.com, which launched in February, encourages users to make and share good-quality, entertaining videos by providing tools on its site, and has about 5,000 videos so far. WonderHowTo.com, launched in January, used a different strategy by aggregating over 110,000 videos from various sources &#8212; including Howcast, YouTube and Scripps Networks (SSP) &#8212; rather than publishing its own content. EHow, a site that started in 1999 with text-only content, contains over 100,000 instructional articles submitted by its users or eHow editors, and has a small catalog of videos.</p>

<p>After testing each of these sites, I found that my favorite how-to videos had steps that were clearly labeled and numbered and the ability to fast forward to or play back specific parts in the video &#8212; tools that Howcast included in almost all of its videos. At least some of the videos on the three sites simply illustrate things you could likely figure out how to do without watching a video, such as &#8220;How to Make Green Beer.&#8221; (Add food coloring.) Howcast.com and WonderHowTo both require users to sign in, which confirms their date of birth, before looking at what they consider &#8220;mature&#8221; content.</p>
<p>These three free sites are advertisement-supported, and Howcast&#8217;s ads run alongside videos. WonderHowTo.com runs ads at the top and side of its own site, on which it will play certain videos. But because videos on WonderHowTo come from other sources, those other sites can show video-embedded ads according to their rules. EHow&#8217;s videos run pop-up text advertisements displaying names and links of other related (and sometimes unrelated) Web sites. But I couldn&#8217;t get the pop-up ads to stay closed.</p>
<p>Overall, I preferred the look of Howcast&#8217;s site and its well-organized videos. But its content paled in comparison to WonderHowTo&#8217;s 110,000 videos and even eHow&#8217;s 100,000 instructional articles. WonderHowTo.com does a nice job of gathering content from across the Web, though the inconsistencies of other sites (including advertisements, layout and video player) were a bit frustrating. EHow&#8217;s articles were useful, as were its few videos, but I couldn&#8217;t get over the site&#8217;s unyielding video pop-up ads.</p>
<p>Howcast.com&#8217;s content was informative with an amusing edge, including a video titled &#8220;How to Tell If Your Boyfriend&#8217;s A Psycho.&#8221; (If he calls 50 times a day, for example.) Other videos on the site are more serious, like &#8220;How to Make Sushi&#8221; by an executive sushi chef in New York City.</p>
<p>The founders of Howcast Media formerly worked in Google&#8217;s (GOOG) video department, including during the acquisition of YouTube. All of Howcast&#8217;s content comes from one of four sources: written and produced by Howcast in its studios; emerging filmmakers who apply and are accepted into the Howcast Directors Program to receive $50 a video and 50% of the advertising revenue generated from videos that generate over 40,000 views on the site; content partners like Popular Science; and Howcast users&#8217; personal how-to videos.</p>
<p>In order to make it easier for average users to upload better-looking videos, Howcast provides an Upload and Enhance tool that simply and quickly adds professional-looking graphics and printable steps to go along with how-to videos. This formula makes videos more enjoyable to watch.</p>
<p>Videos made in the Howcast Studios include accompanying music, good narratives and actors who add humor to an otherwise humdrum how-to. Among its helpful features is a video player that has smart blue markers to show where facts are sprinkled throughout the video and green markers to illustrate where tips appear. For example, the fact at the end of a video for beginner guitarists called &#8220;How to Play a Basic Bar Chord&#8221; is &#8220;The late Kurt Cobain claimed he was trying to rip off the Pixies when he wrote &#8216;Smells Like Teen Spirit. &#8216;&#8221; In full-screen view, users can zoom in on any part of a video, and written-out steps and thumbnail stills of the scene appear to the right of the screen.</p>
<p>Howcast tries to run ads alongside videos that relate to the content. A video titled &#8220;How To Clean Your Dog&#8217;s Teeth&#8221; has an ad for PetSmart (PETM) Stores running on its page.</p>
<p>WonderHowTo.com was developed by a former television executive with the intention of using the site to produce its own video, like Howcast.com. Instead, WonderHowTo.com opted to tap the vast selection of how-to videos already available on the Web.</p>
<p>A Browse button pulls down 35 categories from which users can sort content, including Spirituality, Dating &amp; Relationships and Fitness. In the Fashion subcategory under Beauty &amp; Style, I found 290 videos including one on &#8220;How to Tie a Windsor Knot&#8221; and another titled &#8220;How to Turn Old Underpants Into a Bra&#8221; &#8212; neither of which I&#8217;ll be using anytime soon. Other categories include Clip of the Day, Recommendations (for users who are logged in) and Fresh, where new videos are listed. Users can grade videos to help others tell which they think are the best, and a Top Grade category compiles the top-ranked videos.</p>
