			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>If your company makes printers but general trends are leaning toward using less paper and moving digital content to e-readers and smartphones, what can you do? Hewlett-Packard&#8217;s solution is to find new ways to get people to print more.</p>
<p>The $399 H-P Photosmart Premium All-in-One with Touch-Smart Web (<a href="http://hp.com/go/touchprinting">hp.com/go/touchprinting</a>) will print, copy, fax and scan like other all-in-ones. But it connects to the Internet using built-in Wi-Fi and displays customized Web applications on its 4.33-inch touch screen. These apps are designed to promote printing in any way possible, including photos from Snapfish, Sudoku puzzles, movie tickets from Fandango, coupons, maps from Google (GOOG) Maps, coloring-book pages and news articles—all without using a computer.</p>

<p>The print apps are part of the new H-P App Studio, H-P&#8217;s (HPQ) answer to the flurry of app stores—Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) App Store, RIM&#8217;s (RIMM) BlackBerry World, Android Marketplace, Palm&#8217;s (PALM) App Catalog and Microsoft&#8217;s (MSFT) Zune Marketplace—that ease the process of downloading onto mobile devices. A &#8220;Get More&#8221; icon on the printer&#8217;s touch screen presents descriptions of available apps. There are currently 15 available for download onto your printer, and more will be added in coming months.</p>

<p>This printer is designed to work with more than just the H-P App Studio. A downloadable tool called the H-P Photo Print Gadget installs on computers running Windows 7 or Vista (not Windows XP) so people can drag and drop photos to it for printing. PlayStation 3 owners can capture and print screen shots as evidence of their game success. And a long-available free app in Apple&#8217;s App Store called H-P iPrint Photo lets iPhone and iPod Touch owners send photos to this and other H-P printers.</p>
<p>The goal of this product is obviously to get people to print more, and in my case, it worked. I used more paper in a week of testing the Photosmart Premium All-in-One than I normally print out in three weeks at my office. The printer quickly churned out dual-sided pages with photos in rich colors.</p>
<p>But the concept of adding apps to a printer while also asking people to become more paper-reliant seems like one step forward, two steps back. I could see this concept working on a thin, stylish printer that could fit neatly on an entryway table, making it a cinch for people to grab maps, movie tickets and coupons on their way out the door. But this is a large, all-in-one machine that takes up some serious space.</p>
<p>And if this all-in-one is truly meant to work without a PC, it should do a better job of letting you interact with pages, like zooming in on a document to preview before printing. In the current document preview screen, the text is too small to read. Likewise, the Google Calendar app printed a nice one-page calendar month view, but I couldn&#8217;t zoom in on the print preview to see specific appointments. This forced me to print the page to see its contents, using more ink and more paper.</p>
<p>Other apps are shamelessly begging users to press Print. A Toys and Crafts app made by H-P itself includes paper dolls with cut-out clothes that can be snipped and folded to stay on the doll&#8217;s form. For the doll&#8217;s face, kids are encouraged to use a photo of themselves that–surprise, surprise—they can print using their all-in-one.</p>
<p><a href="HTTP://Coupons.com">Coupons.com</a> supplies two apps—one for coupons and one for recipes. I browsed through 87 product coupons in my ZIP Code and marked those that I wanted to print using a small check-box on the touch screen. Pressing &#8220;Print&#8221; compiled three coupons on one piece of paper. Recipes from Coupons.com printed with brightly colored photos of the end result; I&#8217;m looking forward to following one for Curried Chicken Salad.</p>
<p>For now, the Google Maps app isn&#8217;t ready for prime time: It prints only maps, not directions. H-P says it&#8217;s planning to add directions but wouldn&#8217;t say when. And a Nickelodeon app couldn&#8217;t load on my printer. Some apps took from 10 to 30 seconds to load—precious time when you&#8217;re running out the door.</p>
<p>One of the smartest apps, Tabbloid, lets people assemble a personalized tabloid-style print-out of news from a variety of sources like Daily Kos for politics and FanHouse for sports. But this assembling must be done on a computer, thus negating this printer&#8217;s no-PC approach. I chose from a list of 10 topics including automotive, celebrity, politics and sports and created a printable Tabbloid that, with one click, was sent wirelessly to the corresponding app on my printer. I printed it out to read during my commute. </p>
<p>I liked using the Photosmart Premium All-in-One&#8217;s generous screen for touch gestures like flicking left-to-right through a carousel of icons that represent apps. An on-screen keyboard appeared when I had to type in passwords for things like my Snapfish account.</p>
<p>H-P says it will introduce other products with TouchSmart Web capability and access to the HP App Studio, and one hopes these products will include low-end printers rather than expensive all-in-ones. The apps on the H-P Photosmart Premium All-in-One with TouchSmart Web are user-friendly, but I&#8217;m not convinced they&#8217;ll incite people to print more things more often.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>At long last, Microsoft has made a portable media player that you can be proud to carry around: the Zune HD.</p>
<p>This fourth-generation Zune (<a href="http://Zune.net">Zune.net</a>) is ultra thin and has a stunningly vivid 3.3-inch touch screen that covers most of its surface, doing away with the old device&#8217;s touchpad. It comes in one small size rather than the older large and small versions, and has capacities of 16 and 32 gigabytes for $220 and $290, respectively. </p>

<p>The Zune HD does a nice job of integrating and artistically displaying content about an artist, song or album whenever possible. It has an acceptable built-in browser that surfs the Web using a Wi-Fi connection, and a customizable Quickplay menu on the home screen that displays your content using tiny, stylish tiles. The corresponding Zune Marketplace finally offers movies—about 500 for renting or buying, half of which have HD resolution. And a $90 docking station works with the device to display its HD content on your HDTV.</p>
<p>Given all the improvements of this new Zune, it&#8217;s a shame that this makeover stopped short of revamping its commerce system, which is still too confusing. Rather than inviting newcomers to the Zune and its online store by allowing them to use real money to buy content, it is still tied to the points system made popular by Microsoft&#8217;s (MSFT) Xbox gaming console. In this gamer-friendly system, the cost of one song is 79 points, roughly the equivalent of a dollar, and users must buy points in buckets ranging from 400 for $5 to 5,000 for $62.50. People who are trying to watch their budgets don&#8217;t need the hassle of calculating points per purchase. And Amazon&#8217;s (AMZN) Kindle e-reader and Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) iTunes Store have proved that using dollars and an uncomplicated one-click system is a successful strategy.</p>
<p>The way I prefer to get the most out of the Zune system is by using the Zune Pass for $15 monthly. This charge allows free continuous streaming of music from any computer&#8217;s browser as long as you log in, and includes 10 free MP3 downloads a month that are yours to keep even if you bail on using the Zune software. The Zune Pass lets you listen to Smart DJ playlists that can be built in one of three ways: using your own library; using a mix of Marketplace content and music from your library; or using only songs from the Marketplace. These also can be set to last for a certain amount of time—say for a 30-minute jog or a two-hour party.</p>
<p>I created several Smart DJ playlists including one using Dierks Bentley as the seed artist from which other suggestions were generated. This country singer was a good test for the Zune software because Mr. Bentley&#8217;s music blends new and old country sounds. I set the Smart DJ to produce a mix using only content from Marketplace and it returned a great list that included songs from newer group, Little Big Town, as well as older stuff like Joe Diffie&#8217;s &#8220;John Deere Green.&#8221; Any Smart DJ list can be dragged onto the Zune HD.             </p>
<p>Apple&#8217;s iPod Touch is the Zune HD&#8217;s biggest rival and its iTunes Store has much more content in all categories compared with Zune Marketplace. But let&#8217;s put music, movies, TV shows, podcasts and music videos aside and say we&#8217;re satisfied with the amount of content offered by Zune Marketplace. </p>
<p>One of the iPod Touch&#8217;s best features is its ability to access Apple&#8217;s App Store, a catalog of 75,000 applications. The Zune HD only dips its pinky toe into a pool where Apple is already swimming laps: Only nine apps can be downloaded from the Zune Marketplace (all are free). They&#8217;re colorful and simple to use, but nine apps won&#8217;t be enough to compete head on with the iPod Touch.</p>

