			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>It can be hard to find just what you want in the 24-hour news cycle that constantly churns content out online.</p>
<p>One way to find the information you want is by setting up computer-generated alerts. These electronic notifications are relatively simple to use and offer a range of helpful services, from a virtual heads-up when your name is mentioned online to messages about a product&#8217;s price suddenly dropping.</p>
<p>For years, I&#8217;ve used Google Alerts as a way of keeping track of myself online. If my name is mentioned in a blog or if this column appears on the Web, such as on the site of a newspaper that syndicates it, a Google Alert sends me an email about it. Google Alerts can work for you to find a variety of things, such as telling you if a video of a favorite band popped up online or that a blogger posted something about last night&#8217;s episode of &#8220;Mad Men.&#8221;</p>
<p>In about a month, <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=goog'>Google</a> will begin delivering these alerts to users via feeds, as well as emails. Google (GOOG) certainly isn&#8217;t alone in the alerts arena, as Yahoo (YHOO), Microsoft (MSFT) and AOL (TWX) are also players. This week I tried two small companies that recently joined the mission to help users find the Web content using alerts.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Pinpointing Searches</h5>
<p>I tried Alerts.com and Yotify.com, and found worthwhile features in both. While Google Alerts does a good job of finding search terms in news, blogs and videos, Alerts.com and Yotify use forms that are a cinch to fill out and let you pinpoint your searches.</p>
<p>Alerts.com offers to notify users via email, SMS text messages or even voice calls to a cellphone or landline. The site organizes your alerts on a personalized Web page and uses a desktop application called Elertz to tell you when an alert has generated results. I liked this site&#8217;s flexibility: It not only gave me different ways to receive notifications, but also enabled a variety of options for time-specific deliveries of alerts.</p>
<p>But Yotify has advantages of its own, including the ability to integrate with FriendFeed and Facebook so friends can offer their recommendations or opinions. It also lets users search for event tickets or items auctioned on eBay (EBAY). And a smart preview panel gives you an idea of the type of results your search will return before you submit the request for an alert.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Viewing Results</h5>
<p>For now, Google Alerts and Yotify will send alert notifications only via email, though all three services will let you view your alert results online. All three are free, but SMS alerts sent to a cellphone via Alerts.com may not be, depending on your plan.</p>
<p>All in all, I found there were certain things each service was good at doing. For example, Alerts.com lets me know college football scores when I want them: only after the final score; at the end of each quarter and after the final score; or at the end of each quarter, after the final score and after each time a team scores points. Yotify gave me detailed options in a Craigslist search for furniture, including showing only listings with photos or just those that included the word &#8220;sofa&#8221; in a title; it will even hunt for a specific price range.</p>
<p>For the person who wants to spend minimal time creating basic alerts, Google Alerts will do the trick. These can be narrowed down to show results that fall into the News, Web, Blogs, Video or Groups categories, or you can perform more-blanketed searches using a Comprehensive category.</p>
<p>Alerts.com offers plenty of simple alerts that require only a bit of scheduling to set up. Each alert appears as a widget that can be expanded, edited or deleted with a simple click, and this page has a clean look with attractive, cohesive graphics.</p>
<p>I didn&#8217;t care much for Elertz, the desktop component of Alerts.com, because once installed, it notified me of new Alerts data using an irksome star that glowed red until I checked my notifications. Elertz didn&#8217;t work properly on my Windows XP machine until Alerts.com fixed a bug.</p>
<p>But Alerts.com&#8217;s price watch and price protection alerts are incredibly useful. Price watch looks to see if an item&#8217;s price drops into a lower price range, at which point users are notified. Price protection watches to see if products you bought are now on sale so you can get a refund. I tried both, and I&#8217;m hoping I&#8217;ll hear soon that a specific pair of Anthropologie boots is on sale.</p>
<p>Yotify uses the idea of virtual scouts that scour the Web for specific information. Scout findings can be condensed or expanded in one click, and results can be filtered for more specific findings or shared with friends via Facebook or FriendFeed.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Scout Work</h5>
<p>But some scouts took too much work to set up. When I tried to set up a scout for college football scores, I didn&#8217;t see a sports category (Alerts.com had a colorful NCAA icon right on its home page). Instead, I had to choose News, then select ESPN, then NCAAF and finally enter &#8220;Penn State&#8221; in a key word box for my scout. And after all that, the scout offered results only daily or hourly via email.</p>
<p>I would also prefer if I could better organize my scout lists. As it was, all of my results appeared in one list: The NCAA scout was right above the scout that found Obama mentions on Huffington Post, and below that were results for YouTube&#8217;s most-watched videos. Yotify says it will add ways to more neatly arrange data in the next month or so.</p>
<p>On average, Yotify returned more results instantly, such as 10 instant Craigslist sofa results compared with Alerts.com&#8217;s two in the first few hours.</p>
<p>Overall, these sites are worth trying so you can find which alert system works best for you and stop wasting time searching the Web the old-fashioned way.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Are you a member of the &#8220;I-check-my-email-constantly-even-when-I-know-no-one-has-emailed-me&#8221; club? If so, your mobile email device is never far and you&#8217;ve found yourself wondering how other people can leave unread emails sitting in their inboxes all day. On the other hand, those seemingly unplugged people are likely puzzled by BlackBerry addicts, wondering what could possibly be so urgent that they need to know about it the second it happens.</p>
<p>This week, I tested Peek, a device that might bridge the gap between these two camps. It&#8217;s made for those who don&#8217;t intend to become consumed with mobile email, and don&#8217;t need a combination phone, Internet, digital camera and email gadget. Yet from time to time, these people wish they had a better way to check emails without going home and turning on their computers.</p>

