			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Since the debut of the Palm Pre in June, Palm has talked about the value of the device&#8217;s webOS operating system, which offers fast responsiveness, multitasking, universal search and smart synchronization. These features are accessed using delightful multitouch gestures like swiping with a fingertip. So it makes perfect sense that Palm would want to expand its family of products running this great mobile operating system.</p>

<p>This week, Palm (PALM) introduced a second device with webOS: the Palm Pixi (<a href="http://palm.com/pixi">palm.com/pixi</a>). This is a stripped-down version of the Pre and it costs $100 (after a $50 instant rebate and a $100 mail-in rebate and with a two-year service contract) compared with the $150 Pre. Walmart.com is currently selling the Pixi for even less—$50 (<a href="http://3.ly/oSE">http://3.ly/oSE</a>). Both the Pixi and the Pre run on Sprint&#8217;s (S) network. </p>
<p>I&#8217;ve been testing the Pixi and I&#8217;ve found that the physical differences from the Pre are acceptable variations that most people won&#8217;t mind and may not even detect. These include a smaller, lower-resolution screen, a two-megapixel camera rather than the Pre&#8217;s three-megapixel camera and stationary keyboard instead of one that slides out. The Pixi isn&#8217;t as pebble-shaped as the Pre, but its back cover is rounded to fit comfortably in a hand. And like the Pre, it has an eight-gigabyte storage capacity and it&#8217;s thin and light enough to forget in a jeans pocket or to comfortably hold up to your ear during phone calls.</p>
<p>The Pixi&#8217;s internal changes are much tougher to accept. It lacks Wi-Fi capability and so must rely solely on Sprint&#8217;s 3G network for its connection, which I found to be frustratingly slow at times. This littler phone also runs on a weaker processor than the Pre, a decision that Palm says helped cut costs and make the Pixi small. But this processor&#8217;s speed is slow enough to notice immediately and it robs webOS of its lightning-fast speed. The Pixi&#8217;s progress indicator—a spinning, white circle—appeared on my screen too often.</p>

<p>Like its super-smartphone competitors, including Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) iPhone, Research in Motion&#8217;s (RIMM) newer BlackBerrys and Google&#8217;s (GOOG) Android phones, the Palm Pixi taps into a virtual store from which users can download apps for the device. But Palm&#8217;s App Catalog currently holds fewer than 400 apps and roughly 80 of those aren&#8217;t yet configured for the Pixi. This means that people who buy the $100 Pixi can choose from just around 300 apps for download, compared with the 100,000 apps available for Apple&#8217;s $100 iPhone 3G.</p>
<p>Some apps come preloaded on the Pixi, like Facebook and NFL Mobile Live. I downloaded others, including Pandora radio, Tweed for Twitter and a game called Word Whirl Lite. I logged into my Pandora account and played songs from one of my personalized radio stations while reading through email. A tiny &#8220;P&#8221; icon at the bottom of the Pixi&#8217;s screen notified me that Pandora was running. Other notifiers, like new emails or instant messages, appear at the bottom as well. </p>
<p>If you aren&#8217;t familiar with webOS, it&#8217;s easy to learn. Functions are designed to be more people-centric rather than program-centric. For example, I can look at a name in Contacts and see how I&#8217;m linked to that person—like through Facebook or Google Talk. If I want to start an instant-messaging conversation with that person, I can do so right there rather than opening AIM or Google Talk first to find a person&#8217;s name and then initiate conversation. I logged onto the Pixi with a Google account and the device was smart enough to also synchronize data from my Google Talk, Google Calendar and Gmail contacts.</p>
<p>The Card View, a display of all the programs that are simultaneously running at any given time, can be exposed with a simple, upward finger swipe starting below the screen. To close a program, simply touch it with a finger and toss it upward, as if throwing it away. This is one of the most satisfying gestures in webOS. And it&#8217;s a good thing, too, because Pixi users will need to use it more often than they did with the Pre. Palm suggests running only seven programs at once for the best performance, rather than the 10 you can leave opened on the Pre. </p>
<p>But my Pixi stuttered with just five programs—sometimes fewer—opened. Simple tasks like opening an email or searching for an app in the App Catalog were painfully slow. I received an email containing one digital photo, and the process of opening just the email—not even the photo—took about 10 seconds. When I finally opened the email and its photo, I saved it to my Pixi and tapped on a menu option to upload it to Facebook. But five minutes later, the spinning progress indicator was still on my Pixi&#8217;s screen and I gave up. I tried again and the same thing happened. Finally, on the third try, my photo posted to Facebook. </p>
<p>As was the case for the Palm Pre, the Pixi can be charged by plugging into a normal AC adaptor or by resting it on the Touchstone, a $70 accessory that, with the help of a special back cover that snaps onto the Pixi, magnetically holds this device as it charges. A handful of stylish &#8220;Artist Series&#8221; back covers will sell on Palm.com for $50 each and will ship in early December. </p>
<p>The Pixi&#8217;s 2.6-inch screen has a 320&#215;400 resolution, which is a step down from the Pre&#8217;s 3.1-inch, 320&#215;480-resolution screen. Palm estimates the Pixi&#8217;s battery lasts for five hours of talk time, the same as the Pre, but for 350 hours of standby time—or 50 more hours than the Pre.</p>
<p>The Palm Pixi&#8217;s keyboard is tiny but sufficient. People who are used to BlackBerry or even iPhone keyboards might be irked that the Pixi keyboard doesn&#8217;t have built-in shortcuts like holding down a key to capitalize it or pressing the space bar twice to add a period to the end of a sentence.</p>
<p>Like its predecessor, the Pixi has a designated Gesture Area just beneath its screen where users can swipe a fingertip for quickly navigating through screens, like swiping right-to-left to go back a screen. Unlike the Pre, the Pixi doesn&#8217;t have a silver button below its screen that immediately takes users to Card View, but I didn&#8217;t miss this button. </p>
<p>Though the Palm Pixi is $50 less than the Palm Pre, its downgraded performance doesn&#8217;t make that dollar savings worth it. </p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>If you&#8217;re like me, you like to make the most out of what little free time you have. One way of finding ideas for activities without wasting precious minutes is by searching online. But sometimes the process of browsing the Web can suck you in and waste more time than it saves. </p>
<p>This week, I tested a tool called Goby (pronounced go-be), <a href="http://www.goby.com">www.goby.com</a>, which works as an activity search engine to help you find things to do. It tries to be simple enough so that you can get some ideas and start doing the things you want to do rather than wasting hours in front of the computer. </p>