<p>WonderHowTo&#8217;s content comes from over 700 sites, according to the company. I used the site to find a video on YouTube about how to do a front-flip, clips on VideoJug.com that provided terrific tennis tips from a coach, and a video from EasyBarTricks.com about how to stick a beer bottle to a wall without glue or gum. (Hint: You&#8217;ll need a corner and a wall you don&#8217;t mind marking up.) WonderHowTo made it easier to find these videos than by performing a general search on the Web.</p>
<p>I submitted a non-how-to video to this site by simply entering a URL, without logging in. I never found the video I submitted on the site; WonderHowTo explained that it screens all videos prior to posting them, so it must have found my video.</p>
<p>EHow.com uses its database of articles to encourage people to watch videos, when they&#8217;re relevant. This site uses calm, pastel colors to give a relaxed feeling &#8212; especially compared with WonderHowTo, where banner ads surround the page. EHow&#8217;s 26 categories include Parenting, Parties &amp; Entertaining and Weddings. Twelve subcategories within Weddings led to 23 articles about Bridal Party Responsibilities &#8212; a popular topic was &#8220;How To Deal With a Bridezilla.&#8221; Related videos, such as &#8220;How To Get Rid of Wedding Day Jitters,&#8221; ran along the right of the page.</p>
<p>Videos can also be found on eHow within a marked tab at the top of the page. But unlike the articles on eHow, these videos weren&#8217;t well organized or as easily searchable. I watched one of eHow&#8217;s Featured Videos called &#8220;How to Know if Your Toe Is Broken,&#8221; but after closing a pop-up ad for UPS (UPS) during Step One of the video, another ad popped up during Step Five. Neither ad had anything to do with broken toes.</p>
<p>But the eHow videos were professional-looking and included quite a few tips that I didn&#8217;t know. That broken toe video was submitted by the eHow Health Editor, and a link at the top of the page led me to hundreds of other health-related articles. I found another video on &#8220;How To Remove Wallpaper,&#8221; which was posted by the Home &amp; Garden Editor and included a list of things I would need to proceed, along with numbered steps.</p>
<p>It isn&#8217;t always easy to learn from the information you find online, and how-to videos can be a big help &#8212; especially when they&#8217;re well-made and easy to find using one of these sites. Howcast.com has well-presented content that was enjoyable to watch, but WonderHowTo.com offers a better variety of instructional videos.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Search, by nature, doesn&#8217;t need to be overly exciting stuff. It usually involves typing a word in a box, pressing enter and reading results to find the best one &#8212; and this style works well for plenty of people, as is evidenced by Google&#8217;s success. But many would like to see search become smarter, more intuitive or even visually stimulating.</p>

<p>This week, I tested two applications that turn searching into feasts for the eyes. Instead of showing search results in lines of text, these results are visually based. One, called SpaceTime, displays search results in three-dimensional views that make images look as if they are flying onto the screen. The other, an actual search engine called Searchme, spreads image results out in fan-like patterns. Both SpaceTime and Searchme encourage people to search by choosing what looks visually familiar or accurate, rather than trying to discern what the text in a link might mean.</p>
<p>The idea of improved search isn&#8217;t a new one. Many have tried, ranging from Ask.com&#8217;s media-rich result pages to Mahalo.com&#8217;s human-powered search engine. But Google&#8217;s (GOOG) simplicity and experience have made it hard to beat, and competitors know the importance of relevant and reliable results. Rather than comparing these sites with the big G, I looked at them as add-ons that could be especially useful for certain searches.</p>
<p>Searchme, a search engine built from the ground up, is technically in private beta &#8212; meaning that it is still a work in progress and users must be invited to use it. The company gave me access to the site and created a link so that readers of this column could also use it: <a href="http://www.searchme.com/wsj" rel="external">www.searchme.com/wsj</a>. This Web-based tool works on Windows and Mac operating systems and in any major browser, and it tries to improve search by asking users to choose a category for their search terms.</p>
<p>For instance, when I typed &#8220;US Open&#8221; in the Searchme box, categories appeared to the right, including Tennis, Squash, Gambling &amp; Casinos and Golf. Since I was looking for the tennis-related grand slam, I chose the Tennis category and saved myself some typing. The more I used Searchme, the more I came to rely on these categories for faster, more-refined results.</p>

<p>Searchme&#8217;s visual search works by displaying snapshots of Web sites, each of which has the search term highlighted on its page. These pages fan out from the center to look like Cover Flow in <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=AAPL'>Apple</a> Inc.&#8217;s (AAPL) iTunes, visually sorting images like album covers in a jukebox so they can be flipped through until the best Web page is found.</p>
