Great overview, Katherine. TweetDeck resolves some of the problems you listed. It allows you to sort tweets and notifies you of @ replies. However, I've found it to be a bit "buggy" at times, so I don't always use it.

Nice summary, Katherine. It will come in handy for an intro-to-Twitter workshop I'm conducting in our newsroom.

As you noted, people search is not fully functional on Twitter, but I've been able to find several Twitter users via Google searches for their name and the word Twitter.

One other thing they need to add to the interface:

Tweets are posted from newest to oldest. When catching up on tweets using the Twitter site you would thus likely read them from bottom to top to keep things chronological, especially when you follow multiple-tweeters.

Twitter needs to either move or copy the Older>> and <<Newer buttons to the top of the page!

Quite annoying to have to scroll back to the bottom of the page to continue to the next page.

Hi,
Actually you can follow any @replies even if you don't follow the replier back.

Go to Settings -> Notices
The second item down is a drop down menu, and allows you to pick which level of notices you want. Choose
All @ replies.

Then you'll see them all on the web interface.

The other option is to use a Twitter client, most of which default to showing you all @replies even if you don't follow them.