<p>Since I fit the constantly-checking-email description, I enlisted the help of someone who falls squarely into the category that Peek is targeting: my mother. Mom is constantly on the go, working on one project or another, and she doesn&#8217;t have time to consistently check her email. On more than one occasion, I&#8217;ve had to call her to talk about emails I sent that she didn&#8217;t yet read.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Stylish and Simple</h5>
<p>Peek is a stylishly thin device that, to a mobile email novice, could pass for a BlackBerry. It receives and sends email, period. Peek doesn&#8217;t have a Web browser, phone or built-in digital camera. It&#8217;s sold for $100 at Target and GetPeek.com, and costs $20 monthly for contract-free service. Most email accounts work with this gadget, including Hotmail, Yahoo, Gmail and AOL, and up to three accounts can be set to work on each device.</p>
<p>Peek Inc., a New York company that was started by former Virgin Mobile USA (VM) employees, mailed a Peek to my mom in Pennsylvania, and she has been using it for about a week with positive results.</p>
<p>I, too, tested a Peek, but I was more interested in my mom&#8217;s feedback since, prior to this test, she hadn&#8217;t used a mobile email device and I use two different ones &#8212; regularly. Overall, I&#8217;d suggest waiting until November to buy a Peek due to a handful of improvements that the company plans to add by then.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Winning Over a Novice</h5>
<p>My mom got the hang of Peek almost instantly and found it both helpful and relatively easy to use. She liked its full keyboard and the way most of its keys lit up and were familiarly placed like those on a computer keyboard &#8212; a feature I take for granted on my BlackBerry. Its price and stylish, thin look appealed to her, too. She tested an Aqua Blue Peek &#8212; though the device also comes in Black Cherry and Charcoal Gray. I knew Mom was catching on when she casually sent a message from her Peek late one night using the subject line, &#8220;What&#8217;s Up?&#8221;</p>
<p>My mom suggested a few improvements, and I agreed with all of them. The Peek can vibrate, chime and glow blue when new emails are received, but none of these indicators are particularly noticeable. For example, the chime sounds only once and neither my mom nor I could always hear it &#8212; even at its loudest setting &#8212; especially if it was in a purse. A blue indicator light on the Peek glows once every 10 seconds for 10 minutes after an email is received, but goes idle after that.</p>
<p>The font used on the Peek&#8217;s screen could stand to be a little bigger. My mom found words typed in all capital letters were easier and faster to read than the regular font, but she thought most people wouldn&#8217;t have too much trouble while using their glasses.</p>
<p>Peek Inc. says that by November, it will have added a louder chime, a constantly blinking indicator light and a larger font to the device. Also in November, people who purchase 12 months of service at once will get an extra month free.</p>
<p>Compared with my BlackBerry Curve, the Peek was thinner but I found its buttons and side scroll wheel a bit stiff. And Mom and I both found that the oft-used Space bar key was too tough to press down.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">One Inbox, Three Accounts</h5>
<p>The Peek&#8217;s straightforward system uses one inbox view (in which up to three email accounts are combined), one menu and a side scroll wheel for selecting commands. And though my mom didn&#8217;t seem to mind, the device&#8217;s overall navigation system came off as a bit clumsy to me. For example, rather than selecting an email to read it, I had to select an email, and then choose &#8220;Open Email&#8221; from a menu list. On most other devices, this can be done with one step.</p>
<p>But some BlackBerry tricks are built into the Peek, such as touching &#8220;T&#8221; to automatically go to the top of an email or inbox; &#8220;B&#8221; to go to the bottom; or &#8220;N&#8221; to move to the next email without navigating back to the inbox list. Likewise, the space bar serves as a built-in Page Down button. And holding a letter down will capitalize it.</p>
<p>Photo attachments can be easily opened on the Peek, though attached documents from programs like Word and Excel won&#8217;t open up.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Synching Contacts</h5>
<p>A simple step lets users synchronize their email account&#8217;s contact list with the Peek. My mom did this with an AOL account, and I did it with Hotmail, Gmail and .Mac accounts. Peek devices automatically check for email every two to five minutes, or if users can&#8217;t wait two minutes, they can initiate a Send/Receive manually and see an up-to-date queue of emails.</p>
<p>Peeks each have eight megabytes of usable memory, which can hold about 5,000 emails. Once a device reaches capacity, an on-screen prompt asks permission to delete the 500 oldest emails. Peek Inc. says a full battery charge will last about five days if a device handles around 10 to 15 emails a day; power users who send and receive 200 to 300 emails a day will get about two days of use from a full charge.</p>
<p>When asked, my mom concluded that she would probably buy a Peek, but said she still wasn&#8217;t sure that she had an urgent need to see email all that often. She also noted that Peek could become a Pandora&#8217;s box of sorts for people who, as they use it more often, might want to get more out of it &#8212; such as Google searches or other Web browsing.</p>
<p>Peek serves a purpose: It gives those who don&#8217;t belong to the &#8220;I-check-my-email-constantly&#8221; club a way to &#8220;peek&#8221; in on their emails and not feel so unplugged from friends and family. That alone, is reason enough to buy my mom one of these devices.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Instant-messaging programs, once the snobby little kids of the online communication world, have had to learn to play well with others.</p>
<p>AOL&#8217;s AIM started out with enough popularity to freely ignore the need to integrate with other programs; now, it can be argued that AIM retains its relevancy by operating with other messaging programs like <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=goog'>Google</a>&#8217;s Gmail chat and <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=aapl'>Apple</a>&#8217;s iChat. Other IM clients paired up with one another to increase usability, like when <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=msft'>Microsoft</a> and <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=yhoo'>Yahoo</a> became interoperable over two years ago.</p>
<p>But nowadays, social-networking offerings &#8212; like leaving messages on Facebook walls and receiving Twitter &#8220;tweets&#8221; from friends &#8212; compete with traditional instant-messaging programs. And advanced technology in mobile devices has helped these chats move from desktops to iPhones and BlackBerrys, where conversations can continue on-the-go, using mobile applications.</p>

<p>This week I tested three free programs that seem to acknowledge the fading star of isolated instant messaging, as we once knew it. Meebo, Adium and Digsby work by consolidating numerous messaging accounts into one combined program. Some of these include social-networking integration or even built-in email notifications, turning the service into a one-stop shop for online communication. The result can save people from choosing one IM system over another.</p>
<p>All three of these programs are straightforward and work without much effort or instruction. They require users to enter the user names and passwords to log onto each IM account, which may make some people uncomfortable, even though each site explains its privacy policy. Of the three, Digsby offers to integrate with the greatest number of programs all at once, including instant messaging, email and social-networking accounts. It also lets people handle email by deleting or sorting it directly in the IM window, which neither of the other programs does.</p>
<p>But Digsby isn&#8217;t yet usable on Macs or Linux, and Adium (the second-best offering) is available only on Macs. When used with the correct operating system, these programs perform as promised, easing communication overall and saving people the hassle of logging into various accounts &#8212; or missing out on chats with friends because of not signing into certain programs.</p>
<p>Meebo, <a href="http://www.meebo.com" rel="external">www.meebo.com</a>, is the only one of these three products that is completely Web-based. It works on all major browsers, including Internet Explorer, Firefox and Safari, and doesn&#8217;t require any installation &#8212; a plus for those who would like to be using instant messaging in the office but aren&#8217;t able to install software on corporate computers. It can log users into one of six messaging programs simultaneously, including Yahoo, Microsoft, AIM, Google, ICQ and Jabber.</p>
<p>I signed onto three instant-messaging accounts at once on Meebo by entering the username and password for each and selecting one overall &#8220;Sign In&#8221; button, which logged me into each program simultaneously and displayed all of my contacts in one condensed panel. Meebo can be configured to automatically launch within Firefox if a Firefox extension is downloaded.</p>
<p>Meebo.com is also usable on the iPhone and iPod Touch, allowing people to log into multiple accounts simultaneously from their mobile device. As of now, neither Adium nor Digsby has an application that allows it to work with the iPhone or iPod Touch.</p>
<p>Digsby, <a href="http://www.digsby.com" rel="external">www.digsby.com</a>, was a cinch to set up on my laptop, which was running Windows Vista. It walked me through the steps of adding accounts from instant-messaging programs, email accounts such as Gmail and Hotmail, and social-networking sites such as Facebook, MySpace and Twitter. Digsby works with IM and emails accounts from AOL/AIM, Yahoo, Microsoft and Google. Jabber, ICQ and Facebook chats also work with Digsby, along with IMAP and POP email accounts.</p>
<p>Once added, all of these accounts are represented in one clean panel. These consolidated communication programs saved me many extra clicks on my computer over a weekend, and I easily chatted with friends while checking messages. New emails received in my Gmail account were visible in a preview panel that popped up when I moved my cursor over the email account name. Right within this email preview panel, I could delete or archive each message; I was also able to mark a message as read or report it as spam. I performed all of these email tasks without opening my Gmail account in a browser or email client. Shortcuts in this preview panel labeled Open, Compose and Inbox sent me to my browser to perform these more-involved tasks.</p>
<p>This in-line functionality also applies to other email accounts, according to Digsby. But though I could see a tally of newly received Hotmail messages in my Digsby preview panel, these messages weren&#8217;t as interactive as those received in my Gmail inbox.</p>
<p>Digsby also tracks Twitter alerts and timelines, as well as Facebook newsfeeds and alerts &#8212; including posting notifications in your Digsby panel whenever someone &#8220;friends&#8221; you on Facebook.</p>
<p>Adium, <a href="http://www.adiumx.com" rel="external">www.adiumx.com</a>, wins points for cuteness. The downloaded program is represented by a goofy, green duck, which plops itself in the Mac operating system dock and closes its eyes when not in use. When new messages are received via Adium, this duck flaps its wings until you open the message. The Adium user interface incorporates sleek visuals, such as status windows that gracefully float above user names whenever a cursor moves over these names.</p>
<p>Adium works with AIM, ICQ, .Mac, Jabber, Google Talk, Windows Live Messenger and Yahoo Messenger. Adium supports new email notifications for some accounts, but doesn&#8217;t enable reading or sending email within the program. Instead, it offered to open my account via the browser or using Microsoft Entourage on the Mac. Social networking is limited to MySpace IM on Adium, though the next version will support Facebook Chat.</p>
<p>Adium organizes multiple conversations using tabs stacked at the bottom of a chat window. Icons line the top of each chat window, such as a file icon for transferring files and a lock that switches a conversation to be encrypted and off-the-record. Any conversation that isn&#8217;t designated encrypted is automatically stored in a table of Adium transcripts, which can be sorted by To, From or Date. Transcripts can be sorted using rough timelines like &#8220;within the past two weeks&#8221; or &#8220;since yesterday.&#8221;</p>
<p>I saved myself time and mouse clicks by using these three consolidation programs, though I preferred Digsby in the end because of its intuitive email integration. These programs will help to take down the instant-messaging barriers that have become turn-offs over the past couple years, and may better integrate IM with the social networks and mobile devices that are on the rise.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>When Pure Digital Technologies Inc. introduced its Flip point-and-shoot camcorder a year ago, it dramatically simplified video recording. The Flip measured the size of a small digital still camera, cost less than $150 and its videos could be emailed in one quick process. Consumers gobbled up the tiny, nonintimidating device.</p>
<p>But to the style-conscious set, the Flip looked like a clunky Fisher-Price toy &#8212; especially when compared with a sleek, new iPod or more-sophisticated digital cameras &#8212; and was too thick to comfortably slip into a pocket. Last fall, Pure Digital introduced an enhanced version: the Flip Video Ultra, but its biggest aesthetic difference was new orange, pink and green colors.</p>