<p>By moving a cursor along a horizontal scroll bar below these pages, I skimmed through 10 to 15 Web sites in a matter of seconds, quickly weeding out unwanted sites. But these pages don&#8217;t allow interaction like scrolling down or playing of embedded videos. A button below these images reveals a list-view where text and links relating to the images are listed, but I kept this option hidden more often than not.</p>
<p>Though Searchme&#8217;s categories are helpful and I liked using visual searching, I did notice many more results, overall, while performing searches through Google and Yahoo (YHOO). A Google search for the Regency Hotel in New York City returned accurate links to the hotel&#8217;s Web site &#8212; and a map. Searchme&#8217;s first result was a defunct Web page for the Regency, and the younger search engine doesn&#8217;t yet have maps, news or stock quotes like Google.</p>
<p>Settings can be adjusted for Searchme, including one option to filter out adult content and another to open up new windows whenever a Web page is selected, so as not to lose the current page.</p>
<p>SpaceTime (<a href="http://www.spacetime.com" rel="external">www.spacetime.com</a>) differs from Searchme in that it doesn&#8217;t try to be its own search engine. Instead, it is a browser that works with established search engines and Web sites. It isn&#8217;t Web-based, like Searchme, and must be downloaded to a Windows (MSFT) PC (it doesn&#8217;t yet work on Macs). The intense 3-D graphics of this program work best on a computer with at least one gigabyte of system memory and 256 megabytes of dedicated video memory.</p>
<p>At first glance, SpaceTime appears to be a normal browser. It has the usual URL line where specific Web sites can be entered and a search box at the top right that can be set to search Google, Google Images, Yahoo, Yahoo Images, eBay (EBAY), Flickr, YouTube, RSS feeds or Amazon (AMZN).</p>
<p>But using this search box starts the fun of the product. Search results appear as images lined up on the screen, floating through space and descending into the distance in a 3-D visualization akin to that of Windows Vista&#8217;s Flip 3D. SpaceTime&#8217;s dark background gives it a dramatic edge, and each object is reflected in an artistic, glass-like surface. Results can be tweaked, turned, magnified and moved within this 3-D space.</p>
<p>When I performed normal Google or Yahoo searches, the returned results appeared as images of each Web site on which the searched term appeared. When I searched for images on Google, Yahoo or Flickr, the results came back in image-only fashion &#8212; not images embedded in Web sites &#8212; that looked stunning lined up in 3-D. Searches of eBay are especially useful on SpaceTime because each item up for bid zooms onto the screen as its own object along with its current price, number of bids and remaining auction time. YouTube searches return videos lined up in SpaceTime&#8217;s 3-D environment.</p>
<p>With all of these images flying in and out of the screen, things can get a little overwhelming. One pile of search results is called a stack, and each stack is automatically saved in a dock at the bottom of the screen, labeled with a thumbnail image of where you last left off. Searches can be saved and snapshots of screens can be captured and saved in the dock.</p>
<p>To return results as fast as possible, SearchTime says it will pull up just 10 at a time for image, product and video searches, or five pages at once for content-heavy sites. But in my tests, using two different Vista computers with 2GB of RAM each, I usually never saw more than five results at a time. The next five or 10 images can be retrieved by choosing a &#8220;Next Set&#8221; button at the bottom of the screen.</p>
<p>On-screen Web sites and objects are interactive, meaning that I could scroll down within a Web page or play a YouTube video within the SpaceTime screen. A clever magnifying glass pops up on the screen to pinpoint the original search term on each page.</p>
<p>SpaceTime allowed me to rapidly flip through tens or even hundreds of images and Web sites in a very short time, but it wasn&#8217;t perfect. Some search results took a while to load, only displaying the first object while the other lined-up objects appeared as empty frames because they were still loading. YouTube seemed sluggish and wasn&#8217;t as easy to navigate as some other searches, and Flickr was especially slow to load in a few of my tests.</p>
<p>SpaceTime is working on a Web-based version that won&#8217;t rely so heavily on each user&#8217;s PC specs, and Searchme is still in its testing phase, working to return more relevant results. But for now, these two sites turn search into a different, much more visually stimulating experience. After using these programs for a little while, I started to search differently &#8212; moving through results faster and clicking on fewer links that returned unwanted results. Though I&#8217;ll still rely on Google for basic searches, visual search can save time and turn searching into a fun process.</p>