<p>Goby uses three boxes—What, Where and When—with drop-down menus to find results for your query. It crawls the Web searching what it considers high quality information from 500 sources and employs a part-human, part-machine review process to ensure first-rate results. Goby searches through over 200 categories, including live music, art exhibits, outdoor festivals, spas, bed-and-breakfasts and restaurants.</p>
<p>Using Goby was an emotional roller coaster. With very little effort I found things in Washington, D.C., that I&#8217;ve never heard of in the seven-plus years I&#8217;ve lived here, including tea with Martha Washington and a stuffed Civil War hero horse on display at the Smithsonian. But I also found inaccurate Goby results like an activity in Washington state rather than Washington, D.C., or photos that were supposed to represent a tennis center but instead showed a celebrity&#8217;s child with the same name. And sometimes the same results were listed four times in a row.</p>
<p>Goby&#8217;s results took a serious nose dive when I looked outside the city in my hometown of Allentown, Pa. I searched for all performing arts and theater near Allentown, an area that I know first-hand has plenty to offer in the way of music, theater and dance. Goby returned two results—one for the Nutcracker in December and another for a Shakespeare play that was put on last July. A quick check of my hometown newspaper&#8217;s Web site showed hundreds of performances to attend in the coming months.</p>

<p>Goby.com has been available to the public for only a few weeks and it is still working out some kinks. The more people use it, the more accurate its results will become—or at least that&#8217;s what its founders hope will happen. When Goby&#8217;s search results are accurate, they include the kinds of thing locals would want to see or do in their own hometown, and that&#8217;s no small feat. But people won&#8217;t have a lot of patience for some of the erroneous results that now show up in Goby. Also, this activity search engine currently lacks features like the ability to build and save itineraries, make one-click ticket purchases or book reservations.</p>
<p>Though Goby&#8217;s query boxes ask users to enter What, Where and When, the When is always an optional specification, and people can enter either What or Where if they only know one of these factors. General suggestions of categories also are made in Goby&#8217;s drop-down menus. The What box opens five categories: things to do, food and drink, events, places to stay and, right now, fall fun; many of these open several, more-specified subcategories. For example, I started a search and followed a four-part trail: things to do, outdoor recreation, horseback riding and horseback riding trails—all within the same drop-down menu. </p>
<p>If you know what you want to do but not where you want to do it, the drop-down arrow in the Where box opens an interactive map of the U.S. Users can pan around the entire country, zooming in on specific areas or small towns. I even zoomed in on Minot, N.D. (population 35,000) and found out about an event taking place at the Northwest Arts Center on Nov. 2. </p>
<p>This map comes in handy if you know the general geographic area where you would like to spend time, but don&#8217;t know the area&#8217;s name. </p>
<p>Lists of query results are deliberately designed to show more than just Web links, like what Google (GOOG) often displays. Suggested activities are displayed in a numbered list on the left side of the screen, and a map with corresponding numbers is displayed on the right, moving along with your cursor as you scroll on the page. A blue flashlight tool on the map can be dragged anywhere to pinpoint exactly where you want to find activities, and after you drop the flashlight on a spot, the left-hand list dynamically changes to correspond with that map view.</p>
<p>A &#8220;More Info&#8221; tab shows vital information for each query result like a description, time, address and Web site for the activity. If you are looking at lodging, you can adjust a price scale to limit or expand results for rooms that cost a certain amount per night. Lists of results can be sorted according to category: Art events can be sorted by relevance, distance, date or name; bed-and-breakfasts also can be sorted by price. </p>
<p>Photos representing these activities are pulled in from source sites like bedandbreakfast.com as well as from Google and Flickr. While these images can provide a quick glimpse of something while saving users from navigating to another Web page, some of the results weren&#8217;t accurate. For example, when I searched for tennis in Washington, D.C., a tennis program that I didn&#8217;t know about called &#8220;Tennis at Shiloh&#8221; was listed in results. But four out of six photos showed images of Shiloh, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie&#8217;s child of the same name. I called the organization to confirm that it is indeed a real program, but without calling, I would have seen the photos, doubted the quality of the place and looked for another spot to play tennis.</p>
<p>A &#8220;What&#8217;s Nearby&#8221; function is designed to help people expand their activity searches. It takes the address of a selected activity and suggests other things nearby like places to go for dinner or where to listen to live music. </p>
<p>Unfortunately, Goby doesn&#8217;t let you build an itinerary. So if you find a few possible activities for a weekend trip to Williamsburg, Va., and then use &#8220;What&#8217;s Nearby&#8221; to find a pub for lunch, a restaurant for dinner and a bed-and-breakfast for the night, you can&#8217;t save all of these findings using Goby. The company says it plans to incorporate these features in the near future.</p>
<p>Goby would be incredibly helpful if it had a mobile app. This Sunday when I was across town from my house and had an unexpected block of free time, I could have used Goby to find a nearby art exhibit or a spot for apple picking. Goby says it is working on an iPhone app, which it expects to release later this year. </p>
<p>If you get lucky with Goby, you&#8217;ll find activities that let you do as its name says: Go, be and enjoy your surrounding area. But the site&#8217;s results need to be much more accurate for me to start relying on it full time.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>If your company makes printers but general trends are leaning toward using less paper and moving digital content to e-readers and smartphones, what can you do? Hewlett-Packard&#8217;s solution is to find new ways to get people to print more.</p>
<p>The $399 H-P Photosmart Premium All-in-One with Touch-Smart Web (<a href="http://hp.com/go/touchprinting">hp.com/go/touchprinting</a>) will print, copy, fax and scan like other all-in-ones. But it connects to the Internet using built-in Wi-Fi and displays customized Web applications on its 4.33-inch touch screen. These apps are designed to promote printing in any way possible, including photos from Snapfish, Sudoku puzzles, movie tickets from Fandango, coupons, maps from Google (GOOG) Maps, coloring-book pages and news articles—all without using a computer.</p>

<p>The print apps are part of the new H-P App Studio, H-P&#8217;s (HPQ) answer to the flurry of app stores—Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) App Store, RIM&#8217;s (RIMM) BlackBerry World, Android Marketplace, Palm&#8217;s (PALM) App Catalog and Microsoft&#8217;s (MSFT) Zune Marketplace—that ease the process of downloading onto mobile devices. A &#8220;Get More&#8221; icon on the printer&#8217;s touch screen presents descriptions of available apps. There are currently 15 available for download onto your printer, and more will be added in coming months.</p>