<p>It would be a real boon to Zune if it somehow inherited the gaming genes of Microsoft&#8217;s already-established Xbox, especially considering how Apple has heavily marketed the iPod Touch as a portable gaming system. Microsoft will only say that later this year Zune will offer apps for Twitter and Facebook as well as 3-D games like &#8220;Project Gotham Racing: Ferrari Edition.&#8221; </p>
<p>The only same-capacity model in the Zune HD and iPod Touch is the 32-gigabyte, which costs $290 and $299, respectively. The Zune HD is smaller than the iPod Touch so its organic light-emitting-diode touch screen is 3.3 inches compared with the Touch&#8217;s 3.5-inch screen. The Zune fits easily in any pocket and is just 0.35-inch thick. A thin horizontal button on the face of the device takes you to the home screen, and a hidden button on the left side pulls up an on-screen menu for volume and playback controls—or just tap the screen when content is playing. It doesn&#8217;t have a speaker like the iPod Touch, so you&#8217;ll always need earbuds to hear anything that&#8217;s playing.</p>
<p>Quickplay is one of my favorite features on the Zune HD. It uses tiny tiles to visually represent your content in four categories: currently playing; anything pinned (or labeled with a shortcut tile) to Quickplay; a history of recently opened content; and anything that&#8217;s new to the player. This includes all of your photos, videos, music, Web pages and apps. I easily pinned <a href="http://AllThingsD.com">AllThingsD.com</a>, a &#8220;Saturday Night Live&#8221; video and a favorite photo to the Quickplay menu. Clever animation sends this menu to the background of the home screen or swiftly pulls it into the foreground when needed.</p>
<p>I rented and downloaded the movie &#8220;Girl with a Pearl Earring&#8221; and opted to pay 360 points for the HD version rather than paying 240 points for the standard-definition version. A helpful on-screen explanation described the advantages of each according to where it would be played. Movie rentals last for 14 days or 24 hours after you first press play. </p>
<p>Listening to music on the Zune HD is a lot of fun—and even educational. Whenever the screen goes idle while playing a song, large images of the artist and album cover fill the entire screen while text—album name, artist name, song name—scrolls across these images. With one touch, I saw a list of other albums and songs by that artist, an artist biography, related artists, and pictures of the artist. This is a lot more interesting than staring at one image on the screen, and I learned a lot of new information about musicians I&#8217;ve been listening to for years. </p>
<p>The newly added Web browser on the Zune HD gets the job done, but has downsides. Its on-screen keyboard for entering names of Web pages has very small keys and doesn&#8217;t use predictive typing to fix your mistakes. Some Web pages rendered normally on the browser, but a couple—like <a href="http://Georgetown.edu">Georgetown.edu</a>—looked normal only when I turned the Zune HD horizontally. </p>
<p>As with other Zunes, this Zune HD has a radio receiver and now uses HD radio for finding more stations with clearer signals. If you like a song, an on-screen button tags it for buying and downloading immediately or later.</p>
<p>The Zune HD is a great-looking little player, and users will especially appreciate its Quickplay menu, rich collection of artist information and mesmerizing screen. If its points system was scrapped and its Zune Marketplace was filled with more content, I&#8217;d like it better.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The old adage that the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence can be extended to our technology cravings. Even the person holding the shiniest new gadget can&#8217;t help but eye a neighbor who has a different device and wonder, &#8220;What does that do that mine doesn&#8217;t?&#8221;</p>
<p>Thoughts like these are especially prevalent when it comes to the devoted owners of BlackBerrys and iPhones. All too often, the people carrying these smart phones are curious about what one device has that the other lacks. This week, I&#8217;m going to save you the trouble and outline some of the personal usage ups and downs to each device. </p>