<p>Today, the company will begin sales of its $180 Flip Video Mino (pronounced &#8220;minnow&#8221;), the hippest offering yet from Pure Digital. This 60-minute Flip includes many firsts for the company: rechargeable batteries; touch-sensitive buttons rather than old-school, push-down buttons; and a thinner build that measures 40% smaller, overall. The Flip Mino is also the first one in the family to enable publishing to MySpace (NWS); prior software limited Web-site sharing to YouTube (GOOG) and AOL (TWX) Video.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve been using a glossy, black Flip Mino (it also comes in white) for the past two weeks and it looks much cooler than older models. Its newly positioned USB adapter pops up from the top of the camera like something from a Swiss Army Knife. The Mino offers features such as the ability to lock the delete button, so no one accidentally deletes your videos, and mute all camera sounds, so as to record silently during quiet moments like wedding ceremonies or speeches.</p>
<p>I brought it along with me almost everywhere I went because of its small size and light weight, even fitting it into a thin clutch purse with a cellphone and BlackBerry (RIMM). I used the Mino in various situations ranging from bright, scenic outdoor settings to indoors while eating dinner in a candle-lit restaurant. Overall, I was pleased with the sound and picture quality of the Mino, and I found its built-in software, which automatically starts when the camera plugs into your Mac (AAPL) or Windows (MSFT) PC, to be a pleasure to use.</p>

<p>It took just a few minutes to trim excess footage from my videos before saving them to my computer or sharing them with friends and family. Another way to share videos from the Flip Mino is via Pure Digital&#8217;s server, which sends emails with embedded video links, saving upload and download time on both ends. Though I didn&#8217;t publish any of my videos on a public Web site, AOL, MySpace and YouTube were just one step away.</p>
<p>The Flip Mino&#8217;s touch buttons, while stylish, were difficult to use at first. I missed the tactile feel of physical buttons as I tried to hold this small video camera and press the zoom buttons using just one hand. The new, touch-sensitive buttons weren&#8217;t as satisfying and stable to use, and I pressed them accidentally more than a few times. For instance, the Zoom Out button is directly below Record, making it easy to mistakenly touch it. After about a week of using the Mino, I grew more accustomed to using these new touch buttons, but it shouldn&#8217;t take so long to make the adjustment.</p>
<p>Just looking at the Flip Mino&#8217;s fresh new exterior makes it hard not to think about the things that this redesigned camcorder is still lacking, like a larger viewing screen (the Mino screen is 1.5 inches, no larger than that of the Flip Ultra), high definition video and wireless sharing capability. These features would likely raise the price and/or tax the battery, and many users of the Flip flock to it for its low price and simplicity. Still, Pure Digital says that it will offer HD video and a larger screen on a product within a year, and is looking into features that might include wireless transferring.</p>
<p>I grew fond of the Mino&#8217;s rechargeable battery. Whenever I plugged this gadget into my computer to transfer videos, my Mino charged up via USB without me having to think about it. A full charge lasts four hours and recharging a dead battery takes about three hours.</p>
<p>Pure Digital says that the sound quality and lighting are improved in this model. Like previous models, this Flip records in 640&#215;480 pixels at 30 frames per second.</p>

<p>The Mino didn&#8217;t have a problem with lighting in most situations; indeed it did a nice job of capturing images of my family sitting around a table in a restaurant with little more than candlelight to brighten the picture. It doesn&#8217;t use a flash or a built-in light, but instead uses automatic sensors to adjust to various levels of light.</p>
<p>This svelte camcorder seemed to handle noise more evenly than I remembered in prior Flip models. It didn&#8217;t make my voice sound unbearably louder than everyone else&#8217;s, even though I was closest to the camera&#8217;s microphone, yet it managed to detect voices across the room. I did have some trouble on a windy day: While recording a quick video of a golf course in San Diego, wind audibly muffled my voice during a few moments in the video.</p>
<p>Along with the delete-lock and sounds-off settings, this Mino has a few other tricks up its sleeve. Each of the touch-sensitive buttons is designed to glow only when usable, so as to better help people who might not know which buttons to press while using this camcorder. For example, only the zoom buttons glow while recording since the other buttons (volume, play/pause and delete) can&#8217;t function in this setting.</p>
<p>Shortcuts built into each button provide more functions: Holding the play/pause button down will set the playback mode to play all videos on the Mino; holding the seek ahead or seek back buttons while watching a video will fast-forward by seconds within that video; pressing the record button as the camera starts up opens up the settings menu.</p>
<p>In conjunction with the Flip Mino&#8217;s introduction Wednesday, prices of the former Flip Ultra model will drop to $150 for the 60-minute model. The Flip Ultra 30-minute model will be phased out, as will the Flip Classic, which will cost $130 for a 60-minute unit.</p>
<p>Though the Flip Mino&#8217;s touch-sensitive buttons look great, they aren&#8217;t as functional as they needed to be. But if you really want a sleek, hip-looking gadget, you&#8217;ll learn to adjust to these new buttons. No matter which Flip you choose, Pure Digital&#8217;s software changes the way people capture and share videos, and that&#8217;s a great thing.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>A few weeks ago, I received a dreaded phone call at 8:30 a.m. telling me he wasn&#8217;t going to make it. The &#8220;he&#8221; in this case was my car, and the bearer of bad news was my mechanic. My 1994 Saab bit the dust when its timing belt broke, and after discussions about the cost of the repair versus the value of the car, I accepted the fact that I&#8217;d need to start looking at buying another vehicle.</p>