The Photosmart All-in-One connects to Web apps that promote printing of everything from photos to tickets.</div>
<p>This printer is designed to work with more than just the H-P App Studio. A downloadable tool called the H-P Photo Print Gadget installs on computers running Windows 7 or Vista (not Windows XP) so people can drag and drop photos to it for printing. PlayStation 3 owners can capture and print screen shots as evidence of their game success. And a long-available free app in Apple&#8217;s App Store called H-P iPrint Photo lets iPhone and iPod Touch owners send photos to this and other H-P printers.</p>
<p>The goal of this product is obviously to get people to print more, and in my case, it worked. I used more paper in a week of testing the Photosmart Premium All-in-One than I normally print out in three weeks at my office. The printer quickly churned out dual-sided pages with photos in rich colors.</p>
<p>But the concept of adding apps to a printer while also asking people to become more paper-reliant seems like one step forward, two steps back. I could see this concept working on a thin, stylish printer that could fit neatly on an entryway table, making it a cinch for people to grab maps, movie tickets and coupons on their way out the door. But this is a large, all-in-one machine that takes up some serious space.</p>
<p>And if this all-in-one is truly meant to work without a PC, it should do a better job of letting you interact with pages, like zooming in on a document to preview before printing. In the current document preview screen, the text is too small to read. Likewise, the Google Calendar app printed a nice one-page calendar month view, but I couldn&#8217;t zoom in on the print preview to see specific appointments. This forced me to print the page to see its contents, using more ink and more paper.</p>
<p>Other apps are shamelessly begging users to press Print. A Toys and Crafts app made by H-P itself includes paper dolls with cut-out clothes that can be snipped and folded to stay on the doll&#8217;s form. For the doll&#8217;s face, kids are encouraged to use a photo of themselves that–surprise, surprise—they can print using their all-in-one.</p>
<p><a href="HTTP://Coupons.com">Coupons.com</a> supplies two apps—one for coupons and one for recipes. I browsed through 87 product coupons in my ZIP Code and marked those that I wanted to print using a small check-box on the touch screen. Pressing &#8220;Print&#8221; compiled three coupons on one piece of paper. Recipes from Coupons.com printed with brightly colored photos of the end result; I&#8217;m looking forward to following one for Curried Chicken Salad.</p>
<p>For now, the Google Maps app isn&#8217;t ready for prime time: It prints only maps, not directions. H-P says it&#8217;s planning to add directions but wouldn&#8217;t say when. And a Nickelodeon app couldn&#8217;t load on my printer. Some apps took from 10 to 30 seconds to load—precious time when you&#8217;re running out the door.</p>
<p>One of the smartest apps, Tabbloid, lets people assemble a personalized tabloid-style print-out of news from a variety of sources like Daily Kos for politics and FanHouse for sports. But this assembling must be done on a computer, thus negating this printer&#8217;s no-PC approach. I chose from a list of 10 topics including automotive, celebrity, politics and sports and created a printable Tabbloid that, with one click, was sent wirelessly to the corresponding app on my printer. I printed it out to read during my commute. </p>
<p>I liked using the Photosmart Premium All-in-One&#8217;s generous screen for touch gestures like flicking left-to-right through a carousel of icons that represent apps. An on-screen keyboard appeared when I had to type in passwords for things like my Snapfish account.</p>
<p>H-P says it will introduce other products with TouchSmart Web capability and access to the HP App Studio, and one hopes these products will include low-end printers rather than expensive all-in-ones. The apps on the H-P Photosmart Premium All-in-One with TouchSmart Web are user-friendly, but I&#8217;m not convinced they&#8217;ll incite people to print more things more often.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Makeovers are always fun to watch. Someone swoops in on an unsuspecting fashion “don’t,” improves him or her with a new hairstyle, makeup and wardrobe, and presents the finished product to overjoyed friends and family.</p>
<p>Last week, Yahoo (YHOO) unveiled the results of its latest makeover: the revamped home page. Carol Bartz, the company’s relatively new CEO, has said that Yahoo’s home page needed just such  a makeover. After not changing significantly since 2006, the home page fits the role of a fashion don’t. And consumers, like family and friend observing the aftermath of a makeover, will either be overjoyed or nonplussed by the finished product.</p>

<p>I’ve been using this new home page for over a week now and I can report that Yahoo followed one of the most important makeover rules by doing more with less. Gone is the busy screen saturated with advertisements and clutter. The new home page is clean and easier to absorb.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Favorite ‘Apps’</h5>
<p>Yahoo’s home-page makeover goes beyond surface improvements. Its most useful feature is a list called My Favorites, which contains a variety of Web sites from within and outside of Yahoo. When your cursor hovers over one of these entries, which Yahoo calls “apps,” a pane opens with a preview of content from that site. This turns your Yahoo home page into an aggregator of information, bringing glimpses of information to you in one place so you don’t have to waste time navigating to other sites.</p>
<p>But if a greater number of these apps were more robust, you would be able to do more right within the hover pane, like watch videos or play a game. Currently, the hover preview pane only lets you see content, update social-network statuses and enter search terms, the results of which are shown on a new Web page.</p>

<p>This makeover comes at an interesting time in the world of online news aggregation. Competitors like Google (GOOG) and Microsoft (MSFT) incorporate data from all over the Web into iGoogle.com and MSN.com, respectively. And the concept of the home page as a starting point isn’t as popular as it once was: Many people now start browsing the Web by first clicking on a link in an email or in one of many social-networking sites, like Twitter.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Traffic Driver</h5>
<p>Of course, Yahoo plans to use this redesigned home page to drive traffic to the company’s own sites like Shine, Answers, Health and OMG (a celebrity gossip site). These Yahoo sites make up half of the 65 apps designed especially for My Favorites. Yahoo says that its apps for other sites, including WSJ.com, were made by Yahoo and the outside company running the Web site. An ad runs on the hover preview page of each app and the revenue for this ad goes to Yahoo, not the content provider.</p>
<p>Yahoo will use your list of My Favorites apps to learn about what sites you use so as to target ads at users. This proved true for most of the ads I saw on my home page, but strangely, the AllThingsD.com app displayed ads for Mars chocolate and Del Monte fruit snacks rather than technology products. </p>
<h5 class="subhed">Module Thinking</h5>
<p>My Favorites is fixed on the far left of the Yahoo home page and a large search box sits prominently at the top of the home screen. </p>
<p>The top middle section of the screen shows a carousel of images and current news that Yahoo calls the Today Module; below this is the News Module, which houses tabs labeled News, World, Local, and Finance. The Local and Finance tabs can be customized by entering a ZIP Code and stock tickers, respectively. The Today and News Modules can switch positions if you click on a small arrow.</p>
<p>The revamped home page will serve as a starting point for the Yahoo Application Platform, or YAP. Sometime around late September, Yahoo will open its YAP (no pun intended) to software developers so they can make all kinds of apps with a variety of functions for the home page, not just apps that are tied to Web sites.</p>
<p>You can customize the home page for style or content changes if you sign on using a user ID and password. Changes should appear the next time you log in. But this didn’t work as well as it should. I set my page to display in a tangerine color, one of six colors offered for customizing the page, but the home page wasn’t tangerine-colored the next time I logged in.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Some Problems</h5>
<p>I had trouble logging into my Gmail account using a special Gmail app, but this and the color problem were fixed by the time this column went to press.</p>
<p>Some apps didn’t work at all, like the Facebook app, which couldn’t connect to my Facebook account. Yahoo said the problem should be fixed this week.</p>
<p>The home page seemed to have a longer memory when it came to the list of My Favorites. I edited my list, adding more pre-made apps and creating some of my own using a built-in tool that lets you enter a Web site. Yahoo has preloaded icons for some popular Web sites such as cnn.com; otherwise, it will use a generic star.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Permanent Apps</h5>
<p>Two apps are permanent fixtures at the top of the My Favorites list: One shows a list of all Yahoo sites and the other shows Yahoo Mail. Everything else can be deleted, added and moved around in the list. One of my favorite apps was for Epicurious.com, the food and recipe site. When I hovered over the Epicurious app, images of food with recipe names appeared in the hover preview pane. One click on an image sent me to the Web site for the full version of the recipe.</p>
<p>After adding many of my own apps to My Favorites, I wished Yahoo had a one-click tool for converting my browser bookmarks into apps. Yahoo says this is something it hopes to introduce in the future.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Mobile Rollout</h5>
<p>This week, Yahoo started rolling out a mobile Web site made to run on the iPhone’s Safari browser that coordinates with the more robust version of the home page. I used this Yahoo home page on the iPhone and liked that it immediately pulled up the My Favorites list I had carefully constructed on my computer. Similar offerings will soon be available for other mobile devices.</p>
<p>The new Yahoo home page is a refreshing way of bringing content to you rather than you chasing around the Web looking for it. The My Favorites apps need a little more power to be truly useful and to encourage people to use the Yahoo home page every day, but Yahoo hopes to solve some of that problem in a couple of months when it opens the site to developers.</p>