<p>Because I regularly use both gadgets and am accustomed to their different features, I have included fresh observations from five people who recently switched from BlackBerrys to iPhones. At my request, these people kept track of their impressions, noting the things they missed on their BlackBerrys along with things they preferred on the iPhones. This column isn&#8217;t meant to promote one device over the other; rather, it is a summary of some people&#8217;s sentiments, combined with my own observations in hopes of enlightening readers. I inevitably left out some differences.</p>
<p>The most outstanding observation from my switch group in favor of the iPhone was an appreciation for its applications, or apps. </p>
<p>They used things like driving directions for the first time because these apps looked and worked better on the iPhone than on the BlackBerry. And they went through a downloading frenzy during which time they found all sorts of apps for the iPhone, such as games, entertainment and those that enhanced business-travel productivity. &#8220;Browsing for games. Probably should leave the office now,&#8221; said one person&#8217;s notes. </p>
<p>Though Research in Motion&#8217;s (RIMM) BlackBerrys also run apps (including some of the same ones as for the iPhone), BlackBerry&#8217;s App World offers only a little better than 2,000 apps. Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) App Store boasts more than 65,000. A shortcut to the App Store ships preloaded on iPhones. BlackBerry App World is preloaded or virtually preloaded by carriers at their discretion, so a shortcut to App World may not be visible.</p>
<p>My switchers were frustrated by the iPhone&#8217;s battery life and complained of running low on battery. One person said, &#8220;I need to charge my iPhone a couple of times throughout the day which can be inconvenient, especially when traveling. With my BlackBerry I just charged it while I slept and it was good to go for the day.&#8221;</p>
<p>Granted, these people were all using the iPhone 3GS and had previously used various models of BlackBerrys that ran on slower networks and had smaller screens—two features that require less battery. Still, worrying about running out of juice is a hassle. One person said his iPhone&#8217;s weak battery was a tribute to the fact that he used it more often and for more things than he did the BlackBerry.</p>
<p>The most obvious difference between iPhones and BlackBerrys are the keyboards. The iPhone uses an on-screen keyboard, while the BlackBerry (except the touch-screen Storm model) uses a tactile QWERTY keyboard. As expected, the switchers had trouble using the iPhone keyboard&#8211;especially for the first few days. But after about a week, most people in the group had adjusted well to the on-screen keys and the iPhone&#8217;s auto-correct feature that fixes mistakes as long as you keep typing rather than stopping to fix an error. One person said, &#8220;I was a skeptic, and didn&#8217;t think the typing would work for me at all, but it actually hasn&#8217;t been too bad.&#8221; </p>
<p>Another said typing can be a real challenge at first, but that this could be overcome with a bit of practice.</p>
<p>Several people said they were still able to use their thumbs for iPhone typing as they did on the BlackBerry, though most preferred turning the screen horizontally to do this with slightly larger keys. Some said that they weren&#8217;t typing quite as fast as with the BlackBerry&#8217;s QWERTY keys but that they weren&#8217;t too far off. </p>
<p>The BlackBerry keyboard&#8217;s static position below its screen means all letters, numbers and symbols must come solely from pressing those keys; this is done by pressing ALT or Shift keys for numbers and symbols. Some switchers noted that pressing a button to change the iPhone&#8217;s on-screen keyboard from letters to capital letters or numbers took a bit longer than on the BlackBerry. </p>
<p>My switchers were ecstatic about using the iPhone&#8217;s Safari Web browser. They enthusiastically said searching, browsing and reading were all made much better and more visually pleasing compared with their experiences on the BlackBerry browser. </p>
<p>If you are a BlackBerry user, you know that all received and sent emails are listed on the same screen. The iPhone behaves more like a computer, storing sent emails in a special folder you must back up to open. This takes a little while to get used to.</p>
<p>Some switchers said they wished the iPhone had something like BlackBerry Messenger, the always-on messaging system that works to allow communication between all BlackBerrys. </p>
<p>The iPhone automatically changes its time when you enter a new time zone. BlackBerrys remain set to their home time zone for time stamping all emails with that time&#8211;unless you change the time in settings. </p>
<p>RIM prides itself on being able to run multiple applications at once; the iPhone allows this with its own preloaded programs like Mail and Safari, but not with other apps. </p>
<p>One switcher, for example, was frustrated that Pandora, a radio-like app that plays music according to user likes and dislikes, turned off when he opened Mail to read emails while listening to songs. </p>
<p>The BlackBerry&#8217;s AC adaptor takes up two power outlet spots, while the small, square iPhone plug occupies only one outlet, making it more versatile and able to charge in more locations.</p>
<p>The iPhone only works on one cellular service: AT&#038;T (T). The BlackBerry is available from Verizon (VZ), AT&#038;T, T-Mobile, Sprint (S) and other carriers. My group used T-Mobile before changing to the iPhone&#8217;s AT&#038;T service. </p>
<p>There will always be something on someone else&#8217;s device that looks more appealing than the one in your hand. </p>
<p>But the experience of using apps on the iPhone&#8211;and the huge selection of apps in the App Store&#8211;significantly enhance Apple&#8217;s device. </p>
<p>RIM is continually improving its own store, but it needs to move quickly to keep its loyal users contented. </p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>As the saying goes, you never get a second chance to make a first impression. But it never hurts to try. This week, I tested the T-Mobile myTouch 3G with Google (GOOG), which is the company’s second chance at introducing a “Google phone” to the masses.</p>
<p>Google’s first device, called the T-Mobile G1, came out in October and was less than a sensation. The phone had a touch screen and a handy slide-out physical keyboard, but it was bulky and unattractive. It came with just one gigabyte of memory and lacked important features like compatibility with Microsoft Exchange for use with work email. Its app store, called the Android Market, offered only about 50 applications. The G1 launched with surprisingly few accessories.</p>

<p>The $200 (with two-year contract) T-Mobile myTouch 3G (t-mobilemytouch.com) available Aug. 5, has fixed many of these problems. Its new design uses an on-screen keyboard, which gives it a thinner, more stylish build that feels great in the hand. It now comes with four gigabytes of memory, works with Microsoft Exchange and can record and play back video footage. The Android Market has increased its number of apps to about 6,300, and the myTouch will hit stores with accessories like designer shells and docking stations. Its combined voice and data plans are at least $25 less per month than what AT&#038;T’s (T) plans cost for users of Apple’s competing iPhone.</p>
<p>But while using it, I couldn’t help thinking that the myTouch felt less like a new device and more like what the G1 should have been in the first place.</p>
<p>The myTouch, which is built by HTC of Taiwan, runs on an improved version of Google’s operating system, that performs tasks faster has a more streamlined look and supports stereo Bluetooth connections. But it carries on many traits of its predecessor. It still synchronizes over the air with Google account information including email, calendar and contacts. Swiping a finger to the left or right on the myTouch’s home screen will still open other screens, with space for icons representing apps. And its handy window-shade-like Notifications menu can still be pulled down onto the screen at any time to show a list of new messages.</p>
<p>The most dramatic difference on the myTouch is its on-screen keyboard, which may frustrate some people who liked the G1 for its because it had a physical keyboard and a touch screen. Like on Apple’s (AAPL) iPhone, the myTouch keyboard corrects words as you type, recognizing you’ll make more mistakes on it than you would on a physical keyboard. The keyboard suggests words in a horizontal bar that appears above the keyboard and below the text area. You need only type “Washi” and the word “Washington” appears in this bar for you to select. These shortcuts speed up the otherwise frustrating process of on-screen typing.</p>
<p>Unlike on the iPhone, the myTouch keyboard’s keys don’t get larger as your finger hovers over them so as to help you touch the right key. Nor does a word become magnified when you’re trying to place the cursor at a certain spot. The myTouch’s trackball can be used to pinpoint a specific letter but I usually forgot all about the trackball, opting to use the responsive touch screen for navigation.</p>
<p>T-Mobile offers much less expensive monthly plans for the myTouch than AT&#038;T offers for the iPhone. The cheapest voice and data plan from T-Mobile costs $55 compared with AT&#038;T’s $70. Unlimited data and messaging plus minimum voice plans total $65 for T-Mobile and $90 for AT&#038;T. And AT&#038;T’s messaging is currently limited to text, while T-Mobile messaging includes text, picture and video.</p>
<p>On the other hand, T-Mobile offers 3G coverage in far fewer cities than AT&#038;T. The myTouch comes with only a fourth of the built-in memory of the same-priced the 3GS iPhone, and half the memory of the 3G iPhone model, which is costs half the price. And myTouch offers only about a tenth of the apps the iPhone offers, and has a smaller screen.</p>