<p>I headed online to start researching (I was looking for a used car) but was overwhelmed by an avalanche of information. Everyone seemed to have something to say about cars, whether in blogs, community forums, editorial reviews, Kelley Blue Book values, Carfax reports or local dealer sites. As I discussed my findings with friends and family, more people than not were surprised to hear about the variety of research and price comparisons available online.</p>
<p>This week&#8217;s column is an overview of sites that may help you or someone you know browse for a new or used car on the Web. I used sites ranging from trusted resources like <a href="http://ConsumerReports.org" rel="external">ConsumerReports.org</a> to search engine tools like Yahoo Autos. This column can&#8217;t possibly mention every car-searching resource on the Web; rather, it&#8217;s just a taste of what&#8217;s available.</p>
<p><a href="http://Edmunds.com" rel="external">Edmunds.com</a> and ConsumerReports.org both feature informative data on a number of new and used vehicles. Edmunds is a free site specifically geared toward cars, including an online magazine for enthusiasts called Inside Line and a Web forum for discussions about automobiles called CarSpace. I used various tools on Edmunds.com, including one that estimates the true cost to own a specific car over time. I especially enjoyed reading an article titled &#8220;Confessions of a Car Salesman,&#8221; which proved uncanny in predicting a range of tricks and techniques the salespeople used when I first visited a car dealership.</p>
<p>Edmunds offers a four-step pricing system, which includes getting quotes from dealers, and a payment calculator, which estimates monthly payments. Edmunds teams up with <a href="http://AutoTrader.com" rel="external">AutoTrader.com</a> to help perform searches for certified pre-owned or used cars online.</p>
<p>Consumer Reports covers products as well as cars but keeps much of its most useful data behind a Web-site subscription, which costs $26 annually or $5.95 monthly (magazine subscribers can pay a discounted price of $19 a year). You need this subscription to access CR&#8217;s respected ratings and certain sections of its Web forums. These ratings were helpful to me, as they assessed numerous aspects of specific car models, including trouble spots by year, performance, safety and fuel economy.</p>
<p>CR also offers valuable lists such as &#8220;All Recommended Cars,&#8221; &#8220;Best and Worst Used Cars&#8221; and &#8220;Reliable Used Cars by Price.&#8221; A car-buying calculator is an asset to this site that helps you decide whether it would be smarter to buy or lease a vehicle.</p>
<p>Google, Yahoo and AOL all present special search-results pages when you search for a specific car for sale, using drop-down menus and various ways to sort results. Google Base for automobiles, found by selecting &#8220;Vehicles&#8221; from <a href="http://www.google.com/base" rel="external">www.google.com/base</a>, is a list of data submitted to Google. Drop-down menus help broaden or narrow results by sorting the data according to certain attributes, such as make or price. Vehicle-search results can be viewed in one of three formats: List View, Table View or Map View &#8212; an illustration of each car&#8217;s location in relationship to a Zip Code. I found Table View most useful because it organized data in smart, spreadsheet-like displays so I could quickly skim through columns listing price, color, amenities and mileage.</p>

<p>But not all car searches within Google Base returned the same drop-down-menu options for sorting. In a few instances, I couldn&#8217;t sort my search results by model year. Google Base does show the date on which each car was listed.</p>
<p>Yahoo Autos, found at <a href="http://www.autos.yahoo.com" rel="external">www.autos.yahoo.com</a>, teamed up with <a href="http://Cars.com" rel="external">Cars.com</a> to offer richer content, including a Car Finder feature that helps people narrow down what type of new car they might like according to price, driving style and fuel (type and economy). Yahoo even tries to answer car questions with its Yahoo Answers Q&amp;A tool, which lets people submit questions. I found user reviews on this site, as well as expert reviews provided by <a href="http://NewCarTestDrive.com" rel="external">NewCarTestDrive.com</a>, an auto-review site.</p>
<p>The used-car section in Yahoo Autos reminded me of Google with its drop-down menus and results that displayed in list or map views. List view shows plenty of information in one glance, including an image of the car for sale and the number of additional available photos. From this list, users can link directly to view or order Carfax reports or email the dealer, saving time wasted on excess mouse clicks and browsing.</p>
<p>AOL Autos, found at <a href="http://autos.aol.com" rel="external">http://autos.aol.com</a>, does a nice job of integrating Web 2.0 features such as pop-up menus that appear within a page rather than in an entirely new Web page. Vehicle-search results are found by entering a few criteria for a new or used car, and used-car results can be further narrowed by adding or subtracting desired specifics listed on the far left of the screen. Some specs include model type, engine, year or extras like heated seats or a sunroof.</p>
<p>This site can also condense numerous used-car listings into one graph that illustrates car prices in relationship to mileage or year. Selecting any point on the graph reveals a short description of a vehicle&#8217;s location, price and mileage. For new cars, AOL Autos offers lengthy expert reviews from NewCarTestDrive.com, as well as user reviews.</p>
<p>Both Yahoo Autos and AOL Autos walk users through steps to get price quotes from dealers for new cars.</p>
<p><a href="http://Carfax.com" rel="external">Carfax.com</a> provides car-history reports using vehicle-identification numbers, or VINs. For a $30 fee, used-car buyers can use Carfax.com for 30 days. This report shows a vehicle&#8217;s history such as if it was a rental or not, how many different owners it had, how long each owner possessed the vehicle and where it came from. Tips pop up within these reports, including one that warned me about &#8220;curbstoning,&#8221; a term that describes an individual without a dealer&#8217;s license looking to sell a number of cars by posing as a private seller.</p>
<p>As can be expected, many newspaper Web sites offer automobile sections that display digitized classified ads, so be sure to check your local paper&#8217;s Web site.</p>
<p>At the end of the day, test-driving a car will be a true test as to whether or not you like it &#8212; no matter how much research you&#8217;ve done online. But knowing your stuff before you visit a dealership can save money and time.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>A number of my friends, ranging in age from mid-20s to early 30s, are in no rush to abandon their basic cellphones for smart phones like BlackBerrys or Treos. It&#8217;s not for lack of technological skill; these people are constantly text messaging and emailing, and spend a huge amount of time online every day. But they&#8217;d rather not carry a large, geeky-looking device. Nor do they want to pay a lot for this device and its monthly plan. Some of them even assume that smart phones work only with corporate email accounts.</p>