Its bubble-popping sound effects and grinning, animated mascot help users forget how much it costs to use. (TiVo boxes range from $100 to $600, and TiVo service costs $129 for one year when prepaid.)</p>

<p>A fondness for TiVo has encouraged users to refer to it with designated nicknames and/or genders. A teacher friend of mine was recently asked by a student if her husband&#8217;s name was TiVo after the child heard her say she would have to tell TiVo about a new TV show. But like any old friend &#8212; or spouse &#8212; who has been around for a while, TiVo has a few tricks up its sleeve that might surprise longtime users and new owners alike. This column includes just a handful of those tricks and highlights some features that may make TiVo more useful. These tips are for everyday users, not serious hackers, and many others exist.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Remote-Control Codes</h5>
<p>Each of these codes is entered one time to enable an otherwise-hidden function, and three chimes signal the code is set. These functions can be disabled by entering the code a second time, or if TiVo is rebooted.</p>
<p>Clock: If you miss having a VCR nearby to tell you the time while you watch TV, TiVo can help. A digital clock can be programmed to show up in the lower right-hand corner of your television screen by pressing &#8220;SELECT-PLAY-SELECT-9-SELECT.&#8221;</p>
<p>While playing recorded shows, this clock displays the current time and the elapsed time of the program you&#8217;re watching. Personally, I check a show&#8217;s progress by pressing the remote&#8217;s Play button to see the progress bar, and the Info button shows the current time. But the on-screen clock might come in handy when you&#8217;re watching TV on a terrible date and you don&#8217;t want to get caught glancing at your watch.</p>
<p>30-second skip: One of the glorious functions of TiVo and other DVRs is their ability to fast-forward through commercials. But it takes practice to know when to press Play so as to completely miss commercials.</p>
<p>If you&#8217;re unsure about your fast-forwarding technique, TiVo can be permanently set to skip ahead in 30-second increments, by entering &#8220;SELECT-PLAY-SELECT-3-0-SELECT.&#8221; This code must be set while watching a recorded show. After that, the 30-second skipping works whenever you press the &#8220;Skip To Tick&#8221; button, which looks like an arrow pointing right to a straight line.</p>
<p>TiVo says this code won&#8217;t work for longer time increments, like 90 seconds, and I tried using various increments, to no avail. Still, pressing this button about five or seven times in a row (depending on the show) gets you through commercials with less guesswork.</p>
<p>Disappearing progress bar: TiVo&#8217;s progress bar, which shows how far along a program has progressed in terms of the entire show&#8217;s duration, appears at various moments, such as when you first play a recorded show or unpause. This indicator lingers on the screen for just about three seconds, but if this seems too long, you can enter &#8220;SELECT-PLAY-SELECT-PAUSE-SELECT&#8221; to set the progress bar to disappear after less than a second.</p>
<p>I tried this setting on my TiVo, but one second showed only a quick blink of the progress bar, not enough time to see anything.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Number Shortcuts</h5>
<p>From the TiVo Central menu, pressing each number on the remote control&#8217;s numeric keypad skips directly to a different tool. Some of the more useful shortcuts include pressing &#8220;1&#8243; to go to Season Pass Manager (a list of programs that are set to automatically record every episode), &#8220;4&#8243; to go to Search Title and &#8220;8&#8243; to go to TiVo Suggestions.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Viewing Tips</h5>
<p>TiVo can display a programming guide in a TV-Guide-like grid, or as a two-columned TiVo Live Guide that can list future shows for hours or days out. The top of Live Guide gives a detailed description of each selected program, along with its duration and TV rating.</p>
<p>The Now Playing list shows content stored on a TiVo. By default, this list is organized in time sequential order with same-series TV shows grouped into folders. Remote-control shortcuts re-sort this list: pressing &#8220;1&#8243; switches from sequential to alphabetical order and vice versa; pressing &#8220;2&#8243; ungroups shows to display each title; shows are regrouped into folders when &#8220;2&#8243; is pressed again.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Lesser-Known Features</h5>
<p>Universal Swivel Search is a way of seeing how TiVo&#8217;s various shows and movies are related to one another. It lists details about each program, including actors, directors, tags associated with a show (like love, dating and addiction) and suggestions of similar content. Swivel Search is accessed through the Find Programs menu or More Options while looking at a recorded show.</p>
<p>By selecting a Swivel Search detail about a particular show, such as one of its actors, you can see what else he or she starred in and whether or not that show or movie is available through TiVo or <a href="http://Amazon.com" rel="external">Amazon.com</a>&#8217;s Unbox. Unbox downloads movies directly to your TiVo ranging from $2 to $15 each depending on whether you rent or buy a movie.</p>