<p>T-Mobile wants myTouch users to understand apps and download them, starting with the AppPack: a package of eight to 10 apps that T-Mobile will send to myTouch customers via an SMS with a link. Customers can peruse this list of apps and download just the ones they choose. While some people may not appreciate receiving apps suggestions, it could also introduce apps to people who didn’t know how they worked.</p>
<p>The Android Market, where all apps for Google’s phones can be found and purchased,still isn’t as well organized as it should be. It separates games from other applications and organizes them by popularity and date, but doesn’t separate those that are free and those that must be bought. I downloaded several free apps including WordGame, Facebook, Twitter, Sketch-a-Etch and Sherpa. But I was especially irked by the way some of the apps I downloaded kept trying to get me to download additional apps every time I opened them. The Twitter app, which was listed as one of the most popular, displayed prompts to download browsers and RSS readers—even six days after I first used the app. An on-screen message gave me the option to “Ignore Forever,” but this apparently didn’t include prompts to download other programs. Any user would be confused and irritated by these unsolicited messages. Google said that was what the developer chose to do—a major downside to the Android’s open model.</p>
<p>The myTouch’s 3.2-megapixel camera and video camera worked well and started up quickly. An icon labeled Gallery neatly holds still images and videos. And the myTouch has simple ways to upload photos to Picasa or videos to YouTube.</p>
<p>A built-in tool for Google Web searches using voice commands worked remarkably well, even when I tried to trip it up by saying four words at once. It didn’t recognize my last name, but I’ll let it off the hook since it’s spelled differently than it sounds.</p>
<p>The T-Mobile myTouch 3G costs $50 more than the G1, but its extra features are worthwhile. Be ready for a frustrating first-time experience with the on-screen keyboard and try to read user comments in the Android Market to figure out which apps prompt you to download additional programs. </p>
<p>The myTouch is what we expected from Google the first time around. Time will tell if people are ready to give it a second chance.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Every once in a while I watch an online video that&#8217;s good enough to send to a friend, share on Twitter and Facebook or save its URL so I can watch it again later. The final piece of the puzzle would be moving the video onto a mobile device to have it with me wherever I went.</p>
<p>Enter RealPlayer SP beta (<a href="http://realplayer.com">realplayer.com</a>), the latest in RealNetworks Inc.&#8217;s (RNWK) long line of media players that the company has churned out since 1995. RealPlayer SP—the SP stands for social and portable—is a free download that, once installed, grabs videos from the Web, converts them to the right format and transfers them to over a dozen portable devices. While other software programs perform two or just one of these tasks, the RealPlayer SP&#8217;s trio of talent makes it like a digital Swiss army knife.</p>

<p>After using the RealPlayer for moving several videos of all kinds to an iPhone, BlackBerry Curve 8900 and Palm Pre, I felt like I had more control over my portable devices and the media they held. And the freedom of knowing that this player is compatible with almost anything—including Apple (AAPL) and Palm (PALM) devices, Research in Motion&#8217;s (RIMM) BlackBerrys, T-Mobile&#8217;s G1 and Sidekick, Nokia&#8217;s (NOK) N97 and certain basic cellphones—is a major plus.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Behavior Problem</h5>
<p>My biggest problem with using the RealPlayer SP has to do with my own behavior. Most of the videos I watch online and share with friends are less than five minutes long. This means that grabbing, converting and transferring videos to a portable device using the RealPlayer SP—albeit a relatively quick process—could easily take more time than the length of the video, itself. And many of the longer videos that I would want to move to a BlackBerry or iPhone are copyright-protected and thus can&#8217;t be downloaded by the RealPlayer SP.</p>
<p>Another factor is that more devices now have their own built-in app stores for downloading content to the device, without plugging into a computer for transfers like with the RealPlayer SP. The iPod touch, for example, can now download movies, music videos and TV shows over Wi-Fi thanks to a recent $10 software upgrade.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Mac Version Coming Soon</h5>
<p>The RealPlayer SP works only on Windows PCs right now; a Mac version is due out by the end of this year. Likewise, it doesn&#8217;t work on Apple&#8217;s Safari browser but does work on Firefox, Internet Explorer and Google&#8217;s (GOOG) Chrome browser; I used all three with success.</p>
<p>If you&#8217;re not interested in using the RealPlayer SP for transferring videos to portable devices, you can still use it for downloading videos, saving them onto your computer and sharing them with friends via Twitter, Facebook or email. Tiny icons representing each of these sharing options appear in-line beside freshly downloaded videos. I shared videos of last week&#8217;s Congressional Luau at the White House via Facebook and Twitter, but the icon to share videos via Twitter doesn&#8217;t automatically shrink URLs to fit into a tweet. I shrunk the URLs myself, but this took an extra step<sup>1</sup>.</p>
<p>And though I&#8217;ve mostly focused on the RealPlayer SP&#8217;s ability to grab, convert and transfer (RealNetworks calls these tools the Downloader feature in the player), it also works as its own media player or helps you discover new content.</p>

<p>A premium version called RealPlayer Plus SP is available for $40. Premium features include DVD burning, DVD playback (if your computer can&#8217;t play DVDs) and video conversion to a special format called h.264—though the free version performs these conversions for videos being moved to Apple devices.</p>
<p>I jumped around the Web visiting sites and playing videos, which prompted the RealPlayer SP to display a small &#8220;Download This Video&#8221; message above videos that aren&#8217;t copyright-protected. Downloading videos worked on most sites, including <a href="http://AllThingsD.com">AllThingsD.com</a>, <a href="http://Slate.com">Slate</a>, <a href="http://YouTube.com">YouTube</a>, Salon and CNET. As expected, I wasn&#8217;t so lucky with videos from the New York Times, BBC and Hulu, which hosts loads of TV shows and music videos. That&#8217;s because videos from these sites were copyright-protected and didn&#8217;t allow for downloading.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">A Glitch</h5>
<p>In one instance with a <a href="http://WSJ.com">WSJ.com </a>video, only the short ad that played before the video was downloaded, even though the download prompt indicated that the WSJ video was obtainable using RealPlayer SP. RealNetworks says this is a glitch it knows about and plans to correct.</p>
<p>The RealPlayer SP&#8217;s ability to download videos and transfer them to devices, rather than just copying them onto computers, forced me to be choosier about the videos that I downloaded due to the limited memory of the devices. Because of this, I wished the RealPlayer SP Downloader had a better built-in way to discover downloadable content. Currently, a link to something called the RealGuide pulls up suggestions, but I had a hard time finding clips there that I wanted to download. RealNetworks says it plans to improve the video-discovery process in the future, including adding things like YouTube keyword searches built right into the Downloader.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">The Downloader Window</h5>
<p>When I did find videos I liked, I clicked on the prompt to download the clip, found the clip in a tiny Downloader window, and chose to move the clip to a device (there&#8217;s a list of all available devices) or share it via Twitter, Facebook or email. Transfer times depend on the length of the video.</p>
<p>RealNetworks provides simple instructions on making sure your device is set to transfer when plugged in. For example, BlackBerrys must be set to mass-storage mode, Palm Pres should be set to USB mode and Apple devices synchronize with the iTunes library, where RealPlayer&#8217;s converted videos are sent for transferring to iPhones and iPods.</p>
<p>RealPlayer SP can be a real help when it comes to putting the content that you want on your portable device. Its ability to assist from start to finish—finding videos, converting and transferring them—saves time and avoids confusion. To succeed, RealPlayer SP needs to do a better job of helping people find worthwhile videos to transfer, or they&#8217;ll stop using it after just a few tries.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>If you&#8217;re tired of the basic BlackBerry design (small keyboard with a small screen) or the iPhone design (a virtual keyboard on a large touch screen) you might prefer a device with a roomy physical keyboard that stays out of your way, hiding under a large screen until you need it. Over six years ago, a small company called Danger introduced just such a device, called the Sidekick.</p>
<p>Since then, Danger has been acquired by Microsoft Corp. (MSFT), and there have been many iterations of the Sidekick. This Monday, yet another version of the Sidekick will be released: the Sidekick LX. Its swing-out screen design hasn&#8217;t changed much over the years, but competitors have since produced several other devices that also have screens that move to reveal QWERTY keyboards &#8212; including the Google (GOOG) Android G1 phone, whose chief designer also helped create the Sidekick.</p>