<p>The two companies most often associated with corporate-issued devices, <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=rimm'>Research In Motion</a> Ltd. and <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=palm'>Palm</a> Inc. are anxious to convert people like my friends. This week I tested Palm&#8217;s new attempt: the Centro (<a href="http://www.palm.com/centro" rel="external">www.palm.com/centro</a>). It looks like a hip, miniature version of the more expensive Palm Treo, with most of the same functions and only costs $99 after rebates and a two-year contract. The Centro comes in onyx and ruby, though the latter won&#8217;t be sold until next month.</p>
<p>Overall, I liked the Centro. It has plenty of pluses, including a touch screen, easy email set-up for personal accounts like Gmail and Hotmail, built-in instant messaging for three programs, a camera for still shots or video and expandable memory. It&#8217;s available now and runs on Sprint&#8217;s fast 3G network, costing at least $15 monthly for data on top of your voice plan. Like the Treo, it has a tiny stylus for detailed screen selecting and an on/off ringer switch.</p>
<p>RIM should be credited with introducing one of the first hip, mini smart phones to the demographic of 25-to-30-year-olds without smart phones. About a year ago, it brought out the $200 BlackBerry Pearl 8100, which is narrower than traditional BlackBerrys and is easy to mistake for a stylish cellphone. It uses a condensed keyboard with two letters per key that works using auto-correcting SureType technology, and has a glowing trackball for navigation.</p>
<p>For Palm&#8217;s Centro to compete with the Pearl, it, too, needed to be thinner left to right. But instead of doubling up letters per key and using SureType like the Pearl, the Centro has a shrunken version of Palm&#8217;s full keyboard; letter keys are squeezed so close together that large-fingered users will likely have trouble. I found the Pearl&#8217;s keyboard easier to use because its keys are flatter and larger compared with the Centro keys, which caused me to mistype messages. But the Centro&#8217;s tiny keyboard could be a real step up for people who still use their cellphone&#8217;s numbered keypad to type text messages.</p>
<p>The Centro&#8217;s touch screen saves time and makes navigation easier. The BlackBerry Pearl doesn&#8217;t have a touch screen, forcing users to do a lot of scrolling with the navigational trackball.</p>
<p>A success with the Centro would be much needed good news for Palm, which hasn&#8217;t had an easy go of it lately. While RIM has been cranking out more stylish BlackBerrys, Palm&#8217;s solid Treo hasn&#8217;t changed all that drastically in the past couple of years. Even loyal Treo users are starting to complain about Palm&#8217;s old operating system crashing. Of course, the popularity of <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=aapl'>Apple</a> Inc.&#8217;s iPhone only rubs salt in the wounds of this once unstoppable company.</p>
<p>RIM will bring out a new Pearl, the 8130, next month to step up its game. This Pearl will be the same physically, but will have some internal changes, including the ability to work on the CDMA network, built-in GPS and upgraded software.</p>
<p>I tested a stylish ruby Centro and also got my hands on an early version of the BlackBerry Pearl 8130 from Verizon Wireless. Lined up side by side, the Palm Centro looks like a chubby version of the Pearl. The Pearl looks and feels sleeker and sharper than the Centro, due in part to the Centro&#8217;s rounded edges and tiny, bubble-shaped keys.</p>
<p>The Pearl is just a hair smaller in all directions &#8212; width, height and depth. The Centro is almost a full ounce heavier than the Pearl, but each weighs only 4.2 and 3.4 ounces, respectively. The Centro&#8217;s 320&#215;320 resolution screen looks brighter than the Pearl&#8217;s 240&#215;260 screen.</p>
<p>I focused on the Centro, setting up two personal email accounts on it in just a few minutes. I started out typing very slowly on the keyboard, which has keys made of a slightly sticky material. The more familiar I became with it, the faster I could go, but I&#8217;m still not completely comfortable using the keyboard.</p>
<p>I quickly navigated through the Centro&#8217;s menus using Palm&#8217;s familiar operating system. The touch screen saved me from arrowing around to select an icon or menu; I just tapped the screen using my finger or the stylus. First-time smart-phone users will appreciate this aspect.</p>
<p>I made calls on the Centro, pressing the phone shortcut key to get started. The keyboard&#8217;s number keys work just as they do on a Treo, but I preferred using the larger virtual buttons on the touch screen. The Centro felt like a normal cellphone in my hand and against my ear, especially compared with the clunky, rectangular Treos and BlackBerrys. The tiny Centro fit into the smallest purse I own.</p>
<p>An icon on the home screen marked &#8220;IM&#8221; linked me directly into a screen where I could log in to and use three instant-messaging programs simultaneously: AOL&#8217;s AIM, Yahoo Messenger and Windows Live Messenger. I jumped between IM sessions using the left and right navigation key buttons. But a faster way to do this was just by touching the screen to select a program. I also tapped the screen to select names of friends before IMing them. Again, the touch screen saved time and took out the guesswork of which key to press to navigate.</p>
<p>I played preloaded music on the Centro and BlackBerry Pearl; both have built-in speakers that sound remarkably good for such little devices.</p>
<p>Battery life on the Centro is estimated at 3.5 hours of talk time and up to 12.5 days of standby time. The Pearl 8130&#8217;s talk time is expected to fetch 3.8 hours before quitting, but its standby battery is expected to last only nine days. I didn&#8217;t perform rigorous battery tests, but found that my BlackBerry Pearl needed to be charged before my Palm Centro after a weekend of using them for roughly the same amount of time.</p>
<p>The BlackBerry Pearl 8130 comes with only RIM&#8217;s BlackBerry Messenger program. Both the Pearl and Centro have 64 megabytes of internal memory and the ability to expand that using microSD cards.</p>
<p>If you&#8217;re considering the leap from a cellphone to a smart phone but don&#8217;t want the bigger, geekier look of one of these helpful devices, the Palm Centro is a good option. Its keyboard will take some getting used to, but its touch screen will win you over by providing a simpler way to navigate &#8212; especially for smart-phone novices.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Some fascinating results can be produced when you scour the Internet using a giant search engine like Google&#8217;s. You can discover the seedy past of a creep you might have otherwise dated, find directions to the nearest Thai restaurant, or instantly learn how many inches are in a mile (63,360).</p>
<p>But searching for video, the hottest content on the Web right now, isn&#8217;t easy. Sure, you can go to Google&#8217;s popular YouTube site and look for clips stored there. But that won&#8217;t find videos from other sites, especially copyrighted clips that YouTube doesn&#8217;t offer or has removed from its site.</p>
<p>This week, I tested four video-search engines, including revamped entrant Truveo.com, a smartly designed site that combs through Web video from all sorts of sources ranging from YouTube to broadcasting companies. Truveo, a subsidiary of AOL, is stepping out on its own again after spending three years in the background, powering video search for the likes of Microsoft, Brightcove and AOL itself. It unveiled its new site last week, though I&#8217;ve been playing with it for a few weeks now.</p>