		<description><![CDATA[A review of T-Mobile myTouch 3G with Google, the second “Google phone” to be released.]]></description>
			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>As the saying goes, you never get a second chance to make a first impression. But it never hurts to try. This week, I tested the T-Mobile myTouch 3G with Google (GOOG), which is the company’s second chance at introducing a “Google phone” to the masses.</p>
<p>Google’s first device, called the T-Mobile G1, came out in October and was less than a sensation. The phone had a touch screen and a handy slide-out physical keyboard, but it was bulky and unattractive. It came with just one gigabyte of memory and lacked important features like compatibility with Microsoft Exchange for use with work email. Its app store, called the Android Market, offered only about 50 applications. The G1 launched with surprisingly few accessories.</p>

<p>The $200 (with two-year contract) T-Mobile myTouch 3G (t-mobilemytouch.com) available Aug. 5, has fixed many of these problems. Its new design uses an on-screen keyboard, which gives it a thinner, more stylish build that feels great in the hand. It now comes with four gigabytes of memory, works with Microsoft Exchange and can record and play back video footage. The Android Market has increased its number of apps to about 6,300, and the myTouch will hit stores with accessories like designer shells and docking stations. Its combined voice and data plans are at least $25 less per month than what AT&#038;T’s (T) plans cost for users of Apple’s competing iPhone.</p>
<p>But while using it, I couldn’t help thinking that the myTouch felt less like a new device and more like what the G1 should have been in the first place.</p>
<p>The myTouch, which is built by HTC of Taiwan, runs on an improved version of Google’s operating system, that performs tasks faster has a more streamlined look and supports stereo Bluetooth connections. But it carries on many traits of its predecessor. It still synchronizes over the air with Google account information including email, calendar and contacts. Swiping a finger to the left or right on the myTouch’s home screen will still open other screens, with space for icons representing apps. And its handy window-shade-like Notifications menu can still be pulled down onto the screen at any time to show a list of new messages.</p>
<p>The most dramatic difference on the myTouch is its on-screen keyboard, which may frustrate some people who liked the G1 for its because it had a physical keyboard and a touch screen. Like on Apple’s (AAPL) iPhone, the myTouch keyboard corrects words as you type, recognizing you’ll make more mistakes on it than you would on a physical keyboard. The keyboard suggests words in a horizontal bar that appears above the keyboard and below the text area. You need only type “Washi” and the word “Washington” appears in this bar for you to select. These shortcuts speed up the otherwise frustrating process of on-screen typing.</p>
<p>Unlike on the iPhone, the myTouch keyboard’s keys don’t get larger as your finger hovers over them so as to help you touch the right key. Nor does a word become magnified when you’re trying to place the cursor at a certain spot. The myTouch’s trackball can be used to pinpoint a specific letter but I usually forgot all about the trackball, opting to use the responsive touch screen for navigation.</p>
<p>T-Mobile offers much less expensive monthly plans for the myTouch than AT&#038;T offers for the iPhone. The cheapest voice and data plan from T-Mobile costs $55 compared with AT&#038;T’s $70. Unlimited data and messaging plus minimum voice plans total $65 for T-Mobile and $90 for AT&#038;T. And AT&#038;T’s messaging is currently limited to text, while T-Mobile messaging includes text, picture and video.</p>
<p>On the other hand, T-Mobile offers 3G coverage in far fewer cities than AT&#038;T. The myTouch comes with only a fourth of the built-in memory of the same-priced the 3GS iPhone, and half the memory of the 3G iPhone model, which is costs half the price. And myTouch offers only about a tenth of the apps the iPhone offers, and has a smaller screen.</p>

<p>T-Mobile wants myTouch users to understand apps and download them, starting with the AppPack: a package of eight to 10 apps that T-Mobile will send to myTouch customers via an SMS with a link. Customers can peruse this list of apps and download just the ones they choose. While some people may not appreciate receiving apps suggestions, it could also introduce apps to people who didn’t know how they worked.</p>
<p>The Android Market, where all apps for Google’s phones can be found and purchased,still isn’t as well organized as it should be. It separates games from other applications and organizes them by popularity and date, but doesn’t separate those that are free and those that must be bought. I downloaded several free apps including WordGame, Facebook, Twitter, Sketch-a-Etch and Sherpa. But I was especially irked by the way some of the apps I downloaded kept trying to get me to download additional apps every time I opened them. The Twitter app, which was listed as one of the most popular, displayed prompts to download browsers and RSS readers—even six days after I first used the app. An on-screen message gave me the option to “Ignore Forever,” but this apparently didn’t include prompts to download other programs. Any user would be confused and irritated by these unsolicited messages. Google said that was what the developer chose to do—a major downside to the Android’s open model.</p>
<p>The myTouch’s 3.2-megapixel camera and video camera worked well and started up quickly. An icon labeled Gallery neatly holds still images and videos. And the myTouch has simple ways to upload photos to Picasa or videos to YouTube.</p>
<p>A built-in tool for Google Web searches using voice commands worked remarkably well, even when I tried to trip it up by saying four words at once. It didn’t recognize my last name, but I’ll let it off the hook since it’s spelled differently than it sounds.</p>
<p>The T-Mobile myTouch 3G costs $50 more than the G1, but its extra features are worthwhile. Be ready for a frustrating first-time experience with the on-screen keyboard and try to read user comments in the Android Market to figure out which apps prompt you to download additional programs. </p>
<p>The myTouch is what we expected from Google the first time around. Time will tell if people are ready to give it a second chance.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Every once in a while I watch an online video that&#8217;s good enough to send to a friend, share on Twitter and Facebook or save its URL so I can watch it again later. The final piece of the puzzle would be moving the video onto a mobile device to have it with me wherever I went.</p>
<p>Enter RealPlayer SP beta (<a href="http://realplayer.com">realplayer.com</a>), the latest in RealNetworks Inc.&#8217;s (RNWK) long line of media players that the company has churned out since 1995. RealPlayer SP—the SP stands for social and portable—is a free download that, once installed, grabs videos from the Web, converts them to the right format and transfers them to over a dozen portable devices. While other software programs perform two or just one of these tasks, the RealPlayer SP&#8217;s trio of talent makes it like a digital Swiss army knife.</p>