<p>This week, I tested the T-Mobile Sidekick LX to see how this old chestnut fared with some new polishing inside and out. It still bears the flashy, hip features that distinguished older Sidekicks, and newly integrated social-networking apps for Facebook, MySpace and Twitter enhance these traits. A Download Catalog works like Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) popular App Store by bringing games, apps, themes and sounds directly to the device.</p>
<p>But this Sidekick&#8217;s pricing doesn&#8217;t make much sense in our current recession: It will cost $250 after a mail-in rebate for new T-Mobile customers who sign up for a two-year contract; current T-Mobile customers who are eligible for an upgrade will pay $200 after the same discounts.</p>
<p>For $200, you could buy Apple&#8217;s iPhone or Research In Motion&#8217;s (RIMM) BlackBerry Storm, which both have touch screens and come with Microsoft Exchange support that synchronizes the device with corporate email accounts. (T-Mobile says the Sidekick LX should be able to get Exchange support from the device&#8217;s Download Catalog &#8220;in the coming months,&#8221; but wouldn&#8217;t be more specific.) The Sidekick also lacks Wi-Fi capability, which is also true for the BlackBerry Storm but not so for the iPhone, which works with 3G or Wi-Fi networks.</p>
<p>The absence of a touch screen is glaring on such an expensive device, especially one with a screen this large. It&#8217;s easy to imagine using a finger to flick and spin the Sidekick&#8217;s on-screen menu wheel, tapping on one to open it. Instead, you&#8217;re stuck using a trackball to repeatedly scroll through a crowded, 15-menu wheel.</p>

<p>The LX is the thinnest Sidekick yet, but it still looked rather large lying next to my BlackBerry Curve 8300 and an iPhone; it measures 1.3 and 2.16 cubic inches larger than each, respectively. Compared with past Sidekicks, this one has a design that feels flatter thanks to a thin flip-out screen that smoothly blends into the device in its closed position. You have to lift up the nestled-in screen before it turns to flip out, and I found it a little harder to open with just a push of my left thumb.</p>
<p>The Sidekick LX, however, has some hearty extras including a generous 3.2-inch display, a 3G connection that makes it easy to use for quickly browsing the Web, built-in GPS and a 3.2-megapixel camera (like the BlackBerry Storm and new BlackBerry Curve 8900 cameras). It comes with a 1-gigabyte microSD card, but this memory card can be accessed only by pulling off the device&#8217;s back panel instead of via a card slot on the side.</p>
<p>I brought the Sidekick LX with me for a weekend in Boston and its good-quality camera came in handy as I wandered Copley Square and snapped photos of still-blooming tulips in bright colors. I signed into my Facebook and Twitter accounts, and updates from these networks flashed across the top of the screen in banner-like news flashes.</p>
<p>The Sidekick LX can play YouTube videos, and can record its own videos for uploading and sharing to Web sites. Its colorful screen has over twice the resolution of its predecessor and is 0.6-inch larger.</p>
<p>But a few awkward software designs left me scratching my head. After I uploaded a photo from the Sidekick LX to Facebook, I was left in the Facebook app, rather than my device&#8217;s photo album, where I started and wanted to be. MySpace updates are pushed to the Sidekick LX as they happen, but Facebook automatically updates only once an hour. Twitter can be set to check tweets as often as every five minutes, but, by default, it&#8217;s set to check only every 30 minutes &#8212; a glacial pace for Twitter fans.</p>
<p>I used the Download Catalog to buy a few apps, games and ringtones for my Sidekick, including a $6.99 game of &#8220;Who Wants to Be a Millionaire 2009&#8243;; a $2.99 flashlight app; and a $2.49 ringtone that played 15 seconds of Katy Perry&#8217;s song &#8220;Thinking of You.&#8221; T-Mobile says there are thousands of items in this catalog.</p>
<p>Calls placed and received on the Sidekick were remarkably clear-sounding to me and the friends I spoke with. Dialing numbers could be a little frustrating because, as was the case with former Sidekicks, you&#8217;ll need to open the flip-out screen to dial the number and then close it so you can hold the phone up to your ear. But most people will call friends in their address books and won&#8217;t need to use the number keypad.</p>
<p>The Sidekick&#8217;s 15 menus are simply too many to scroll through. I would prefer it if several categories were combined into one, such as Phone, myFaves (T-Mobile&#8217;s list of five friends you call), Phone Messaging and Address Book. Currently, these are listed as four separate menus. Simultaneously pressing the Sidekick&#8217;s Jump and Cancel buttons brings up a Quick Access view of recently opened menus and unread messages, and this eases navigation.</p>
<p>For its price, the Sidekick LX should be shipped with Microsoft Exchange already working, and all of its social-networking apps should have better updating capabilities. But most of all, the Sidekick&#8217;s big screen is just begging for multitouch in place of a trackball. If these features were part of the Sidekick LX 2009, it might be worth its price.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Apple&#8217;s iPhone has changed the game since its debut almost two years ago &#8212; building a powerful platform for on-the-go Web browsing and applications, in addition to making cellphone calls. Just a few months after the iPhone appeared, Apple (AAPL) introduced the very similar iPod Touch, which didn&#8217;t get as much attention, perhaps because its name understates the scope of its features.</p>
<p>The Touch resembles the iPhone, only thinner, with the same multitouch screen, fast Web browser, iPod media player and ability to run almost all of the 35,000 apps in Apple&#8217;s App Store. It doesn&#8217;t have a camera, or a few other iPhone features, and it can&#8217;t connect to cellphone networks, relying instead on Wi-Fi for its Internet connection.</p>

<p>The Touch has caught on: Apple recently indicated that it has sold 16 million of them. One reason for the popularity is that its freedom from a phone company eliminates pricey monthly bills. But the Touch can&#8217;t easily make voice calls right out of the box. So this week, I tested ways to make the Touch even more like the iPhone: apps that use the Internet to make phone calls.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Three Apps to Test</h5>
<p>I successfully tested three apps that can be downloaded free of charge from Apple&#8217;s App store &#8212; Skype, Fring and Truphone. Skype gave me the best connection, and my friends wouldn&#8217;t have known I was using it unless I told them. (Skype&#8217;s app is popular, with 2.8 million downloads in just four weeks.) Fring and Truphone let users make calls using Skype&#8217;s service within their apps, and they also run other programs like AIM and MSN Messenger. But Fring&#8217;s phone calls didn&#8217;t sound as clear, and I had technical difficulties with Truphone.</p>