<p>This Web site, <a href="http://www.truveo.com" rel="external">www.truveo.com</a>, operates under the idea that users don&#8217;t merely search for video by entering specific words or phrases, like they would when starting a regular Web search. Instead, Truveo thinks that people don&#8217;t often know what they&#8217;re looking for in online video searches, and browsing through content helps to retrieve unexpected and perhaps unintended (but welcome) results. I found that, compared with other sites, Truveo provided the most useful interface, which showed five times as many results per page as the others and encouraged me to browse other clips.</p>
<p>In effect, Truveo combines the browsing experience of a YouTube with the best Web-wide video-search engine I&#8217;ve seen.</p>
<p>The other video-search sites I tested included Google&#8217;s (<a href="http://www.google.com/video" rel="external">www.google.com/video</a>) and Yahoo&#8217;s (<a href="http://www.video.yahoo.com" rel="external">www.video.yahoo.com</a>), as well as Blinkx.com (<a href="http://www.blinkx.com" rel="external">www.blinkx.com</a>). None of these three sites do much to encourage browsing; by default they display as many as 10 results per search on one page and display the clips in a vertical list, forcing you to scroll down to see them all. The majority of clips watched on Truveo, Yahoo and Blinkx direct you to an external link to play the video on its original content provider&#8217;s site &#8212; which takes an extra step and often involves watching an advertisement.</p>
<p>Searching on Google video almost always displays only content from Google and its famously acquired site, YouTube. The giant search company is working on improving its search results to show a better variety of content providers. Still, the upside here is that clips play right away in the search window rather than through a link to the site where the video originated. YouTube works this way because its clips are user-generated &#8212; either made by users and posted to the site or copied from original host sites and posted to YouTube, saving a trip to the original content provider&#8217;s site.</p>
<p>Yahoo&#8217;s video-searching page looks clean and uncluttered, with a large box for entering terms or phrases with which to conduct searches. Two options &#8212; labeled &#8220;From Yahoo! Video&#8221; and &#8220;From Other Sites&#8221; &#8212; help you sort results in one step. But the clips that I found on Yahoo video seemed less relevant, overall, and included more repeated clips. One search for the Discovery Channel&#8217;s &#8220;Man Versus Wild&#8221; show returned seven clips, four of which were identical.</p>
<p>Blinkx, a three-year-old site, distinguishes itself with its &#8220;wall&#8221; feature &#8212; a visually stimulating grid of moving video thumbnails. It is like Truveo in that it also works behind the scenes for bigger companies, including Ask.com. Blinkx says it uses speech recognition and analysis to understand what the video is about, while the others stick to text-based searching. And this seemed to hold true: I rarely got results that were completely off-base using Blinkx.</p>
<p>But Truveo&#8217;s focus on browsing and searching worked well. It repeatedly displayed spot-on results when I was looking for a video about a specific subject, or provided a variety of other videos that were similar, requiring less overall effort on my part. Its most useful feature is the way it shows results: by sorting clips into neatly organized buckets, or categories, such as Featured Channels, Featured Tags and Featured Categories. These buckets spread out on the page in a gridlike manner, giving your eye more to see in a quick glance.</p>

<p>This grid also lets you change the direction of your search quickly. Tabs at the top of the page can re-sort your results according to Most Viewed Now, Today, This Week, This Month or of All Time. Three more tabs rearrange the results into Highest Rated, Most Recent (my personal favorite) and Most Relevant.</p>
<p>The other video-search sites offered fewer details, overall, about each clip. This meant that I had to waste time opening and watching clips to discern whether they were what I wanted to see.</p>
<p>I searched for a variety of things, including a new television series called &#8220;Mad Men&#8221; on AMC that has me hooked. The show is still just gaining popularity, so I was curious to see what my video search would return. A single Truveo search can display as many as 51 results on a page, and the bucket organizational system placed all of these results into a layout that didn&#8217;t look overwhelming. Of the four sites, Truveo had the highest number of clips related to the actual television show: 32 out of 51. On the other sites, all of which show 10 results per page, all of the Blinkx clips, five of the Google clips and eight of the Yahoo clips were relevant.</p>
<p>With the exception of a few clips, Truveo search results include a thumbnail image of each video, its title, channel and category, and a line about how old the clip is and how many times it has been viewed.</p>
<p>The top 15 results &#8212; grouped into three columns of five clips each &#8212; feature slightly larger thumbnail images, and moving a cursor over one of these larger images shows a brief summary of that clip.</p>
<p>If your search generates numerous relevant clips on a well-known Web site, a special bucket is created at the top right of Truveo&#8217;s results page that will hold just that site&#8217;s clips. For example, if you were to search an MTV show that&#8217;s popular enough to have a lot of clips available directly through the MTV.com Web site, a bucket is designated just for MTV.com clips.</p>
<p>Truveo is considering selling this prominent bucket as an advertisement in the future, but for now, no ads appear on the video-search site.</p>
<p>With so many videos added to the Web each day, the search for online clips can be fruitless and tiresome. Truveo starts users out with enough relevant clips right away so that they can more easily find what they&#8217;re looking for. And its organizational buckets encourage browsing and, therefore, entertainment &#8212; one of the reasons for Web video&#8217;s popularity.</p>
<p>Truveo takes a refreshing look at video search, and as long as you have the patience to travel to sites where content originated, you&#8217;ll find it useful. It stands apart from other search engines in looks and functionality.</p>

<p>Thanks to faster computers and higher bandwidths, many Web sites now contain video of one kind or another. Slow, stuttering footage is a thing of the past, and video-sharing Web sites are hot commodities, demonstrated last year when Google bought YouTube for $1.6 billion.</p>
<p>You can browse the Web watching videos until your eyes glaze over, but you can&#8217;t easily save any of that video footage to your computer in an organized library. So while your photos, music and email can be neatly categorized and revisited on your computer&#8217;s hard drive, videos that you see online may never come your way again.</p>
<p>This week, I tested the newest version of <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=rnwk'>RealNetworks</a> Inc.&#8217;s RealPlayer, which offers a distinctly useful feature: the ability to copy any video from the Internet onto your PC, as long as it isn&#8217;t protected by a copyright. This player, which was just released in its beta (or testing) version last month, is available as a free download from <a href="http://www.realplayer.com" rel="external">www.realplayer.com</a>.</p>