<p>Plenty of free Internet content can be downloaded from the Web to your TiVo. But TiVo confusingly places this content in two menus: Find Programs and Music, Photos, Products &amp; More. Under Find Programs, a Download TV &amp; Movies section offers Amazon Unbox movies and free TiVoCast content. The latter can be set to automatically download with Season Pass settings, such as The Onion&#8217;s weekly video or ExerciseTV&#8217;s twice weekly videos.</p>
<p>The Music, Photos, Products &amp; More menu holds content like photos and unprotected MP3s from a nearby computer, podcasts, Rhapsody music, Yahoo! Weather and Traffic and on-screen games. You can even buy movie tickets through Fandango.</p>
<p>TiVo takes up valuable space in a home entertainment center, so it&#8217;s important for the company to make sure its content is varied and useful. The codes and shortcuts mentioned can change the way you use this valuable device every day.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>This week at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the majority of attendees are doing their darndest to speak the geek language. &#8220;Geek,&#8221; though just a letter away from &#8220;Greek,&#8221; can be just as confusing to those who aren&#8217;t fluent speakers. Below, find a guide to terms and definitions used in some key technology categories. It will help you speak geek with the best of them, whether at CES or browsing products in your neighborhood electronics store.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Digital Cameras</h5>
<p><strong>Megapixels:</strong> This term describes the highest resolution photo a camera can take. Often mistaken as the most important factor in a digital camera, a high megapixel count &#8212; such as 10MP or more &#8212; isn&#8217;t necessary for the average user unless he or she plans on heavily editing or enlarging photos. Most new digicams offer between five and eight megapixels, which is usually more than enough.</p>
<p><strong>Optical or Digital Zoom:</strong> Optical zoom, determined by the physical movement of a lens, matters much more than digital zoom, which digitally alters an image using the camera&#8217;s internal computer. Camera companies still try to confuse potential buyers by listing a camera&#8217;s total zoom, or the optical and digital zooms multiplied together. Ignore total zoom numbers and instead focus on optical, which now averages around 5x for many new cameras.</p>
<p><strong>Image Stabilization:</strong> When generously sized LCD viewing screens started replacing optical viewfinders, they also forced users to hold their cameras at arm&#8217;s length, making for plenty of blurry photographs. To remedy this, camera manufacturers have added image stabilization, tools once found only in high-end SLR models. Optical (also called &#8220;mechanical&#8221;) and digital image stabilization correct for unsteady hands and moving subjects, respectively. Cameras with both types advertise dual image stabilization, which corrects for both situations and costs more.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Mobile Devices</h5>
<p><strong>HSDPA and EVDO:</strong> HSDPA, or High Speed Downlink Packet Access, is the name for <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=t'>AT&#038;T</a>&#8217;s 3G, or third generation, mobile network that operates at roughly the speed of a slower DSL in a home. HSDPA is available in most major metropolitan areas and is seen as the competitor to <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=vz'>Verizon</a> and Sprint&#8217;s EVDO (Evolution Data Only) networks, though the popular iPhone runs on AT&#038;T&#8217;s network using Wi-Fi and EDGE technology rather than HSDPA.</p>
<p><strong>Multi-Touch Technology:</strong> Most popularly found on Apple&#8217;s iPhone and iPod touch, multi-touch is starting to show up in other products, such as in <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=msft'>Microsoft</a>&#8217;s Surface, a coffee-table-like computer. Rather than just responding to on-screen touches, this technology enables moving, resizing and zooming pictures and Web pages using one or more fingers simultaneously. Look for many more devices &#8212; mobile and otherwise &#8212; to incorporate multi-touch in the future.</p>
<p><strong>GPS:</strong> Global Positioning Systems are most often found in cars &#8212; either built-in or on portable devices from companies like <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=GRMN'>Garmin</a> and TomTom. These gadgets use satellite technology to determine geographic location, and high-end models even display Web content like news and weather along with directions. GPS integration in mobile devices can be used to plot routes in cars, can help users find nearby businesses while on the go and can link friends by showing one where the other is located and what they&#8217;re doing.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Digital Music</h5>