<p>After using the RealPlayer for moving several videos of all kinds to an iPhone, BlackBerry Curve 8900 and Palm Pre, I felt like I had more control over my portable devices and the media they held. And the freedom of knowing that this player is compatible with almost anything—including Apple (AAPL) and Palm (PALM) devices, Research in Motion&#8217;s (RIMM) BlackBerrys, T-Mobile&#8217;s G1 and Sidekick, Nokia&#8217;s (NOK) N97 and certain basic cellphones—is a major plus.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Behavior Problem</h5>
<p>My biggest problem with using the RealPlayer SP has to do with my own behavior. Most of the videos I watch online and share with friends are less than five minutes long. This means that grabbing, converting and transferring videos to a portable device using the RealPlayer SP—albeit a relatively quick process—could easily take more time than the length of the video, itself. And many of the longer videos that I would want to move to a BlackBerry or iPhone are copyright-protected and thus can&#8217;t be downloaded by the RealPlayer SP.</p>
<p>Another factor is that more devices now have their own built-in app stores for downloading content to the device, without plugging into a computer for transfers like with the RealPlayer SP. The iPod touch, for example, can now download movies, music videos and TV shows over Wi-Fi thanks to a recent $10 software upgrade.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Mac Version Coming Soon</h5>
<p>The RealPlayer SP works only on Windows PCs right now; a Mac version is due out by the end of this year. Likewise, it doesn&#8217;t work on Apple&#8217;s Safari browser but does work on Firefox, Internet Explorer and Google&#8217;s (GOOG) Chrome browser; I used all three with success.</p>
<p>If you&#8217;re not interested in using the RealPlayer SP for transferring videos to portable devices, you can still use it for downloading videos, saving them onto your computer and sharing them with friends via Twitter, Facebook or email. Tiny icons representing each of these sharing options appear in-line beside freshly downloaded videos. I shared videos of last week&#8217;s Congressional Luau at the White House via Facebook and Twitter, but the icon to share videos via Twitter doesn&#8217;t automatically shrink URLs to fit into a tweet. I shrunk the URLs myself, but this took an extra step<sup>1</sup>.</p>
<p>And though I&#8217;ve mostly focused on the RealPlayer SP&#8217;s ability to grab, convert and transfer (RealNetworks calls these tools the Downloader feature in the player), it also works as its own media player or helps you discover new content.</p>

<p>A premium version called RealPlayer Plus SP is available for $40. Premium features include DVD burning, DVD playback (if your computer can&#8217;t play DVDs) and video conversion to a special format called h.264—though the free version performs these conversions for videos being moved to Apple devices.</p>
<p>I jumped around the Web visiting sites and playing videos, which prompted the RealPlayer SP to display a small &#8220;Download This Video&#8221; message above videos that aren&#8217;t copyright-protected. Downloading videos worked on most sites, including <a href="http://AllThingsD.com">AllThingsD.com</a>, <a href="http://Slate.com">Slate</a>, <a href="http://YouTube.com">YouTube</a>, Salon and CNET. As expected, I wasn&#8217;t so lucky with videos from the New York Times, BBC and Hulu, which hosts loads of TV shows and music videos. That&#8217;s because videos from these sites were copyright-protected and didn&#8217;t allow for downloading.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">A Glitch</h5>
<p>In one instance with a <a href="http://WSJ.com">WSJ.com </a>video, only the short ad that played before the video was downloaded, even though the download prompt indicated that the WSJ video was obtainable using RealPlayer SP. RealNetworks says this is a glitch it knows about and plans to correct.</p>
<p>The RealPlayer SP&#8217;s ability to download videos and transfer them to devices, rather than just copying them onto computers, forced me to be choosier about the videos that I downloaded due to the limited memory of the devices. Because of this, I wished the RealPlayer SP Downloader had a better built-in way to discover downloadable content. Currently, a link to something called the RealGuide pulls up suggestions, but I had a hard time finding clips there that I wanted to download. RealNetworks says it plans to improve the video-discovery process in the future, including adding things like YouTube keyword searches built right into the Downloader.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">The Downloader Window</h5>
<p>When I did find videos I liked, I clicked on the prompt to download the clip, found the clip in a tiny Downloader window, and chose to move the clip to a device (there&#8217;s a list of all available devices) or share it via Twitter, Facebook or email. Transfer times depend on the length of the video.</p>
<p>RealNetworks provides simple instructions on making sure your device is set to transfer when plugged in. For example, BlackBerrys must be set to mass-storage mode, Palm Pres should be set to USB mode and Apple devices synchronize with the iTunes library, where RealPlayer&#8217;s converted videos are sent for transferring to iPhones and iPods.</p>
<p>RealPlayer SP can be a real help when it comes to putting the content that you want on your portable device. Its ability to assist from start to finish—finding videos, converting and transferring them—saves time and avoids confusion. To succeed, RealPlayer SP needs to do a better job of helping people find worthwhile videos to transfer, or they&#8217;ll stop using it after just a few tries.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>It’s hard to maintain a monogamous relationship with one photo-sharing Web site. You will sign up with a service and use it as your primary online repository for a while. You may even familiarize friends and family with that service so they expect to see your name associated with it in emails. But before long, other sites with flashier features will entice you to start spending time with them while you continue to maintain your accounts on the old site so you don’t lose your digital memories. Can’t they all just get along in one place?  </p>
<p>This week, I tested <a href="http://www.thisMoment.com">thisMoment.com</a>—a content-sharing Web site that doesn’t mind if you use multiple sharing sites. It acknowledges your accounts on other sites and the fact that you have probably loaded a bunch of photos or videos onto those sites. It even recognizes that you likely still want to remain connected to those services. In fact, thisMoment is made better by your relationships with these other sites. And the service also makes it easy to incorporate into your account material created by others—even strangers.</p>