<p>The downside to using these apps on an iPod Touch is that you must be connected to a Wi-Fi network. For a lot of people who work and live in areas surrounded by wireless networks, this won&#8217;t be a problem most of the time. But in those moments when mobility comes into play &#8212; like driving in a car &#8212; you&#8217;ll miss having a steady line through a phone carrier. You also can&#8217;t use these apps to make 911 emergency calls.</p>
<p>Another negative is that third-party applications can&#8217;t run in the background on the iPhone and iPod Touch. This means you can&#8217;t use a Touch for browsing the Web or reading email while waiting for a call from a friend via Skype or Fring. Fring offers an option that emails you when friends call or message, so you can sign on and call them back. Truphone has built-in voicemail. Skype doesn&#8217;t currently offer a notification feature.</p>
<p>(The next version of the iPhone OS is supposed to include notifications, which could improve the usability of these apps.)</p>
<p>The Touch comes in three models: an eight-gigabyte version for $229; a 16-gigabyte for $299; and a 32-gigabyte for $399. Because the Touch doesn&#8217;t have a built-in microphone, you must use something like the iPhone Stereo Headset, which costs $29 and has a microphone in its cord.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Skype Plans</h5>
<p>Free Skype accounts, which can be used for making calls with all three apps, take just a few minutes to set up. And calls from one Skype user to another are free. Skype calls to landlines or cellphones are relatively cheap. Skype Credit, a pay-as-you-go plan, charges 2.1 cents a minute in the U.S.; Skype Subscription is a flat monthly fee that costs $2.95 when used for calls made to and from the U.S. A monthly fee of $5.95 gets you unlimited calling to one country, and $12.95 a month pays for unlimited calls to 42 countries.</p>
<p>The Skype, Fring, and Truphone apps let you easily import contact names and numbers from your iPod Touch. They also enable instant messaging between you and your friends. Delightful sounds indicate incoming messages and calls, and these can be heard even when the headset isn&#8217;t plugged in &#8212; as long as you put the Touch down without closing the app.</p>

<p>I had the most success with the Skype app. My Skype-to-landline calls sounded perfect to my boss on the other end. Skype-to-cell and Skype-to-Skype calls sounded good, but weren&#8217;t always as clear; I used my Skype account to call a friend in New Orleans on her Skype account, and I heard echoing a couple times during our 30-minute chat. Skype says this could be attributed to the fact she was on a laptop.</p>
<p>Fring calls made using Skype &#8212; to landlines, cellphones, and other Skype contacts &#8212; weren&#8217;t as good as the Skype app. Friends&#8217; voices sounded slightly shaky and muffled. This kind of thing isn&#8217;t the end of the world in a quick chat, but could be a real burden during an important call. Fring offers a long list of add-ons, letting you sign in to various accounts all within the same app. These include Skype, MSN Messenger, ICQ, Google (GOOG) Talk, Twitter, Yahoo (YHOO), and AIM.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Technical Difficulties</h5>
<p>Truphone calls to landlines and cellphones sounded a bit fuzzy. Truphone is a service unto itself, like Skype, with free calls between Truphone users, pay-as-you-go plans and monthly plans. Like Fring, Truphone enables use of other programs within its app, like AIM and Yahoo Messenger. And it includes free voicemail. But the app didn&#8217;t always work for me.</p>
<p>A feature in all three apps lets you call an automated voice test line so you can hear how you sound before calling others.</p>
<p>These iPod Touch apps aren&#8217;t perfect, and the next version of the iPhone OS may let them can run more productively in the background. But making calls from the iPod Touch is a pretty cool experience when it works well, and free or low-price plans are an attractive alternative to cellphone carriers.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Your television set may be the most expensive, eye-catching piece of electronic equipment in your home, but compared to a computer with Internet access, it&#8217;s just a dumb box. With their low-tech IQs, TVs encourage a lot of family-room multitasking: While watching the big screen TV, lots of people are looking away to surf the Web with the computer on their lap or the mobile device in their hand.</p>
<p>But television manufacturers are sick and tired of sharing your attention with another device. So this week, Samsung Electronics introduced a television with truly integrated Internet smarts: the $3,000 Samsung LED TV 7000 with the Yahoo Widget Engine. It lets people watch TV and access the Web on the same big screen at the same time, with special on-screen applications that appear on a strip at the bottom of the screen and fetch online content. By this summer, <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=SNE'>Sony</a> (SNE) and LG Electronics also will offer TVs with the Yahoo Widget Engine, and Vizio will offer models soon thereafter.</p>

<p>I&#8217;ve been testing the Yahoo Widget Engine on a 46-inch Samsung TV, and I found it to be a lot of fun to use. It&#8217;s easy to navigate, thanks to special color-coded shortcuts on the TV&#8217;s remote control, and I didn&#8217;t have to abandon the show I was watching to look up a few things online. Widgets, which are small, easily downloadable computer applications, typically expand to a semitranslucent, overlaying panel on the left, or your program can be resized so you don&#8217;t lose any of the picture. The one major downside was that it uses a virtual keyboard rather than a physical keyboard for text entry. (You use the remote control to select text from an on-screen keyboard.) A good keyboard is essential for social networking widgets like Twitter, allowing quickly typed reactions to shows as you&#8217;re watching them. Samsung is planning to introduce a remote-control-based input method for next-generation TVs.</p>

<p>If you&#8217;re reading this and thinking that Internet on the TV has been tried before with limited success, you&#8217;re right. For years, companies have designed external boxes that bring some form of the Web to your TV. These include <a href="http://online.wsj.com/public/quotes/main.html?symbol=msft&#038;type=usstock%20usfund&#038;mod=DNH_S">Microsoft</a> Corp.&#8217;s (MSFT) Xbox, <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=aapl'>Apple</a> Inc.&#8217;s (AAPL) Apple TV and some features of TiVo (TIVO). But the Yahoo Widget Engine differs from these boxes in two ways. First, Yahoo&#8217;s widget system works simultaneously with your TV programming, so you don&#8217;t have to turn off the college basketball game to pull up a news story about a star player. Second, it will include widgets with video content that directly competes with live programming.</p>
<p>This second point is noteworthy because television manufacturers in the past have quashed applications with Web video content for fear of these programs competing with live shows. Yahoo (YHOO) says it won&#8217;t block widgets from its Widget Engine, so you could, say, run a Showtime widget that plays an episode of &#8220;The Tudors&#8221; instead of watching a live show.</p>
<p>The Yahoo Widget Engine comes preloaded on TVs with four basic widgets to start: Flickr (Yahoo&#8217;s photo service), Yahoo News, Weather and Finance. When prompted, these widgets appear in a horizontal dock along the bottom edge of the TV screen, along with Widget Gallery and Profile. (If you just want to watch TV, you can hide the widget dock easily.) Yahoo expects to offer 20 to 30 widgets within two months, and estimates that it will offer around 100 by the end of the year.</p>
<p>Samsung lent me an LED TV 7000 loaded with the four basic widgets and some extras that will be available in the Widget Gallery by early April: Twitter, Yahoo Video, USA Today Sports and three games (Sudoku, Texas Hold&#8217;em and QuizzMaster).</p>
<p>The Yahoo Widget Engine follows a model that encourages developers &#8212; even Yahoo&#8217;s competitors &#8212; to make widgets for its store-like Widget Gallery, where they will be available to download free directly on the TV. The system is similar to Apple&#8217;s highly successful App Store for the iPhone, and, like iPhone apps, these widgets will take seconds to download and are fun to try. The Yahoo widgets will work across all enabled televisions, regardless of manufacturer.</p>