<p>Once downloaded, RealPlayer 11 smartly runs on Microsoft&#8217;s Windows XP or Vista machines in the background, only making its video-copying capability known when a video appears on a Web page in your browser. A tiny message labeled &#8220;Download This Video&#8221; pops up from the video viewing screen, and when selected, this initiates a download of the entire video. You don&#8217;t need to be at the start of the video to copy the whole clip. In fact, you can copy an entire video without watching it (I used RealPlayer 11 to copy videos for watching later when I didn&#8217;t have a column to write). Saved videos can be shared with friends, organized into playlists or burned onto CDs.</p>
<p>I tried RealPlayer 11 on my Windows XP desktop and on my Vista laptop, using both Internet Explorer 7.0 and Mozilla&#8217;s Firefox 2.0 without problems. Being able to copy videos made me realize how many clips I watch online, footage that might otherwise have been forgotten had I not saved it on my computer. Granted, not all the videos that one watches online are worth capturing, but it&#8217;s nice to have the ability to save them with just a mouse click.</p>
<p>I missed being able to use RealPlayer 11&#8217;s video downloading on my Apple computers, but RealNetworks says it will make its player usable on Macs before the end of the year. The company also says it is working on plans to make these saved videos transferable to portable players, including Apple&#8217;s iPod, so that after downloading numerous videos, you need not be tied to your computer to watch them. In the case of longer videos, downloading took more time, and I wished this RealPlayer made it possible to watch videos shortly after they started downloading, like Apple does with movies downloaded from its iTunes Store.</p>
<p>Downloading this new RealPlayer was surprisingly painless &#8212; a welcome change compared with my experiences downloading the company&#8217;s previous players. In three quick steps, I downloaded RealPlayer 11, accepted a license agreement and adjusted a few settings such as whether or not I wanted to use RealPlayer 11 by default for playing all videos on my PC. I was never prompted to enter my date of birth or email, like RealNetworks downloads in the past.</p>
<p>I visited various sites to retrieve video footage, including YouTube, AOL videos, Google videos, sports Web sites, television network sites and news sites like <a href="http://WSJ.com" rel="external">WSJ.com</a> and <a href="http://AllThingsD.com" rel="external">AllThingsD.com</a>. Every popular video file format is supported. To save time, RealPlayer 11 lets you download multiple videos at the same time; a small window shows the status of each download, including how much time remains for each download and an option to cancel the download. There are no limits to the number of videos you can download simultaneously, as long as your Internet bandwidth can manage.</p>
<p>I copied numerous videos, including the first episode of my new favorite TV show, ABC&#8217;s &#8220;Traveler,&#8221; a music video from country singer Keith Urban and a National Geographic video on bowhead whales. After gathering a bunch of clips, I organized some of them into playlists and sent others to friends by selecting &#8220;Share Video Link&#8221; from the top of the screen, entering emails and a personal message about each clip. These emails are sent with embedded links to other sites, like YouTube, and the recipient doesn&#8217;t need RealPlayer 11 to see the videos, though a link for this free download appears at the bottom of the emails.</p>
<p>If a video is copyright protected, the &#8220;Download This Video&#8221; message that enables copying is replaced by a message that says &#8220;Video Cannot Be Downloaded&#8221; with a one-line explainer on digital rights.</p>
<p>(To the chagrin of content owners, this isn&#8217;t as much of an impediment as they hoped, because a large amount of video content is illegally posted online. Even if a video was originally posted in a protected format, someone may have copied it and re-posted it illegally with the protection stripped off. RealPlayer will copy these clips, as it can&#8217;t tell whether they were originally meant to be protected.)</p>
<p>In a couple instances, videos didn&#8217;t display messages about downloading or not downloading, in which case I wasn&#8217;t able to copy the video. RealNetworks says this is a rare occurrence.</p>
<p>RealPlayer 11 can also be used to record live streaming video in real time, like the constantly recording panda camera that was set up to document every move made by Tai Shan, the giant panda born in Washington&#8217;s National Zoo two years ago. I tested live recording by capturing a live stream of video from <a href="http://CNN.com" rel="external">CNN.com</a> for 35 minutes. But RealPlayer 11 can&#8217;t be set to record certain programs or at certain times like TiVo does with television.</p>
<p>Though I focused on its video-copying capability, RealPlayer 11 is still a media player in its own right. It is divided into six categories at the top of the screen: Now Playing, My Library, Real Guide, Games, SuperPass and Burn/Transfer. If you pay an extra $30 for RealPlayer you&#8217;ll be able to burn your videos onto DVDs rather than just CDs. Real Guide serves as a link to RealNetworks&#8217; suggestions of videos and also lets you search for more videos. If you visit the My Library section while a video is playing, a miniature view of that video appears in the lower right corner of the screen.</p>
<p>Many sites offer to help you email videos or obtain a video&#8217;s URL for embedding into your own Web site. But these options often appear only after you&#8217;ve watched an entire video, and they don&#8217;t help you save videos onto your PC. RealPlayer 11 strikes a healthy balance: It&#8217;s useful without intruding on your browser. If you stopped downloading videos from the Web to your PC, you wouldn&#8217;t be bothered by its subtle downloading prompts.</p>
<p>RealNetworks will release a second version of this beta before the end of the year, including options for transferring videos to portable players and Mac compatibility. For now, the free download of this first version is smart, simple and fun to use.</p>

<p>When it comes to cool hand-held devices, one always stands out in the crowd: the T-Mobile Sidekick. You may have seen photos of Hollywood stars posing with this device like an accessory, or maybe you&#8217;ve just seen someone using one and you caught yourself wondering what it was.</p>
<p>The Sidekick, built for T-Mobile by Sharp Electronics Corp., doesn&#8217;t look like most common hand-helds, such as the Palm Treo or RIM BlackBerry, which are designed with a screen and keyboard lined up under one another for convenient emailing, phone use and Web browsing. Instead, the Sidekick is meant to be held horizontally and its screen must be twisted out with a dramatic, eye-catching snap in order to use its hidden keyboard underneath. In closed-keyboard position, the device can be held up to your ear vertically to use as a phone.</p>
<p>This week, we tested the latest version of this trendy hand-held, the Sidekick 3. It will officially launch July 10 for $300 with a two-year contract from T-Mobile USA Inc., but is available just for current T-Mobile customers starting today for 12 days.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Testing the Glam Factor</h5>
<p>The last edition of the Sidekick &#8212; Sidekick 2 &#8212; came out almost two years ago, and plenty of improvements have been made in this product category since then, so we were expecting exciting new things from this third edition. We had fun testing the glam factor of the Sidekick 3 this week, using it in clubs, bars and taxicabs with extra screen-twisting snaps just for effect. But while our new gadget earned plenty of approving glances from those in the know, the Sidekick 3 isn&#8217;t all it could be.</p>

<p>Its new design is slightly more tapered than the chunky Sidekick 2, but that&#8217;s not saying much. Compared with the 0.45-inch thickness of the recently introduced Motorola Q, the Sidekick 3&#8217;s 0.86-inch depth isn&#8217;t anything remarkable. The more physically comparable Palm Treo 700p is 0.9 inches deep, but the Sidekick 3&#8217;s overall length outstretches the Treo by almost an inch, making it appear larger overall.</p>
<p>The Sidekick 3&#8217;s screen is generously sized at 2.62 inches diagonal, due in part to its horizontal layout. But the screen&#8217;s resolution is the same as it was on the Sidekick 2: a mushy 240&#215;160 pixels. Compared with screens on other devices that offer greater sharpness and brighter colors, the Sidekick 3&#8217;s screen is a definite downer.</p>
<p>While many of the latest smartphones use high-speed EV-DO data networks for zippy Web browsing, the Sidekick 3 only uses EDGE &#8212; a much slower technology. When we tried to pull up articles about the World Cup, it took us at least 30 or 40 seconds to load each Web site.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">New Trackball</h5>
<p>Four navigation buttons that dot each of the screen&#8217;s corners make it easy to get around to different areas on this device. We especially liked the Sidekick 3&#8217;s trackball, which replaced the Sidekick 2&#8217;s up/down wheel so as to enable scrolling in all four directions.</p>
<p>But we were disappointed and a little surprised that the Sidekick&#8217;s lousy phone function hasn&#8217;t been improved with this version. Because of this device&#8217;s flip-out screen, the keyboard and numeric keypad are hidden unless the screen is out. So you can&#8217;t dial a number with the screen closed. After opening the screen and dialing, you can flip the screen in again and hold the phone up to your ear, but this back-and-forth process is tiring.</p>
<p>You can call people in your Contacts list with the screen closed by selecting an icon on the screen, because you don&#8217;t need access to the keypad for that. But even this process is a bit clumsy compared with the speed-dial functions on standard cellphones.</p>
<p>A few more bells and whistles try to spice up the Sidekick 3. These include Bluetooth, a processor four times as fast as that of the Sidekick 2, and a 1.3-megapixel camera. We found the camera easy to use, and a special button positioned on the top right edge of our Sidekick 3 worked as an easy shortcut to use the camera on quick notice.</p>
<p>We easily emailed photos directly from our photo gallery, using the trackball and navigational buttons to pull up an email format before swinging the screen out to type an email address using the keyboard.</p>
<p>Instant messaging on the Sidekick 3 is well-done, as it was on the Sidekick 2. AOL Instant Messenger, MSN Messenger and Yahoo Messenger come with the device, and we chatted with friends on AIM with ease. The keyboard, though it&#8217;s hard to get to, is generously spread out and comfortable to use after typing messages for awhile.</p>
<p>The Sidekick 3 also has a built-in Mini-SD memory-card slot, but we had to call tech support to learn where it was located. This card slot is inconveniently located behind the back panel of the device, meaning you have to actually remove this panel &#8212; exposing the battery &#8212; in order to use the slot. For users who want to pop their memory cards in and out, this is a real hassle.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Cutesy Extras</h5>
<p>If you&#8217;re desperate for cutesy extras, the Sidekick 3 is loaded with them. The trackball turns different colors to indicate waiting text messages, instant messages, email or voice mail, and a multitude of sounds chime from the device just for the fun of it. Seventeen cartoon icons come loaded onto the device for pairing up with the contacts in your address book if you don&#8217;t want to use an actual photo. Even the low-battery indicator on the Sidekick chimes in a way that sounds cute.</p>
<p>But at the end of the day, this device is still not up to par with its competitors. In social circles where it&#8217;s considered cool, it might be worth buying. And if you have a separate phone, you can use the Sidekick 3 as a data-only device, though that means paying for, and juggling, two gadgets.</p>
<p>But the Sidekick 3&#8217;s poor phone, low-resolution screen and covered keyboard design left us unimpressed, even if it might be trendy. Our advice? Impress your friends with technology that works better for you, the user.</p>

