"If DoJ lets them get away with such,..."

Ah, yes, Big Brother knows best. Some bureaucrat, behind a desk in DC or Europe, who's sole goal is a bigger pay check –off taxpayers, should be the arbiter of "proper" competition. If businesses collude there are fraud statues to intervene, no other interference in business activity should be tolerated. Any other way, consumers lose.

My guess is that where MS will fall down is on the cost of success in this area. Their maps data was better than Google's for a while, they had aerial photos, but then Google went to the street level. MS had closer satellite data in some spots too, but it often turned out to be older, or only in black and white. MS had a pretty impressive book scanning operation going on there for a while too (also a better interface than Google's) but just as suddenly they got out of it.

Online services is such a different paradigm than stamping out laser engraved product activation paper (which is what MS's core business boils down to) that it's hard to imagine them carrying both business models forward. At least not without a serious DoJ look-through. Until there is a true competitor to Windows (and Apple doesn't quite qualify yet) I don't see how MS can afford to be seen as successful in services. If DoJ lets them get away with such, they are surely being paid to look the other way. In fact, this is almost certainly the case. Doesn't seem to be working in Europe though.

[...] Katherine Boehret at WSJ has a write-up on the niceties of Bing, so I won't repeat them here. It does some things different than Google, breaking some ingrained habits, and while there isn't much that's significantly worse, there is quite a bit that is considerably better. The results that come back are somewhat different, sometimes more on target, sometimes not, I'd say the jury's out on that, especially since this is a just-launched service (assuming it's not just a re-skin of Live, I don't know what's under the hood), and assuming it will improve as users contribute with clicks. (Like Google, it lists this blog as the top search when I self-search, so that's a plus.) [...]