<p><strong>DRM:</strong> Digital rights management is a set of standards that protect the intellectual property rights of online content like music and videos, preventing it from being illegally distributed across the Web. In the past year, <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=12777.fr'>Vivendi</a>&#8217;s Universal Music Group, Apple and (most recently) <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=sne'>Sony</a> BMG said they will start selling DRM-free versions of songs, often for a higher price. In Apple&#8217;s iTunes store, these files are called &#8220;iTunes Plus&#8221; and aren&#8217;t restricted like other iTunes content.</p>
<p><strong>MP3:</strong> MP3 files are open, without any DRM restrictions. Files that you rip (copy) from your own CDs are usually converted into MP3s, though iTunes users can automatically rip tracks into that program&#8217;s special format, called AAC. MP3 files can be uploaded to social-networking sites for sharing with friends and online communities.</p>
<p class="answer"> These file types are protected by rights that tie them to specific players. Generally, AAC files make up the majority of tracks sold on Apple&#8217;s iTunes store and play only on Apple&#8217;s iPods; WMA files are Microsoft&#8217;s version of proprietary files.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Wi-Fi</h5>
<p>The popularity of Wireless Fidelity, or Wi-Fi, brings this technology to more and more portable devices like the iPod Touch and Microsoft Zune and gives companies good reason to incorporate Wi-Fi receivers in new computers &#8212; laptops and desktops alike. While available in many flavors, different letters like b, g, a and n stand behind Wi-Fi&#8217;s more technical name, 802.11, to help discern one version from another according to characteristics like speed and compatibility. The latest version, &#8220;n,&#8221; offers the greatest range and speed, and &#8220;n&#8221; devices are usually compatible with earlier versions.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Televisions</h5>
<p><strong>HDTV:</strong> High-definition television has now become the standard, capable of displaying vastly better pictures, provided the source is also HD. Today&#8217;s more popular flat panel HD televisions are LCDs, or liquid crystal displays, though plasmas still hold their own. Recording HD content can&#8217;t be done with a regular digital video recorder; instead, a special HD recorder is required to capture this higher quality content.</p>
<p><strong>480p vs. 1080i vs. 720p vs. 1080p:</strong> These numbers refer to the resolution, or sharpness, of a digital display, while &#8220;p&#8221; stands for progressive and &#8220;i&#8221; stands for interlaced. A resolution of 480p, known as EDTV or Enhanced Definition TV, is found most often in low-end plasmas or LCD screens. A TV with a resolution of 1080p is currently considered the Holy Grail, and costs the most. But 1080p pictures usually can&#8217;t be distinguished from less expensive 1080i or 720p pictures by average viewers at the typical distances from which most folks watch TV.</p>
<p><strong>Blu-ray vs. HD DVD:</strong> Blu-ray and HD DVD are incompatible high-definition disc formats that continue to fight a seemingly endless battle to replace the DVD. The Blu-ray camp is led by <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=sne'>Sony</a> and the HD DVD camp is led by Toshiba. The two formats aren&#8217;t so different, technically speaking, but their very existence is confusing to consumers. The recent decision made by<a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=twx'> Time Warner</a>&#8217;s Warner Bros. to use Blu-ray gives Sony&#8217;s side a boost, and now <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=via'>Viacom</a>&#8217;s Paramount is rumored to be switching to Blu-ray from HD DVD. Dual-format players from Samsung and LG offer some solace.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>When you hear a catchy new song, it&#8217;s hard not to tell your friends about it. The opposite is also true: it&#8217;s nearly impossible to discuss a song when you haven&#8217;t heard it first. Yet there are plenty of blogs and Web sites where music is discussed under the assumption that other bloggers know how a song, album or artist sounds.</p>
<p>This week, I dived into the music blogging world of <a href="http://MOG.com" rel="external">MOG.com</a>, a Web site where enthusiasts can read, blog and network with one another. Starting today, this site will integrate with Rhapsody, the subscription-based music service, so that MOG users, or MOGGERS, can simultaneously blog about and listen to millions of songs that fuel their online discussions.</p>

<p>MOG Inc. prides itself on working as a destination for people who hope to discuss music tastes and opinions, like TripAdvisor.com works for travelers. MOG&#8217;s first public beta, or test version, came out about a year and a half ago.</p>
<p>Its use of a subscription model comes at a time when CD profits are lagging and larger social-networking sites are negotiating with record labels to incorporate music streaming. Plenty of people still prefer purchasing music a la Apple Inc.&#8217;s iTunes Store, where there aren&#8217;t restrictions due to streaming or subscriptions.</p>
<p>Along with built-in Rhapsody, this newly enhanced version of MOG includes other improvements, such as a better search engine and a speedy tool that generates personal profiles for each MOG user according to his or her musical tastes.</p>