<p>Samsung and Yahoo each have their own sub-stores of widgets within Widget Gallery. But users most likely won&#8217;t know or care which widgets are coming from what source because they&#8217;re all grouped into categories like Latest Widgets, Community and Messaging. Other TV manufacturers will be able to follow this model with their own stores, as well.</p>
<p>The Samsung LED TV 7000 connects to the Web via a wired connection or by using a wireless USB device, which Samsung sells for $80. Currently, Samsung offers four models with built-in Web access, which it calls Internet@TV. By June, the company plans to offer a total of 17 models with Internet@TV. All TVs with the Widget Engine will have remote-control shortcut buttons to pull up widgets.</p>
<p>With a local news station on in the background, I used the Yahoo Widget Engine to pull up Flickr in a left-side panel. After using the painfully slow virtual keyboard to sign into my Flickr account, I quickly skimmed through categories like Your Photos, Your Groups and Explore. I browsed photos from one of my Flickr groups, both in the side panel only and in full-screen slideshow mode, and tagging favorites with a yellow button on my remote control.</p>
<p>With a few steps, snippets of information, or shortcuts, can be created for certain widgets, like Yahoo Weather and Finance, to save you from opening the widget to see more details in a left-side panel. I created a Yahoo Finance snippet for McDonald&#8217;s (MCD) stock so I could see this stock&#8217;s status at the bottom of my screen without opening the Finance widget. People who have Yahoo accounts can synchronize their account settings with the TV, such as stocks saved in Yahoo Finance.</p>
<p>The Twitter widget automatically refreshes its content roughly once a minute, so you can see new tweets (updates) from the people you follow right in the horizontal dock. You also can see a list of the most popular phrases on Twitter, search Twitter and save searches.</p>
<p>Individual Widget Engine profiles can be created for up to eight people so that a 16-year-old doesn&#8217;t have to see his dad&#8217;s stock-market news in his profile. Widgets can be moved around in the horizontal dock so you can line them up according to your personal preferences.</p>
<p>The Yahoo Widget Engine is still in its early stages, and there are plenty of changes and widgets to come, not to mention televisions from manufacturers other than Samsung. But it&#8217;s easy to navigate and its remote-controls buttons &#8212; especially those with color coding &#8212; bring the Internet to your TV screen with just one click. If you want a smarter TV, the Yahoo Widget Engine will do the trick.</p>

But for many, physical keyboards are easier to use than touch screens, and this fact, alone, cures even the worst case of touch-screen envy.</p>

(RIMM) and T-Mobile will make available the latest version of the BlackBerry: the Curve 8900. This device works as a basic BlackBerry and doesn&#8217;t have a sleek touch screen or completely overhauled operating system, nor is it meant to compete with the likes of Apple&#8217;s iPhone. But it has a physical keyboard and still manages to look stylish &#8212; and that&#8217;s no small feat.</p>

<p>The Curve 8900 costs $200 after a $100 mail-in rebate and with a two-year T-Mobile contract. In the BlackBerry family, this model falls into the Goldilocks category of not too big, not too small &#8212; just right. RIM&#8217;s $300 BlackBerry Bold came out in November, but its large size and high price were turn-offs for some. The BlackBerry Pearl and Pearl Flip are tiny and portable, but use condensed keyboards with multiple letters on each key, which can hinder fast typing.</p>
<p>After using the new Curve for a week, I found it offers a satisfying combination of high-end features, ideal size and good looks. Best of all, its physical keyboard is a dream for thumbs. Unfortunately, its $200 price comes with very little memory &#8212; only 256 megabytes built in and a memory card that adds another 256 megabytes. To expand this memory, users must buy microSD cards.</p>
<p>The new Curve is lighter, thinner and not as wide compared with its predecessor. Its surface, including the keyboard, is glossy black with a striking silver frame. The device&#8217;s top edge slopes off in a smooth diagonal that cleverly disguises the Lock and Mute/Standby buttons beneath that top-edge piece of black plastic. Number keys are labeled in red so they stand out on the black keyboard and are easy to see when making phone calls. Right and left convenience keys on each side of the BlackBerry can be assigned to open your favorite functions.</p>

<p>Unlike older BlackBerrys that all use the same USB cables and chargers, the Curve 8900 has a micro USB port, which is slightly smaller than those on older cables and won&#8217;t work with them.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Photo Opportunity</h5>
<p>The Curve 8900 shares two features with the touch screen BlackBerry Storm: Both use the same 3.2-megapixel camera with auto focus, image stabilization, 2x digital zoom and flash; and both have the same 480&#215;360 pixel bright screen resolution. I used the camera on my Curve 8900 to capture some photos of Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C., a few days after the inaugural parade, and friends couldn&#8217;t believe I took them using a BlackBerry. This camera can also capture video clips.</p>
<p>I really enjoyed using the Curve 8900&#8217;s newly designed keyboard. Its keys are flatter than those of the old Curve, which felt like typing on plastic bubbles when I switched back. The flatter design of the new Curve&#8217;s keys made them feel less resistant, and allowed my fingers to more quickly move from one key to the next. The larger Send, Menu, Escape and End keys that surround the trackball also are flatter and are on the same plane as the screen, giving the surface a smoother look.</p>
<p>This BlackBerry uses T-Mobile&#8217;s Quad-band EDGE, not a 3G connection like the BlackBerry Bold or Apple iPhone. For an extra $10 a month in addition to a monthly plan, users may opt for T-Mobile&#8217;s Unlimited HotSpot Calling.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Wi-Fi Detector</h5>
<p>This feature works so that the Curve automatically detects when it&#8217;s near a pre-set Wi-Fi network and uses that network for voice calling or data instead of T-Mobile&#8217;s connection. Phone calls that are started in Wi-Fi networks will seamlessly be handed over to the T-Mobile network and the minutes won&#8217;t be docked from your data plan; calls started in the cellular network will switch over to Wi-Fi but will continue to dock minutes from your voice plan.</p>
<p>I made a handful of phone calls on the Curve, and the connection sounded clear on both ends. According to RIM, the battery life of the Curve 8900 beats that of the old Curve 8300 in talk time &#8212; 5.5 hours compared with four hours &#8212; but is a little weaker than the old Curve&#8217;s standby battery life, lasting just 15 days between charges, compared with 17 days. I didn&#8217;t run an exact battery test, but I noticed that I didn&#8217;t have to change my charging schedule from what I regularly do with the old Curve 8300.</p>
<p>I downloaded a few apps, including Facebook, Google Maps and TwitterBerry, and these worked as they do on my older Curve, though a bit faster. Compared with the iPhone&#8217;s selection, BlackBerry apps look rather primitive. RIM plans to open an app store in March that will sell apps that will work with this new Curve and other BlackBerrys. Apple (AAPL) and Google (GOOG) have already established app stores that users can access from their devices.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Too Little Memory</h5>
<p>This is where the 8900&#8217;s relatively minuscule memory becomes a problem. It&#8217;s easy to use up the 512 megabytes of total memory by downloading apps like these and taking large-sized photos or video clips with the built-in camera. Comparatively, the $199 iPhone comes with 8 gigabytes of built-in memory. But memory cards are fairly inexpensive today; a quick search on BestBuy.com (BBY) found 2-gigabyte microSD cards for $15.</p>
<p>A 512-megahertz processor gives this new Curve some zip, and I had no trouble quickly surfing the Web, opening Web links embedded in emails or attached photos and Word documents. Videos, including a John Mayer music video and various YouTube clips, played without any jerky skips. Sound was emitted from a small but mighty speaker on the back of the Curve.</p>
<p>Some people simply won&#8217;t abandon their physical keyboards for touch screen, no matter what. For them, the BlackBerry Curve 8900 blends the comfortable size, attractive keyboard and stylish design necessary to make a winning device.</p>