<p>Anyone can use thisMoment.com the old-fashioned way, by uploading personal content and building “moments” (collections of related content) to share with friends. But thanks to thisMoment’s ties to other sharing sites, users may opt to add others’ publicly shared materials like videos, photos and articles to a moment, making it richer and more interesting. This content can come from sources like Flickr, Picasa, YouTube, Facebook—even Life Magazine photos and MTV videos can be interspersed throughout a moment. The Moment Maker tool quickly scans sites for relevant content to add to the moment.</p>
<p>This week, the service introduced an iPhone app for making moments on the go and a Facebook app for creating moments within Facebook. I tried both, in addition to using the thisMoment.com site, and found that resulting moments looked like they took a lot more time and effort to make than they actually did. </p>
<p>ThisMoment’s secret sauce is in its elegant displays. It takes all sorts of content—text, photos, videos—from various sources and meshes it into a handsome slideshow that flows from one visual to the next. Black backgrounds dramatically frame photos and videos, and captions stand out in brightly colored text. Maps from Google (GOOG) pinpoint exactly where the moment took place and a list names other people who were in the moment.</p>
<p>And when you’re all done creating your moment, thisMoment doesn’t mind sharing your final project with others using still more social-networking tools like Twitter, Facebook and some 45 Web publishing sites—if your privacy settings are set for sharing.</p>
<p>For some people, the idea of integrating other online content into their personal moments could be a turn-off. I wasn’t initially sure I would want someone else’s content mixed in with photos and videos I took, or vice versa. And I still wish thisMoment provided a clearer way of differentiating between someone’s personal content and that which was pulled from the Web. (Currently, small print below each item tells where it came from.) </p>
<p>But there’s so much content online that it makes sense to tap these resources. And users can opt to make moments without external content. </p>

<p>Rather than just slapping photos on to a Web site where people can see them, thisMoment asks its users to check off descriptive words—or enter their own—to explain how the moment made them feel. Though I originally scoffed at these add-your-own emotions, I later grew to like them when I looked back at my moments and those created by other people. They give these online creations a personal touch that isn’t conveyed in other photo-sharing software programs or Web sites. </p>
<p>Another thisMoment differentiator is its sense of time. You can create moments for things that happen in the past, present or future, like an upcoming wedding or birth, and a timeline at the top of the Web site shows where these moments fit in, according to their dates. If you share a moment with someone who is labeled as being in that moment, she can “seize” the moment, adding it to her own timeline. ThisMoment also encourages you to rate your moments on a scale of small to big according to how much they matter to you, though I often forgot to do this, and to label your moments so they can be organized into different categories.</p>
<p>I soon got the hang of how to use thisMoment to supplement my moments when I didn’t have enough content to create something worth sharing. When I attended a folk rock concert at the Embassy of the Czech Republic here in Washington, D.C., I only captured a few so-so photographs and wouldn’t have otherwise shared any visual memories from the evening with friends. But I used the Moment Maker to troll the Web for content related to Czechomor, the band I saw, and found live concert videos, as well as professional photographs, an online biography of the band and a link to where the group’s album was sold on Amazon.com (AMZN). I used this content and one of my own photos, and made a simple moment in a few minutes. (<a href="http://www.thismoment.com/moment/view/31474/czech-embassy-concert">Check out my moment</a>.)  </p>
<p>Likewise, friends of mine recently hosted a murder-mystery dinner, but we were so busy staying in character that we took only one photo of the entire evening. I used that photo of me and my costumed friends as the inspiration for creating a moment filled with photos and videos of murder-mystery dinners from all over. This content came from sites like Photobucket, Picasa, Flickr and YouTube, and I laughed at the number of people who wore stick-on moustaches in these photos.</p>
<p>ThisMoment allows anyone with whom you share a moment to see that moment without signing up for the service. If that person is included in the moment, meaning the creator labeled him or her as a person who participated in the moment, then that person can add his or her own content to the moment—as long as that person signs up as a member of the site. </p>
<p>A variety of privacy options let you restrict who can see your moments—just you, friends, family, people in the moment or everyone. If a moment is set so everyone can see it, they can also use your content in their moments. </p>
<p>You may not always want to use thisMoment to incorporate content from other services and Web sites. But even without outside influences, this service’s stunning visual displays will give your moments a polished look that makes you proud to share. </p>

But many people don&#8217;t know what to do with these Webcams or how to use them for videoconferencing with other people. Some don&#8217;t even realize their computers have these tiny videocameras.</p>

<p>This week, I tested a new videoconferencing-software program designed to help these people. It&#8217;s made especially for non-techies who simply want to use their Webcams to see someone while they&#8217;re talking to them. These people don&#8217;t want to conference several people into a call. And they especially don&#8217;t want to have to sign up for a confusing, intimidating videoconferencing service.</p>
<p>I used Logitech Vid by downloading it from <a href="http://www.logitech.com/vid">www.logitech.com/vid</a>. This program comes from Logitech Inc. and makes use of technology from SightSpeed, the videoconferencing-software company that Logitech acquired last fall. Vid works with Macs and Windows PCs that have built-in Webcams or those that use Webcams that plug into a computer&#8217;s USB port; it can even work if only one person has a Webcam so the person without one still sees video and hears audio from the other person.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Expiration Date for Some</h5>
<p>If this was a free download for all, Logitech Vid would be a slam dunk for the consumer. But as of now, it is free only for people who use Logitech Webcams or the people they invite, and for people who are registered on SightSpeed or Dell Video Chat, Dell&#8217;s version of the SightSpeed service, regardless of their Webcam brand.</p>
<p>For everyone else, the software expires after 30 days, with no option to pay for continued use. This means Logitech misses out on the growing number of people whose laptops and desktops have built-in Webcams, but who don&#8217;t want to buy a Logitech camera just to use Vid (and shouldn&#8217;t have to). Logitech says it intends to add a payment plan for Vid.</p>
<p>I tested Vid with my parents, who recently bought a netbook for the kitchen but &#8212; before this column &#8212; didn&#8217;t quite know how to use its Webcam. I also tried it with tech-savvy friends who have video-chatted with me on programs like Skype, Apple&#8217;s iChat and Google Chat. Everyone had the same reaction: They liked Logitech Vid&#8217;s refreshingly clean interface and simple setup. My Mom appreciated Vid&#8217;s easy instructions, which are written in plain terms that anyone can understand.</p>
<p>Vid worked while I was video-chatting from one Mac to another; from a Mac to a Windows PC and vice versa; and from one Windows PC to another.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Invitations to Chat</h5>
<p>I ran into trouble one night when Vid invitations that I sent to friends and family didn&#8217;t go through until after several attempts. Logitech says Vid was undergoing some behind-the-scenes server maintenance, which caused the glitches. (People who have trouble sending invitations like I did can alternatively direct friends to Logitech&#8217;s Web site to download the software.) And Vid didn&#8217;t work properly when I tried using it on my company-issued PC, which runs on a corporate network protected by firewalls. Logitech says Vid is targeted for consumer use, and not for sophisticated corporate environments.</p>