<p>I was granted early access to MOG&#8217;s revamped site and was most impressed by its fast search tool, which works just like the Spotlight search in Apple&#8217;s operating system. Results are narrowed with each typed letter and returned in neatly divided categories. Best of all, music results came back as fast as if they were on my hard drive instead of various MOG pages and Rhapsody&#8217;s database.</p>
<p>MOG also does a good job of marrying its contents with Rhapsody in a way that isn&#8217;t overly obvious; tiny Play icons beside song titles can be selected to start hearing a tune through the Rhapsody player, which hums along in the background, and similar icons add songs to playlists in one step.</p>
<p>But for a site that prides itself on appealing to music enthusiasts, I found certain genres much more represented than others. The rock music category, for example, had plenty of related posts and coinciding Rhapsody music, but the classical music section was almost nonexistent and country tunes were poorly represented. I typed &#8220;Bach&#8221; into the search box, expecting to be flooded with results, but saw no music and only one post by a MOG user about why she thought Bach was a great composer. The company says it will fix this in the next couple of months.</p>
<p>Unlimited Rhapsody access costs $13 monthly and is offered free for the first 14 days. But, like all subscription models, it blocks access to music if you don&#8217;t pay this monthly fee. MOGGERS who don&#8217;t want to pay or don&#8217;t plan on using Rhapsody as much can choose from two free options: one that allows users to listen to 25 songs a month and another that only allows free 30-second clips of song.</p>
<p>MOGGERS can upload their own MP3s within blog posts on the site. But linking to Rhapsody songs was easier and faster.</p>
<p>I got started by clicking a giant &#8220;Magic Button&#8221; icon on the MOG site. This installed MOG-O-MATIC, a tool that automatically searched my computer&#8217;s hard drive for all of my music files, then indexed them and created a profile of my music taste on a personalized My MOG page. This tool was also available in the first version of MOG but is 10 times as fast now, indexing 10,000 songs an hour compared with 1,000 songs previously.</p>
<p>I liked that MOG-O-MATIC did some page-creation work for me, making a list of the songs I listened to most recently &#8212; regardless of what program I used to listen to the song (iTunes, Windows Media Player or Rhapsody). Another list that was automatically generated from my music showed which artist was best represented in my collection. If you don&#8217;t want the world to know about your Barry Manilow obsession, this list can be altered to fudge the truth.</p>
<p>Because MOG-O-MATIC scans your entire music collection, it knows what music you like. A Recommendations page shows you what other MOGGERS with similar tastes are listening to, helping you discover new tunes. I found these suggestions to be pretty accurate, and even discovered a great song on another MOGGER&#8217;s recommended playlist called &#8220;Summer Teeth&#8221; by Wilco. I checked out the page belonging to the MOGGER who created this playlist, and found other tunes that were in line with my musical taste.</p>
<p>Using Rhapsody, I played entire Web pages of recommended songs with one click. Likewise, entire music collections belonging to other people can be played the same way, as long as you have the right Rhapsody account to play that many songs.</p>
<p>I wrote a blog post on MOG about the newest album from &#8220;Fountains of Wayne,&#8221; and it automatically included a Play button icon, enabling the song I wrote about to play along with my post. This auto-linking is done with fill-in-the-blank boxes that tag each post with music.</p>
<p>MOG isn&#8217;t trying to be a social-networking site that enables all things. Instead, it focuses on one thing, music, and successfully improves the way people discuss, share and discover music online.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Electronic greetings, or e-cards, have come a long way since their debut as one-dimensional postcards and now can include animation, slideshows and personal narration.</p>
<p>These digital creations save forgetful friends who don&#8217;t think far enough in advance to buy and send snail-mail cards. However, even the hippest e-cards, such as customizable cartoons from political parody site JibJab.com, are no match for paper cards with thoughtfully penned sentiments.</p>

<p>Rather than fight the ever-popular, old-school cards, the digital world is trying to improve the way people buy and send those cards. This week I tested a Web site called <a href="http://www.jackcards.com" rel="external">www.jackcards.com</a>, which sends email reminders a month before important dates and offers to ship paper cards one, two, or four weeks before an event. The cards can arrive pre-stamped and pre-addressed, so you need only add your own hand-written message before dropping them in the mail.</p>
<p>Jack Cards LLC of Boston based its business after the notion that an imaginary correspondence butler named &#8220;Jack&#8221; could take care of you, making you look like the friend/spouse/relative/boss of the year. Its cards range from $1.50 to $6 each, plus the cost of a stamp if you opt to get the card pre-stamped; U.S. shipping is free throughout December.</p>