One way to make sure you&#8217;re getting the most for your dollar is to search the Web for product reviews. These reviews, usually consisting of ratings systems and comment sections, might give the finicky shopper a helpful glimpse into a real user&#8217;s experience with a product.</p>

<p>But reviews don&#8217;t always identify their authors&#8217; true motives. One item might be reviewed by a satisfied customer who bought the product, or it could be from someone who designed the product and wants to see it succeed. A review could even be from a manufacturer&#8217;s disgruntled employee who wants to see the product fail. Blogs can perpetuate such biased behavior by inviting people to submit reviews without verifying whether or not the members ever used the product.</p>
<p>This week, I tested <a href="http://Buzzillions.com" rel="external">Buzzillions.com</a>, a free Web site owned by San Francisco-based PowerReviews Inc. that mainly posts reviews from people who have verifiably purchased the product they are appraising, according to retailers&#8217; records. It also organizes reviews in specific categories, allowing users to search according to how they categorize themselves.</p>
<p>For example, someone shopping for sheets can label herself a budget, midrange or high-end shopper. A guy looking for a videogame console could call himself a gaming novice, casual gamer, frequent player or hard-core gamer. And someone on the hunt for the right shampoo could call herself a minimalist, beauty conscious or a product junkie. Selecting one of these profile labels whittles reviews down to only those best suited for the personality of the person buying the product &#8212; or perhaps receiving it as a gift.</p>
<p>The secret sauce behind Buzzillions is generated by surveys that over 300 retailers send to consumers. A few weeks after buying a product, consumers receive an email survey with a link to a Buzzillions questionnaire. These surveys ask consumers what they consider to be a product&#8217;s pros, cons and best uses, and its ranking according to the site&#8217;s best-out-of-five star rating system. And, following the Buzzillions formula, it asks these verified buyers to categorize themselves. Both verified users and unverified users, alike, can write reviews for the site, though verified users&#8217; reviews are more heavily considered in the &#8220;Buzzillions Rank&#8221; system.</p>
<p>The &#8220;Buzzillions Rank&#8221; shows a product&#8217;s standing in its particular category, based on an algorithm applied to the survey data. This formulated ranking is based on three things: a product&#8217;s star rating; the number of reviews it receives; and the reliability of its reviewers.</p>
<p>Though Buzzillions can&#8217;t prevent a person from posting multiple reviews on a product, it does search the site for duplicate content and users can notify the site if they doubt a review&#8217;s authenticity. This could trigger an investigation by the site that may involve tracking the Internet address of a reviewer, the times and frequency that a person posted reviews or even calling the person in question.</p>
<p>Buzzillions is particularly helpful when it comes to certain categories of reviews. The Electronics category, for example, is so populous that it must be divided into 17 subcategories with numerous smaller groups in each subcategory. This category can also be searched by brand.</p>
<p>But Buzzillions has its flaws. Not all products can be sorted with personality labels. And I found that some items were miscategorized. A &#8220;GPS&#8221; category included receivers, car navigation systems and wristwatches, but when I tried to narrow these products by selecting the &#8220;Automotive GPS&#8221; category, individual GPS data loggers and receivers still appeared instead of car-only devices like those from Garmin (GRMN) and TomTom. Buzzillions said it would correct this error, but products placed in the wrong categories could be highly confusing for someone unfamiliar with a product. Other categories, such as Shoes and Clothing, left me disappointed by the low number of represented brands and subcategories (i.e. shoes didn&#8217;t separate heels or flats from the pack).</p>
<p>Nothing is sold on Buzzillions.com itself, though the site does link to partner stores. But some product pages listed only one online store where the item could be bought. Buzzillions plans to fix this problem by listing about five to 10 online retailers per product.</p>
<p>People can use the site in two ways: as members, by signing up with an email and password and entering descriptions to create profiles of themselves and what types of products they like; or as unregistered visitors to the site. I tried both methods and found the member recommendations practical because they pointed out products I may not have found as quickly using searches. As a member, you instantly see a list of suggested products according to your profile as well as receive gift suggestions via email. And even using the site without becoming a member worked well, never making me feel like the best bits were only offered to registered members.</p>
<p>I really liked Buzzillions&#8217;&nbsp;&#8221;Review Snapshot,&#8221; a small at-a-glance box that lists pros, cons and best uses for a product. This snapshot also shows a product&#8217;s Buzzillions Rank, as well as its star ranking compared with the category&#8217;s star-ranking average. I saved a lot of time by skimming these concise snapshots rather than opening every review.</p>
<p>Buzzillions recently created a mobile version of its site, mobile.buzzillions.com, which runs on the iPhone&#8217;s Web browser and can be used for quick looks at reviews and top-10 lists. The company has plans to release an actual iPhone app that should be available soon via Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) App Store.</p>
<p>The more I used Buzzillions, the more I grew to depend on the site&#8217;s signature Buzzillions Rank, which is clearly listed on a big, bright-green badge. The top 10 products in each category are distinctly labeled, with the No. 1 item in a category getting a special ribbon. And this ranking held true to its formula and showed a product&#8217;s real standing: I often saw an item with a higher star-rating average receive a lower Buzzillions Rank because they had far fewer reviews compared with products with a higher Buzzillions Rank.</p>
<p>Another helpful stat that Buzzillions displays prominently with each review is the date that it was reviewed. I looked at a pair of tennis sneakers with a top-10 Buzzillions Rank, but some of that pair&#8217;s reviews were labeled with dates that were too old to be relevant for me. Electronics fans, of course, would care even more about these dates.</p>
<p>All told, Buzzillions does a good job of balancing reviews and culling the most-appropriate reviews for certain people based on personality traits. It currently has more than 3.6 million reviews, but will most likely continue to grow as more people use and rely on it, making it an even more valuable tool for shoppers.</p>