<p>People who are used to more advanced videoconferencing programs may find Vid unsatisfying. It doesn&#8217;t let friends instant message or share photos with one another, nor does it pull in buddy lists from outside videoconferencing programs. Vid isn&#8217;t designed to record conversations, host multiparty calls or take still photos during chats. Like other videoconferencing programs, slow Internet connections can occasionally cause video and audio to stutter.</p>
<p>But for simple video chats, Vid was a pleasure to use. If not for its 30-day expiration, I would definitely see myself chatting with my parents through this program on a regular basis. I used it to hold up three colors of dresses for my Mom so she could help me decide whether tea rose, azalea or peppermint was the best shade for my sister&#8217;s wedding (we&#8217;re leaning toward tea rose). My Dad and I had a face-to-face talk about my latest job news, and I saw a New Orleans friend and her dog, Boudreaux, appear on my computer screen almost as if they were in my house.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Smile for the Camera</h5>
<p>Vid users invite others to chat by entering the other person&#8217;s email address. For invitees to accept an invitation, they must download the Vid software, which could be a deterrent for some. Those who do download the software and start their own Vid accounts (by just entering an email and password) appear to the original inviter in a carousel-like display of their contacts&#8217; photographed faces.</p>
<p>These images are taken by the Webcam when someone sets up a Vid account, rather than allowing one to select his or her own photo from elsewhere on the computer. This is one example of Vid&#8217;s nod to simplicity and fewer choices. Likewise, the carousel of friends is organized in left-to-right alphabetical order showing those who are online followed by those offline. A simple status line below each person&#8217;s face identifies them as Unavailable, Available or Busy (already in a videoconference).</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Clicking on a Pic</h5>
<p>I called someone by clicking on their photo. The video-chat screen has four buttons that change its size, hide a small-image view of yourself, pause your video feed or end the conversation.</p>
<p>In a few instances, I heard a steady, high-pitched chirp and so did the person on the call with me. And we occasionally heard the echo of our own voices. Logitech said this sometimes happens when both users have open-air microphones and speakers turned up at the same time. Turning the speakers down usually solves the problem.</p>
<p>By August, all of Logitech&#8217;s standalone Webcams will come loaded with Vid software that starts up when the Webcam is plugged in. Now, the software is only downloadable from the Web.</p>
<p>Logitech Vid isn&#8217;t fancy, but it works well and presents its users with a satisfying experience so they can concentrate on enjoying their conversations. But it is a shame that Logitech doesn&#8217;t offer a payment plan for people who don&#8217;t use Logitech Webcams. If it did, Vid could help many people appreciate the Webcams they might never have otherwise used.</p>

Even if you&#8217;re in the habit of using another search engine like Yahoo to look up something online, you probably say you &#8220;Googled&#8221; it because everyone knows what you mean. Microsoft Corp. is hoping you&#8217;ll change your habits and start &#8220;Binging&#8221; for that which you once Googled.</p>

<p>Last week, Microsoft announced Bing as the name of its new search engine. The company describes Bing as delivering more answers to your search queries directly on the search-results page, so you don&#8217;t have to keep hunting around for what you want to find. And, like Google, Bing can be used as a verb.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve been using Bing for more than two weeks now, and this search engine really did retrieve on-target, useful information on the first try. But what I like best about it is that it does so in a user-friendly manner that looks and feels more inviting than Google.</p>
<p>A feature called Hover displays a brief summary of each Web page when your cursor is hovering over the right edge of a link, and this can save you from visiting a useless page. As another time-saving feature, to further save searchers from clicking to another page, Bing answers medical queries by featuring information from the Mayo Clinic at the top of the results page. Videos on Bing start playing when you move your cursor over a thumbnail still image from the video, without requiring you to press play or go to a new page; the videos stop when you mouse elsewhere. A query about a company usually returns its customer-service phone number at the top of the results page. Shopping, restaurant reviews and travel are also significantly enhanced by Bing.</p>

<p>Google isn&#8217;t going away. Both search engines stick to plain, white backgrounds and proudly proclaim the total number of results at the top of the page, a competition that Google almost always wins. Google also is steadily delivering more of its own useful data right in the results, but those efforts feel minimal compared with Bing.</p>

<p>It&#8217;s a given that many people will try Bing once, get frustrated by the unfamiliar environment and switch back to Google. Others will use whatever their Web browser&#8217;s search box is set to (Google, for many people) because they don&#8217;t know how to change their options or they&#8217;re too lazy to do so. Microsoft&#8217;s Live Search engine has been replaced by <a href="http://Bing.com">Bing.com</a>.</p>
<p>You can bring up Bing the old-fashioned way by going to <a href="http://Bing.com">Bing.com</a>. This Web page is a perfect example of the search engine&#8217;s engaging, attractive style. <a href="http://Bing.com">Bing.com</a> evokes the cover of a glossy magazine with a stunning photo that takes over the page. This photo, usually slightly off-beat and somewhat alluring, changes every day. If you move your cursor across the photo, blurbs filled with interesting text and Web links materialize on-screen to teach you something related to the photo. It&#8217;s a shame that many people will never see the Web page because they search using the box built into their browser.</p>
<p>From this home page, you can dive directly into searching videos, like TV shows, news and sports videos, or browsing music by watching music videos arranged by artist, genre and popularity. I browsed through episodes of &#8220;The Office&#8221; and watched the &#8220;People Are Crazy&#8221; music video by country singer, Billy Currington.</p>
<p>The Bing results page has a left-side panel called the Explore Pane, which includes suggestions of terms and categories to select. A search for Abraham Lincoln, for example, showed links to speeches, childhood and library &#8212; among others. The Explore Pane includes related searches of terms that people searching for the same thing as you also looked up.</p>
<p>The related searches were sometimes helpful, like &#8220;Paul McCartney Tour Dates&#8221; when I Binged the famed musician. But the related searches also could be confusing, like when I searched for my own name and found &#8220;Jan D&#8217;Esopo&#8221; listed as the top related search suggestion. (D&#8217;Esopo is a painter and sculptor who is active in Puerto Rico, according to Wikipedia.)</p>