<p>My primary skepticism about Jack Cards was its content: Did it offer enough variety to justify buying cards without seeing them? Would its cards be funny enough to send my uncle into a fit of laughter? And would they be like the tear-jerkers best friends see in stores and buy for one another for no reason?</p>
<p>Jack Cards prides itself on unique offerings that can&#8217;t be found in the local drugstore, and I found that its cards fit the bill for many occasions. It&#8217;s worth noting the cards looked even better in person, created by about 40 designers who left me both scratching my head over some of their humor and cooing over their beautiful designs. But the functionality of the site needs to improve, especially in the way it helps users search through cards; too often, results were hit and miss. And it doesn&#8217;t incorporate enough rich Web 2.0 features, which could improve navigation on the site and be a real boon for looking at cards (imagine an inset animation of a card opening and revealing its message inside).</p>

<p>Predictably, Hallmark Cards Inc. isn&#8217;t sitting idly by as a start-up tries to steals its thunder. Its Web site, <a href="http://Hallmark.com" rel="external">Hallmark.com</a>, sells paper cards in addition to e-cards and it, too, can remind you of coming events. Its way of personalizing cards is to send them directly to recipients with a message typed inside &#8212; a method that isn&#8217;t as personal. Like Jack Cards, Hallmark offers to mail cards to buyers to send out but doesn&#8217;t pre-stamp or pre-address anything.</p>
<p>Hallmark also differs from Jack Cards in the shipping department. A $2.99 birthday card from Hallmark.com cost $2.95 to be shipped to me &#8212; and wouldn&#8217;t arrive at my door for five business days. The free shipping offer from Jack Cards will end in January, but the company normally charges 99 cents for two- to three-day shipping; this flat fee applies to a package filled with any number of cards.</p>
<p>Without signing in, anyone can browse through the more than 1,000 cards on JackCards.com. Those interested in joining the site can do so for free after entering a name, password, email and birthday. Members are asked to enter a list of the &#8220;Fast Five&#8221; &#8212; people with whom they most often correspond, such as parents, siblings, best friends or close colleagues.</p>
<p>Each of the Fast Five is set up with a name, address and list of events that correspond to the person; I listed my parents with their anniversary, Mother&#8217;s Day or Father&#8217;s Day, birthdays and Christmas. I was a little stunned to find an event titled &#8220;Will You Marry Me?&#8221; but I suppose Jack Cards thought of everything.</p>
<p>The site could stand to be better organized. The page filled with data on each of my Fast Five seemed jumbled, and jumping from one contact to another wasn&#8217;t as easy as it should be. Hyperlinks beside the events I entered for these people directed me to a general browsing page for cards instead of to a page specifically related to an event. These extra steps gave the page a clumsy feel.</p>

<p>Drop-down search toolbars let you choose the occasion, style of card (Humor, Just For Kids, Romantic etc.), recipient and designer. Each card&#8217;s front and inside messages, size and paper color are identified as you move your cursor over them.</p>
<p>I was stunned by some of the Mother-specific birthday cards. None of the cards said &#8220;Happy Birthday, Mom,&#8221; which was a problem because without that, the cards all seemed ambiguous. A card in this search said, &#8220;You are going to cherish this birthday card years from now. Cuz who knows if I&#8217;ll remember your birthday again. Happy Birthday.&#8221; I can&#8217;t think of anyone who would give such a card to a mother. The company continues to improve its searching to be more accurate.</p>
<p>But Jack Cards did introduce me to some clever and original material that I never would&#8217;ve seen in my CVS. Beautifully colorful cards made by Masha D&#8217;yans caught my eye immediately and looked more like watercolor paintings than cards.</p>
<p>I bought a good variety of about 25 cards and had them sent to me, some stamped and pre-labeled with my return address and the recipient&#8217;s address typed in attractive script, others without any stamp or label. Square cards cost more to mail (58 cents compared with 41 cents), but Jack Cards will give you the appropriate stamp. The weight and quality of the cards, along with their artistic attributes, made them feel more special than something that has been picked up from a shelf and opened by a hundred passersby. Many cards were individually packaged in plastic wrappers to stay clean en route.</p>
<p>If Jack Cards can continue to work on its site&#8217;s navigation and search functions, I think its system would be welcomed by many people looking for good-quality, well-designed cards that catch the eye. It saves users the hassle of last-minute trips to the card store, and still lets greeting cards keep their personal touch, which is what makes them such a permanent fixture in our lives.</p>