<p>Video on the Web is all the rage now, the subject of an endless stream of articles and speculation that it&#8217;s the next big thing. And there&#8217;s some evidence to back that up. Apple Computer Inc. sold 12 million video clips at $1.99 each from its popular iTunes Music Store in just a few months. Google has made a splash with a similar video download store. According to AccuStream iMedia Research, about 18 billion video streams were online in 2005 and that number is expected to grow by more than 30% in 2006.</p>
<p>But how do you find the video clips you&#8217;d like to see, or download? Normal search engines like Google&#8217;s can sometimes point you to video clips, but they aren&#8217;t optimized for that task.</p>
<p>So, this week, we dived into the world of online videos, looking for the best ways to find clips. We were impressed by how much material is out there &#8212; much of it free. We used about 10 different video searching/hosting sites to find videos related to TV shows, including &#8220;Grey&#8217;s Anatomy,&#8221; Hollywood actors, like Matthew McConaughey, and musicians, like Brad Paisley. We also searched for news videos, ads and amateur videos. We even looked for a famous &#8220;Saturday Night Live&#8221; mock music video, and its imitators.</p>

<p>Our results: AOL Video Search, Yahoo Video Search, and Blinkx TV earned our appreciation because each searches the entire Internet for material, and does a decent job.</p>
<p>Google Video and iTunes also perform video searches, but they search only among the material they host on their own servers, and which they offer for sale, or for free downloading. They don&#8217;t search across the entire Web. Sites like YouTube.com and GoFish.com have sprung up as central download sites for all sorts of video clips, some by amateurs and some by pros. But they, too, search only the material they offer themselves.</p>
<p>The technology for searching the actual spoken words in a video exists, but is in its infancy. So, most video searches are done by looking for words in a video&#8217;s title text, or in descriptions or other information embedded in a video file in the form of &#8220;metadata&#8221; or &#8220;tags&#8221; &#8212; kind of like the embedded title, artist and album information in a music file. Some TV shows stored on the Web also contain closed captioning data, and that can be searched in some cases.</p>
<p>AOL Video Search (<a href="http://www.aol.com/video" rel="external">www.aol.com/video</a>) uses the search engines of two smaller, yet powerful, companies that it owns: <a href="http://Truveo.com" rel="external">Truveo.com</a> and <a href="http://Singingfish.com" rel="external">Singingfish.com</a>. As you use AOL Video Search, your past search topics are saved in a left-hand column and videos can be saved into a special AOL playlist. An adult content filter is used on AOL&#8217;s server, meaning users can&#8217;t turn the filter on or off.</p>
<p>Using AOL, we found and watched the &#8220;Saturday Night Live&#8221; mock music video called &#8220;Lazy Sunday,&#8221; set in New York, and its West Coast response, &#8220;Lazy Monday,&#8221; set in Los Angeles.</p>
<p>Yahoo Video Search (<a href="http://video.search.yahoo.com" rel="external">http://video.search.yahoo.com</a>) can display results in a visually attractive grid of images from each video clip. Unlike AOL, which displays advertisements on its search start and results page, Yahoo doesn&#8217;t show ads on either page &#8212; though ads will display if they&#8217;re linked to videos from outside sources. A SafeSearch filter can be used for blocking adult material as you search videos.</p>
<p>Using Yahoo&#8217;s video search, we turned up clips of a forgettable 1998 appearance Walt made in an East Coast vs. West Coast computer trivia contest held in Boston. Not only was his East Coast team crushed, but they wore puffy colonial shirts while being crushed.</p>
<p>Blinkx TV (<a href="http://www.Blinkx.tv" rel="external">www.Blinkx.tv</a>) uses a simple interface and makes searching easy &#8212; an empty box placed on the left of the screen with a collage of 100 tiny clip images playing on the right. After results are returned, you can adjust a horizontal slider between &#8220;date&#8221; or &#8220;relevance,&#8221; depending on your preference. Our results weren&#8217;t always as accurate with Blinkx as they were with other video-search sites &#8212; one search returned spreadsheets rather than videos &#8212; but we liked how the results page played animated clips of each video in the same window. Blinkx offers a prominent filtering button to hide adult results.</p>
<p>Google Video (<a href="http://video.google.com" rel="external">http://video.google.com</a>), which is still in its beta (or prerelease) version, also offers video searching through free videos &#8212; but allows you to search only through material that Google hosts, or streams from its servers. This site eliminates ads &#8212; including Google&#8217;s word-only ads &#8212; entirely, which is refreshing.</p>
<p>A section in Google Video is a store &#8212; devoted to clips that can be watched only after purchasing or renting them for a day with a &#8220;Day Pass.&#8221; In both cases, videos must be played using Google&#8217;s downloadable Video Player. Google&#8217;s videos range in price depending on content: a clip of a two hour and 25 minute basketball game was $3.95, while an episode of the CBS TV show, &#8220;Survivor,&#8221; cost $1.99. This pricing seemed confusing compared with Apple&#8217;s iTunes, where all videos are $1.99.</p>
<p>We tried Microsoft&#8217;s MSN Video (<a href="http://video.msn.com" rel="external">http://video.msn.com</a>), which is limited only to content that it hosts as of now, but MSN is soon adding the ability to search the whole Web. It used about the same amount of advertisements as AOL Video Search, prior to each clip as well as on the search pages.</p>
<p>Another site, TVEyes Video Search (<a href="http://www.tveyes.com" rel="external">www.tveyes.com</a>), looks only at television and radio broadcasts, but doesn&#8217;t use advertisements.</p>
<p>Two similar sites that depend on user contributions and comments are YouTube (<a href="http://www.youtube.com" rel="external">www.youtube.com</a>) and GoFish (<a href="http://www.gofish.com" rel="external">www.gofish.com</a>). Each Web site searches only within the content it hosts, and that content is uploaded by site members, but anyone can watch the video. GoFish is ad-free and YouTube has just a few ads. One problem we had with GoFish: It hosts, and even touts, adult-oriented video clips featuring some nudity and sexual themes, but doesn&#8217;t sufficiently label them as adult, or group them into an adult category.</p>
<p>This is only a sampling of what&#8217;s out there, and new search sites pop up all the time. So keep searching those videos.</p>