<p>I tried comparing Bing with Google in side-by-side searches for tennis player Roger Federer. Bing showed me six colorful images of Federer atop its results page, along with an Explore Pane full of links to his biography, posters, quotes, blog and more. The third listed related-search term, &#8220;Roger Federer Shirtless,&#8221; made me laugh.</p>
<p>Google didn&#8217;t automatically embed images of the tennis great on its results page (for that, of course, you have to go to its Image search page), but it did display Federer&#8217;s winning score for that day&#8217;s French Open match &#8212; information that was extremely useful to me.</p>
<p>Bing presents photos in a more eye-pleasing way than Google. The Roger Federer image search on Bing filled the page with images only &#8212; none of the messy text descriptions that appear in the same Google search results. By selecting visuals in the top right of the Bing results page, I changed the size of the photos to small, medium, large or detailed. As I moved my cursor over an image, the image popped forward in a larger version with text details.</p>
<p>Microsoft wants people to use Bing for shopping, and the search engine brings product reviews right to the results page, making it look a bit like Amazon, complete with images, ratings and links to online stores. Bing Cashback, a money-rewards program that works with certain items, is less complicated than its confusing predecessor, but it isn&#8217;t as clear as it should be.</p>
<p>For people looking up airline flights, Microsoft integrates a technology called Bing Travel into the search. This tool predicts whether a fare will go up or down in the future based on data aggregation and analysis. A built-in tool works similarly with hotels, analyzing data to tell if you&#8217;re getting a good deal.</p>
<p>After I got over my initial resistance to Bing&#8217;s unfamiliarity, I really enjoyed using it and found that searching with it was less of a chore and more of an interactive experience. Microsoft gives users a true service by bringing rich content directly to the search-results page.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>If you&#8217;re tired of the basic BlackBerry design (small keyboard with a small screen) or the iPhone design (a virtual keyboard on a large touch screen) you might prefer a device with a roomy physical keyboard that stays out of your way, hiding under a large screen until you need it. Over six years ago, a small company called Danger introduced just such a device, called the Sidekick.</p>
<p>Since then, Danger has been acquired by Microsoft Corp. (MSFT), and there have been many iterations of the Sidekick. This Monday, yet another version of the Sidekick will be released: the Sidekick LX. Its swing-out screen design hasn&#8217;t changed much over the years, but competitors have since produced several other devices that also have screens that move to reveal QWERTY keyboards &#8212; including the Google (GOOG) Android G1 phone, whose chief designer also helped create the Sidekick.</p>

<p>This week, I tested the T-Mobile Sidekick LX to see how this old chestnut fared with some new polishing inside and out. It still bears the flashy, hip features that distinguished older Sidekicks, and newly integrated social-networking apps for Facebook, MySpace and Twitter enhance these traits. A Download Catalog works like Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) popular App Store by bringing games, apps, themes and sounds directly to the device.</p>
<p>But this Sidekick&#8217;s pricing doesn&#8217;t make much sense in our current recession: It will cost $250 after a mail-in rebate for new T-Mobile customers who sign up for a two-year contract; current T-Mobile customers who are eligible for an upgrade will pay $200 after the same discounts.</p>
<p>For $200, you could buy Apple&#8217;s iPhone or Research In Motion&#8217;s (RIMM) BlackBerry Storm, which both have touch screens and come with Microsoft Exchange support that synchronizes the device with corporate email accounts. (T-Mobile says the Sidekick LX should be able to get Exchange support from the device&#8217;s Download Catalog &#8220;in the coming months,&#8221; but wouldn&#8217;t be more specific.) The Sidekick also lacks Wi-Fi capability, which is also true for the BlackBerry Storm but not so for the iPhone, which works with 3G or Wi-Fi networks.</p>
<p>The absence of a touch screen is glaring on such an expensive device, especially one with a screen this large. It&#8217;s easy to imagine using a finger to flick and spin the Sidekick&#8217;s on-screen menu wheel, tapping on one to open it. Instead, you&#8217;re stuck using a trackball to repeatedly scroll through a crowded, 15-menu wheel.</p>

<p>The LX is the thinnest Sidekick yet, but it still looked rather large lying next to my BlackBerry Curve 8300 and an iPhone; it measures 1.3 and 2.16 cubic inches larger than each, respectively. Compared with past Sidekicks, this one has a design that feels flatter thanks to a thin flip-out screen that smoothly blends into the device in its closed position. You have to lift up the nestled-in screen before it turns to flip out, and I found it a little harder to open with just a push of my left thumb.</p>
<p>The Sidekick LX, however, has some hearty extras including a generous 3.2-inch display, a 3G connection that makes it easy to use for quickly browsing the Web, built-in GPS and a 3.2-megapixel camera (like the BlackBerry Storm and new BlackBerry Curve 8900 cameras). It comes with a 1-gigabyte microSD card, but this memory card can be accessed only by pulling off the device&#8217;s back panel instead of via a card slot on the side.</p>
<p>I brought the Sidekick LX with me for a weekend in Boston and its good-quality camera came in handy as I wandered Copley Square and snapped photos of still-blooming tulips in bright colors. I signed into my Facebook and Twitter accounts, and updates from these networks flashed across the top of the screen in banner-like news flashes.</p>
<p>The Sidekick LX can play YouTube videos, and can record its own videos for uploading and sharing to Web sites. Its colorful screen has over twice the resolution of its predecessor and is 0.6-inch larger.</p>
<p>But a few awkward software designs left me scratching my head. After I uploaded a photo from the Sidekick LX to Facebook, I was left in the Facebook app, rather than my device&#8217;s photo album, where I started and wanted to be. MySpace updates are pushed to the Sidekick LX as they happen, but Facebook automatically updates only once an hour. Twitter can be set to check tweets as often as every five minutes, but, by default, it&#8217;s set to check only every 30 minutes &#8212; a glacial pace for Twitter fans.</p>
<p>I used the Download Catalog to buy a few apps, games and ringtones for my Sidekick, including a $6.99 game of &#8220;Who Wants to Be a Millionaire 2009&#8243;; a $2.99 flashlight app; and a $2.49 ringtone that played 15 seconds of Katy Perry&#8217;s song &#8220;Thinking of You.&#8221; T-Mobile says there are thousands of items in this catalog.</p>
<p>Calls placed and received on the Sidekick were remarkably clear-sounding to me and the friends I spoke with. Dialing numbers could be a little frustrating because, as was the case with former Sidekicks, you&#8217;ll need to open the flip-out screen to dial the number and then close it so you can hold the phone up to your ear. But most people will call friends in their address books and won&#8217;t need to use the number keypad.</p>
<p>The Sidekick&#8217;s 15 menus are simply too many to scroll through. I would prefer it if several categories were combined into one, such as Phone, myFaves (T-Mobile&#8217;s list of five friends you call), Phone Messaging and Address Book. Currently, these are listed as four separate menus. Simultaneously pressing the Sidekick&#8217;s Jump and Cancel buttons brings up a Quick Access view of recently opened menus and unread messages, and this eases navigation.</p>
<p>For its price, the Sidekick LX should be shipped with Microsoft Exchange already working, and all of its social-networking apps should have better updating capabilities. But most of all, the Sidekick&#8217;s big screen is just begging for multitouch in place of a trackball. If these features were part of the Sidekick LX 2009, it might be worth its price.</p>
